Definitive study of major figure in American church history
This extaordinary, well-written biography of Boniface Wimmer, OSB, the Bavarian founder of the American Benedictine Order, is well worth reading not only for its intimate portrait of one of American church history's most fascinating characters, but also for its thorough and insightful scholarship. The author traces the early history (1846-1887) of the Benedictines in the United States, whose work carried them from Pennsylvania to Minnesota, Kansas, New Jersey, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Illinois and other states. The book provides a narrative that will appeal to the general reader as well as the specialist.

It also surveys the wide variety of law: antitrust, criminal justice, family law, torts, consumer protection, and commercial law, and explores the relationship between law and society.'

Religion and the Government
Not a student of religion or constitutional law, I approached this book with trepidation. I was pleasantly surprised to find, however, that it serves as a valuable and truly interesting introduction to an important subject. The Mormon, Native American, and Jehovah's witness communities have confronted the government with the fundamental issue of free exercise. The lessons we learn from Mazur's careful analyses are invaluable. They are history lessons that show us the limitations of the Constitution, but also show the author's great respect for it as a potential source of salvation for America.

Approximate Distributions of Order Statistics: With Applications to Nonparametric Statistics (Springer Series in Statistics)
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (May, 1989)
Author: R. -D Reiss
Amazon base price: $128.00
Used price: $73.03
Average review score:

asymptotic theory of order statistics with applications
Reiss systematically develops the distribution theory for order statistics. For intermediate order statistics a central limit theorem applies and for the very extreme order statistics extreme value limit distributions apply. This theory and its application to nonparametric statistics is also covered in the book "Order Statistics" by David and "The Asymptotic Theory of Extreme Order Statistics" by Galambos. Reiss departs from these books by providing a complete and rigorous treatment of the most recent research including the bootstrap.

Chapter 0 is a good introduction that puts everything in the proper context. The book was published in 1989 and the theory continues to develop. Reiss and others have published texts in the 1990s that further develop the theory and applications of extreme values.

Archbishop Lefebvre and the Vatican, 1987-1988

The Documented Evidence
In this book, you will find all the documented evidence that Archbishop Lefebvre had been deceived by the Vatican apparatus and that the Archbishop tried his best to maintain good relations with the Vatican while, at the same time, doing his duties as a Bishop.

Throughout these documents and letters, it will become evident that the Vatican had no intention of ever letting Archbishop Lefevre consecrate bishops, for they continued to make promises to Archbishop Lefebvre, only to renege later, without offering any reason.

The letters and documents written by Archbishop Lefebvre PROVE that he was a valiant defender of the Catholic Faith and that he loved the Catholic Church and would do anything to continue to feed his flock. Anyone who is interested in the documented evidence of the negotiations needs to get this book.

Everyone Should Own This Book!
If you are told to "get your affairs in order", it makes you think you are approaching your final days on earth and you better get your legal and financial information together so your loved ones won't have to after your passing. Well, if you are faced with that unfortunate situation, this book would definitely be what you need. The title however, unfairly limits this books ability to appeal to the masses... and the masses should definitely have this book!

This book is for everyone... old or young, healthy or unhealthy, rich or poor. It is written in an easy to follow checklist format and even has the checklists duplicated and perforated in the back of the book for your imediate hands-on use. Each chapter makes you think long and hard about finances, insurance, retirement plans, legal issues and estate planning, credit and credit history, and taxes.

If you are not an organized person, it gives you a great system for compiling and keeping your records accessible and up to date. If you are an organized person, you will LOVE this book, because it is so thorough and systematic that you will be anxious to impliment those ideas you may not have thought of.

For instance, if your purse or wallet was stolen or misplaced, would you be able to instantly list it's typical contents and information associated with it's contents? Imagine having a list containing account numbers and customer service numbers for each credit card, library card, identification card, license, insurance card, etc., you typically carry. What might take months to even realize you no longer have, could now be replaced immediately with this system. This book is loaded with ideas like this... things you just don't think about until you REALLY NEED the information and then it might be too late or much more difficult to obtain.

This book gives you back CONTROL of your life. Applying it's system will make you better prepared for any of life's glitches, big or small. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to impliment this easy to follow plan!

That Deep Benedictine Well
Over the past 16 years, I've become personally involved with Benedictine spirituality through regular retreats to the monastic cloister. Kardong's book has given me the historical perspective and linguistic insight into that deep well, "The Rule of St. Benedict", the life source of Benedictine monasticism. Through his scholarly exegesis of "The Rule", I've gained understanding of this way of life, and thus have better lived my own life and faith. I have referred again and again to "Benedict's Rule: A Translation and Commentary" in the writing of my own commentary on "The Rule" for parents, "The Family Cloister: Benedictine Wisdom for the Home". I am currently working on a companion volume, "The Family Cloister Workbook: 52 Benedictine Activities for the Home", and have continually opened the pages of Kardong's book to better understand certain chapters and phrases in "The Rule". Besides the monks themselves who daily live the Rule, Kardong's commentary is one of the most complete expositions of Benedict's Rule I've found.
