Unbalanced Feelings
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-31
I would recommend this book to any teenager undergoing any type of change. This book helped me cope with my unbalanced feelings during my parent's divorce. One day I was able to bottle up all my anger, and act as if nothing had happened. At other times, I would just break down and cry. Ups&Downs helped me realize what I was doing and taught me how to prevent myself from doing so. Now I am able to face the facts and live my life the way it was before.

Well-written and slyly witty

I bought this book in college for a paper I never actually wrote, but I kept it because it was so engaging. Weiss writes about lesbians in film so well I'm rather suprised this book hasn't gotten more attention; it isn't a political screed or a narcolepsy-inducing thesis but simply a good book on an interesting subject. I haven't seen half the films mentioned herein but I'm dying to; she makes it THAT interesting.

the three authors have found an excellent way of trying to put into writing an intense experience in professional drama in west-africa, an experience which is way beyond the western concepts. It communicates in a very lifely way their scholarly preoccupations mixed with their human insights.

Extremely informative and interesting

Although I purchased this book for my children, I could not put it down.

I had never hear Maria Tallchief's story. We get a very balanced view of her life. It tells of the hardships she endured without overemphasizing them. It is a very honest book and does not hide what some might find to be the uncomfortable events of her life.

Yet, while the authors include hardships, they focus on her successes and how the various choices and people in her life had a part in helping her succeed. Her father was an alcoholic, but they portray him as a whole person. Her mother was very driven in her desire to see her daughters succeed, but the reader still has compassion for her.

I love how Maria remained friends with Balanchine after their divorce.

I admire how she did not let prejudice stop her from trying to build a bridge between the two cultures in which she lived.

Due to some of the content, you may want to read the book to your younger children. This way you can discuss some of the difficult events together. But there is no way the information is written in a rough or gratuitous manner. I highly recommend this book.

My 7 year old son could not put this book down! He read the entire book in one afternoon, and then was able to complete his biography project for school without any additional research. The book brought Amelia Earhart to life; it was comprehensive and interesting, with so many insights that I had never known before. There were also numerous sketches and maps which would keep a youngster engaged throughout the book. This book gets a resounding "WOW!" from us.
