Days of wealth and leisure, gone forever
A meticulously researched and highly engaging book detailing some of the remaining "cottages" (if you consider a 16 room house with 5 bathrooms a cottage) at the Jekyll Island colony. If you're familiar with the subject, you'll already know that some of the wealthiest men of the late 19th and early 20th century made Jekyll (off the southern coast of Georgia, near the Florida border) their getaway of choice; some going to the extent of building elaborate residences for their brief sojourns South. This book details the histories of some of the remaining houses; who built them, who enjoyed them, and how eventually death and financial decline caught up with just about all of them. It's loaded with photos, and not just boring old architects' shots of the finished products- we are treated to casual snaps of the families having tea outside, playing with the kids in the pool, or going for a ride in the pony cart. Add to this the aforementioned well-researched history of the families and houses themselves, and you have a book that you won't be able to put down. I'm a dedicated remainder-and-used book buyer, but I'm going to gladly play Amazon for a new copy of this. It's absolutely worth it. Enjoy!

What a hero!
Gervaise's father wishes that his son will grow up to be a Knight of the White Cross, and so Gervaise leaves his dying mother and travels to Rhodes. When he arrives at Rhodes he never dreams of all the adventures he will be undertaking, and the excitement he will be involved in. First comes the rescuing of Ricord and Santoval, after which the Grand Prior knights Gervaise and his comrade, Ralph, which is a great privilege for the boys. Some time later, after visiting the house of Signor Vsados, Gervaise mentions to Ralph that he did not like the looks of the Greek who had also been at the Vsados household. Ralph laughs at him, but Gervaise's suspicions are aroused even more when he sees the man talking to a slave of the Order. After reporting to Sir John Kendall Gervaise suggests he disguise himself and go among the slaves, to try to find out if a plot is being arranged. What will he find? Gervaise has many more adventures, and also a little romance, for Claudia De Forli bestows her colours on him. Gervaise also sets an example by the boy-galley that he was put in command of. It is the only galley ever to have only young knights appointed to it. In the end Gervaise takes part in the Siege of Rhodes, which was a bloody affair. Don't miss reading this story of a gallant Knight of the White Cross!

Lee's Retreat : A History and Field Guide

Lee's Retreat Comes to Life
Noted Civil War historian Chris Calkins provides a great service to those who follow the path of the Army of Northern Virginia and the pursuing Army of the Potomac during the last week of the Civil War in Virginia. This is the latest of several published studies of the Appomattox campaign that Chris has authored.

Drawing upon his tremendous knowledge of the battles that broke the Confederacy's hold on Petersburg and the surrounding area in early April, 1865, Calkins provides a very useful, highly readable guide for those who would like to drive the official "Lee's Retreat" driving tour from Petersburg to Appomattox. The maps by Steve Stanley are excellent. Using "Lee's Retreat: A History and Field Guide", the traveler comes to grips with the first-person accounts that put flesh on the bones of the signs and limited-range AM radio messages available at selected stops along the trail. This nicely designed and sturdily bound paperback guide is well worth the modest cost and may well lead the reader to delve deeper into this fascinating period -- the final days of the Civil War in Virginia.

Actually, I wrote the book! The last I heard Windsor Press has gone out of business and there were 10 copies left at that time. I believe copies are still available at the Middle Georgia Historical Society on High Street in Macon, GA, and maybe at The Golden Bough, a specialty bookstore in Macon, GA. K. Simm

It is THE reference for both league commissioners and owners
Not only does it help me as an owner decide who to pick and in what round but it helps me as a commissioner. It explains the scoring method "Front Office Baseball" that my league (http://members.aol.com/dang25/baseball) uses. This is a must buy for any commissioner or owner
