comprehensive look at Savannah's rich historySavannah: A History of Her People Since 1733 offers a chronological view of Savannah history, including period photogrpahs and sketches. If you are acquainted with Savannah, this book will help solidify your knowlegde. If you are new to Savannah or need to learn more about the city, the book will increase your knowledge. The only drawback -- the authors should have given more attention to the 20th century... Babe Ruth's historic home run in the city's minor league stadium, some devastating hurricanes etc.

A great primary source! This is a book-length reprint of Brig. Gen. Quincy A. Gillmore's report of the siege and reduction of Fort Pulaski, Georgia, in 1862 during the American Civil War. It is well-illustrated with photographs, engravings, maps, charts, and tables. It affirmed the superiority of modern rifled artillery over masonry fortifications and is the personal story of one man's role in our continuing search for national security. A must for all fans of Civil War heavy artillery and siege operations!

Southeastern Wildflowers

Southeastern WildflowersThis book is a gem! Southeastern Wildflowers is a very informative and useable book. Its small format and plastic cover make it even useable in the garden! The author covers basics of culture and propagation in a "reader friendly" way. The language is informative and concise, without talking over the heads of beginners. Cultural requirements and propagation notes for featured plants are covered in depth, and in most cases, the author also lists several related species, with notes on differing cultural requirements for those as well. I think this will become one of the books I use most often for growing and propagating native wildflowers. The only shortcoming I can mention is that I didn't find a couple of my (more obscure) favorites there, but many, many plants and families are covered. How wonderful to find a really great reference book at such an affordable price too.

The Garden as A Life MetaphorLydia Longshore's, The Southern Garden, is not the typical pretty picture book about gardens. Although it is lavishly photographed, and written by a true garden lover and gardener, Longshore unflinchingly describes the breakup of her marriage and her attempts to "bring order and beauty to the bleakest of domestic moments."
Her description of her childhood, her family, her own children, and her recovery after her divorce is haunting but without a trace of self pity.
Longshore takes the idea of the garden and illustrates how much human life is truly part of the natural life: planting, growth, pruning, death -- all these events happen both in a garden and in one's life.
As profound as any book of philosophy, as well as vastly informative, and lushly romantic.

Genie Tells How it All BeganI was thrilled when I found this book, and the contents did not disappoint. Ms. Price shares, with her usual humor and spirit, how she and Joyce Blackburn found St. Simons Island, fell in love with its history and natural beauty, and eventually made their home there. She goes on to describe how she came to write her famous St. Simons Trilogy and drew ever more pilgrims to visit her fabled Island. I have now read all her fiction, and visited the Island twice, and I can personally attest to the magic that is St. Simons. If you love Eugenia Price and want insight into her novels, this is an excellent place to start.

To read by the fire in an evening, - laugh, weep, enjoy.!"To Mamma with Love" it is dedicated, and this is a love story, of growing up well loved at Pinedale. Mrs. Graham has put on paper most thoughtfully her story of growing up in a big family with an artist father in the wonderful north Georgia hills. Her mother, Mamma, was surely little short of an angel, raising almost a dozen kids on a most uncertain income, teaching the children at home in addition to canning and cooking, keeping them all in well-mended togs, and catering to the needs of her husband who had the temperament said to be typical of artists, up in the clouds to down very, very low. The milk cow, the dogs and cats were all pets. If a baby bird died there was a funeral planned and carried out by Brenda and little sister Suzanne. The seasons of the year come to life under Brenda's deft pen. Some problems have solutions and some mysteries are solved. There are some good laughs and some good cries, too! And a big dose of faith in God when death strikes the busy Knight family.

A Wonderful source for geneology research. This book is wonderful. I have searched for months for the information I found in this book in one evening! This book is even more wonderful because it includes the marriage records of blacks. It is very difficult to find records on blacks in the south before the 1900's. I highly recommend this book to anyone searching for their roots.
