This collection of fun and easy to read poems is perfect for children who are beginning readers. The color illustrations and the great poems are very engaging. My 5 year old son and his entire pre-kindergarten class -- thoroughly enjoyed it! They loved the funny lines about the animals -- and the kids were truly inspired to learn to read! The kids who already can read -- totally loved this book because they could really understand and enjoy the humor. Also -- as any parent knows -- kids love rhymes and this book is full of witty and silly ones!

After Image is much more than a marketing and branding education. Grant communicates very powerfully the change in structure and thinking that is necessary for individuals and for us as whole to succeed in the 21st Century. His explaination of moving from a work/status ethic to a continuous learning/collaborative/networking ethic provides a structure for individuals, organizations and countries to base their readiness for the real work of the 21st Century.

After Image, creative insight into next generation branding.

This book, along with Smither's CHRONICLES OF THE BIG BEND, are MUST READS for the serious Chisos Mountains area hiker. Along with the historical/geological/botanical/zoological everything elseical information, Maxwell includes a packet of foldout maps. The maps alone are worth the price of the book. Don't worry about the publication dates of the above books, nature works on a time-scale that makes these books timeless to the human reader. Most of the more recent publications can't come close to adding anything new to this information.

An broad overview of the Big Bend region

This book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to the Big Bend region. Even those who have experienced the beauty of the region and its people will find this book a handy reference. The author is a former superintendent of Big Bend National Park. As described in the title, the book covers the geology of Big Bend (including an excellent introduction to geological processes for the uninitiated like myself), the history of Big Bend (including the histories of place names and other local legends), and an overview of local vegetation and the native uses of the vegetation by the old curanderos. Included throughout the book are 117 illustrations and black and white photographs. Many of the photographs offer a unique glimpse into the lives of those who settled this rugged country. Also included with the book are five separately printed illustrations, including a 360-degree panorama of The Basin (obviously from days long ago - notice the lack of trees!), and several geological maps. This is definitely the favorite book in my Big Bend library!

This is a wonderful book for the pre-teenager. I read it more than 40 years ago and just recently reread it with my 10 year old neice. She enjoyed it as much as I had all those many years ago. Throughout the book we share Bowser's adventures, both happy & sad and learn a few of life's lessons along the way. Although never overly sentimental, the book does touch your heart. In an overly mechanized & many times rushed world, this book is a refreshing look back to simpler yet still oh so important values.

There are a lot of animal books out there. There are a lot of zoo books out there. There are very few of said books that do it with this kind of ingenuity. The first time you read the lines "Flamingos know they are strange and beautiful and play at symmetry" to your 3 year old, you know you have stumbled on to a rare gem.

Will they know what symmetry is? Probably not, but you do -- and that is what is so great about this simple book. Everyone gets to enjoy the book, on whatever level they can appreciate it for.

Tough Guy goes down swinging

Review Date: 2006-01-16

In a previous Stephen Leather thriller, THE LONG SHOT, ex-SAS Sergeant Mike Cramer is instrumental in foiling an assassination plot against the U.S. President and the British Prime Minister. Along the way, he's horrifically tortured by a fiendish, female, IRA terrorist in a manner that would have broken lesser literary and cinematic tough guys. But Cramer prevails.

Here, in THE DOUBLE TAP, Cramer is dying of stomach cancer. Wishing to go out fighting, he volunteers to act as the bait to entrap and liquidate a faceless international hit man that attracts the attention of the SAS after he kills a friend of the Prime Minister, who demands action. Thus, Mike assumes the identity of a reclusive millionaire businessman known to be on the assassin's short hit list. With the help of SAS trainers, Cramer practices quick-draw techniques in the hope that he can swiftly out-gun the Bad Guy, who specializes in double taps, i.e., a first shot to the head and a second to the chest close-up with a hand gun. Unknown to Cramer and the SAS, however, the former has another predator on his track, IRA soldier Dermott Lynch, out to avenge the execution of his wife, an IRA bomber, years before during an SAS raid on an IRA safe house in which Sergeant Cramer participated. Who'll get to Mike first?

THE DOUBLE TAP is decidedly better than THE LONG SHOT. In the latter, Cramer shared hero duties with an FBI agent, and, consequently, readers' loyalties might understandably be divided. Moreover, the potential repercussions of THE LONG SHOT were more international than personal, and the plot as a whole consequently perhaps less engaging. Leather remedies both shortcomings here with a leaner and meaner plot while at the same time providing a clever end-game twist that fools Mike and his SAS controller.

It's a shame Leather thought it necessary terminate Cramer's career. One can only hope that he was buried with all due honors in the parallel universe of literary fiction.

Great read, the hunt for an assasin takes former SAS officer Mike Cramer around the world. The assassin has never failed and always kills the same way - two shots to the head, the double tap of the title. The only way Cramer can stop the killer is to take the next target's place. Gripping characters and a fast-paced style that makes the book difficult to put down. Leather isn't widely known in the US - but he deserves to be.

For nearly twenty years I have owned a discarded library copy of this book and it survived many "weedings" of my personal collection. Somehow I did not actuallly get around to reading it until recently. It proved to be a milestone experience and I regretted not reading it much earlier...perhaps I was not ready before? It is drastically changing my attitude to "life, the universe and everything"! Everyone should have the benefit of this supremely wise yet totally practical and down-to-earth philosophy. Whoever this John Pepper is (or perhaps was)he is a true sage with genuine insight in how we can live successfully in this "vale of tears"!

Everyone should read this book. I have read it for at least three times. The book advises on how we should look at suffering in this world with a more liberating perspective.

If you are not happy wherever you are, whatever you are doing, read this book. It will help much, I promise.

Rebecca tells it like it is!! No BS, no sugar-coating, no plastication! In these days of incredibly difficult and often sad ongoing family situational results, it is very gratifying to finally hear a voice of reality that is not only focused on saving relationships and families, but enhancing them to the point of continued growth and enrichment. Rebecca's experienced voice comes through loud and clear. I give a strong recommendation of this book for both the married that are happy, or that may be possibly struggling -or in more dire situations as well as those that are searching for the ultimate relationship. An injection of enthusiasm, posivitity, and excitement, along with a little adventure is an incredible medicine. Enjoy the journey!!
