WORLD MUST NOT TURN ITS BACK ON TORTURED, MURDERED AND HOMELESS PALESTINIANS AS JEWISH ATROCITIES AGAINST THEM GO ON AND ON....Review Date: 2008-09-28
I was tuned into this reading Jimmy Carters' "Palestine: Peace: Not Apartheid," and then read "The Israel Lobby," by Mearsheimer and Walt. There is a reason that these two books have been in the top 4 sellers for amazon for over 2! years now: Pure truth courageously written by true heroic scholars and gentlemen humanists.
Also read about Rachel Corrie, a young college student murdered by the Israelis in broad daylight. Remember and read Rachel Corrie[...]
A great book by a prominent lawyerReview Date: 2008-03-24
Mr. Shehadeh has been practicing law in Ramallah since 1978. In 1979, he co-founded the pioneering human rights organisation Al-Haq, the Palestinian affiliate of the International Commission of Jurists which he co-directed until 1991.
Mr. Shehadeh also wrote several books on the legal aspects of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian Territories including Occupiers Law (Institute of Palestine Studies, 1985 revised 1988) and From Occupation to Interim Accords (Kluwer, 1997).
His latest two published books were Strangers in the House (Penguin 2002), and When the Bulbul Stopped Singing (Profile 2004). The last was adapted to the theatre and performed in Edinburgh, Tehran and New York.
If anyone knows the facts and the truth, it is someone who lives on the land of Palestine and endures the harsh reality of life there (unlike the person who wrote a review of this book here on Amazon).
Like Mr. Shehadeh's other books, this is a book definitely worth reading.
an InventionReview Date: 2008-03-09
There's just one thing about that: There are no Palestinians.
It's a made up word. Israel was called Palestine for two thousand years.
Like "Wiccan," "Palestinian" sounds ancient, But is really a modern invention.
Before the Israelis won the land in the 1967 war,
Gaza was owned by Egypt, the West Bank was owned by Jordan,
And there were no "Palestinians."
As soon as the Jews took over and started growing
Oranges as big as basketballs, what do you know, say hello to the "Palestinians," weeping for their deep bond with their lost "land" and "nation."
So for the sake of honesty, let's not use the word "Palestinian"
anymore to describe these delightful folks, who dance for joy
at our deaths, until someone points out they're being taped.
Instead, let's call them what they are:
"Other Arabs Who Can't Accomplish Anything In Life
and Would Rather Wrap Themselves In The Seductive Melodrama Of Eternal Struggle And Death."
I know that's a bit unwieldy to expect to see on CNN.
How about this, then: "Adjacent Jew-Haters."
Okay, so the Adjacent Jew-Haters want their own country.
Oops, just one more thing. No, they don't.
They could've had their own country any time in the last thirtyyears,
Especially two years ago at Camp David.
But if you have your own country, you have to have traffic lights
and garbage trucks and Chambers of Commerce, and, worse,
you actually have to figure out some way to make a living.
That's no fun. No, they want what all the other Jew-Haters in the region want: Israel.
They also want a big pile of dead Jews, of course --
that's where the real fun is -- but mostly they want Israel.
Why? For one thing, trying to destroy Israel - or "The Zionist Entity"
As their textbooks call it --
For the last fifty years has allowed the rulers of Arab countries
to divert the attention of their own people
away from the fact that they're the blue-ribbon most illiterate,
poorest, and tribally backward on God's Earth, and if you've ever been around God's Earth . . . You know that's really saying something.
It makes me roll my eyes every time one of our pundits waxes poeticabout the great history and culture of the Muslim Midleast.
Unless I'm missing something, the Arabs haven't given anything to the World since Algebra, and, by the way, thanks a hell of a lot for that One.
Chew this around &spit it out: 500 million Arabs; 5 million Jews.
Think of all the Arab countries as a football field,
and Israel as a pack of matches sitting in the middle of it.
And now these same folks swear that, if Israel gives them
half of that pack of matches, everyone will be pals..
Really? Wow, what neat news. Hey, but what about the string of wars to obliterate the tiny country and the constant din
of rabid blood oaths to drive every Jew into the sea?
Oh, that? We were just kidding.
My friend Kevin Rooney made a gorgeous point! the other day:
Just reverse the Numbers. Imagine 500 million Jews and 5 million Arabs. I was stunned at the simple brilliance of it .
Can anyone picture the Jews strapping belts of razor blades
and dynamite to themselves? Of course not. Or marshaling every fiber and force at their disposal for generations
to drive a tiny Arab State< /B> into the sea? Nosense.
Or dancing for joy at the murder of innocents? Impossible.
Or spreading and believing horrible lies about the Arabs baking their Bread with the blood of children? Disgusting.
No, as you know, left to themselves in a world of peace,
The worst Jews would ever do to people is debate them to death.
However, in any big-picture strategy, there's always a danger
of losing moral weight. We've already lost some.
After September 11th, our president told us and the world he was going to root out all terrorists and the countries that supported them.Beautiful
.
Then the Israelis, after months and months of having the equivalent of an Oklahoma City every week (and then every day),
start to do the same thing we did, and we tell them to show restraint.
If America were being attacked with an Oklahoma City every day,
we would all very shortly be screaming for the administration
to just be done with it and kill everything south of the Mediterranean and east of the Jordan.
Please feel free to pass this along to your friends
Walk in peace! Be Happy! Have a wonderful life.

No Racism (latent or otherwise) In This Book (as claimed by previous comment)Review Date: 2009-01-02
"There is going to be a party.
Princess Lily and Princess Tulip set the table.
Princess Rose gets the band ready.
Princess Hyacinth makes a cake.
PRINCESS IRIS MAKES UP A GAME TO PLAY AT THE PARTY.
But where is Princess Buttercup?" (Caps are mine for emphasis, not in the book)
My book only shows one publication date (2001) and the wording given in Jill Roberta's review is NOT in my copy of the book. In fact, there is no racist-leaning wording (latent or blatant) or illustrations. In fact, I'm quite happy that there is at least one fairy who is not white (although with that many flower princesses there could have been more of other ethnicities).
Also, the book is sweet and my daughter loves princesses, so it is a good fit for her on an early reading level. The story also teaches fortitude and shows Princess Buttercup staying calm when she is in a difficult situation.

Princess Iris plays ball.
She does not like to work.
She likes to play."
Princess Iris is the only black fairy, and she is shown shooting a large pea through a spiderweb hoop -- an early introduction to latent racism for young children.

Excellent ReadReview Date: 2003-03-14
The reason why I selected McDonough's book over other books about Harriet Tubman was that it spoke of all aspects of history that occurred at that particular time.
As a child I had studied Nat Turner, Abraham Lincoln, and of course Harriet Tubman, but it was amazing how many historical events occurred that she was an active part of.
I feel that after reading this particular story that I have learned a great deal about an important icon in African American History, reading this book has enabled me to trace the beginnings of all beginnings. Harriet Tubman was truly a phenomenal women. She gave of herself again and again . . . By assisting others to freedom through The Underground Railroad, her service in the Union Army, and her many years of service as a nurse.
As I read this book to my class they emphasized that they could literally see the scenes as I was reading them. Some of the terminology was intense and I used appropriate wording to make it age-appropriate for my students.
Either way this is an excellent read for all -- and I hope to check out more books by this very informative author!

The Development of Trans-Jordan, 1929-1939Review Date: 2008-08-08
Abu Nowar began his career in the Arab Legion, rose to become a major-general, and then served as the Hashemite Kingdom's ambassador to London and briefly as its deputy prime minister. His flawed earlier works focused on the Jordanian role in Israel's war of independence and Jordan's own efforts to free itself from British tutelage.[1] His latest work is based on an Oxford University doctoral thesis and argues that Trans-Jordan was a distinct geographic entity (rather than an arbitrary creation of European diplomats) and that "Zionist and pro-Zionist British officials keenly endeavoured to remove him [King Abdullah I] from the country and annex it to Palestine."
The latter assertion reflects poorly not only on Abu Nowar's scholarship, but also on that of his Oxford tutors. Throughout his book, "Zionist and pro-Zionist British officials" are employed as useful straw men or foils against whom Abu Nowar can demonstrate Abdullah's independence and acumen. The problem is that Abu Nowar seldom names these bogeymen, and when he does, his labeling is inaccurate: Harry St. John Philby, for example, was a committed Arabist who subsequently became an advisor to the founder of Saudi Arabia. The founders of the State of Israel would be shocked to learn that he stood in their camp.
Nor would the masters whom Abu Nowar once served necessarily agree with his revisionism: Jordanian leaders tended to take a far more pragmatic approach to Zionism, especially given the challenges they faced from within the Arab world. His treatment of the 1936-39 Arab Revolt makes little attempt at academic objectivity: He neither mentions Arab massacres of Jews nor the incitement campaign of Muhammad Amin al-Husayni, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, whose strategy included outreach to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
The Development of Trans-Jordan disappoints in other ways. Analysis of Arab Legion activity is drawn exclusively from British documents rather than Jordanian sources. Discussion of political meetings within Jordanian society is slightly more useful, as Abu Nowar incorporates contemporaneous Arabic newspaper accounts not readily available elsewhere.
Overall, Abu Nowar's doctoral dissertation adds little to an understanding of Jordan's birth pangs and consolidation as a political entity--but it does demonstrate how far scholarship at Oxford University has declined.

A Horse Named SeabiscuitReview Date: 2005-12-20
Overglossed, even for young readers.Review Date: 2005-04-04
Now, I know this is a book for kids, and not kids who are proficient readers. Still, that doesn't excuse some of the omissions here (for example, the reason Seabiscuit lost his first Big Cap-- Red Pollard's blindness). Kids like drama just as much as adults. They could handle the blind-in-one-eye thing.
Still, Seabiscuit's career is a tough thing to compress into forty-eight pages. The Dubowskis did try, and to some extent, they succeeded. They managed to do so without getting into anything too technical, which is a credit, but I think it was that unwillingness to get into the technical aspects that caused some of the more glaring omissions.
It's my hope that this will encourage kids to look for more complete kids' books on Seabiscuit (Ralph Moody's classic Come On Seabiscuit!, for example) once they get old enough to handle the larger books. But this is a decent beginning. ***

Don't try this at homeReview Date: 2004-10-08
As I sat down to write this review, I realized that the author didn't give a name to his novel's hero. I've flipped back through the pages to ensure that I didn't miss something; I apparently didn't, so let's call him "Mac" because he's a Scotsman.
Mac, a co-partner of Scottish Corporate Advisors, is a financier with a grudge. His father had managed an investment trust, Scottish Commercial Overseas Trust, until it was hijacked by Ronnie Laing and and Alan Kyle, the former a vicious drug dealer and the latter a specialist in hostile corporate acquisitions. During the SCOT takeover, Mac's mother died in an auto accident, perhaps arranged by Laing as a warning to her husband. In any case, the day after losing control of his company, Mac's despondent father blew his own brains out with a shotgun. Mac wants revenge, and plans an intricate sting that will frame Laing and Kyle for the theft of a large cocaine shipment from the IRA, an outfit you don't want to annoy. To that end, Mac enlists the help of a high-end courtesan, a car thief, an ex-SAS mercenary, and a driver who once worked for Laing. But the best laid plans oft go awry, and by the time Mac is dumping bodies into a Highland loch, events have spun out of control. Don't try this at home.
This is only my third Leather thriller, with five more on the shelf to read. So far, the protagonists have been nominally law-abiding citizens forced by circumstance to the far side of the law. PAY OFF, at 240 paperbacked pages, is relatively short. While perhaps offering lo-carb plot and character development, this thriller met expectations for concept and action. However, as an otherwise honest Brit, Mac's knowledge of criminal activities, which allows him to set up the scam, seemed unseemingly comprehensive. I mean, I wouldn't know where to start. Perhaps Mac read too many crime novels.
The book suggests one authored early in Leather's writing career, and perhaps kept on the shelf until it was needed to meet a publisher's deadline. However, it's a good and quick read for a plane trip or day at the beach.
