Great Introduction to South Carolina Gardening
During the landscaping of our new home, I used this book continually to get a concise review of the plants I was finding at the nursery and that our landscape designer recommended. However, I found that for long-term care we needed a more detailed reference.

Excellent Historical Fiction
Descendents of both sides will appreciate Larry Williamson's fair representation of the historic Battle of Horseshoe Bend, where General Andrew Jackson broke the resistance of the Muskogi (Creek) Nation in a skirmish that led to the Trail of Tears. In a clever and well-written novel, true to the historical events contained therein, Williamson brings to life what might have been the loves, emotions, fears, and ambitions of the innocent people, both European settlers and Native Americans, caught in the no-man's-land of this American Tragedy. The novel disturbs, but uplifts, as it exposes the difficult and dangerous life, for native and settler alike, on the Alabama frontier, along the Tallapoosa River. It's full of action--a good buy and a good read.

A Nice Look at the Georgia Version of Populism
In several significant studies of populism, including the well-known work of Lawrence Goodwyn, populism is said to have derived almost directly from the frustrations of the Farmers' Alliance, the agrarian movement that began in Texas in the 1880s, in trying to change the economic establishment for the betterment of small farmers. But this author contends that areas in Georgia that were strongholds for the Alliance were not where the Populist Party was strongest in Georgia. This book examines the Populist Party from a Georgian perspective, focusing on its core members, the "wool-hat boys," and their leaders.

The wool-hat boys were hard-working farmers increasingly under economic duress due to economic forces out of their control, including poor soil conditions, depressed prices for their cash crops, and the crop-lien system that kept them in virtual servitude. They are contrasted with the "silk-hat boys," or city slickers who lived by exploiting the wool-hat boys. They were not primarily sharecroppers or tenants.

A new party in the South had to contend with the strength of the Democratic Party which had led the South into the Civil War and had led the resurgence against Reconstruction. A majority of farmers could never desert the party of their fathers. They were willing to remain with the Democrats even when looking for economic reforms. Nonetheless in the early 1890s, Populism was a significant political force.

The Tenth Congressional District in northeast Georgia was the center of Populism in Georgia. The author shows that the district had a long history of alternative politics, often supporting the Whig Party before the War. The district had been home to Alexander Stephens and Robert Toombs, two distinguished politicians who often took independent stances. The leader of the Populist Party in the Tenth District and the entire state was Tom Watson, himself a well-to-do farmer and lawyer.

The book focuses on the various personalities and factions of the Georgian Populist Party as they tried to gain ascendancy over each other and over the state government. One is struck by the crudeness and violence in the political campaigns of the late 1900s in Georgia. In addition, the issue of race played a prominent role in those campaigns in Georgia. Both the Democrats and the Populists used intimidation in controlling voting among blacks. As the Populist Party declined at the turn of the century the era of Jim Crow was advancing.

This book does not attempt a general overview of agrarianism and Populism, but it does add to the general understanding of Populism. The book is easy to read. A map is provided of the counties and districts of the 1890s showing populist strongholds. The book largely focuses on personalities, especially Tom Watson. One gets a sense from this book that Populism was not the profound democratic movement claimed by others, especially Goodwyn. The party was mildly reformist at best.

Mystery of the missing dummy
Ventriloquist Skipper Keats had his fans, but his family certainly wasn't among them. Therefore it just seems like Skipper is harassing them from the grave when the dummy he asked to be buried with disappears from the coffin and son Will is forced to track down the thief. Thus begins Will's odyssey to learn more about the three things he had successfully put behind him up 'til now--his father, his family, and the world of ventriloquism. This is a well-plotted mystery with psychological overtones and complex, three-dimensional characters. Get it and read it--you'll be glad you did.

Tom, Sybil, Jay better watch out...............
To begin I have a hard time rating this book I give it more like 3 1/2 stars... I will explain the rating at the end of the review. Atlanta Live is a radio talk show. Dr Jasmine, Evelyn and Malone are the commentators. They are not just co-workers, they are friends from way back. Dr. Jasmine is the hard rock, pushed you to the limit and reel you back in personality, gives advice for troubles, but off the show she is falling into darkness because of her extravagant, don't want to go back to where I come from lifestyle. Evelyn is sweet, concerned, caring wish my family could just love me, I am here for you, Christian personality, problem is she is in love with the holier than thou preacher man. Evelyn needs to learn to love herself and stand up and be a WOMAN! Malone is the buff ex jock who is dreaming of a comeback, with the crazy ex wife. Their lives all come to a dramatic jolt when they receive a call from a young woman and Dr J pushes the limits on this call. Jasmine finds her world spinning out of control and she has put herself in a very destructive lifestyle. Malone finds that troubles don't last always, but deceit and heartaches and thinning pockets, he must endure first. Evelyn is betrayed and her secret from her past comes out, and it sets her into a world of despair, but a jolt of reality that you cannot hide, removes the blinders from her eyes and she finds that Love was right in front of her all along. This trio endures more havoac and jealousy, outrage, and the pages turn on their own. I thought this book was glued to my hands. At the same time I couldn't put it down but I also feel like something was missing and that is why I have rated it 3 1/2 stars... Carmen Green is my home girl and a great writer, but I wanted more with Jasmine, not enough background and explanation behind her behavior or the events in her life. I can see a sequel to this book, because Jasmine is a story all alone and her character did not prevail from the obstacles. Also, Carvel I understood he was a preacher, but what is up with this brother? Did he only want Evelyn because of her parents wealth and respect, because I kept thinking that maybe he was tipping out with a church member. How are you going to be a man of God, and still carry judgement on someone you claim to love? Just wanted more. Carmen bring us Jasmines story "Pu.....leeeeeeeezee!!!!

Too hot to handle
Too hot to handle would describe Dr. Jasmine and the crew of Atlanta Live on 104.9 FM. Atlanta Live is a lively talk show featuring Dr. Jasmine-great dispenser of timely advice, Malone- the straight man who keeps the women in line, and Evelyn- the sweetheart, oh so compassionate one. They are on top of their game, Atlanta loves them, until a phone call comes in that turns their world upside down. Dispensing advice in such humorous quips causes a young pregnant girl to attempt suicide and things begin to spiral out of control.

During the course of the novel, we find that Dr. Jasmine really doesn't have all the answers. She is not as well put together as one would believe. Her radio persona and he life don't match up. She causes undo agony for her co hosts who have problems of their own. Their worlds could easily shatter as glass hitting the pavement if they succumb to it. There were many plot twists that kept the pages turning quickly for me. I was engaged in Evelyn's life. Her childhood deeply effected her and made her compassionate. Malone's career and personal problems intrigued me, you never knew where he would turn up and oh Miss Jasmine...take a moment out of your day to pray for her she needs it.

Great book (4 1/2 stars)
The book was entertaining and a quick read, although I was a little confused because the book seemed more about Evelyn and less about everyone else. Jasmine and Malone were discussed, but Evelyn was the star of the book. The original caller was never discussed again. But Malone's character was the most satisfying. I'd read it again and definitely worth buying.

A good line is hard to find.
Leron King can't believe all that is happening to him - all because
of a date gone badly. Leron, Ra'ed, Xavier, Spurt, and Dave have
always had a smooth line for the ladies. Leron says one line too
many when he meets Anesia.

Anesia is not what you call cute or pretty, but to an intoxicated
Leron she looked quite good. He gives her his home number and like
any hot-blooded woman looking for Mr. Right she calls and invites him
over for dinner. Since he was drunk when he met her, he doesn't
remember how she looks, but thinks she must look good if he gave her
his `real' phone number. Once she opens the door to her home, he
wishes the earth would swallow him up. Yet, he's a gentleman, so he
eats the dinner that Ann has prepared for him. After Ann lures him
to the bedroom and against his better judgment he has sex with her.
Now his troubles really begin.

Michelle Barkley, an Account Executive thinks she has Mr. Right but
instead she has the boring workaholic version. In walks Leron King,
Security Systems Specialist and she sees things start to pick up.
They date a few times, including a double date with Leron's best
friend, Spurt (James) and his new love interest Anesia, who
coincidentally is Michelle's boss. Things really get sticky as
Anesia sets out to ruin Leron for hurting her.

Author Michael T. Owens writes a comical tale of what could happen
when a playa gets play'd. This is a good fast read, although a
little slow at some points in the book.

A one-night stand should be more than a notion!
Leron is an aspiring author who pays the bills by installing security systems. Michelle is a career minded woman in advertising with a fiancé that she is unsure of. After literally bumping into each other, they would have never known that their lives would somehow be destined to intertwine in Michael T. Owens', Pick Up Lines.

Like any other weekend, Leron goes to the club to pick up women. After a few drinks he gives his number to a young woman named Anesia. The following weekend his boys stand him up but Anesia calls and Leron makes the split second decision to spend some time. He realizes he must have drunk more than he thought because she is nothing that he remembers. Despite not really being attracted to her, he sleeps with her anyway. Michelle gets ready for a night out with her fiancé only to find out that he plans to work all night. Frustrated with his neglect of her and her feelings she kicks him out and questions whether marrying him would be the right thing to do. Eventually Leron and Michelle hook up and we experience more twists and turns than a boardwalk pretzel.

Mr. Owens has a definite flair for the dramatic. Six degrees (or less) of separation is not wasted in this tale of typical twenty-something drama, where nothing is off limits. This book is full of witty dialogue and conversation that will have book clubs talking way into the night. However, for this reader these characters become instantly predictable and then take a sharp turn into people we don't recognize making the resolution of the storylines unbelievable.

If you want a quick, drama filled read, pick up Pick Up Lines.

¿I¿m in a selfish state of mind...¿
is how character Michelle Barkley put it as she rehearsed what to tell her fiancé Greg Colbert instead of coming clean regarding her involvement with main character Leron King. This story is all about the consequences that may follow when one comes from a selfish place. Following Leron's reckless one night stand it doesn't take long for life to fall apart for Leron and Michelle, whom both suffer the wrath of the 'woman scorn.'

Michelle goes running to her best friend, Tonya, with her troubles which could turn out to be the worst thing she's ever done, while Leron's ego won't allow him to tell a soul, not even his long time friend Femia whom had been his shoulder since childhood. He even goes home to New Hampshire to attend Femia's graduation and seeing her face to face he still doesn't fess up, but does take notice of how she has filled out! Tisk, tisk, is there now love in the air for Leron and Femia, maybe we will find out in Mr. Owens' next novel.

Michael has taken a lighthearted approach, where his sense of humor peeks through as he spins this fast paced tale of very real disadvantages of being a player. Written in first person and told from the perspectives of Leron and Michelle, the story unfolds in Atlanta Georgia, but could just as well be anyplace, USA. Michael's style alone is enough to keep you turning pages, but there is also an element of suspense, which I like that also kept me wondering about the characters. There are some areas that I felt could have been covered in depth for greater insight, but nevertheless, it is a well structured, light, and entertaining read filled with an assortment of colorful characters that you'll find yourself rooting for. It's like a romance novel from a male's prospective and I recommend that you read Pick Up Lines for yourselves.

Not Good
Don't get this book. The earlier reviewer was correct. I found a free guide on the internet that had better maps and was more in depth. This book is interesting but I kept having to turn from the tour to the back to follow the optional stops which was annoying. I had also read several books about the battle before I went on my tour and noticed that the author had taken his interesting stories right out of these books which I didn't like. I also recommend the War College Guide and the new book by the same author that has a guide to the Battle of Chattanooga (Storming the Heights).

Good not Great.
As is typical of Dr. Woodworth's books, he has once again rehashed old material into something new. The maps are excellent but the paths this book leads the reader down are too well worn to truly be interesting. Also, the way the book is laid out with regard to touring the Chickamauga Battlefield is cumbersome. The reader has to move from the front of the book to the back in an awkward way to visit the optional excursions. These should have been left in order and the reader simply allowed to skip them at their discretion. I agree with the other reviewer that the War College Guide is better if the reader has any Civil War touring experience. In comparison to the other guide books available, this one definitely rates as mediocre. A quick search of the internet before a visit to the park will net the reader a much better guide and probably one for free!

Fall in love with Chickamauga
I have spent three days on the Chickamauga battlefield with this book. Since I live in the area, the days were not consecutive and I did some of the stops twice, but it only added to my pleasure. This book will give you all the details you want to know.

I grew up near Gettysburg and thought I could not love a place as much as I do Gettysburg; but with this book as my guide, Chickamauga is getting close.

This series (Hallowed Ground--two books so far, the other is on Gettysburg, which I've also used and reviewed) takes you "off the beaten path" and gives you insight into the battle that you do not get from the official park tour. If you include the option excursions you will really enrich your trip.

The maps are clear and the directions from stop to stop are percise. The book is also illustrated and enhanced with various drawings from Battles and Leaders of the Civil War.

I definitely recommend it to you. This book, like the one on Gettysburg, says it will take you six hours to hit all the stops--perhaps if you rushed and didn't take time to think about what you're seeing and reading; I recommend eight hours as a minimum, because the optional excursions are worth it.

P.T. Deutermann's latest is a topnotch topical thriller bursting with the expected expertise and insider knowledge he picked up as a Navy captain and arms control specialist. It's also something else: an unexpectedly resonant portrait of people, good and bad, who have been chewed up and spit out by military bureaucracies. Both the hero (an unlucky military investigator named David Stafford, whose career has been short-circuited by whistle-blowing and whose personal life is a disaster area) and the heavy (a career Army bean counter and petty thief, Wendell Carson, who suddenly gets the chance to move up and almost blows it at every occasion) are carefully drawn and fully credible. So are the underlings, officers and FBI agents who thread through their lives. This becomes especially important when Stafford--trying to track down a container of deadly biological nerve gas that Carson has stolen from an Army base in Georgia--crosses paths with a young girl who seems to have psychic powers. In less skilled hands, this kind of rogue element could send a vehicle skittering. But Deutermann quickly gives the girl and her keepers (a mysteriously intriguing woman teacher, a protective small-town policeman) such a strong presence that they become vital to the story's exciting and moving conclusion. Other of his excellent thrillers available in paperback include The Edge of Honor, Official Privilege, Scorpion in the Sea, and Sweepers. --Dick Adler

Quite Chilling
Very descriptive of the Monster and its workings. Could have been a little overly stated. As the story progressed my interest perked and suddenly it turned into a full fledged rampant read.
The chenical weapons of the world could reek more havoc than any army in history has. The sad fact is most countrys have a great array of these killers and the ability to produce many more. Let us hope that this fiction never turns into fact for the sake of humanity. The last fifty pages will surely give a cold feeling up your spine.

Excellent fast-paced read
What more can I say?...This book had interesting characters, believable actions, and a story-line that captures and holds your interest. I listened to the unabridged audiobook version and you simply cannot beat reader "Dick Hill" for drawing the listener into a book. He's my favorite. This was my first P.T. Deutermann book -- and it prompted me to pick up another of his. An excellent author and book!

Great story. My only cricism is that it is too short.
Deutermann's other books would benefit by offering a tear-out Navy acronym cheat-sheet. This one is shy of acronyms. Wow, what a story! Deutermann has a great gift for narrative and the ability to paint rich, believable characters. Dave Stafford, the principal character, is the only one who doesn't come off as a butt covering macho bureaucrat. Highly recommended to anyone who likes believable action yarns.

Not worth the effort
unless one likes reticient women who are constantly in denial, this book can prove frustrating. I am a die-hard Sandra Brown fan, but Megan really startedto annoy me as she had a man who would do anything for her and put up with a lot of rubbish from her. Somewhat reminicent of Linda Howard's All that Glitters which also had an annoying heroine.

Ho-Hum
This book was okay. I picked it up because I was bored one day and it looked relatively short and it was by Sandra Brown so I figured I couldn't go too wrong. And I didn't. This book moved along pretty quickly, it wasn't a heavy read so I was able to put it down and do things as I went along.

The plot isn't too heavy. The characters were pretty interesting. This one I'd save for a slow day.

Awesome book!
The library at my school has that book. It's been favorite book since I read it for the first time. I love the plot and characters. I also think the love scenes are excellent. Sandra Brown is truly an amazing writer.
