Oconee River: Tales To TellKatherine Bowman Walters, a school teacher and resident (now deceased) of the area does an excellent job of presenting the history of the Oconee River valley in middle Georgia from the "mound builders" through early indian occupation, frontier times, the revolutionary era, the civil war, the depression and into modern times. The book may be of limited interest to outsiders but to local residents, both new and old, presents a rare and facinating look at the historical importance of the area.

Excellent on slavery and the American RevolutionThis book is a real eye-opener for anyone, like me, who thought that slavery was not an issue at the time of the American Revolution.
Did you think slaves did not understand what was going on?
Have a look!

Candid look at old SavannahEnthralling essays about Savannah's noble and oft ignoble past! Includes essays about "Shoeless" Joe Jackson's days in Savannah, Bobby Jones time there in 1930, and a 1950s Elvis Presley concert that stirred the status quo and bemused the local media. Along the way we watch the city grow from an outpost carved in the vast wilderness to a modern city, see the rise of Savannah Jazz, and look on as a teenage Ted Turner learns to sail in Savannah waters. Also included are in-depth profiles about Savannah's lest than glorious past such as "Corruption Savannah Style", which looks at the vices of Georgia's mother city during the first half of the 20th Century. From the colonial era and James Oglethorpe to the 1970s, this book lays bare old Southern clichés and in doing so is great reading.

Undervalued StockRed Creek, a Requium is a masterpiece. Why Margaret Robison, known mainly in "poetry circles", is not famous to an Anne Sexton degree is a mystery. This book is nothing less than astounding. Almost beyond-belief beautiful, Red Creek is a #1 MUST for readers of poetry. This book is rich, not fluffy. Real, not "poetic." Ms. Robison is an example of why people should read poetry in the first place. And it's a book not just for poets or those who read poetry; it's a book for anybody who values insight and beauty.
Read it, but read it with a box of tissues close by.

Great novel of the SouthThis book was beautiful, as are all of Pamela Jekel's books. Wonderfully researched. Basically a "true story of the Old South" with what it was really like. No spoiled plantation daughters primping around, but the story of escaped slaves and the Seminoles, before they were a mascot.

The best player forecasts on the marketWhile everyone else is buying all the more well-known books, I've been using this little gem here for the past five years and have won my fantasy league EVERY YEAR. Ron Shandler has nailed pitching projections - his methodologies have helped me lead the league in ERA and WHIP each year. Looks like mine may be the first review posted here - but I'll bet it's because nobody else wants to share their secret!

Wonderful, moving and personalI lived on Sapelo with my family for four years as a teenager in the early 1980's. Although well removed now (I live back in my native Australia) I always think about my time there. My mother in-law, knowing of my attachment to the place, bought 'Sapelo's People' for me while on sabatical at the University of Georgia (it's funny how circular life can be!). I put off reading it because I was afraid I would find it too impersonal a history of some painful historical events happening to people I knew and cared about. When I eventually found myself in the right mood for it, I started reading. I can't express the feelings I went through. Suffice to say I was moved to tears at times. I was so glad that someone had been able to put into words the feelings of a place and people that I could never have expressed myself. And I was even gladder for a deeper understanding of the people of Hog Hammock, who included us into their community with such warmth and generosity. Thank you, William.

Savannah Armchair TourFinally, a cd-rom that offers useful information for travelers and others interested in Savannah. As a satisfied owner of the Charleston Armchair tour, I was thrilled to find that other historic cities are also available in this quality product. With the included maps, you can choose any building in the historic district and get several pictures with information about architecture, history, and stories of the building. I especially enjoyed the 'front door' and 'gardens, squares, and parks' tours. The photography is beautiful and includes a number of panoramic 360 degree pictures. I can't wait to revisit Savannah again now that I know what to look for.
