Making Special Gifts
Delightful to read...Easy to do...Filled with ideas! Popular artist Mary Engelbreit's book on making handmade gifts and wrappings is perfect for those who like to give others tokens of appreciation and love. The spiral-bound book with glossy pages contains page-size photos alongside a page with step-by-step instructions, additional gift ideas and usually instructions for making coordinating, unusual tags for the gift. Leafing through the book right after it arrived, I immediately found projects I wanted to start right away--a new baby gift; things to put in a "care" package for a college age child and a thank you gift for a kind neighbor. The book contains a number of patterns, such as patterns for shapes of gift tags which I've used not only for gift wrappings but also as patterns for scrapbook pages. This book would be great as a gift for someone who enjoys crafts, someone who likes to give handmade gifts, someone who teaches others such as a teacher, scout leader, activities director, etc. or as a gift for yourself.

Filled with fantastic ideas!
I absolutely love this book! This is not a huge craft book, but I was able to use it more than any other craft book I own. That's saying a lot. I created three Sam the Snowman kits, this fall, as Christmas gifts for my four nieces, and for my own children. We did get to put it to the test, this winter...it works! And it held up well! I learned to work with etching cream, and made gorgeous wine glasses in no time. I made decorative boxes using Mod Podge and playbox sand. I also tried my hand at painting with ceramic paints onto plain, white mugs and vases. The paint gets baked-on in the oven, and is holding up well, so far. I not only saved a lot of money, this year, by hand-crafting Christmas gifts, but I feel that I have shown my love even more by taking the time to create unique gifts for friends and family. Even if you do not follow the directions exactly, it is an excellent starting point when you need a clever idea. This is the first time I have actually sat down to write a review of a book. It was that important to me that I tell you what a find this book is!

My first review and my first Mary Engelbreit book
I discovered Mary Engelbreit by chance and I'm now hooked on her series. Some books are better than others, but this one had me crafting for all my friends. I'm definitely not a crafty person, but this book held my hand. If I can do these projects, anyone can!

likeable
I do like Richard Simmons, and I love true to life stories of how people have lost weight. My only wish is that this book would have had more pictures.
Otherwise helpful and inspirational.

Give It Up: And Other Short Stories

Nine paranoid tales by Franz Kafka adapted to stark, black-and-white comics by Peter Kuper, whose illustrations and covers appear regularly in the New York Times, Time and Business Week. More than just straight adaptations, these clever interpretations of Kafka's tales bring out the dark humor latent in Kafka's work, better known for its despair and somberness. Heralded by Rolling Stone, Kuper's art is bold, powerful, and perfectly suited for Kafka.
Average review score:

Tremedously powerful representation of Kafka's short stories
Brilliant interpretation of Kafka's nine short tales by illustrator Peter Kuper. This thin book is neither for the faint-hearted nor for those who prefer a light-hearted comic read. Kuper brings into powerful focus the intensity and dark, twisted side of humanity as Kafka would have wished it done. One is literally drawn into the stories by the compelling and solid strokes of the artist. A graphic novel of the highest standard

A Perfect Match
Kafka stories, with Kuper artwork. Kuper's style seems to match Kafka in a very pleasant, memorable way...

Reasons to stop smoking and encouragement
"Give It Up" is basically a collection of arguments for why someone should quit smoking. It starts with why a person smokes, then follows with how it hurts the smoker, the benefits of quitting and then finishes with stories from people who have quit. While this may be beneficial to some people it ignores the fact that for most people the reason they have a hard time quitting smoking is because it is an addiction. Many, many smokers would quit today if they were able to and all the ones I know already know the dangers of smoking and the health benefits of quitting, but that has not helped them to quit. There may be some smokers that benefit from a detailed discourse on how bad smoking is for you and how much better you are if you quit. Still others may benefit by using it as an aid to keep them motivated. If they are on a nicotine patch program, hypnosis program, or some other program then reading this may help to keep their motivation level high and increase their success. However, the greatest benefit of this book may be as a preventative with teenagers to make sure that they realize just how bad smoking can be.

really helped me quit!
When Anne spoke about my higher power wanting me to be a nonsmoker, that is what got to me the most. I know this intuitively and it resonated within me to hear it verbalized in such a way.

Worth Reading
An inspirational story with a happy ending despite an indifferent government system.
I wonder as John did why it took so long.

Never give up a veterans journey.
I FIND THIS BOOK TO BE VERY INSPIRATIONAL. IT PORTRAYS WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF YOU JUST KEEP TRYING TO DO THE BEST YOU CAN. GOOD THINGS CAN HAPPEN.
IT ALSO GIVES YOU INSIGHT INTO WHAT HANDICAPPED PERSONS LIVES ARE LIKE, [FROM THE INSIDE] THIER OWN PERSPECTIVE.
THE BOOK WAS ENTERTAINING AS WELL AS INSPIRATIONAL. I WOULD CLASSIFY IT AS AN OVERALL [GOOD READ, FOR AN INDIVIDUAL OR AS A VERY GOOD BOOK FOR GROUP DISCUSSIONS ON MOTIVATIONS AND PERSERVERANCE.

Or Give Me Death : A Novel of Patrick Henry's Family
Published in Paperback by Gulliver Books Paperbacks (01 August, 2004)
Author: Ann Rinaldi
Amazon base price: $6.95
Average review score:

A Review from Scotchtown
As a guide at Scotchtown, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and felt that Ms. Rinaldi brought the house to life with the voices of Mr. Henry's children. The Henry family dealt with complicated issues in growing up 200 years ago just as young people must deal with difficult issues today.

Just to clarify a point, however--Sarah was not kept in the dry well. Scotchtown has a summer bedroom in the English basement, which is very typical for any 18th century Virginia home, and it is there that Sarah stayed during her tragic illness. It has windows for sunlight and a fireplace for heat in winter. Given the options that Mr. Henry had for her care and that we believe he loved Sarah very much, it was the best he could do at the time. The dry well is a completely separate structure used only for food storage. [...]

Or Give Me Death...Awesome
Or Give Me Death is an awesome book. It gives you the perspective of Patrick Henry's two daughters, Patsy and Anne. They give their opinions on their mother who hs gone crazy and is being kept in the cellar of their home and each other. Patsy takes over as "head of the household" when their mother Sarah Henry goes "crazy" and tries to drown her son Edward. She gains an overwhelming amount of power very quickly. Patsy feels Anne has been turned against her and when she realizes that one of them might have their mother's madness she becomes very worried. Anne finds out who has inherited it but she doesn't want any of her family members to know who it is. Anne talks about how hard Patsy is on her. All around it is a very interesting book that history lovers and non-history lovers alike will love.

Autobiography of a Survivor
Born to well-to-do bohemian parents, this is a frank account of a sensitive soul damaged early by the self-absorption and dismissive treatment of her alcoholic parents. The story traces Joni Nebel's childhood in various European countries, teen years in American Catholic boarding schools, her life as an airline flight attendant, and through many struggles in her search for love, acceptance and personal validity in an indifferent world. Eventually Joni succumbs to alcoholism and poverty, exacerbated by bi-polar mental illness which goes undiagnosed for many years. From somewhere in her despair she finds the spark of will to live, and gradually pulls herself up from the abyss.

This book offers a stirring tale of exotic travel, international parties, multi-marriages, love affairs, yachts, and a fast life, on a roller coaster from riches to rags and then at last to stability and peace. I recommend this inspiring read to anyone, especially those in the grip of addictions or hopeless depression.

The Sick and the Tired
This is a fine memoir detailing a barely conceivable life's journey. Despite undiagnosed Alcoholism and Schizophrenia, Ms. Rhodes was able to find a path to survival, and ultimate serenity in her life.

Her career path included Airline Hostess, Nurse, and Prostitute.
Her travels make fascinating reading, and the message of hope will be inspiring to anyone troubled by any form of addiction.

Wild and Hopeful
Jon Nebel Rhodes speaks for millions of us in the title of her epic journal "Don't Give Up Before The Miracle". Her life reads like Venus' wish list, but every word resonates with innocent truth. Whether the salacious descriptions of her global life experiences or THE HOPE she offers in recovery attracted me more is hard to say. This book chronicles the life of a beautiful woman in the crucible of addiction in contemporary American life.

Hmmmmmm, not bad I suppose.......
Well that was disapointing! From the blurb and front cover I expected a great story about Mal fighting all odds and outwitting her sexist English teacher, but instead she hardly did ANYTHING! Plus Mallory acted in this gross girlie way all through the book! I am SO glad she leaves the BSC soon after. Pity Dawn couldn't return and take her place! Take my advice, DON'T buy it unless you are a hardened Mallory fan. Best buy a different Mallory book instead!

Nothing's Inpossible!!
i loved the way mallory stood up to her rights and had the nerve to speak about this to mr cobbs, and her BSC friends stood on her side in support if only other girls had this more courage as mallory had she certainly shows of what she's made of.Go,Mallory!!

Excellent book on subtle sexism in schools
Bravo, Mallory! I love how when she realized Mr. Cobb was focusing his attention on the boys and virtually ignoring the girls, she did something about it and her BSC friends stood by her all the way! Yes, women and girls have come a long way, but society needs to go further and eradicate subtle sexism that still permeates our society. The girls from the Fabulous Five series need to take some hints from the BSC. Thanks to the BSC, girls today and tomorrow will have greater opportunities than ever!

Disappointed
I bought this book mostly out of the strong recommendations of the all the reviewers, the book's posted summary, and out of a desire to find some motivation that will keep me going. Well here is the book in a nut shell: 1. Set a date to commit to your program, plaster that date everywhere 2. Find some compelling reason for sticking with your program 3. Listen to meditation tapes that you develop by reading a script out of the book 4. Seven ways, which are hardly profound, to track your weight loss such as measuring your waist line every week 5. Basic nutritional advice such as don't starve yourself and drink 8 glasses of water a day.

I also bought this book hoping it would greatly compliment the Body for Life book that I recently read. The book presented many of the same ideas found in Body for Life but fell way short of furthering anything found in Body for Life. Not to say the book is a waste or without merit and the meditation tapes are worth a try but if you were to only buy one book on this subject Body for Life goes above and beyond any of the ideas presented in this book.

A "must read" for health and fitness enthusiasts.
Chiropractic physician Scott Lewis draws upon his years of practical and professional experience to show how we can stay fit throughout our lives by setting up a fitness program that will meet our particular needs; how to burn more fat with less effort; how to create a constant and continuous motivation with a single, simple process; how to accelerate the results of our fitness program; why we should eat more to weigh less; and the seven ways to measure our fitness program results without using a scale. The Fitness Groove is "must" reading for anyone who has ever gone from fitness program to program, health fad to fad in frustrated discouragement.

BEST BOOK ON FITNESS EVER!
This is one of the finest fitness book on the market today. It combines motivation and fitness in a very simple down to earth manner.Highly Recommended for anyone looking to get and stay fit.
