Try not to cry, this book is amazing
I read this book for a book report, and I got so into it, that I finished it in a day. I was drawn into Ron's life, and I didn't want to leave! His story was (I know this is really cliche but...) Inspirational. My point of view changed, from that moment. I realized that even if I felt like God's grace wasn't prevalent in my life, it actually was, because God has kept me safe throughout my life. There's multiple reasons that Ron had to go through this ordeal, but I believe that at least one reason was to reach people, people that feel lost or hurt, or like there's no reason to live, becasue Ron's been there, and he's been through that. God bless him, ans I pray that more people will read this book, ans see How God has work great things through this accident. I throughly enjoyed this book though.

Life Is An Attitude A Tragedy Turns to Triumph
I bought this book last year after seeing Ron Heagy on a television program. I was so encouraged when I listened to him that night while hearing him speak. Then I found out about this book.
I cannot tell you what a wonderful and inspiring book it is to read. Mr. Heagy really captures your heart when you read all the things he went through after his accident which left him a quadraplegic. After I read the book I passed it to a friend and she read it that night and her husband read it in one sitting!
This book will inspire, encourage and challege you in your life. It is a wonderful depiction of his life and hardships and what God has done for him despite everything he has been through and will eventually go through.
It is a highly recommended book to read for anyone....young and old. Take time to buy and read this book! You won't regret it and you will want to pass it to every friend you have to read it.

Incredibly Inspirational.
Here's another one of those books by authors who have had a rough life. The theme is the same as most of the books in this category: "If I can do it, you can do it."

This book is different. More than a challenge book, this one is a moving, emotional autobiography that will fill your heart with admiration and a desire to do something for others. The movie, Pay It Forward, came to mind several times as I hungrily read page after page. I just didn't want to put the book down. Several times, while reading "Never Give Up!" on an airplane, the emotion welled up strongly enough to bring tears to my eyes and a "catch" in my heart. I have not read many books that grabbed me and held me as this one did.

Ron Heagy is a quadriplegic. He's seriously handicapped physically, but powerfully strong spiritually. His love of God was present before his life-changing experience when he was 18 (no, I won't spoil your reading by telling you what happened), but became considerably stronger over the years. Even if you are not a deep believer, you will be impressed by how Ron's faith has made a tremendous difference for him.

Today, Ron Heagy makes a difference in the lives of other people as a motivational speaker and a leader in service to the disabled community. As you read about what he has accomplished, as he shares his story, you will be thankful that Ron and others like him are around to influence us. I was inspired by his struggle, but perhaps even more moved by what he has done in spite of potentially overwhelming odds.

This autobiography is filled with 39 chapters, an average of seven pages long, each sharing a chapter in the author's life. Co-author Donita Dyer, who helped shape this awesome story into book form, did a masterful job. We are right with Ron, inside his head and his heart, as he moves from one experience to another on a roller-coaster ride of a life. You can't help being thoroughly engaged in this story, as an individual, as a member of society, and as someone who influences the lives of others every day. There are several aspects of this book that will be particularly valuable for corporate executives, teachers, and others who are looked up to because of who they are . . . or should be.

Warning: You won't be able to put this book down until you finish it. Then you'll want to give it to someone else close to you to read. This valuable book is priced low enough that it can easily be given as a gift. Buy several copies.

Peeking through the window
This book held very special meaning to me as the "Uncle Johnny" and "Nellie Carson" in the book, were my parents. I had heard bits of pieces of the stories Shirley tells in the book, from my parents over the years. Shirley provided a beautifully written context around these stories. I felt as if I were standing outside of a window in Crested Butte, peering back into my parents' and relatives' lives. It was an eerie yet comforting feeling for me. Needless to say, a few tears were shed during the course of reading this book.

The essence of Crested Butte is beautifully captured in this book - of times gone by, fiercely loyal friendships, a unique blend of ethnic diversity, socioeconomic hardship we cannot begin to understand, and a tenacity to make it through the hard times. "Don't Be Give Up" was a mantra of my grandmother's that I believe lives on in our family blood today. Thanks Shirley, for capturing the memories on paper and for giving us a very unique view of how World War II affected the lives of a fiercely proud people in a small coal-mining town in Colorado.

Warmth, humanity and decency radiates from every page
While I have no doubt that this book can be enjoyed by children as well as adults (after all, I enjoyed at 60 years old), I would certainly recommend this to a parent to read to a young daughter or granddaughter. Hickman really captures the "feel" of childhood through the eyes of a young girl. This book made me pause and think of my own childhood and I realized how much gender affected my perceptions. I would have conceded this point without argument on a rational basis, but this book made me feel it on an emotional one.

The best part of the book, however, is the warmth, humanity and decency that radiates from every page. This is a book that could easily have lapsed into sentimentality, but never did. Hickman has obviously told this story with love and affection for her family, but it is not affected. They are not the paper dolls with which she played as a child; they are real human beings. Their love of country and family shines out in each differently, but yet is a common theme to all.

A superb book!
This book is very well written. The stories in it come alive and so do the characters.

As all youngsters do, we attached meanings to words that made sense to us. The author does this in a humorous and meaningful
way. This book brought back many childhood memories to me.

Her ability to tie this in with World War II and the people in small western town makes this a book you don't want to put down.
The elements of suspense, sadness, humor, and the thoughts of gownups are real to us all.

THIS BOOK "SAVED MY MARRIAGE"
There are three of you in a marriage. YOU, ME and US. All three need to be happy. This book can get you there. It saved our marriage.

A profound, important, and implication-rich book
For me this book is one of the most profound and important books I have ever read about relationships and communication. Although it is written as a book about marital relationships, it has implications for every kind of relationship, and not only intimate or dyadic ones. And, although it is written as a pop psychology book, I think it makes a real contribution to the social-scientific understanding of relationships and communication -- that is, it stands up well as a general model of communication and relationship. I think it is a great book and would be of great value not only to those trying to solve relationship problems but to those wanting to understand the ways in which self and relationship are intertwined in general. It illuminates all of the areas of one's life in which one communicates with others and, as another reader said, can be as valuable for understanding past relationships as for dealing with present ones.

Excellent, excellent book.
This book has really come to the rescue in my life. I am 24 and my partner 21. We've been together 8 months and started having conflicts after moving in together about 2 months ago. After a big fight one day, she brought this book home and we agreed to read it together every day.

Since then, there's been a massive change for us. A difficult change too, but so worthwhile. Margie and Jordan are really great people, and they make the book funny, informative and loving, but strong enough to shake you up. It's just so great... learning to learn is difficult, but ultimately incredibly rewarding. 1000 stars!

differences
I notice that some reviews refer to ADD and some refer to LD. The author writes of learning differences which could apply to children with different problems. I really like the way she writes. It is warm and from the heart. It helps put labels aside and look at the child and what the child can do. Another book that does that is Whoa Wiggle-worm which addresses name calling (by adults and children), helping others, understanding and self-conrol.

Honest and Uplifting
Unlike so many other kids' books on the subject, this one doesn't pretend that ADHD is cute or painless. It heals because it faces up to the pain and rejection, while offering honest solutions. Moreover, it assures the child that ADD has a uniquely positive side. I bought a boxful for my clients.

What a gift!
I actually had trouble breathing when I read this book! It was as if someone had followed my son around and wrote a book just for him. What a self-esteem booster for the kid with a "learning difference" to know that they are not alone! I plan on getting extra copies for every special teacher I know as well as my son's doctor. I wish it were in the hands of every elementary teacher in the nation, as well as the hands of every special learner!

Half lies or half truths?
I half agree with my brother. The parts that portray me as a loving, intelligent, handsome, and in all other ways perfect young man are true. The other 95% are entirely made up, and should be regarded as the ravings of a lunatic. Unless mom is reading this and Christmas or my birthday are coming up, in which case it's all true, witty, erudite, and otherwise the most wonderful thing anyone has ever written...

LIES!!! ALL LIES!!!
Please do not believe a word this crazy woman says in this book. She made it all up. Sure, it's funny, but it bears no relation whatsoever to the truth. Nope, not a bit. I have no clue where she got all those crazy ideas. It was nothing like that, I promise you -- I'm her son, so I ought to know. So only buy it for the humor value of a completely fictionalized account of raising two extremely obnoxious children (the exact opposite of the real me and my brother, I assure you).

How to Live with Teenagers!! By Linda Fink
Linda has done it again with her book on teenagers, I really enjoyed her books on raising goats but not many of us have had that experiance. But many of us have had or will have teenagers.Maybe this book should be compulsory reading for prospective teen parents. I think many will relate to her experiences, but doubt whether many of us could write so hilariously. I laughed all the way through. I have also bought a copy for my son amd daughter in law who have three sons aproaching that age.I know they will laugh as much as I did.Maybe even learn something too!! If you wish to learn how not to play Croquet, there is a chapter for you, ever played with kids who make up the rules just after you made the shot! Linda has too. Her kids were certainly inventive at making a chroquet course into an obstacle course!! I hope Linda still has some more books in her I will certainly be on the lookout for them.

Great Book!
Very enlightening for people stating, "I don't really want to quit, I've tried to quit and I can't, or I don't really think I have a problem."

Dr. Tate explains how to include rational thinking techniques (REBT) to affect your behaviors. Rather than just trying to solely change your behaviors (drinking), which almost always fails, you must first change your thinking (irrational beliefs). Once understood, the relationship between your thinking, emotions, and behaviors will not only help you battle addictions, but also every day challenges.

Each time I sit down to read the book, I end up reading it cover to cover.

A Practical Alternative to the 12-Step Approach
Dr. Tate has written a thoughtful, practical guide for overcoming self-defeating addictive behavior. The book is an easy to read, self-help guide, which focuses on the application of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy for quitting alcohol and drugs now and for good. Dr. Tate explains and shows how to take control of your behavior and emotions--without having to attend meetings for the rest of your life. By recognizing and eliminating the irrational beliefs behind addictive behavior, alcohol/drug-free living becomes a natural way of daily life, not a meeting after meeting challenge to try and remain sober, one-day-at-a-time. Alcohol: How To Give It Up and be Glad You Did, is an exceptional book, which answers many of the questions traditional 12-step programs do not. Required reading for professionals and lay-persons in need of alternatives to largely innefective policies of America's Addiction Treatment Industry.

A wonderfull book for the professional and the lay person
Dr. Tate's book on how to stop the use of alchol provides an informative and enlightening persective on the application of cognitive-behavioral princples in treating substance abuse problems. It provides clinical and practical information to the clinician and the lay-person/client. Dr. Tate's book is a must for any library on the treatment of alchol abuse/dependence.

Never Ever Five Up! Survival From Cancer!
This book is one of the best books I have ever read. It's loaded with powerful information on how to survive from Cancer, and live a healthy productive life. The book gives real hope and powerful testimonies from families. Every one needs to know about the author and inventor of China No.1 Tian Xian anti-cancer supplement Professor Wang Zhen Guo. It is a must read.

Source of Encouragement
This book is a big help to cancer survivors as well as their family & friends. It spoke of people who were already at the last stages of cancer and to whom which doctors already pronounced as "no hope". These people were able to overcome their cancer successfully with the use of Chinese herbs.

Compelling
This book is amazing. Every story brought tears to my eyes. Every single young adult (some are probabally adults by now) is amazing in their own way. I can't wait to see more of Mrs. Waldman's work! You have to read this book to realize that not every teen in America is on their way down, to a life on the streets. Many people think all teens are bad news...read this it will change your mind. I wish all kids in america were like these amazing kids

Read "Teens" and Renew Your Faith in America's Youth
The stories of the 30 teens who contributed to this book by Jackie Waldman truly inspired and moved me. Their courage to reach beyond their own personal pain and give to others is nothing short of heroic. Our country is in good hands with young people like these contributing and getting involved. If you have children, teens or pre-teens, this book should be required reading. Thank you Jackie for sharing their stories with us. I would also recommend Jackie's first book "The Courage to Give" and look forward to any follow-up books that she may have in the works.

A Blueprint for Transformation
Dr. Margaret Paul's latest book provides a blueprint for integrating spirituality into daily life. Unlike many other self-help books, Do I Have to Give up Me to Be Loved by God? takes on the deeper and more challenging questions that speak to the attachment to old patterns and resistance to change that so often prevents genuine transformation. Dr. Paul provides the reader with practical tools, offered in a step-by-step process that is designed to neutralize the negative conditioning that blocks the ability to access spiritual connection. She offers a model that if conscientiously followed will lead not only to the kind of self-acceptance that is the goal of psychotherapy, but to the deep and profound spiritual connection that is the goal of all religions.

Six Steps in Search of Self
Dr. Paul's illuminating new book, DO I HAVE TO GIVE UP ME TO BE LOVED BY GOD? looks at the disconnection we feel within and with others as a result of (in the broadest sense) "spiritual abuse" that we have suffered. As Dr. Paul says, "Giving children anything other than love and compassion is spiritual abuse because all unloving behavior toward children creates an ongoing problem in their relationship with God. Any behavior that teaches children that they must be different (smarter, more polite, more obedient) IN ORDER TO BE LOVED [emphasis mine] by God -- or by their parents -- is spiritual abuse. Any behavior by an adult which disconnects a child from God is spiritual abuse. And any behavior that undermines a child's belief in God as an infinite source of love and compassion and wisdom that is always available to that child is spiritual abuse" (p.18). I particularly liked learning more about the false beliefs we have about God and our relationship with whatever term we each use to name our Higher Power. The Inner Bonding definition of loving intrigues me: Loving behavior is that which contributes to our own and others' spiritual and emotional growth. Often, what looks loving is just codependent, and in our addictive society, much confusion results when we act out the belief that if others really loved us, they would do what we want. If you read this book, you will learn about a new way of looking at behavior -- not in terms of judgment (a major controlling device of many religions) -- but in terms of the good reasons that parts of us have for our behavior. Life, according to Dr. Paul, is a journey about learning and loving for everyone, not about hellfire and damnation and the chosen. I know that just about every person on a journey thinks that s/he has just the right tools and resources for healing and personal empowerment, but in my experience there are few, if any, approaches and processes that are as encompassing, simple yet profound, practical, and portable as the Inner Bonding process. DO I HAVE TO GIVE UP ME TO BE LOVED BY GOD? builds on Dr. Paul's other 6 books that have so much to teach about one's relationship with self, others, and Spirit. Yes, there are many books and people and therapies and techniques out there promising us love, success, happiness, etc., but my whole world -- self, family, friends, career, spirituality -- is different because one of Dr. Paul's books literally dropped in my path 8 years ago. We live in times that are often filled with much conflict and pain, but also have so much potential for soul growth with new ways of learning to bring the best of ourselves to ourselves, to others, to the planet. Margaret Paul's work is a powerful tool for transformation. You owe it to yourself to read this book!

Tools to Turn Your Life Around, Batteries Included!
I have been using Margaret Paul's tools consistently for over 9 years. If you have parts of your life that you want to change, you can choose to use this simple set of tools every day and change your life profoundly, often faster than you could have imagined. The tools are simple enough that you can teach children how to do them. Yet powerful enough that unwanted patterns that have persisted for a lifetime can lose their power and go away.

The other thing that comes with using these tools is, that by implementing the connection process, one seems to be able to draw on deep, limitless power. I know of no other process that brings the same sense of innate strength that helps you persist and carry out the tasks that need to be done to transform your life. Thus batteries are included.

What will make the difference here, is whether you can make a time every day to work the six simple steps Margaret presents. It doesn't take a lot of time. It takes consistency and growing an awareness to know when it's time to use the simple tools. Once you get the basics down, it's something you can do driving in your car, waiting in line at the grocery store, or lying in bed at night before you go to sleep. For me it's become as natural as eating and breathing. Her latest book ties together all her earlier works and focuses on the spiritual dimensions of this connection process. One does not have to believe in God to do this work, or FOR IT TO WORK. I can guarantee that. I've seen many people use the tools without focusing on the spiritual aspects. I can also tell you that if you value or seek a realtionship with God/a Higher Power, this connection process will greatly enhance that relationship. Personally, as I have been able to work with and deepen the connection process, I have directly experienced God to a greater and greater extent in my everyday life.

Do I Have to Give Up Me to Be Loved by God is a beautiful work for those that want to heal the parts of their lives that hurt. For those that want to take that a step further and reap the spiritual rewards of this connection process, this book is a wonderful guide.

For those familiar with Dr. Paul's work, this book takes it deeper. I had wonderful Aha's, as the lightbulbs turned on deep in my being. This book describes the tools, that if practiced with consistency, can be the best gift you ever give yourself!
