In the middle of listening to this story I put in a tape that had a lot of noise on it which became increasingly loud. I called the Brillance Audio toll free number on the side of the box and they are sending a replacement cassett tape. No questions asked and no charge. You can't beat that.

A RICHLY INTERPRETED READING

Three women with magical gifts form the ladder on which Alice Hoffman hangs her latest mesmerizing tale. Voice performer Susan Ericksen brings a rich interpretation to the words of each as suspense mounts in a small New England town.

The Sparrow women's gifts or liabilities, as some might wish to see them, began many years ago when a young girl who was inured to all pain entered a tiny settlement. Elinor, the first of her descendants, can tell a liar from a mile away. Her daughter, Jenny, can actually see people's dreams as they sleep. And, the next in line, Stella, is able to look into the future.

"The Probable Future" is aptly named. What does the future hold for a trio so abundantly blessed or cursed?

Good book for beginner in AJAX

This is a great book if you just started learning AJAX and wanted to get a good overview of all the aspects of it. This book touches very lightly on all subjects of how AJAX is implemented in the real world.
I would recommending starting with this book, but If you've already been working on AJAX I would recommend ASP.NET AJAX Programmer's Reference.

Great Book for all web interface designers

A great read.
A must read for AJAX developers!
ASP.NET AJAX is a free framework for quickly creating efficient and interactive Web applications that work across all popular browsers.
This book will teach you:
1) Create next-generation interfaces with reusable AJAX components.
Enhance existing pages using powerful AJAX controls with support for all modern browsers.
2) Access remote services and data from the browser without tons of complicated script.
3) Take advantage of the improved efficiency and ease of use in Visual Studio 2008, with its built-in support for ASP.NET AJAX, improved JavaScript support, and a new Web page designer interface.
It starts you off with a intro into asp.net AJAX library and moves into a light introduction with JavaScript. Then moves into the core of the AJAX functionality with using several examples of xmlhttprequest object and transferring data using both JSON and xml.
It then leads you to the next logical step of the calling web services and makes great use of the inherit asp.net members and profiling functionality ALL THROUGH JAVA SCRIPT. Amazing really no more calls backs to the server to find out if they are a member.
It then leads you into the Next big step of the asp.net AJAX functionality which is the control toolkit. This is a absolutely free web controls that just work and christen does a great job at showing you how to do this in easy steps.
It wraps with showing the the asp.net futures section that is iffy at best. It uses an xml based approach to forming JavaScript and although very cool I don't believe will reach the production release.
Overall this book rocks and should be read by all interface designers

Hands on and helpful--a must have

After recently retiring, I was looking for a book to help me deal with some of the financial and psychological issues that crop up in retirement. I heard a radio interview with the author of this book and immediately purchased a copy of it.

I found the author's advice to be extremely helpful, practical and easy to digest. Most chapters contain a "back to basics" section which will help people who need a primer on certain retirement planning topics. The author then moves forward with more sophisticated advice.

What I liked most was that the author recognizes that each of us has his or her own comfort level when it comes to investments. He also understands that the early years of retirement are stressful and sometimes require us to reinvent ourselves.

Basic Primer on Preparing for Retirement

This book is simply written, easy-to-understand, and provides practical advice for everyone. The author recommends a realistic approach to investing that includes buying a diversified portfolio of index mutual funds. Other topics covered are investing in annuities ? fixed and variable, IRAs, and 401(k)s, and insurance (life, health, and disability).

Abromovitz, an attorney and financial educator, provides readers with a well-written explanation of the key components of developing, protecting, and rebuilding decimated retirement accounts. He recommends a pro-active hands-on retirement planning approach. In this 224-page, nineteen chapter book, Abromovitz covers how to make relatively safe investments that will continue to grow, how to plan for health issues and large medical bills, how to maximize your social security benefits, and how your financial safety can be improved by investing in stocks, real estate, annuities and 401(k)s.

There is no earth-shattering advice in this book. However, the author provides straightforward advice that can help individuals get and stay focused on the right track so that they can accomplish their retirement dreams.

Most individuals have not really thought about all aspects of the retirement process and have let the chips fall where they may. The devastating bear market of 2000-2002, unfortunately changed the retirement landscape for millions of individuals whose retirements have been postponed and many potential retirees have been forced to keep working to make ends meet. The reason for this was that most individuals did not understand or consider the risks of investing in the stock market.

By reading, studying, and implementing the wisdom in this book, readers will put the odds in their favor to obtain a secure and peaceful retirement. This book should be required reading by all individuals, whether or not they are approaching retirement since the advice provided will help all readers better manage their financial issues.

A Dynamic Contribution!
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-24
The editors, Julie Ann Gustanski and Roderick Squires have brought together a dynamic team of experts from across the country. The legal analysis chapters help all those who are interested, not only in knowing their own state's conservation easement laws, but those who are looking to help forge new or improved legislation in their state.

The case studies exemplify the diversity and range of land conservation options that are possible using conservation easements and add to the richness of the book.

While the reading may be legalistic to academic at times, the diversity of presentations serve to enhance this very rich volume of information. "Protecting the Land" serves as the first in-depth insight to the legal workings of conservation easement legislation across the country. This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST for all those "out in the field" as well as those who may be interested in learning more about the legal dimensions of easement enabling legislation, its history, how easements have been used, as well as a look to the future of land conservation in the US.

From the point of view as an academic, I also believe that this book will be extremely useful to those teaching in the legal arena that deals with conservation easements, as well as to those who are teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in resource conservation and environmental policy.

The caliber of contributors to the volume speaks for itself, from Steve Small to Todd Mayo and Bill Hutton, among others writing on the legal aspects of conservation enabling laws. And on the ground there are numerous contributing authors who have decades of knowledge and experience behind them, including Tom Daniels, Dennis Collins, Chuck Roe, and Julie Ann Gustanski. Those from academe tease out strands that have for too long gone unteased. Jack Wright for example brings both experience from the academic and practitioners perspectives, as do Daniels and Gustanski.

While the volume is not for the lighthearted reader, it addresses the subject matter extensively, and succinctly.

Overall I give this book 5 stars, it is well written, well documented, and provides the best single volume I have seen in more than two decades of experience with land trusts and the phenomenal tool we call conservation easements.

Great Planning Resource

I'm a public official with the planning function, looking for a better way to preserve farm land, open space and rural character. This book offers a lot of insight into the history and uses of conservation easements. The book is divided into sections that describe in detail how laws and courts in each section of the country administer conservation easements. I recommend this book - it is an excellent planning resource!

I received this book as a review copy years ago in a newspaper office, and it has served in good stead through careers in government and consulting. "There is no shortage of money, only different priorities...You can't teach a person anything unless he already knows it (but lacks the confidence to act on change.)" This book is a bible and a comfort to those trying to effect change and enlighten large or small groups . I have purchased several copies for friends over the years.

This book provided a detailed account of their journey to each state and what God revealed to them. I found it encouraging and thought provoking as this took place a couple years ago...
Each state received an impartation of what God wants from his people. I am passing the book along to others to read.

religions and its problems; religions and its solution to problems

Ruether and Gross share critical and reflective approaches to each other religious affiliation as both practitioner and scholar. Their open-mindedness and honesty of speaking about their own religion's weakness or corruption, also their willingness to learn from other traditions are invaluable to become an inspiration of reformation within one's own religious tradition as well as building interreligious dialoque among different traditions.

I feel this book really shows how religions should offer a vivid worldview and solution to problems we are facing as the citizens of the global village.

This is the way to do religion!

This book goes a long way towards undoing some of the most poignant mistakes made by traditional theologians who seek to divide the great ground of being into discreet plots for study. Religion, be it Buddhist, Christian or any other, is, at its heart not a set of received doctrines, but teachings about how to live. In this book Ruether and Gross weave together their life stories, the religions they practice, the teachings of those religions and the urgent questions that face people of faith today. The urgent question, of course, is how to weave back together all the pieces that reductionist thinking has split apart and in so doing reconnect us and the earth which gives us life.

This is a deeply readable and moving book. Its truth is greater than its title.

I could not put this book down. Step by plausible step events tumble downhill into a thoroughly believeable national catastrophe. It holds a mirror to the current mood that fighting terror trumps civil rights. Every American Jew should read this book and ask what he/she would do under the scary circumstances in this book. I highly recommend this book.

I have spent thirty years as a civil rights attorney. During the past eight years we've seen civil liberties evaporate in the name of national security. I returned from the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, where I represented two young Saudi men, and wondered what it would be like if America turned on Jews rather than Muslims. This novel takes place in the near future but is based on real history. Only the names and religions have been changed.

Insights From the Hebrew Scriptures for Lent and Easter
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-13
Lent and Easter are not times when very many pastors preach from the Hebrew Scriptures, so Rob Elder has done us preachers a real service in providing such a fine example of how the Old Testament can be fertile ground for Christian proclamation. Sensitive to the meaning of the texts in their original context, he applies them in a very contemporary way. Illustrations are as likely to be from current television as from the likes of Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw. His language is contemporary, and flows smoothly in the rhythms of speech.

This is a great book for any preacher's library, or for the layperson interested in pursuing a deepened spiritual journey during Lent and Easter.

A wonderful book!

This is the kind of preaching that nourishes the church! In this volume, Rob Elder serves up a full meal of appetizing stories, hearty reflections on scripture, serious theological convictions, and delicious good humor. Rob's passion for the Bread of Life is matched only by his quick wit and engaging style. Don't miss this great collection of sermons by a fine preacher!
