What life was really like for one Southern womanMagnolia LeGuin was a woman struggling to deal with daily life as it was post-bellum. This includes frequent childbirths, servant problems, and few if any modern conveniences. Yet it is also a testiment to the power of love between a husband and wife and a mother and her children. I found it far superior to many of the women's diaries put out for publication these days and would recommend it highly. -Marianna

Too Good To Be True, But We Can WishThis is a great fantasy/romance novel. You know that it will never happen to you (or to anybody), but it sure sounds good. It is really easy to get swept up in the passion and romance of the book, but coming back to reality is a real drag! I recommend it for those hopeless romantics who want to be reminded of why they are so hopeless and for those who aren't romantic at heart but want to be. It's easy reading and will take your mind off of your problems and deep into Janelle Taylor's world. Just remember, you have to come back...

A historical look at Georgia's Coast.Lure_and_Lore is a book of interesting historical people, events, and places on Georgia's "Golden Isles". The 15 barrier islands of Georgia are enchanting enough, but the stories here give insight to some of the forgotten history behind them. One low point though; Jekyll and St. Simons Islands are well represented while Cumberland Island has few mentions.

Politics of the US MintAfter a recent trip to Dahlonega, Georgia, I'm became obsessed with wanting to know more about the U.S. Mint that had been there and it's history. To say that "The Neighborhood Mint" by Head & Etheridge gave me all the information I ever wanted to know would be an understatement. Their 200-page book is packed with facts, figures, stories, and bits of history that sometimes were overwhelming. At times you get the feeling the authors are "beating a dead horse", but I was never left with mysteries or unanswered questions. Being a student of US coins, I was fascinated as to the role politics played in the coinage of our money, establishment of mints, and whom the mints employed. The authors drill down deep into the personalities and motives of the individual players. Additionally, I was fascinated to learn that Dahlonega was the site of the first American gold rush, not California. The Dahlonega mint never did produce the coinage anticipated by its developers for numerous reasons, which is also explained. I wouldn't recommend this book to the fainthearted. If you are history buff, coin collector, or a student of politics, this is a good read. If you are not, stay away.

Good book for the Outer Banks area. The first third of this Sierra Club book was put to use on our Outer Banks vacation. This is a good book that covers every part of the coast, not just the barrier islands. I liked the historical and cultural background presented on each area. I expected there to be a great deal of information on the local flora and fauna since it is a Sierra Club book, and there was. It provides a wonderful listing of birds and animals to keep your eyes out for. There are also good explanations of the geology behind the coast in the introduction. I would have liked a little more information about each area (there is no info on lodging, food, etc.) and some of it was outdated. The book is appealing because it covers the entire southeastern coast, so I know I will use it in the future!
It didn't take long for the detectives to determine that the dead woman was really Coretta Collins, a nurse who had worked with Dr. Brooks on many cases. But shortly after the discovery was made, Harrison Brooks was also found dead. He had been tortured to death. Someone wanted information. What was the connection between Dr. Brooks and Collins that caused Coretta's death? The investigation showed that they had worked together at the Oaks Nursing Home and it appeared that more than the average number of Dr. Brooks' patients had died. Had she performed mercy killings of the old people who were barely alive anyway, or was it something more sinister? Was she killing them for money?
Malador Cruikshank was a self-made man. He took advantage of the few breaks that had been thrown his way by fate. But after his brother, Beaufort's accident and his own promise to Beaufort to honor his death wish, his eyes opened to the biggest break of all. When Dr. Brooks entered his life, he saw the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together.
Wade and Leda had lives away from their police work. Leda especially had family responsibilities that kept tugging at her mind and pulling it away from her work. Her parents were ageing. Her mother had recovered well from her accident but Leda had been forced to take a leave of absence in order to nurse her through the recovery. But then her father began having problems. Wade tried to help her but what could one really do to help people when they got old?
This story provides a strong and surprising protagonist, along with a very interesting mystery. The police are led on quite a chase and finally decide they require the services of a "psychic". The story is entertaining and will keep you guessing as you try to solve the case and determine the end result of all those involved, before you reach the end of the book.
