Celtic Gifts: Orders of Ministry in the Celtic Church
Published in Paperback by Canterbury Pr Norwich (September, 1997)
Author: Robert Van De Weyer
Amazon base price: $11.95
Used price: $10.59
Average review score:

A brilliant vision
Mr van de Weyer describes in an easy-to-read narrative way, far from hiding behind theological issues, how Christianity (here in an example the Anglican church, but it could be adopted by all denominations!) could become more easily accessed by all people by involving them in ministry. Church must be a concern for everyone, not only for vicars, the author states. And the Celtic Church with its numerous saints (who really were holy women and men, judged by their lives) has enough examples to provide us all with ministries, according to our abilities and gifts. I can recommend this book to all who think of changes in their church and don't know how to begin.

Changing Orders: The Evolution of the World's Armies, 1945 to the Present
Published in Hardcover by Facts on File, Inc. (July, 1994)
Author: Peter G. Tsouras
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $15.95
Average review score:

Excellent summary of recent trends in world armies.
Peter Tsouras has produced an extemely useful work for military analysts and anyone studying post WW II trends in the major armed forces of the world. He focuses on land forces, with some examination of air power in relation to ground combat operations. He makes extensive use of secondary sources and provides useful endnotes at the end of each chapter. The book is divided chronologically into decade blocks. Within each decade he surveys the significant events shaping the evolutions of the world's leading land military powers such as Great Britain, France, the former Soviet Union, and of course the United States. The book is written to be used as a reference work or read as a continuous narrative. With the exception of John Keegan's now dated, The World's Armies, published in 1966, Tsouras' work is both unique and timely. Highly recommended for the professional researcher; recommended but a bit expensive for the casual student of military affairs

A unique perspective on China, from China
Most Western perspectives on China fall into two (equally wrong)camps: the celebrations of the emergence of a new economic superpower reminiscent of William Gibson on 1980s Japan or the typical right-wing paranoia of China as the new enemy. Western discourse on China's politicshas been narrowly defined by ingrained images of 1989, some dissident bloggers, and Falun Gong. Discourse on economy has equally been restricted, becoming mostly a numbers game for the foreign investor, with Chicken Littles such as Gordon Chang warning of collapse. Rarely do we consider the real interests of regular Chinese. It's anyone's guess as to what the aspirations were of the man standing in front of the tank in Tiananmen, but most assume he was fighting for "reform" against the monolithic power of the party-state. To Americans, that reform can only mean one thing. But rather than assume this man risked his life for the freedom to eat Big Macs, why not hear from one of the actual participants and find out what "reform" means in China?

Wang Hui teaches at Tsinghua Univ. and is editor of the monthly journal "Dushu". He has become the unofficial leader of an intellectual circle his critics labeled the "New Left" (perjorative in associating Wang with Maoism). In this collection of his landmark essays on contemporary China, Wang exposes the domination of neoliberal and Fukuyama end of history ideologies and assumptions upon China's internal discourse. According to Wang, post-Mao China has seen many problems, but these aren't exclusively the problems of a state hindering the forward march of market reforms. Rather, they are the product of these so-called reforms. The neoliberals in China are not working against, but working within the party structure, becoming a new exploitative class and capitalizing on privatization through avenues legal and illegal. Human rights abuses in China are not only the oppression of dissidents, but the regular people just trying to survive in the jungle of market fundamentalism. While some have taken notice to labor issues, few have done it justice. Social discontent seems unlikely to spark revolution anytime soon, but the plight of workers and peasants deserves more attention. Wang looks at these problems emerging as a result of Dengism. Wang Hui is one of those few who have examined this story forgotten in the new economic superpower-new enemy debates in America. Wang argues that this discontent is struggling to articulate some sort of agenda and it made such an attempt in 1989, with the results of the crackdown being a renewed determination by the Dengists not simply to permit, but force capitalism on China with the use of state violence. On this, China's neoliberals are silent.

Wang Hui offers a radical third view on China from the perspective of an insider. In writing, he indicts both a party that has failed to live up to its own ideals of social justice and equality and the so-called critics of the party who benefit from its domestic gunboat capitalism. Wang reminds us that the students, as well as other less visible social groups, didn't just sing the Beatles in '89 (with some in the world hoping they'd take the lyrics of "Revolution" to heart and embrace the post-revolution McWorld), they also sang the Internationale. Those interested in such interpretations of contemporary China may also enjoy Streetlife China by Michael Dutton.

Inspired Reading
While reading "Revolution" I had a conversation with a freind, Linda, and she just purchased "The Coaching Revolution" on-line. I told Linda, I read through half of Logan and King (finishing up the excellent Core Values section), and said "You gotta look at getting this book..." Reading Logan and King is different experientially-- being that I'm reading some of what I have heard in conversations with John King. The book is an easy and quick read.

I'm reading Logan and King... and don't read books. I read text books and periodicals. I like Shakespeare and Eliot-- very prolific and also VERY dead.

Love the book. And it was particularly inspiring. Today I put my name in for a Function Manager position-- one that I am likely to be considered for, and also for a lead position in another project entirely. Thank you.

A Wonderful Review of Christian Spirituality
This book was such an uplifting work. Christians of all denominations, and non-Christians too, will find this to be a spiritually rewarding work. It caused me to honestly reflect on so many issues, and made me realize that the struggles we sometimes face are not necessarily unique - or unconquerable. The book is well written, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny (i.e., "peanut head") and very honest. The author shares himself without aires or the "holier than thou" pretenses that sometimes accompany religious writings. It was definately worth the purchase, and I'm happy to have stumbled upon it.

Confessions of a Mail Order Bride: American Life Through Thai Eyes
Published in Paperback by New Horizon Press (May, 2000)
Author: Wanwadee Larsen
Amazon base price: $18.95
Collectible price: $55.25
Average review score:

Very nice book, romantic, and even a surprise ending!
The book is perfect for anyone interested in both Thai culture and what seems to be an objective view of the American way of life. This is not a racy scandalous book if that is what you are looking for. Wanwadee is a conservative Thai who marries a rather typical American man. What an adventure to follow her thoughts as she is confronted with this strange country with its modern culture. I frankly could not put the book down.
The cover is a little misleading as is the title except that she really was a "mail order bride". If you are interested in Thai culture and a bit of romance then you will like the book. The side benefit is we American's get to blush a little when we see ourselves as others see us
