The Adventures of Sunny & The Chocolate Dog: Sunny & The Chocolate Dog Go to the Beach
Published in Paperback by Sunny & The Chocolate Dog, LLC (15 February, 2003)
Authors: Susie Neimark and Kent Hammerstrom
Amazon base price: $9.95
Sunny, a protective golden lab, is eager to bring her little sister Cloudy to the beach for Cloudy's first ever swim. Of course, getting into the big rough waves can be a little intimidating even when it looks like a lot of fun. So Sunny, keeping safety in mind, must carefully coax her young charge into the water and teach her what a delight swimming actually is. Kids are likely to have a strong affinity for Sunny and Cloudy as they think of times when they were scared to try something new or times when they were called upon to help someone younger than themselves. Kent Hammerstrom's illustrations have a low-tech appeal, more so in his delightful depictions of the dogs than in his overly caricatured humans. The book is published by "Sunny & The Chocolate Dog, LLC" and it would have been interesting to see what a good editor from a more established imprint could have done with Susie Neimark's story (besides correcting a typo on page 46). Neimark's style could reasonably be described as long-winded as she takes her time detailing and sometimes restating everything that happens on this seminal seashore excursion. But at the same time, it's nice to see text that isn't boiled to a minimum word count and forcibly hammered into the sing-songy rhyme scheme that's all too common in many children's books. (Ages 3 to 7) --John Moe

a gem of a story!
My kids love this book! We have a yellow Lab, and it is nice to see a story about animals that actually depicts some of the real characteristics and emotions they display. My youngest was quick to point out how the little chocolate dog was afraid to go into the water, just as our pup was. It is a wonderful, endearing and entertaining story.

Great mix: kids & dogs
After reading Sunny & The Chocolate Dog Go to the Beach, my 10 year old son immediately wanted to go visit the www.sunnyand thechocolatedag.com web site to learn more about the dogs. Having a dog of his own, the book was an instant success.

Sunny & The Chocolate Dog Go to the Beach
Another enjoyable read for me. The author has done a very good job in communicating the subject to the readers. I would highly recommend this for the young reader as well as the parent who reads to their children.

Show Me the Way to Go Home

HOPE AND UNDERSTANDING
LARRY ROSE has Alzheimer's disease. It is little comfort to him that he is among the millions of others strickened with this debilitating disease. What should be of comfort to the reader is that this warm, witty, and intelligent man is willing to bare his soul and share his experiences so that we can understand more about this disease. In his touching book, SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME, Rose gives us a brief glimpse into a window of life that few understand. Rose presents each stage with the freshness of someone who knows not what the future holds. Breathtaking in its innocence, Rose's words hold special meaning to anyone who knows someone suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The book opens with a penetrating look at the "Man that was"---a brilliant electrical engineer with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for life. Rose's son, Jeff, has written a beautiful introduction that describes his joyful memories of growing up with his dad---and the deep love that exists between them. Rose's son also express his frusteration with a disease and his sadness at its striking such a wonderful and young (54) man as his father. This book is written with the goal of giving the reader a deeper understanding of the disease's affects from the inside. A perspective of someone who knows of what he speaks. SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME, is an outstanding, provocative read. Rose has not only found a way to tell us about the disease, he's also found a way to make us comprehend and empathize with sufferers around the world without once asking for pity.

AN INSPIRATION
I have heard it said that "He has achieved succes who has lived well, laughed often and loved much". Larry Rose, the author of "Show me the way to go home" has achieved success. Rose will leave this world a better place than he found it by giving us this book. It is a book that cannot be put down until you have read the last page then leaves us wanting to learn more. Rose has given us the best he has to give and has never lacked the appreciation of others that have helped him along his journey through Alzheimer's disease. His life should be an inspiration to all of us. Through his book, Rose has gained the respect of intelligent people and the love of all who have been fortunate to read it. Rose is fighting this disease with the grace of a true hero. His story in an inspiration: his memory will be a benediction. I am looking forward to reading his next book. Kathy Smith RN

Don't go through early diagnosis alone...
My mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease at fifty years. I found Larry Rose's account of what was happening to be a wonderful way to relate to her in a way that she was unable to describe to me. This book will be a "hard to put down" account of daily life for those facing similar experiences along the way through this dibilitating illness that robs so much. Larry finds a positive light to shine on purpose in life and to keep on living. He is truly a courageous story that should not be missed. A big five star read with a human approach.

Excellent book on marketing strategy - a must read!!!
I just purchased a copy of this book, and read it cover to cover in one sitting (although it is about 300 pages). This appears to be the "follow up" book to author Lawrence Friedman's last book The Channel Advantage (a copy of which is dog-eared and worn to the binding in my personal library). This book has some similarities to The Channel Advantages, but some big differences too. Like The Channel Advantage, it is witty and interesting with a sense of humor lacking in most business books, I really enjoy this author's books. Also, it shows a street wise, very practical understanding of the sales and marketing issues faced by both large and small companies. It has dozens of case studies and interesting (and clever) examples of companies in many different markets. Where Go To Market Strategy differs from the author's last book is the content. Go To Market Strategy is a much more strategic and all-inclusive book -something like, every sales and marketing issue you face in taking your products to customers. At first you think, the author bites off so much content, can he (and you) chew it, but it is all digestible and a few hundred pages later, you "get it". The book's theme or argument is twofold. First, to "go to market" with a product or service successfully, you must execute five very interrelated activities: selection of the right market(s), identification of customers' core needs, the right channels mix, the best product design, and development of a strong (compelling) sales message. Second, everything you do in going to market must be organized around the needs and desires of customers. While not exactly a new idea, the author does a very nice job of providing helpful tools and practical ideas to get aligned with customers and meet them on their own terms. In fact, this book is one of the few to say something useful and new, and non-cliche'd, about focusing on the customer and the role that customers must play in your go to market efforts.

For ...Minimally, it will give you a plethora of tools, concepts and ways to think about increasing sales at a lower cost. But you may get a lot more than that out of the book - a total systematic approach to use when launching new products and sales campaigns.

The "Bible" Of Channel Strategy???????
My boss (the vice president of marketing, for a Fortune 200 media company) handed me this book and said: Read this; it is the bible of channel strategy. I noticed one of the other reviewers here also called it the Bible. Well, there is only one Bible, so let's not overdo it, people! Please! The book is impressive so far, though. I have read five chapters of nine as of this review. Go To Market Strategy's best characteristic is that it is very well written and articulate, and also, that it has a huge amount of information and new ideas for product marketing and management. There are many strategies and practical tools that my team can use immediately to improve the launch of new media services into key market segments. I do have a criticism, and that is that I do not think the author sufficiently considers the role of pricing strategy as part of a go to market strategy. For a marketing book said to be of biblical proportions, I would have expected to see more on pricing; while not completely absent, I would have to say that pricing is not the author's favorite topic. Also, some more treatment of international partnering and the global aspects of product launches would have been helpful, since most new product initiatives involve a heavy dose of int'l partnering issues. Aside from those concerns, Go To Market Strategy does live up to its reputation for being the best book in its field and the one that everybody seems to be reading. Friedman is influential as a marketing and channels theorist and practitioner, and it is clear why when reading this book. If you buy it, read the footnotes, because half of them are like little "time-outs" with amusing observations. Recommended.

can't go wrong
Attended the author's strategy workshop in NYC in December, got a freebie copy of the book...can't argue with that! Best biz book of last 3-4 years, hands down...the "Bible" of go to market. 360 degree view of market / channel / sales / partnering strategy. Shows how all pieces of puzzle fit together. Really, really, really, really like the chapters on partnering, channel integration. A+++

Loaned the book out & never got it back
I inherited this book from my Polish great-aunt (and I happened to own a Witez grandson) and loved it and always reread it every couple of years. Learning what this horse went through the war gave me a greater appreciation for what my own family went through. While living in Thunder Bay I loaned it out to an Arabian admirer that regularly watched our gymkhanas - and I never saw him again - Did he & his daughter move back to S ON? If this is you or your family - pls contact me at d_wyant@hotmail.com - I'd like it back

shock & awe
THREE YEARS AGO I OBTAINED A BEAUTIFUL MARE,UNKNOWINGLY WITH WEITEZ II BLOODLINE TOP AND BOTTOM. MY MOTHER-IN LAW BOUGHT THIS BOOK IN 1976.A CLOSE FRIEND OWNED WITEZAN. WITEZ II WAS SHOWN BY ANOTHER CLOSE FRIEND BY THE NAME OF ROCKY WHITE. FOR YEARS I HAVE LOVED THIS HORSE AND HIS GITT. THIS STORY TOUCHED MY HEART IN THE MOST AMAZING WAY AND TO NOW OWN A DIRECT DESCENDENT GREAT GREAT GRANDAUGHTER THAT LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE WITEZ II DOWN TO THE EAGLE EYES IS UNBELEIVABLE. WE WILL BREED HER AS SOON AS WE FIND A WORTHY STUD.

Miles to Go
The author tells an interesting story of World War II throught the eyes of a proud family who valued both their own and their horses' heritage. I have 2 Witez II descendants. I was surprised to find out about their history through this story. Very good reading for young and old.

I Want to Go Home

Author: Gordon Korman
Amazon base price: $2.75

A laugh for all ages!
I've been reading, re-reading, and giving away Gordon Korman's hilarious books for fifteen years. I read them aloud to my 65-year-old mother and she laughs out loud. My young nieces and nephew, living in a small American base in South America, report that when the news gets around that a new Gordon Korman book has arrived from the States, it is immediately "borrowed" and makes the rounds, returning sometimes months later. I've had to buy second and third copies of some titles for myself because the ones I lent out mysteriously "disappeared." They're all entertaining, but "I Want to Go Home" is the hands-down, all-time favorite. Everyone can identify with Rudy, the kid who through no fault of his own is "guided" to summer camp. We've all been forced to play games which did not interest us and show group spirit for a group we didn't want to be part of. We've resented being told what to do and "wanted to go home"...only to realize, often, that if we did go home there would be nothing to do there. We've known shrewd people like Pierre who treat kids with respect and get respect in return, boneheads like Chip who try to throw their weight around and get nothing but resistance, and people who are far out of the loop entirely, like vague, pompous, pathetic Mr. Warden. In the end, everyone gets what he deserves, and the situations Rudy and his friends create for themselves are very, very funny. I hope this book is reprinted soon; in the meantime, if you're lucky enough to find a copy, read it and laugh, read it again and laugh again, and hang on to it!

Among Korman's Best
This book starts out strong and doesn't let up until the end. I can't imagine how anyone could read this book and not laugh all the way through it!

Camp Algonkian Island is every campers dream. Or so the counselors and the camp director, Mr. Warden, believe. None of them are prepared for Rudy Miller. Rudy doesn't want to be at camp; he's determined to go home and he'll do anything he has to do in order to escape 'Alcatraz' (his preferred nickname for the island) and the clones (what he calls the counselors). His counselor in Cabin 13, Chip, isn't quite sure what to do with the Rudy when he refuses to participate in all camp activites by saying he 'doesn't do them'. Chip's problems have only begun when Mike Webster joins Rudy as another camper who would prefer to be elsewhere and finds himself swept up into Rudy's somewhat dramatic, and hilarious, attempts at escape.

Between repeated escape attempts, seemingly endless punishment duty, and an ongoing feud with cabinmate Harold Green, the counselors manage to force Rudy into participation and find that not only can he DO all the things he refused to participate in, Rudy has the abilities of a natural born overachiever! He wins at every sport, game and contest that he competes in -- but he still wants to go home.

Hilarity ensues as Rudy and Mike build dams, take boats, and escape from events off the island in their attempts to get away from camp while various counselors try to bribe Rudy into playing on camp teams (thus assuring they'd win); meanwhile, Rudy is slowly driving Chip toward a nervous breakdown.

Rudy's blase attitude and dead pan humor are dead on and this book is a masterpiece. No matter your age this book will be truly enjoyable.

A CLASSIC!
My cousin first introduced me to this book about 10 years ago, and I must say, I've been coming to her for good-reading suggestions ever since. When my brother was about nine, nobody could get him to come within ten feet of a book if it wasn't necessary for school. I finally came up with the idea of reading "I Want to Go Home!" to him. (I didn't dream of making him read it on his own.) Well, every night for the next couple of weeks, the sound of ringing laughter could be heard coming from his bedroom at night. After we were about halfway through, I was in for a surprise -- he had begun reading the book on his own! He's been almost an avid reader ever since, and he still loves to re-read this family classic. (P.S. This technique -- and this book -- worked for my youngest brother, as well.) And all three of us liked camp.

Finishing Strong : Finding The Power To Go The Distance
Published in Hardcover by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (16 November, 1995)
Author: Steve Farrar
Amazon base price: $19.99
Used price: $4.95
Average review score:

Good Read for Those Who Want to Finish Strong in Their Lives
Farrar's title is an excellent encouragement for those who desire a strong finish to their lives.

Among the points Farrar covers include:

1. The qualification for ministry is proven character.
2. Be careful of relationships with other women.
3. God's success radically differs from the world's definition of success.
4. Do not let a busy lifestyle come between you and your relationship with God.
5. Uninterrupted success for a prolonged period of time can result in a dangerous form of pride.
6. Characteristics of people who think they are leaders but are not.
7. God will use our times of unemployment, obscurity, waiting, and loneliness to mold us into the people He wants us to be.
8. God can use the failures and disappointments of our lives to mold us into His likeness.

All in all, a good and recommended read!

NOT JUST FOR MEN
I read this book as part of a class assignment and found the book applicable in MANY ways for women, with minor adjustment. Additionally, it provided a great deal of insight to the male perspective. I would encourage women to read this book, especially single women looking for "Mr. Right"...be sure he has a "Master's in Character Acquisition" and is "teachable". If you want to know more..read this book!

A must for the christian man who wants to get the prize!
My best friend recommended me this book, never thought it was going to be such a help to stablish guidelines for my life. Mr. Farrar does know what he's talking about. It even helped me to prepare some preaching for the congregation where I have my membership. One of the best books I've ever read.

The People's Guide to Mexico: Wherever You Go-- There You Are (10th Ed)
Published in Paperback by John Muir Publications (March, 1999)
Authors: Steve Rogers, Loretta Havens, Steve Rogers, and Lorena Havens
Amazon base price: $22.95
Used price: $4.00
Collectible price: $15.88
The People's Guide to Mexico is a different kind of guidebook--one that offers no lists of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, or beaches. As Carl Franz says in his introduction, "It is not about which hotels to stay in or the most interesting villages to visit. The purpose of this book is to teach you how to find out those things for yourself." Instead of telling visitors where to go in Mexico, this book lets travelers know how to go, whether they want to learn Spanish, retire south of the border, or simply travel as long as possible for the least amount of money. The People's Guide offers up witty anecdotes and sane, reasoned advice about everything from driving in Mexico to dealing with Mexican machismo to making the most of village fiestas. Best of all, the book provides a respectful and well-informed take on Mexican culture. "Wherever you go ... there you are," reads the The People's Guide subtitle, and it's an apt summation of the book's laid-back, roll-with-the-punches attitude. Tuck a copy into your backpack alongside a more conventional guide; it's like having a funny, trusted, and well-traveled friend along to show you the ropes.
Average review score:

OK, but then again...
It's a very enjoyable read, no doubt about that. What you WON'T find is a bunch of addresses of hotels and restaurants, no maps, and now bus schedules. What you WILL find is a very long series of amusing tips and hints about travel in Mexico. However, the book is a little dated, and it's been many a year since Carl Franz travelled through Mexico in the style here related--his current guided trips through Sonora will cost you in the thousands, which is certainly not what this book was all about!

A Treasure Chest of Infotainment, A Barrel of Monkeys
"The People's Guide to Mexico" is not your typical travel guide, full of recommended sights to see, hotels, itineraries, restaraunts, etc.

This is a treasure chest overflowing with infotainment: outrageous travel stories, Mexican slang, advice about everyday problems, e.g., from dealing with corrupt officials to building a thatched roof beach hut to bargaining in the market.

This book includes an incredible amount of general and detailed information about Mexico, but encourages readers to explore the country on their own. It gives the reader an inkling of what to expect and what not to expect of Mexico and Mexicans.

Although aimed primarily at low-to-mid-budget travelers, it's a must-read for anyone trying to understand Mexico and its culture. Dispelling myths about Mexico, it presents the everyday, bizarre reality of the place.

There's no need to start at the beginning and read each chapter sequentially to the last. Just open the book anywhere and become engrossed in some insanely funny adventure or a recipe for grilled Red Snapper.

I read an early edition cover-to-cover about a week before my first dive deep into Mexico's interior in the mid-1970s. I've never had more fun reading a guidebook, and just about every word still rings true whenever I return. Reading this book is an adventure in itself.

Mexican Magic
Carl Franz's fantastic book is not your typical guide book, nor is it intended to be. If what you're looking for is facts and information, maps and a list of cheap hotels and restaurants this isn't the book for you. If you want to cross the border in your mind and see what Mexico and its people are really like, then go no further. This is a book you can enjoy whether or not you're planning to go anywhere near Mexico. And after you've read it you'll not only feel that you've been there, you'll be packing to go.

A tremendous book with brilliant imagery and emotion
I had never read any Faulkner until I picked this off my bookshelf while browsing. Out of my wife's american literature classes has come what I feel to be one the best written books I have read in quite some time. The people are tortured, alive and very well described. The races are diagnosed in merciless precision and scrutiny, the unfortunate frustrations that plague them both. (there don't seem to be many other types of people in the stories except a few Indians) But this is art, literature the way it is supposed to be written. The language of Faulkner literally soars off the page with insight, feeling and relevance to the story. These Southern lives are mixed together, bringing forth a mulatto-rainbow mix of wonder and mystery and deep appreciation, a well developed reverence for life, its pain and people, suffering through a walk on the blessed earth. Truly great writing as compassionate as it is accurately reflecting the Southern world, post slave to this century through the eyes of a family smorgasbord of bloodlines and personalites. If you want to enjoy reading and have wondered at times why you are wasting your time on cultured pulp, this book will set you back on the right path.

Hard, challenging ... will bust your preconceptions
I read Go Down Moses in 1996 before taking a trip to Mississippi. I had never read Faulkner before and had only one criterion for picking a book of his: it had to take place in the mythical Yoknapatawpha County. I picked this one off the library shelf.

For any non-southern American whose sole exposure to what happened there was from history books, this should forever shatter the pat preconceptions and simplistic black and white (no pun intended!) formulas they were taught.

The book plunges you into a vast panorama of ambiguities and contradictions. It was clear to me from the first paragraph that Faulkner was a genius. In the whole history of literature, he surely stands among a select few at the very pinnacle of greatness.

Go Down Moses is a tremendous struggle to get through. Some parts are straightforward and easy, but there are others that you can't hope to make literal sense of. You're bombarded by its twisted grammar. Its frantic confusion. Its endlessly unresolved sentences. But through these, Faulkner ultimately conveys the pain of history -- past and present. The emotion of that pain seems more real to him than the specific incidents it sprang from. Why else would a book begun in pre-Civil War Mississippi -- entirely skip it -- picking up again a generation later?

This book is about the South. Having read it, Faulkner walked beside me every step of the way I took through his state. But this book also has a sub-theme that should not be overlooked. Faulkner was a profound environmentalist, although sharply contrasted with how we usually think of that term. Hunters don't much fit the mold of environmentalism -- and Faulkner was an avid one of that lot. So, in that sense, along with all the sociological, he can shake you up pretty good! Go Down Moses contains some of the most wrenching descriptions you could hope to find on the loss of wilderness. There is nothing ambiguous in his portrayal of that loss. Faulkner may confound everything you thought you believed of Southern sociology, but in an environmental sense, he leaves no room for confusion. Leave those trees standing!

This book will grip you; I can't imagine it having a lesser effect. Like all truly great art, it should change you forever.

Get a Family Tree
This book is undeniably one of the greatest novels I have ever read. Never would I have made it past the fifth page if it hadn't been 1) required reading for an undergrad course in college; 2) for the help of the almighty Cliff Notes. Actually, this is one book where my professor recommended everybody have the Cliff Notes. I didn't understand why until we started reading it. Then he told us to take out the Cliff Notes and turn to the family tree. Ah, yes, this helps make sense of all of those people, as well as help explain the complicated relationships between them.

I definitely think this book would be great for group discussion. A dedicated individual could no doubt garner symbolism, themes, and the basic plot on his or her own. But the story is so complex, I think you get a lot more out of it in a group, where the ideas can be shared and brainstormed.

Whatever the case, I recommend reading this book. Faulkner's look at the people and their environment of the South is amazing, and it is one of those books that you will find is often alluded to in other works. Spectacular book.

A great book for parents of High School teens
I received this book as a gift when my son was a junior in high school. He is now graduated from college and my daughter is a college sophmore. This book is the BEST parenting book I have ever read during all my years as a parent. Both my kids are very different yet this book touched on each of their challenges with practical and thoughtful advice as to how to address the different phases that each child went through. Many times, I followed their guidance, sometimes not sure if it would work, and was always pleased when it did! I give this gift to all my friends who are at this stage and always get an enthusiastic response after they have read it. It was truly my guidebook for these years and is dogeared from use! I highly recommend this book!

Best Guide Yet!
As a college placement counselor in a highly-competitive preparatory school for many years, I have found this book to be most valuable in preparing parents for dealing with the angst of a young adult who is going away to college. It also tells you what to expect during their first years away. Buy it early in a student's senior year for the greatest benefit. This is a classic and a jewel!

Great book!
This book is very easy to read and provides useful information to parents of new college students. I am the author of The ABC's of College Life, a hip street-smart guide for college bound students and I give Letting Go two thumbs up!!
