I Love This Book!
My wife and I vacationed in St. Louis with our 2-year-old son and used this book to plan our trip. It was invaluable, pointing out activities we never would have known about otherwise. This book helped make our trip one of the best vacations we've ever had.

essential guide to St. Louis attractions for anyone w/kids
I keep 2 copies of this book handy: one in the car and one by the phone. I have recently purchased an updated copy and found the information current and accurate. It gives information on places as diverse as parks, restaurants, bookstores, museums, and the zoo. There are many fun ideas included that I would have never thought of myself. For example, you can ride the Amtrak train from Kirkwood to Downtown very cheaply and the kids have a ball. My 4-year-old son used the facilities twice in the 1/2 hour it took just because it was such a unique experience! Anyone living in St Louis or just visiting shouldn't be without this book!

Building a life of confident learning...
"Raising a child is the most important job you'll ever have." ~Rob Reiner

The First Years is a book that was created in conjunction with I Am Your Child, a national organization that focuses on raising public awareness about the importance of learning during the first three years of a child's life.

The contents include:

Getting to know me: birth to nine months
I can do it myself: 9-18 months
On my way: 18-36 months

During the first three years of a child's life there is so much more going on than just the physical/visual development. What is going on in a child's mind? Are they developing a healthy self-esteem and a positive attitude towards learning?

Are you sure your baby feels loved and secure? They discuss the myth about not picking up your infant when he/she cries too much. I have always wondered about this aspect, because I think it is natural for a mother to want to comfort an infant who is crying and it seems unnatural to leave a child crying for ages in a crib when you are who they depend on. This book also tells you that it is normal for babies to cry for certain periods of time during various stages.

Some of the highlights include: The advantages of Breast feeding, Establishing Routines, How Babies Communicate and a discussion about how you can encourage your baby to communicate with you through "self-talk."

I also enjoyed the section on: Why Babies Cry and what to do about it, Understanding your child's unique temperament, Teaching self-discipline, Language and Learning, Play Time, Childproofing the house, The stage from crawling to walking and how to deal with crib-climbers.

Questions they answer include:

What causes colic and what is the normal duration of crying?
When do babies begin talking?
Why do children bite?
How can I prevent tantrums?
How do you provide your child with the best nutrition?
How often should you visit the doctor?
Will you ever get enough sleep again?
What do I do when my baby won't stop crying?
Is baby talk ok?

This guide will encourage you to make the most of those first few years that can be so crucial to your child's development. Knowing about each stage of our baby's development makes it a bit easier to meet your baby's needs.

Great book & resource!
I just looked at this book while attending a national conference on child development. This would make a great gift for new or expectant parents. It is well wriiten and very easy to follow.

Another Great Famous Five Book
When a tree falls on George's house, the Famous Five are sent to a fellow scientist's house. "Sooty" shows them how to have fun, by climbing on the city walls and going through secret tunnels. George gets in trouble, and is locked in her room untill her dad arrives. Meanwhile Timmy disappers, and Block ,deaf, is seen talking with a well known smuggler. When George's dad and Sooty disapper, the Five must find them before it's too late, but do they suspect the wrong person?

Smashing
We thought this book was so cool that we wrote a Haiku on it;

Five go to smugglers top pop, They have adventures, Oh no, it's time to go home.

Easter Gale Castle on top of the hill Sinister tower Dogs not allowed Uncle Quentin is kidnapped Timmy unearths fugitives

I think the coolest chapter is the one where Block gets a surprise- it was so full of suspense. The second coolest chapter is the one called Sooty Lenoir. My most scariest moment was when Timmy fell into the marsh and the lorry driver had to use his planks to help pull him out. I felt so scared because I thought Timmy would die, and the Famous Five would have to become the Famous Four, and they might not be able to solve adventures the same. The secret passages were real spooky. I wish we had secret passages in our house.

Read all of the series...

I hope you too will agree that this is the coolest one.

New York with kids made easy!
Who would have guessed it could be this easy! We found lots of great places to go and had a week of fun with the kids. This book is right on target, without the trendy babble. Can't wait to visit New York again.

A vacation must for ideas with kids.
Fantastic guide to cruise the backroads and major roads with a car full of kids. Both the well known attractions and the obscure are covered. Check the web sites to preview places to go before your vacation. Informative but not cluttered with useless information.

Go Girl: An Inspiring Journey from Bronze to Gold

A Coaches Dream!
Without a doubt, Go Girl is the best motivational book for young women athletes that I've ever read. It takes the reader on a practical, methodical and inspirational journey of self discovery that culminates, in the case of author, Natalie Cook, with an olympic gold medal. From Chapter 1, 'It all starts with a dream' to the end, 'Golden Dawn', Cook writes about her 4-year 'journey to gold' in a way that's not just interesting, but causes the reader to almost subconsciously become the character in the story. You can't help but apply Cook's experiences and observations of self discovery to your own life. As a high school girls volleyball coach I am always looking for ways to inspire and motivate my players and I knew they had to read this book. We made it mandatory summer reading and told them that there would be a test when school started in the fall. In the weeks follwing the test, one player had to stand before the team each day before practice and give a chapter review that included how the content of the chapter might be applied to our team as a whole or to the player as an individual. Everything about Go Girl, from the subject material to the lay-out and design of the book, is done in a way that teenagers can relate to. I highly recommend it.

Inspirational
This is the first book I have found that captures the essence of mental toughness in sport. It presents the complex nature of how to control your thoughts, so having complete control over what you do. Having a female role model for my junior girls was a real bonus. It has helped me as a coach and those players that have read it are reaping the rewards.

Great Music! Great Message!
Years ago, when I was little my bought this tape for us to listen to. It has been listen to so much that the tape is worn and in bad shape. You have to have full volume to even hear it sometimes. I remember sitting in the car listening to it rather that going inside some place with my dad. The song playing was about Isabel the pig. "Isabel is a pig with a ring in her snout. You can dress Izzy up, but you can't take her out. She will jump in the middle of a big muddle, because Isabel is pig." All the trappings in the world, don't look pretty when you act like a fool or put on a pouty face.
My favorite song is "The School of the Fool." The guy in the song was "A first class, A+, student in the school of the fool." He was mean, lazy, etc.
"Go to the Ant" is really a well known saying from the Bible. It is also something we should be paying attention to. The ant doesn't have a boss looking over her shoulder. She does the work anyway. She works all day. Not like us. Some do may be, but most work a five, six, seven, eight, nine hour shift. Not from son up 'till sun down. "Are you responcible? Do you ever do a job without being told to? Or are you the lazy kind? And you mother and your father always have to scold you?" "Go to the ant, observe her. See how she works all day. And she doesn't even have a captain to tell her what to do, but she works hard anyway. Go to the ant, and listen. Tell me does she complain. She is God's illustration of organisation. God made her, now you immitate her. Go to the ant." "Well, there was a poor irrisponcible sluggard who slept when there was work to be done. Too late he realized his foolish behavior and poverty struck him like a man with a gun. Go to the ant."
I still find my self singing the song about the seven things God hates. "There are six things, even seven, that the Lord, that he cannot stand: Proud looking eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that thinks of wicked things to do, feet that run to evil do, anyone who loves to lie about others, and one who causes trouble with his brothers." "God hates things that we should hate too."
"From the lips of the little ones, he has ordained his praise." "You made man a little lower than the angels, put things under his feet."
"Talk to me. Show me that you care. Talk to me. Listen to what I say. Talk to me. There's so much we can share. I know you love me when you talk to me." "He always takes the time to talk to me."
I remember times when I didn't care much for Christian music (didn't know much about it either), the music was too dull, but (little children music it may be), music like this appeal to me ten times what the rest did.
The beats great, the words are not only great, but (sorry to about half the bands in the world) they are understandable. The message is clear and it is clearly benificial rather that to your potential downfall as some music now a days is.
I highly recommend this tape, whether you are getting it for a little kid like my mom was, or you're getting it for yourself. You won't regret it.
PS - I'm listening to it as I write this.

Go to the Ant
This cassette has musically rich tunes with sound, biblical lyrics. Judy Rogers uses mostly guitar with her songs. She has a very pleasant-sounding voice. She comes from a Reformed background - each song is well-written and pure in its doctrine. This tape has songs encouraging children to enjoy their work, to keep their conversation edifying and to listen to the words of their parents. My children have grown up listening to her many tapes - this one is for the younger ones, say ages 3 to 10. I have bought over a dozen copies as birthday gifts for friends of mine. Enjoy!

Editorial Review
God Wants to Go Home provides a rare opportunity to read about the subjects that fascinate us the most all in one place. This book convincingly reveals the truth about the origin of man as never told before and details the master plan to return home.

God Wants to Go Home describes the creation of man with two different conscious states, his initial education, and the tests that followed. It clarifies the subjects of the seen and unseen universes, the Big Bang, and the Black Holes. It explains the mechanism and meaning of dreams, reincarnation, and life after death. It advocates the freedom of man, and the ban of capital punishment. It gives the reason for the failure of all religions, and the necessity of wars and their resulting benefits. It simplifies the perplexing paradoxes of nature such as the chicken and the egg.

This book educates us on the true meaning of the numbers and geometric figures - the pyramid, the Star of David, the Swastika - and our attraction to them.

The author's ideas are unique and his explanations are compelling.

A Guerrilla Manual for the Adult College Student: How to Go to College Almost Full Time in Your Spare Time...and Still Have Time to Hold Down a Job, Raise a Family, Pay the Bills, and Have Some Fun

Essential Reading For Adult Students
This book is set apart from others of its type by its real-world pragmatism. No fluff, no padding... just simple, clearly defined strategies the reader can begin applying immediately to balance the demands of college, career and family. Written with great clarity and a nice dash of humor, this is one of the best investments an adult returning to school could make.

Excellent handbook for the adult learner
There are several books available that can help prospective adult students determine how best to go for that coveted piece of paper, and any person seriously considering going back to college should find and read them. But most of those books, however good, were written by academics and researchers, not actual adult students. And this is where Doolin's recently published Guerrilla Manual for Adult College Students really shines.

I contacted Author Doolin and found out a few things--for example, he comes at this subject from a somewhat different perspective than the researchers and academics: he actually was an adult student, and spent 15 years of night school pursuing his Bachelor's degree and several more getting his Master's. On top of that, he is now an adjunct Assistant Professor in the English Department of one of the country's premier community colleges (Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY), mostly teaching evening writing courses full of returning adult students. If those aren't enough credentials, Doolin also devotes hundreds of hours per year advising students at MCC, and most of those are returning adults as well. Doolin's 'been there, done that' in the adult student world, and the things he says in this book show that in-the-trenches experience.

The title of this book is no coincidence. This is a hands-on guide full of real-world experiences. In addition to Doolin's own years of struggle to get his degree, he interviewed dozens of adult students in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s to get their take on the strategies that work and the ones that don't. The book includes nearly 200 little stories in the form of quotes from adult students, detailing their thoughts and approaches on a wide variety of subjects. These short quotes are sprinkled throughout the book's 346 pages and 31 chapters.

This book is as comprehensive a treatment of going back to school as an adult as you are likely to find anywhere, and covers every major topic, including fear of returning to school, studying, test taking, babysitting woes, time management, finding the money to go to school, personal learning styles, methods of earning credit outside the classroom and dozens of other critical subjects. In addition to answering common questions and addressing typical concerns, Doolin has added a number of eye-opening statistics as well. Do you know how much more you are likely to make over a lifetime of work with a Bachelor's degree vs a high school education? It's about $1,000,000 - and a Master's is worth nearly twice that. Do you know how many adults are currently going to college? About 7.5 million. The book also includes hundreds of internet links to additional information on everything from learning styles to financial aid. If you need more information on a topic, Doolin has provided a quick way for you to get it.

Doolin has been an advertising copywriter for many years, has had some fiction published, and has ghost-written hundreds of magazine articles for his ad agency clients. Those years of writing for public consumption definitely show. His writing style is quick, conversational and very easy to read.

Guerrilla Manual for Adult College Students is about as good a book on this subject as you could want. It's packed with information that is usable in the real world, is thorough, well organized and easy to read. Any adult thinking of going back to school should definitely read it.

Review for "How to Go on Living After the Death of a Baby"
Despite having a wonderfully supportive family, I needed even more comfort after the death of my infant twin daughters. I couldn't understand the emotions I was feeling and I felt so alone even when surrounded by friends and family. This book must be read by every mother who has feelings of desperation and hopelessness. I hope to never have to pass it on to a friend, but if the need arises, I would recommend it positively.

a wonderfully comforting and understanding analysis of loss
a friend lent me this book after i lost a baby @15 weeks in 1994. i was struck by how two men could write a book with such great insight into a loss felt most intensely by women. the authors interviewed women who had experienced loss - either through miscarriage, infant death or stillbirth - and recorded their feelings in a most non-judgmental and sympathetic way.

i found the section on doctors particularly illuminating, since the reaction of my own doctor had been less than warm. peppers and knapp theorize that doctors who choose obstetrics as a specialty, especially young ones, are ill-equipped to deal with loss.

i have recommended this book to many women and will continue to do so. i applaud the authors for a wonderful source of comfort during a most devastating time

Utterly charming
An exceptionally delightful, inventive, and genuinely engaging picture book. Marisabina, please keep writing and drawing; we need you!

I don't want to go back to school
My son and I discovered M. Russo's books in the library. He has fallen in love with her stories and keeps asking for more. "I don't want to go back to school" is based on a little boy's fear and insecurity about the first day of school. The topic is simply and clearly managed. Russo's writing style is remarkable because it stimulates conversation about the story and provides me the opportunity to teach my son.
