Scholarly work
This is the first English translation of this work. A scholarly, well thoughout trip through the many philosophical traditions that influenced the development of economics in the XVIII century. The book is written from a Catholic perspective. A serious work for the serious scholar.

Listening to Heloise: The Voice of a Twelfth-Century Woman (The New Middle Ages)

Cutting-edge Scholarship
Anyone who has ever read Abelard's Historia calamitatum and the Letters of Abelard and Heloise will be very interested in this collection of fifteen essays on Heloise (a.d. ?1101-1163/64?), Abbess of the Paraclete. My favorite is "Authenticity Revisited" by John Marenbon, which is a breath of fresh air in "one of the longest-running controversies in medieval scholarship". Marenbon and most - but not all - of the scholars who contributed to this book believe that Heloise did indeed write the famous letters which bear her name. Two essays, by Constant J. Mews and John O. Ward and Neville Chiavaroli, examine a newly re-evaluated series of letters which may well be love letters exchanged by Abelard and Heloise before their ill-fated marriage! Most of the other essays fall into the category of literary criticism, several from a feminist perspective, but the opening essay, by historian Mary Martin McLauglin, tells us more about "Heloise the Abbess: The Expansion of the Paraclete".

Proves that being a younger sibling can pay off.
This book is devoted to the younger sibling. Even though you take a lot of name calling, and worse, from your big bro's and sisters, it proves to pay off in the end.

Engaging A Rule of Life for Everyday Living
As a spiritual director I am constantly meeting people who want to establish a rule of life. Often they may not realize that is what they desire but upon reflection they uncover a desire to establish some spiritual habits that will help them pay attention to the holy. Debra Farrington's book is a wonderful resource for this. Her historical research lays the foundation and is very helpful but what I really like is the way she helps a person reflect on their life and begin to take steps in the eight areas she suggests for engaging their own rule of life. I recommend this book for all spiritual adventurers but especially for those who are seriously seeking to grow in their spiritual lives by attending to their life as a "rule" for maturing spiritually.

This is a book with a surprise!
Living Freight is a very good book. I liked reading about Emma and how she faced her hardships. I found it interesting that Emma went from living on the streets of Manchester to a good home overseas, where she found quite a surprise!

An extraordinary book
Sister Mary Jean here brings together a number of essays printed over the years in her Order's newsletters. On a variety of topics, they are all rooted in Scripture, Tradition and daily Christian life. They examine what it means to participate here and now in the mysteries of the Church's sacramental year. The book might well be used for an adult study group in a Christian parish of most denominations.

The Luminous Eye: The Spiritual World Vision of Saint Ephrem (Cistercian Studies Series, No 124)

Poetry and wisdom
I've read this book twice, and have had the pleasure of introducing a number of people to the wonderful hymns of St. Ephrem. Here is an introduction to much more than the writings of an obscure ancient poet; the book is a primer in ancient Christian spirituality (perhaps just occasionally with some anachronistically modern "spirituality"; for that, maybe the book should get 4 1/2 stars). Great themes: paradox, e.g. God hidden and revealed in the Incarnation; the "two witnesses" of Scripture and nature; spirituality, sacrament, and symbolism; patterns of complementarity and contrast in the sacred scriptures; role of the intellect in the life of faith; theosis and exchange, etc. If you admire the writings of Dante, George MacDonald, Charles Williams or C. S. Lewis, you will find a true forbear of theirs here. British composer Sir John Tavener has drawn on Ephrem for texts of at least three of his compositions, including the superlative "Thunder Entered Her" of 1990. I included some of Ephrem's verse in a course and after that, students were coming by my office to tell about how moved by or interested in Ephrem, etc. they found themselves to be. I also recommend Brock's book of translations, HYMNS ON PARADISE. Buy both, and read them. They help Christians to contemplate the Mysteries.
