An honest account of the Penitente religionThis book is based on a thorough study of the Penitente religion. After reading the significant analysis given, many myths and absurdities of the Penitente religion and practices were clarified for me. The Penitentes, a religious group, that have been falsely persecuted for decades have finally been accurately represented. The contribution of this research is extremely significant for all of society especially anyone interested in knowing more about religious studies or New Mexico's history.

St. Silouan the Athonite is a living icon of ChristThis is an expanded version of the out-of-print classic from the same author of A MONK OF MOUNT ATHOS (see customer review from Columbus, Georgia). Both St. Silouan and Archimandrite Sophrony are remarkable men who know the Uncreated Light from experience. These are men who can be guides to a world that has lost comprehension of what a real Christian is and what a human being, free of negative emotions and passions of carnality and pride can be. It is an extraordinary portrait. Archimandrite Sophrony is also someone who practiced eastern meditation prior to his re-conversion to Christianity and he knows from experience the danger of confusing the blissful silent expanse of the human soul, with the infinite God. Not to be missed by anyone who wants to know the essence of Orthodox Christianity from a contemporary 20th century witness.

Excellent bookAn truly wonderful treatment of the statistics of scans (clusters of events in some window of time and/or space). The first half of the book walks through applications & formulas, the second half adds hard-core details, proofs, etc. It is well written and contains many good examples with copious references to primary literature.
This book is far better than Runs and Scans with Applications by N. Balakrishnan and M. Koutras, which I judge to be an effort to impress the reader with how well the authors can write convoluted
statistical proofs rather than actually teach the reader something useful, a tendency in statistical texts which I despise.

Two Great Souls in Coversation About ChristHere is a dialogue between two great souls -- Mother Teresa and Brother Roger -- about the nature and need for prayer in the world, about community in the Body of Christ, about holding Christ in your heart by being of service to others. More than anything, it is a book of prayer and service. Get this book and relish each of the topics. You will find it on your nightstand for many weeks as you read and reread the thoughts and insights of these remarkable people. They are remarkable in that they are like you and me -- except they devoted their lives to service, reconciliation, community, and love for the unloved.

Neglected masterpieceAlthough Hayek's influence on economics and political science has been profound, his work in psychology, of which this book is the sole product, is still relatively unknown. This is unfortunate, not only because Hayek is a great psychologist, in the same league as Helmholtz, Fechner, and Freud, but also because his more influential work is often based on the conceptual framework established in The Sensory Order. I can think of several reasons for the neglect of this book. First, it is not easy to read. Despite a lucid style, the ideas contained are so complex and expressed in so compressed a form that several readings are required to fully appreciate them. Second, the ideas are so revolutionary that we still fail to grasp their implications, though even Hayek himself, it should be said, failed to address them adequately. Hebb's Organization of Behavior, the first explicit proposal of Hebbian learning and cell assemblies, and Gallistel's Organization of Action, a compilation of classic works on motor coordination, contained similar ideas, but they are nowhere as original and profound as this book.

With vivid language and eyewitness detailIn Separate And Peculiar: Old Order Mennonite Life In Ontario, author Isaac Horst, an Old Order Mennonite, thoroughly explains the customs, beliefs, and culture of his people in Ontario - both in English and in Pennsylvanian German. This bilingual presentation shows the Mennonite community through the eyes and story of a typical boy, Menno Martin, who matures over time at home, on the farm, in school, and at church. Eventually he marries Grace and becomes a preacher. Vivid language and eyewitness detail bring to life what it is like to live in an Old Order Mennonite community, from barn raising, quilting, and butchering day to youth singings and being baptized as a member of the church. With black-and-white illustrations, a glossary of typical Mennonite terms, and a captivating point of view, Separate And Peculiar is strongly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in the Old Order Mennonite community.

Exceptional Moral ExamplesHaving grown up in the Orthodox Church, I have had a somewhat limited understanding of saints, which has been changed by my contact with American Protestants. This book offers a very contemporary understanding of saints, giving the stories of many people we ignore in the Orthodox world, but people who offer tremendous examples of God's power and love. Because I did not know anything about them, the saints I enjoyed reading about were Clarence Jordan, Martin Niemoller, and Karl Barth. I am surprised by these because they are not the norm. Author Howell uses a definition that seems to be consonant with Christian teaching, though I doubt that many of the people featured in this book will have feast days on the calendar.
