Excellent!!!!!
Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays (1894-1984) was one of the most prominent educators, social reformists and civil rights and religious leaders of his time. This book magnificently captures a time in American history that is far too scarcely documented: the Post-Civil War segregation era, leading up to 1970. This book gives a very personal description of Dr. Mays's struggles for dignity, respect and integrity, while simultaneously touching upon the collective struggle of African-Americans. I recommend this book for anyone seeking a greater understanding of African-American and American history. Mr. Mays was a pioneer in social reform and civil rights, was the President of Morehouse College from 1940-67, was a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and held the honor of being the "First" to hold several important and powerful positions in private and public organizations. He was a giant among men. I assure you that this is one of the best autobiographies that you will read.

Bible for students of Atlanta Campaign
One of the few accurate accounts of the Battle of Atlanta. Covers the battle on the XVII Corps front which gets little treatment in most other books on the subject.

Gardens that have made Charleston famous
Accomplished gardener Louisa Pringle Cameron and free lance photographer Lauren Preller Chambers collaborate in The Charleston Gardener to explore the lush and varied private gardens that have made the city of Charleston horticulturally famous, -- along with its numerous instances of Georgian and antebellum architecture. Brief yet thoughtful commentaries on the individual gardens showcased, along with the wonderful full-color photography, work in perfect tandem. Also very highly recommended is the previous and companion volume: The Private Gardens Of Charleston.

Complicated battle made easy.
To call the battle of Chickamauga complex is an understatement. When 100,000 men met in a forest occasionally broken by fields it turned into a "soldiers battle." This entry in the Time=Life series tells it that way, quoting frequently from diaries and letters of the soldiers who did the fighting. In between the lenghty excerpts from historical documents is a running commentary on the Tullahoma Campaign that preceded the battle, the battle itself, and the retreat of the Union Army to the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Maps highlight the details of the battle. A well-done entry that is an excellent introduction to the battle. If you are a Civil War buff who has studied the battle, there are better choices.

A Reminder Of What's Really Important
Ironically, I read this book on Christmas Eve. However, it's message can be realized at any time of the year. The book's focus is on a twelve-year old boy during the final months of his grandmother's life. His relationship with her and her "final lessons" are very heart warming. No nail-biting plot, nor exploding ending, but I finished the book feeling renewed. If you want a feel-good book with no profanity, violence or sex, give this book a try. Recommended to all readers of Christian fiction.

Fun, raucous romp through basketball's minor league.
The Commercial Basketball Association (wink, wink) may be minor league, but Charley's novel describing a year there certainly isn't.

This is as honest a portrayal as we are likely to see about any sport. Exposing the dark side of the basketball business -- and most of it's participants -- at first left me yearning for a more wholesome, less complicated (and more naive) view of the game. Soon the story hooked me and I was able to look at the ugly, and alongside it the excitement and beauty as well.

It is a human triumph that one's love for the game, and for one's teammates, survives assaults of all kinds. Charley's love shines through. If you love hoops, this is one of a handful of books I'd call, "must read."

A Review of Boris Pasternak's Life
I have always wondered what Boris Pasternak's life was like and this book more than adequately answered that wonderment. The passionate feelings between two family members and their views of life, specifically and in general, to the events unfolding around them in pre- and post-revolutionary Russia are astounding. It is like being transported back to a time and place where you feel as if you were part of the times, travelling, seeing, doing and feeling what Boris and Olga did. How sad that they were unable to visit with each more frequently during their lives, and that in the end, he was unable to attend her funeral for as much as he loved her. This book is very poignant and teaches timeless lessons and gives us dramatic reminders for our day.
