The best book for dog owners hands down
"Two books in one" may sound too good to be true, but that's what you get with Howard Weinstein and Mail Order Annie in "Puppy Kisses are Good for the Soul". The first part of "Puppy Kisses" shows you what a wonderful relationship you can -- and should -- have with your dog through Howard's own personal experience with his Corgi Annie, while the second part tells you how to achieve it with your own dog. The book is a pleasure to read, being both insightful and humorous, and it is filled with practical, must-have advice for surviving a new dog or improving your relationship with your current one. "Puppy Kisses are Good for the Soul" is the best book for dog owners that my wife and I have ever read. In fact, the first "book" describing Howard's life with Annie qualifies as one of the best we've read period. If there is one book that dog owners and lovers should own, "Puppy Kisses" is it.

Simply put, pure pleasure!
I'm an avid reader of mysteries and non-fiction political and historical books but "Puppy Kisses", a huge departure from my usual choices, is easily my favorite book! I bought this book as we were waiting to adopt our own Corgi. It made the anticipation of her arrival that much more fun. Annie's antics are hilarious and the love Mr. Weinstein feels for her is as large and obvious as a pair of Corgi ears! You will laugh and you will cry - probably harder than you can imagine. Most of all you will be amazed by this incredibly intelligent and savy breed of dog. Corgis are truly unique and have to be one of the funniest dogs you will ever encounter and Mr. Weinstein has captured the essence of the Corgi - and no doubt especially the essence of his "Annie". I have recommended this book to friends and family - dog lovers and non dog lovers alike and all just love it. If you are looking for a thorougly enjoyable read that leaves your heart and soul warm and fuzzy, this is the book. For those of you especially who have loved a pet as if he or she came from your own heart, you will understand the connection between Mr. Weinstein and Annie and probably never read a more lovely tribute. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Corgis Corgis Corgis
Puppy Kisses has it all. Plenty of pictures, plenty of practical helps, plenty of good advice on choosing a puppy and learning to live with him. Excellent training lessons, with the why and why nots. Vet care information, user friendly, a fantastic handbook for raising a pup. And then there's the wonderful story of Mail Order Annie, how she came to live with Howard, a man who had never had a dog before, (except for the Beagle/basset puppy he had for one week), and how he was taught by Annie how to be the best friend a Corgi ever had.

No Greater Love

If No Greater Love doesn't soften your heart, nothing will. Rather than proselytizing, Mother Teresa gives simple encouragement to love and give and sacrifice. The anecdotes she tells--of the woman who calls her crippled son "Teacher of Love," or the child who prefers to live with her mother under a tree to living in the relative comfort of Mother Teresa's home--evoke a bittersweet tenderness in the reader, a feeling that Mother Teresa is correct in saying that we must conquer the world not with bombs but with love.

NO GREATER LOVE has been a TREMENDOUS help to me.
For the past several months I have been working with a man who committed some sexual crimes against his STEP daughters. He faced up to 350 years in prison. Last Tuesday, January 13,1998 he committed suicide at 6:00am. I had spoken with him on the phone at midnight 6 hours earlier, and his Caller ID showed I was the last call into his house. I DESPERATELY needed "counseling" as I have feelings of guilt (I could have somehow done more) etc. My Veterans Administration Psychiatrist in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA spoke with me about 1 hour and then recommended I read NO GREATER LOVE by Mother Teresa. At first I was a bit reluctant, because as a Protestant I "pre-judged" the book would be for Catholics. MAN WAS I WRONG!! This is absolutely THE BEST book, besides the HOLY BIBLE I have EVER read. Mother Teresa puts it "where the rubber meets the road" so to speak. It has been the GREATEST "self-help" book I have ever seen, if you really want to deepen your spiritual life. It DOESN'T focus on "religion" but rather focuses on JESUS CHRIST. If you haven't read the book, borrow it from your public library. After you have started it, you will want to order it from AMAZON BOOKS at http://www.amazon.com. I have checked with MANY booksellers, both locally and on "the web" and Amazon has the very best price. THIS BOOK IS AN ETERNAL INVESTMENT. TAKE TIME TO STUDY IT AND YOU WILL BE MUCH RICHER IN YOUR SPIRITUAL LIFE. Who knows, this book MAY have SAVED MY LIFE, as I was very, VERY despondent, and had serious thoughts of suicide myself. I give it a 10+ rating. I would also welcome any help/advice from anyone who has faced similar circumstances where a close friend committed suicide, and how YOU have dealt with it. Thank You. Don Ginter

Incredibly Inspiring
The title of this review says it all. My husband and I both enjoyed reading it, learning that even Mother Teresa faced challenges and also hearing the advice she offered to others. This is a book I read some time ago, then picked up again this year, and I was amazed at how much I got out of it on a re-read. Some of her words just stick in your mind and come back to inspire and uplift you (me anyway) on challenging days. I recommend this book to anyone, especially anyone who feels they want more of God in their own life.

A true Saint
Reading this book brought tears to my eyes just based on the sheer love for mankind this woman radiates. Besides being a touching account of what her day to day life was like of being of service for the sick and poor of the world, it is a great book of guidance and wisdom from a Saint who really followed the path of Christ from moment to moment every day of her life. One of the best reads ever as a source of Spiritual guidance and wisdom.

The Voices of the Saints : A Year of Readings

The Voices of the Saints: A Year of Readings by Bert Ghezzi begins with an epigraph drawn from the writings of St. Philip Neri: "The best preparation for prayer is to read the lives of the saints, not from mere curiosity, but quietly and with recollection a little at a time. And to pause whenever you feel your heart touched with devotion." Ghezzi's devotional has a fluid structure that will nourish any aspect of a reader's prayer life. Scores of short profiles of the saints (including familiar characters such as St. Peter and obscure saints such as Pelagia the Penitent) are deftly cross-referenced and indexed so that readers may pursue topical interests ("Angels," "Doubt," "Forgiveness," "Avant-Garde Saints") or explore the personal and historical connections among the saints. The readings are also numbered 1 through 365, for readers who prefer the discipline of a daily devotional (in this regard, The Voices of the Saints follows closely but not exhaustively the feast days of the Catholic liturgical calendar). Ghezzi's brief lives of the saints are complemented by well-chosen prayers and meditations drawn from the saints' writings. This book is a fine preparation for prayer, offering much to give the faithful reader pause.

Voices of the Saints is a winner!
Bert Ghezzi makes saints interesting. He introduces us to 365 saintly men and women as if they were old friends of his that he wants us to meet. He not only writes about saints with clarity and flashes of humor, he also allows them to speak to us in their own words. Various indexes and cross reference systems make his book even more reader friendly. Voices of the Saints is a marvelous achievement, and I expect that it will be THE book on saints for many years to come.

No more boring saints!
With gentle wit and solid scholarship, Bert Ghezzi presents 365 of his favorite "friends" whose lives and teachings are still relevant to us today. The two-page-per-saint format offers enough information to give us a personal glimpse into the lives of these holy men and women. And the author offers several ways to read the book -- straight through, chronologically (according to when the saint lived), or according to feast days. Keys at the bottom of the page indicate where readers should turn next. Worth every penny of the cover price!

Thank you for writing such a wonderful book
Every time I open this book I learn about someone new. If I may quote Saint Valerian. "If you desire to see God," he said, "seek out the beggar, receive the pilgrim, visit the sick, hasten to the prison." This is just one of the many great quotes in the book. I have recommended this book to my friends. It is hands down one of the best books I've ever read. Thank You Mr. Ghezzi for this wonderful book.

St. Therese of Lisieux, who died unknown in a Carmelite convent at the age of 24, became one of the most influential women in the world after her autobiography (The Story of a Soul) was posthumously published in 1898. Mother Teresa of Calcutta took her name from Therese; Edith Piaf kept Therese's picture on her night table; in 1997, Pope John Paul II made her a Doctor of the Church-- only the third woman to receive this distinction. Her autobiography describes a spiritual life full of everyday revelations--she saw God in jam sandwiches, pretty hats, and beautiful flowers. Maurice and Therese: The Story of a Love shows how her commonplace spirituality ministered to an aimless young priest unsure of his vocation and unstable in his devotion. Maurice Belliere wrote to Therese's Mother Prioress to ask that a nun pray for him, Therese was assigned to the task, and their 21 letters (edited and with commentary by Patrick Traherne) illustrate the young woman's extraordinary ability to love. She wasn't deeply familiar with Maurice, and she didn't agree with him on lots of things, but she was naturally inclined to have faith in him--a necessary aspect of love, and one that deserves attention. --Michael Joseph Gross

An exquisite memoir of Therese's friendship with Maurice
I am delighted to see the correspondence between Maurice and Therese, which I have appreciated for many years in Therese's letters, so beautifully interpreted here. Rich in insights in Therese's love for her "dear little brother," to whom she wrote, "I see how much your soul is sister to mine . . . "; in insight into her missionary consciousness, her love for the priesthood, her acute compassion for humanity, her extraordinary availability to souls, her theology. Bishop Ahern's luminous appreciation of Therese and Maurice lights the book up. Therese ended her correspondence with these words written on the back of holy picture, "last souvenir of a soul, sister of your own soul," and this book is truly that.

The Humanity of a Saint
Never have I read a book on a saint that was more revealing than this. The correspondence between this beloved Saint and a wonderfully ordinary priest washes away the mystique of St. Therese. What it reveals is a very human woman who through the love of Jesus helps another human being find the love God wants us to share in. It is very intense and emotional. You will find it difficult to put down and easy to re-read.

A most beautiful book about Little Therese of Lisieux
if you admire and hold lots of devotion for St. Therese of Lisieux as I have for so long now- she always said she was Little Therese. However in this book the most moving charisma of her love and personality are seen in a "big" way regarding her friendship with Maurice. We see a saint so full of love and compassion for his shortcomings and never does she once in this book show anything but encouragement to Maurice. There are many lessons to be learned in reflecting on this book . One of the most significant things I feel is our should be support to our priests, bishops and clergy in the universal catholic church. As Maurice radiates in this book as an aspiring semanarian our clergy does have up's and down's also. May we all love our clergy as St. Therese did, does and symbolizes her special love for the priests, and bishops. A most marvelous book. As the late John Cardinal O'Connor said in his review to Ahern's book " We see Therese now more as a woman and we are fascinated. :)

What makes this book so useful?
-- Thorough research. Through her articles about Sears mail-order homes for "Old House Journal" and now with this book the author shares her findings as well as her personal insights.

-- Reprints of rare catalog pages. As well as pictures of six homes which were not mentioned in other books, the author also reprints pages from original catalogs about construction details and varying floorplans.

-- Sincere human interest. The book retells the personal stories of how people saved money in order to finance their Dream mail-order homes. And how the contemporary planners surveyed builders and researched the way owners used their homes in order to improve the architectural plans.

-- Dispels myths. There have been several myths circulating on how to identify a Sears mail-order house. The author dispels these myths and replaces them with useful and practical advise on how to Positively identify a home ordered from a Sears catalog.

-- Shows you how to Positively Identify a Sears home. Whether you are a 'Sears Spotter' or just want to discover whether a specific house was built from a Sears pre-cut kit, the author offers definative ways to discover and document that infomation.

THE BOOK TO READ FOR KNOWLEDGE ON SEARS HOMES
This book is amazing. If you love Sears Catalog Homes, you will love this one. I have found more information in the authors books about Sears Catalog Homes than from any other sources. It covers everything from what a Sears Catalog Home is to the missing sears homes. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I do!

Renewed Interest
I just finished reading The Houses That Sears Built. I was unable to put it down. I grew up in a Sears house, but I did not know anything about them until I read this book. It is obvious that the author did her homework while researching the subject.

Lest We Forget Display Copy with Orders of 5 Copies or More
Published in Hardcover by Crown (07 October, 1997)
Author: Velma Maia Thomas
Amazon base price: $13.00
Used price: $107.05
Velma Maia Thomas, the developer of the Black Holocaust Exhibit, has written a passionate yet brief account of slavery in America. Lest We Forget is packaged to mimic a multimedia exhibit: pages fold out, pop up, and often contain three-dimensional objects, such as an envelope that opens to reveal a facsimile of a receipt for a slave named Francis. The production techniques may make Lest We Forget look like a children's book, but the text offers a serious, moving depiction of how slaves lived before emancipation.

A must have to pass from one generation to the next.
My daughter enjoys reading and interacting with the book. It is a must have for all races and ethnic groups. It's EVERYONE'S history, not just African-American history. I have shared the book with many people of all races and they have enjoyed and bought the book.

LEST WE FORGET!!!
This book gives dimensional insight to those not only wanting to read about the horrific history of slavery, but also, have pieces of history, that are tangible, to lift from the pages and look at. It is a good book to add to a collection of other books about a period in African American, and American history.
I also wanted to comment on reviewers Alice, who said the book was "cute," and Karen, who liked to "peek" at the items in the book. The book gives the reader a glimps about slavery and the atrocities that African Amercian people suffered in this country during that time period, and still do because of it. There is definitely nothing cute, or delightful to peek at, about this book, but you can learn from it.

The next best thing to being there
Ms. Thomas should be commended for bringing to life the days of the lives of people who were condenmed for being Black. I was also amazed about the research she acquired -- especially the 3D mementos. So many people have heard about these articles, but without attending a museum, have never seen them. Many other people have also heard about them, but don't take them serious, especially if it did not alter their lives in any way. For those of us who do take that time in history seriously, thank you, Ms. Thomas, for showing us and bringing us closer to what our ancestors endured.

Advertising Secrets of the Written Word: The Ultimate Resource on How to Write Powerful Advertising Copy from One of America's Top Copywriters and Mail Order Entrepreneurs
Published in Hardcover by Delstar Pub (01 June, 1998)
Authors: Joseph Sugarman and Dick Hafer
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

A masterwork of deceptive simplicity
Great copy looks so easy -- so simple, so effortless, so "ordinary." There are those who can take the process of writing it and make that process look complicated. And then there's Joe Sugarman.

This is one of the two books I recommend for further study in my home-study "Money-Making Copywriting Course." Why? Because Joe cuts through all of the needless and cumbersome detail so many teachers of copywriting instill in their lessons. He makes the information accessible and entertaining to learn. And he's a super-successful real-world practioner, as well as a very skilled and effective teacher.

A novice might think that because this book does not refer to Internet marketing or the latest trends in print and direct mail advertising, it is out of date. That is a well-intentioned but misguided criticism. Of course very few people know how to market effectively (and close sales) on the Internet. Since I have done this successfully (I've created Web sites that made lots of money, by themselves) and since I spent a year as the editor of a newsletter tracking who was successful marketing online and who wasn't (almost everyone wasn't), I can say with some authority that there are very few people who can market effectively online.

But know this about Joe Sugarman. If he ever chose to do online marketing, he would make a fortune -- just as he has done before in other ventures. Why? Because there are certain principles of human nature, and of selling with the written word, that have not yet changed. And he is a world-class expert in conveying those principles to novices and experts alike.

The technological and situational landscape may make it look like we live in a very different world, but trust me -- as someone who got a 2% response with direct mail at the height of the anthrax scare in the fall of 2001 -- the world we live in now is pretty much the same as the world we have always lived in.

At least as it pertains to writing effective advertising copy.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. You'll learn tons, and -- best of all -- you'll be able to make some very good money with what you learned.

One of the top 20 books on Advertising Copy.
I own $4,200 worth of Books and courses on Advertising and this book is on my list of top 20 must read. A lot of valuable insights not covered by others! Helps you avoid some of the biggest and most common mistakes in writing ads and sales letters that almost guarantee a Bomb. Covers emotions and reasons why people buy and don't buy. This book is worth $250.00 or more. It's a virtual course. Sugarman has sold hundreds of millions of dollars worth of products and knows what he is talking about. Sugarman makes almost nothing off teaching others what he knows. I think he teaches because he enjoys it and not to make money. His money has come through selling products in space ads and television, and not from teaching others how to sell through space ads or television. A lot of so called experts make there money teaching others how to make money teaching others how to make money. Sugarman made his millions selling products to the public! Get this book! Its fun to read and its Great!

If You Could Have Only One Book on Copywriting, This is it!
On a scale of 1 to 10, this book is a 20. Truly the ultimate course on copywriting. My library is filled with books on how to write advertising copy. My shelves brim with books by Gary Halbert, Jay Abraham, John Carlton, John Caples, Brian Keith Voiles, Michael Masterson, and many other outstanding, top-notch copywriters. Joe Sugarman's Advertising Secrets of the Written Word is my all-time favorite. The absolute best book on the subject, period.

I unexpectedly enjoyed it!
I expected this parody book to make me laugh, which it did, but I never expected it to make me think. Laughter and thinking, what's better than that. This book is so much more than a parody!

One of the funniest books I have ever seen.
J Crewd, by Justin Racz is, without a doubt, one of the funniest books I have ever laid eyes on. Every detail is intentional, each time I look at it I find something new, and HILARIOUS. It doesn't just poke fun at a the catalog, but at the entire fashion industry. I gave it to some friends as a gift, and they all loved it too. This book is GREAT!

Pure Unadulterated Genius
A literary masterpiece has been bestowed upon us and it's purveyor is Justin Racz. This tearful, joyous, gripping satirical examination of society's infatuation, nay addiction to catalogue shopping is an insightful, sociological commentary on our cultural trend towards an isolationist existence. I say bravo Mr. Racz on this risqué, cutting edge exposé serving as your first venture into the kingdom of authorship. The concrete walls that have imprisoned the literary community in the dark cell of imperturbable depravity come crumbling down with the passionate prose that flow effortlessly from the "stylo" of Racz. The precedent has been set and the bar has been raised. Mr. Racz comes roaring into the printed medium with a fury we have not seen since King or Grisham. The only comparable feat will be topping this tour-de-force in his next installment.

Winning Without Intimidation; A must have guide for life
I have read the book by Bob Burg and found it to be the most helpful tool for positive living. This is a must for dealing with people in today's world. It is easily read and explains why the techniques are necessary and gives clear examples of how they can be used in your everyday life. I attended a conference, where Bob Burg did an excellent presentation, at The Grand Plaza Hotel, Grand Rapids MI. He personifies his book.

Easy and practical guide to the lost art of pos. persuasion.
If you're tired of hassling with uncooperative people in your life, READ THIS BOOK! Easy to read and practical, this book explains the lost art of "positive persuasion" and how it can make daily communication with service people, business associates, friends, enemies and even LOVED ONES more effective and more fun. Using amusing anecdotes you can relate to, the author shows how we can avoid the stress of negative no-win confrontations and get, as he puts it "what you want, when you want it, and from whom you want it." He believes we can create a win/win situation every time we face a brick wall of resistance or just a disagreeable human, if we learn and practice his simple tips. Instead of manipulation, the rules of pos. persuasion consider the egos and effects on all parties, giving the keys to a satisfying outcome for everybody. No argueing, no threats, no sweat! Burg combines good manners and good sense with a few neat tricks and tips to! remind us of our often-lost humanity, and the easy things we can do in our daily life to make it less stressful, more productive, and much more fun.

One of the MOST helpful books I've read!
"Winning Without Intimidation"
was one of the most helpful and
encouraging books I've ever read.

I felt as though I was right there
with Bob as he interacted with
people in such a wonderfully
non-intimidating way and I
really learned a great deal
from this little book!!!

I would give anything to be a
fly on Bob's lapel as he interacts
with the people he meets on a
daily basis!!!

When I returned from a recent
vacation I had a phone conference
with one of my business partners who
informed me of a small problem
she had with one of the leads
companies we've been using
and recommending to our team
members.

So I took what I learned from
Bob's book and wrote a letter
to the owner and I got a response
back within about an hour that
he would replace the leads AND
will make sure that glitch is
taken care of asap so it doesn't
happen to others!

So I've already had a chance
to put into practice what I
learned from Bob's book!

Missing text????
I have been enjoying The Narrated Bible for a year and a half now and have specifically enjoyed the chronological order. However, just recently, I was reading a portion in the Gospels (page 1375) that had a portion of Mathew 8::14-15, 16-17. This happens to be a favorite portion of scripture, so I was excited to read it, however I noticed that it didn't have verse 17 (which is a quote from Isaiah 55) in it. I thought that was rather strange, so I looked up Mathew 8:17 in the index (page 1712) in the back of the Bible. It indicated that this particular verse should be found on page 1385. So I flipped over to 1385, and there isn't a single scripture on that page from chapter 8, its all from chapter 7.

So basically, this single scripture (Mathew 8:17) does not appear in this Bible. It makes me wonder what other scriptures are missing. I will continue to use this Bible, but I will always be wondering what is being left out.

Though you should know before you pick one up.

One of a kind Bible - in chronological order!
This Bible is wonderful for putting events into historical context. While it should not be the only Bible you read, or the Bible you take to church with you, this is unique and can help you GREATLY in understanding the order of events in the life of God's people.

The 4 gospels are put into one long story called "Life of Jesus". This is a HUGE help! You can so much more easily take in all that the Bible tells us about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! In the Old Testament, the author combines the events of Samuel, the Kings and the Chronicles - most layment are confused by these books and if you're reading them in order, you'll find yourself saying "Didn't we cover this already?". Having it all put together in one story is so helpful!

F. LaGard Smith includes some "devotional commentary", which is clearly marks as such. He also divides The Narrated Bible into daily readings for those wanting to read this through in a year. The sun icon tells you you've reached the end of that day's reading. If you want this same text to be divided up by date (like the One Year Bible), you can get "The Daily Bible".

You will find the prophecies of Isaiah and Jeremiah put into their historical context - I believe that your faith will be enriched and your understanding improved by this wonderful book!

Oh, something important to mention is that you can always easily find exactly what verse you're reading. The reference is in the margin, and in the case of the Gospels, all references to that event are noted, with reference used by the wording of the passage is highlighted in bold.

There is also a complete index, so you can quickly find any verse in the Bible. So you needn't worry about not knowing what book of the Bible you're reading.

Amazon has a GREAT price on this Bible! Take a "look inside" to see some of the pages, and order it today!

The Narrated Bible Makes Great Gifts
We have purchased several copies of this book over the years. I love it. I would like to make a request. Please make it available on tape/CD for people who cannot see to read, or are not avid readers, or who travel a lot and would be able to make good use of their time by listening to it. I have not seen it anywhere it large or giant print. That would also be great. Thank you.
