Amazing breadth of sources, genres, view of the city
I can only visit this beautiful, ineffable city once a year, but this wonderful volume of literary gems makes me feel like I live there all year around. There is SO much more to know about the Hostess City of the South than one finds in "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."

Always something new...
I've been to Savannah I don't know how many times; have walked the streets and squares and read the historical markers; have devoured some local history and novels--such as MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL. But, now I don't feel like I knew Savannah at all. I learned so much more in LITERARY SAVANNAH. I highly recommend it for anyone who has visited (and loved, of course) or is planning a visit to Savannah.

Wonderful amalgamation of Savannah - Past and Present!
This book is exceptionally well done and brings all the facets of a Southern Gem - Savannah - together in one book. For anyone who loves the old South, I would strongly suggest this book. The compilation of stories show a rich wonderful city that has had its own share of joy and sorrow. The editor did a wonderful job pulling literary tones together in a unique and complimentary fashion, sounding a true lyrical tribute. My favorite stories are by Conrad Aiken and Flannery O'Connor. The description of Savannah by James Ogelthorpe is astonishing. The piece that stole my heart , however, was written by Aberjhani entitled "Return to Savannah." The voice of the poet moves the words straight to the core of the reader.

Caught in Atlanta
This is a wonderful story based on the true life of a young girl. The author has taken Sallie Clayton's diary and turned it into an account of life before, during, and after the Civil War.

The only problem is the long footnotes. Some of these notes take up most of the page and tell boring historical information. Sometimes, it helps set up the plot. At other times, it's annoying and makes me want to throw the book against the wall...

I say you should read this book if you want to look inside the life of a Civil War woman, or if you just want to learn more about life during the Civil War...either way, it's a wonderful book.

A Fascinating Look At War Time Atlanta
I found this work fascinating! Sallie Clayton's account was so descriptive as to make day by day life in war time Atlanta come alive. Her account of Sherman's seige was particularly engrossing. A must read along with other such biographical accounts of the period.

Another document to the Horrors of the Lost Cause
An interesting and provocitive account of the attacks on the civilian population of Ante-bellum Georgia by Federal forces under command of William (kerosene) Sherman. This book substanciates that the "Lincoln-Sherman Plan" to make Georgia "howl" was an unpresedented reaction to propaganda and political gain. The sacking and burning of Atlanta and its long term effect on the state are sobering. Another book related to this topic that fully illustrates this unlawful and evil destruction is "The War-Time Journal of a Georgia Girl," by Eliza Francis Andrews.

The "Hounds of War" destroyed Georgia's economy well into the 20th Century.

A Different Kind Of Love Story
Tokyo Blues is a book of passion based in modern Japan. The reader is immediately drawn into this compelling story, which retained my interest to the very end. It is beautifully written and reveals the thought provoking motivational forces behind the actions of the main protagonist. The sexuality is blistering and the cultural components enlightening. Anyone who has ever been disappointed by life in spite of all good intentions, and who was fortunate to experience brief episodes of joy, will fully appreciate this tale. It's a wonderful read and I highly recommend it.

Poignant Love Story Set in Japan
I thoroughly enjoyed this book especially because of the very real emotions of the main characters as well as the Far East setting. The strength of the heroine is depicted totally right. No matter what happens, she will go on regardless of conflicts, no matter how difficult to overcome. I could only wish I had her beautiful strength. Her point of view and philosophy for living are inspiring. I still get goosebumps as I write these lines about this wonderful tale of love and sacrifice.

Tokyo Blues Shikata Ga Nai! (It can't be helped!)
Reading this book reminded me of the trials and tribulations in my own life. Given to me by my granddaughter, and being aware of our great gap in age and life experience, I was surprised that this love-story, or for that matter any love-story, could hold my interest to the degree it did. And what a love-story it is! Aside from its literary qualities-excellent character development, well-crafted dialogs, etc., the author's psychological insights made me feel as if I were a participant in the story itself.
I recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt imprisoned by circumstances and yearned for release. A great tale!

History made interesting
My son has a passion for Ancient Egypt. As a homeschool mom I have tried to encourage this, however, I felt that he should understand that history did not come to a screeching halt in Egypt after the death of Tutankhamen. In reading this book we not only enjoyed a page turning adventure that we couldn't put down, we also opened up an entirely new line of study. My son even wrote mock news paper articles in the, "Language of the time," bearing the sad news of the defeat of the Gallant Gordon. This book was invaluable in our study.

The History of Savannah
Interesting account of Savannah, GA from the first settlers to present day.

An Enchanting Look at Savannah
I read this book several years ago when I was planning a trip to Savannah with my two young children. The story of Savannah is perhaps the most interesting story of any city in the world. Like double chocolate is to a menu, Savannah's rich history is a favorable spice to an enchanting city. "Eden on the Marsh" captures the romance of Savannah with its detailed writings, drawings and photographs.

Florida Landscape Plants
This is a worthwhile book for a number of reasons, however, it has one major omission. The positive factors: 1) Excellent plant descriptions including details like salt tolerance level; 2) wonderful (and most appreciated) treatment of botanic names by giving the pronunciation and derivation of the Latin words (Thanks!). The omission concerns color photographs of the plants discussed. The publisher included a few color pages of plant drawings which are mostly useless and confusing. A good garden book needs to have extensive color photographs. I am sure that the author would agree!!

The absolute last word on Florida Landscape Plants!
This is the text book used to teach horticulture classes and plant identification at the University of Florida. All Horticulture graduates and Landscape Architecture graduates at UF have studied from this book. Dr.s Watkins and Sheehan have put more than 5 decades of combined Florida horticultural expertise into this book.

An Essential, Exhaustive, Clear Reference
I haven't left this book alone for a day since I bought it. The book provides, in a catalog format, all of the essential information one might need to evaluate the suitability of a very wide variety of native wildflowers, shrubs and trees.

The organization of the book is helpful in that it categorizes the plants as long-lived wildflowers, short-lived wildflowers, shrubs, trees, palms, et cetera. Each individual plant is represented by a good photo and a consistent presentation of essential data: culture, propagation, zone, soil requirements, et cetera, so you can easily and quickly access needed information.

A drawback for Central or North Florida readers: the book seems to be heavily weighted toward southern Florida natives.

A suggestion: a clear identification of the habitat within which each plant is likely to be found would be helpful, especially to those interested in habitat restoration, as I am.

A Must-Have for All Gardeners
If you want to start, enhance, or improve a native Florida garden, this book has it all! From basics like how to prepare your site before planting (wish this book had been published two years ago!), to selecting the right plants for your site, to pictures of the plants, Rufino Osorio has covered it in this book. I thought I knew a lot before reading it, but now I rely on this text to help me refine my own native garden with buying new plants, pruning and propagating existing plants, (possibly even removing some existing ones), etc. Whether you're a relative novice like me, a true ground-zero beginner, or an experienced gardener, this book belongs on your shelf. My only note of caution is that this purchase will be only the beginning of a long list of acquisitions; in the two weeks since buying this book (got one early through Mounts Botanical Garden in WPB), I have already purchased about 20 new plants.

Gwinnett County Georgia churches : reprint of 1911 book, Gwinnett churches

Excellent Secondary Source
J. C. Flanigan did an excellent job when he compiled this book on the churches of Gwinnett County in 1911. He included every church that was in the county at the time. However, the county has changed much since the time this book was written and the number of churches in the county are inumerable. This book needs to be majorly updated in a second edition by another author. I have also, however, caught a few mistakes concerning dates on certain churches that and pastors. This book is still very good and contains some very interesting sketches on the churches. It even includes some pictures of churches and ministers and prominent laymen. It is intersting to see how the First Baptist Church of Lawrenceville and Snellville, etc. looked a hundred years ago and see how they have changed SO much today.

History/members of Gwinnett Co GA Churches in 1911.
This book is no longer on the list of scarce books on the history of Gwinnett Co GA. Now, reprinted, all the information on the founding of Gwinnett Co GAs early churches, is available once again. And, if you are lucky to have had an ancestor who was a minister, you may find a biography, with information previously unknown to you. One hundred copies sold in first 45 days.

inspiring
This is the story of the man who built and kept the St. Simon's Light and of his love for a wealthy young lady. James Gould is sort of an everyday Joe who ends up carving a lasting life in coastal Georgia. Gould's story is intertwined not only with St Simons and Georgia but with the post revolutionary United States. The scene in the book in which the lighting of the lighthouse is celebrated is one that I still remember, and it's been years. Price's older works are better and this is one of them.

Typical Henty
Henty, as always, manages to find a young, strong, and healthy lad that attains high connections in the army and court. I would say that this book would probably be interesting to people under the age of 13. It might be good if you want your kids to get into history. Henty actually has done a fair amount of research, it seems. I read this when I was still young, so it didn't seem that bad. However, this is NOT recommended to adults, or people who think they are.

Excellent
This is the first book by Henty I've read, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. I suppose I judge a book by its cover a little to much, and I was putting off reading this book because I wasn't too excited about reading a book written a really long time ago. But after I started, I had a tough time putting it down. Sure, the plot was simplistic, but there was plenty of action to keep me occupied. Be forewarned, however - I'm a high school student, and there were a lot of words in that book that I didn't know the meaning of. Unless your command of old english is pretty good, you will probably have some trouble with some of those words. But don't let that stop you - read the book with a dictionary close at hand. It isn't often that you get to read an exciting book and learn a pile of new words while you do it! Overall, this is a great book for any kid or kid at heart who has the patience to consult the dictionary every now and then.

The Best Henty I've Read!
This book is COOL! I've read several Henty books, but this is my favorite so far. It's about a boy and his cousin who are helping to fight the Catholics, who are opressing the Huguenots in France in the 1500's. The boys are very courageous, so they get into a lot of exciting situations! There are sword fights, lots of battles, sieges of towns, daring escapes, and at the end, St. Bartholomew's Eve: the night the French Catholics began their horrible massacre of thousands of innocent Huguenots. Will the boys and their friend Claire survive? You'll have to read it and find out!
