Beautiful Book
First, I must say this is one of the best Christmas presents I have ever received.

The illustrations in this book are magnificent, and the words are beautiful. The book basically describes that anyone can be a kid at Christmastime as long as you believe.

I recommend this book to all fans of Mary Engelbreit's illustrations.

It was a wonderful book!!!!!!!!!!!
My name is Sarah Madjlesi and I am a Senior in High School in Corinth, MS. I love Mary Englebreit and I love this book. I love all of her work and I love collecting her stuff.

Belief is good for the spirit
Attractive gift book on the spirit of Christmas. Each set of facing pages contains a bit of verse and an accompaning picture dramatizing Ms. Engelbreit's belief that you are never too old to believe in Santa.

SS-GB : Nazi-occupied Britain, 1941

Deighton's best
"SS GB" is a thoroughly fascinating, absorbing, terrific novel--a first-rate murder mystery wrapped in a huge, wartime conspiracy, with a detailed, completely believable backdrop of Britain defeated and occupied by the Nazis. It is literally impossible to put this book down once you've started. The characters are unforgettable: cool but overwhelmed Detective Superintendent "Archer of the Yard," the sleek, frighteningly menacing SS Standartenfuhrer Huth, the double-edged General Kellermann, loyal Harry Woods, vivacious Barbara Barga--all come to life in a crackerjack spy plot executed on a global basis. Do not miss this book!

A startling, believable scenario that might have been.
SS-GB deals with life in Nazi-occupied Great Britain, about one year after the German Army successfully overruns the British Isles. I found it to be utterly believable, completely convincing. Churchill has been secretly executed by a German firing squad, and the King is imprisoned in the Tower of London under special SS guard. America considers the war to be over. And therein lies the tale. The end will rock you and sock you.

The book deals with one Detective Archer, a detective with Scotland Yard, which is itself under the command of a German police General. There is a murder to be solved, and as one might guess, there is more to the murder than meets the eye. Archer must solve the murder and deal with the political rivalries that affect his German masters.

Deighton's novel captures the sense of defeat--the dark, moody time (which in real life was only just barely averted) after the all hope is lost and the British have suffered utter defeat. But life goes on, and this is what SS-GB is really about. There is a story here, about seemingly real people, and Deighton tells it. This is a book that I have made a permanent part of my library, and I re-read it every couple of years. It is that kind of book.

What if Hitler Occupied England?
The Battle of Britain was the turning point of World War II in the West. The period between 1933 and 1940 was an example the domino theory. The first domino to fall to the Nazis, strictly speaking, was Germany itself. Then Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway. Half of Western Europe was under German domination. By 1940, there was serious doubt that Britain would survive. The Battle of Britain was won by Britain because of the RAF.

However, it could have been different. Here is a book that explores life in Great Britain if the Nazi's had won. We follow a Scotland Yard Detective whose wife died in the bombing and whose son is growing up a captive. The King is imprisioned in the Tower and Churchill is dead. But life goes on. . .

A disturbing and dark look at what might have been.

A Course in Gb Syntax: Lectures on Binding and Empty Categories (Current Studies in Linguistics Series, No 17)

Author: Howard Lasnik

Absolutely excellent introduction to GB theory
This is by far the most readable introduction to GB theory I have ever come across. It does presume some knowledge of very basic syntax, but everything it covers from there on is explained very clearly. Granted, it was written in the late 80's, but this is all stuff you still ought to know! If only others could follow Lasnik and Uriagereka's lead...

Gb Night Before Christmas

Clement C. Moore's beloved poem about Santa's arrival on Christmas Eve has been illustrated by hundreds of artists since its first publication in 1823. Two collectors of antique children's books have selected a variety of these charming pictures from Arthur Rackham, Jessie Willcox Smith, Thomas Nast, and other renowned children's illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the images are from versions of the poem; a few are from antique postcards or magazines. Source notes for all the illustrations are included. Santa is dressed differently by each artist, but he is always "chubby and plump--a right jolly old elf" who brings joy to all good little girls and boys. This attractive edition of The Night Before Christmas will be enjoyed most by collectors of children's books or lovers of things Victorian. Youngsters who are already familiar with the poem will delight in comparing the different old-fashioned Santas and the children of long ago "nestled all snug in their beds." A charming holiday gift to leave under the tree on Christmas Eve for anyone who believes in the magic of Santa Claus. (Ages 5 to adult) --Marcie Bovetz

The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Tasha Tudor
I discovered this book 31 years ago, for my daughter and it is still loved by all the family. The illustrations are wonderful, warm, charming and delightful and bring a special meaning to the story. We still read it to all the young children on Christmas Eve and for adults we read the story and pass a grab bag gift every time the word THE is mentioned. It would not be Christmas without this book. It is magical.

A beautiful edition, to give as a gift
We have an inexpensive paperback version (see our reviews) of this classic poem, and we said that's enough for us. That was before we looked through this beautifully illustrated (by Bruce Whatley) edition of The Night Before Christmas.

The lyrics are the same, from book to book, but the fanciful illustrations in this one are enough to engage adults and children as they read this book together.

The perfect gift for any family whose Christmas tradition includes reading this classic!

Excellent artwork! And what child doesn't love this story!
Each page in this book is definitely a piece of art! Mary Engelbreit outdid herself on this one. I initially checked it out from our local library and then decided I wanted it for our girls. It's a book I want them to be able to read to their own children one day! I would definitely recommend it!
