An outstanding anthology of essays.

Memories Of Our Future is an outstanding anthology of essays surveying the complexities of Mediterranean cultures; the diverse, changing space of the Balkans, Middle East, and North Africa -- areas of diasporas, dislocations, and genocidal exterminations provoked nationalism and religious fanaticism. As a Sephardic-Croatian Jew, Ammiel Alcalay confronts the deep resistance to change of any kind in this region, and describes his personal intellectual, cultural, spiritual, and political endeavor to help break down barriers between peoples, nations, and languages. Of special interest is his observations and analysis of the Israeli/Palestinian confrontation, Arab/Jewish poetics, and Jewish identity in America. Memories Of Our Future is seriously recommended reading for students of Balkan, Middle Eastern, and North African studies.

The best part

For me the best part of this book is not its engagement with some of the world's current sources of real and political pain, but its recommendation and honest appraisal of other books. Mr. Alcalay writes informatively and with tasteful purpose. Even the essays of a more personal nature I found moving, but the books he has read and recommends are the diamonds that too often remain beneath the rubble. I cannot say there is anywhere else I would have found some of these authors recommended or reviewed. Mr. Alcalay writes with enthusiasm about authors whose literatures will never make the weekend book page. These authors are diverse in approach (poets, novelists, essayists, historians) and smart. They provide more immediate accounts of other places and states, some of the light and the heavy. This book fills a need by providing the names necessary for readers to get better acquainted with writers in the Middle East and some chosen Eastern European regions. I recommend this book highly.

Ann Ree Colton's book is an ocean of grace for anyone who has ever lost a loved one. This book gave me an understanding of what my loved ones experienced after death, revealed how the dead may communicate with the living and provided me with ways to bless these loved ones after their deaths. The after death world is foreign to us, but not to Ann Ree Colton

Once again, Ann Ree Colton has outdone herself by jamming so much knowledge and wisdom into so few pages. For those that want to learn of the "types of Souls" and what transpires in the time before, during and after death - this is the book ! She goes into depth of the many "situations" that the Soul finds itself in and the "whys" behind it. As a Spiritual Minister and Medium, I found this book to be extremely helpful to my profession, and it acted as a "personal confirmation" to what I was "recieving" as Truth within my own Meditations about Death and Dying. When you are ready to addresss Life through Death - this is the book to aid you. Also may be of benefit to those who are losing a loved one or have just lost one through the Death process.

Imaginative integration of science and philosophy

David Tow's book is quite remarkable. He takes the most imaginative and advanced hypotheses of science and integrates them with philosophy, religion and history. It is truly an impressive effort. Tow drags us kicking and screaming into a new consciousness, a consciousness which compels a rudimentary and painful reevaluation of the notions of life, deity, ourselves, our universe and our destiny. The book deserves a large audience even if he is ultimately wrong. Tow's ideas point to an exciting and optimistic future.

This book provides a radically expanded but easily understood view of the process of evolution beyond biological Darwinism.

The five extended chapters review the evidence for interpreting all phenomena, including- biological, social, technological and religious processes in evolutionary terms; finally extrapolating current trends into future outcomes.

Although a number of authors have attempted to extend the evolutionary paradigm to include areas such as behaviour, ideas and social development, none has attempted such a rigorous all-encompssing analysis.

The evidence as presented is compelling without being technical or tedious, allowing non-academic readers ready access to this exciting thesis, with immense philosophic as well as scientific significance for future generations.

How on earth can you call a book about sustainability 'Mindful Conservatism', you might ask. Please don't let your preconceptions and the current usage of the term 'conservatism' make you turn away from this important and timely book.
C. A. Bowers opens up one of the most crucial debates that we should lead if we are serious about an ecologically sustainable future. We generally shy away from this discussion because of its potential pitfalls, misunderstandings and a tradition of abuse of the term 'conservatism'.
I believe that Bowers' book is hugely important because it emphasises throughout the concept of mindfulness, as opposed to preconceived convictions. It challenges us 'to rethink our traditional political categories' and to question what the media and politicians want to make us believe. We have to learn to step out of the box because the traditional political vocabulary simply is not fit to cope with the sustainability challenge.
The central question of the book is 'What do we need to conserve in order to have a more sustainable future and just world order?' This clearly calls for a complex answer and is also arguably the most important question to be asked if we want to turn our destructive, exploitative, overdeveloped and overconsuming global world order into something which can sustain itself within the limits of the ecosphere.

It is the details in Janice MacKinnon's book that are spellbinding. How Saskatchewan could not meet is debt. obligations. How the previous government's Department of Social Services shredded all of its Departmental documents, so that nothing was left. The "discovery of cameras and other surveillance equipment used to spy on welfare recipients" (page 69). The financial problems with health care, and the massive firings in the civil service. We had heard the rumors, but MacKinnon's book gives us the details in black and white.

I was working for New Careers Corp. at the time the head office was moved to Kamsack. I remember how shocked everyone was. But it was only from reading MacKinnon's book that I found would that Minister Martin argued against the move. With expenses of a million for a building, and $200,000 telephone and transportation costs, it is no wonder that Janice MacKinnon moved the New Careers office back to Regina when She became Minister.

I highly recommend this book.

A fair and balanced look at her time in Government

This is a great book. Not only was Janice McKinnon a leader during some of the hardest days in Saskatchewan's history, she is a great historian and story teller.

I was impressed with her non-partisan look at the Blakeney and Devine governments. She protrayed their intentions and results fairly and balanced. Her look at her own political career was enjoyable as well as she documented the struggles and tensions within the Romanow government and the challenges that she had to make in her own department. If you are a fan of Canadian history, you will want to read this amazing and fun book to read.

Modelling Financial Time series

This is (still) an excellent book, ahead of its time when published in 1986. One of the issues he dealt with was the possible modifications to option pricing models (black-scholes type) that could be made to account for trending markets. This was before the crash of '87 and the subsequent wide-spread adoption of skewed volatility smiles and risk-reversals into option pricing.

This book is probably out of print permanently, but the author is working on a new book, the provisional title of which is "Asset Price Dynamics and Prediction" Target Date of March 2004. The chapters are loosely based on subjects covered in Modelling Financial Time series.

Chapter headings for Modelling Financial Time series:

1. Introduction
2. Features of financial returns
3. Modelling price volatility
4. Forecasting standard deviations
5. The accuracy of autocorrelation estimates
6. Testing the random walk hypothesis
7. Forecasting trends in prices
8. Evidence against the efficiency of futures markets
9. Valuing options
10. Concluding remarks

Rigorous but practical survey of time-series for traders.

The first edition was published in 1986. It is EXCELLENT. Taylor rigorously studies the use of nonlinear time-series (Box-Jenkins) methods to trade a variety of financial markets, including individual stocks, stock indices, currencies, metals, and agricultural commodities, finding that there is a small trend component in most markets that can be profitably traded. Taylor performed testing of time series back in the early 1980s, when computer power and financial data was much scarcer and more expensive. I am excited to see what he has come up with, now that computers and data are a zillion times cheaper.

"Money Players" is precisely what the sub-title says it is: "A guide to success in sports, business & life for current and future pro athletes." This is a detailed guide for athletes - should you stay in college or go pro, should you cheat and get an agent early (NO!), "The Business of Your Life," taxes and insurance and estates, saving your money, and much more. Any high school or college student would benefit from reading this book, because much of the advice here applies to everyone in life. And many high school kids would probably read it because of the sports angle.

Why is a book such as this one absolutely necessary? Let's look at the lives of two professional basketball players. In early January 2008, former NBA player "J.R." Isaiah Rider was arrested on a no-bail warrant. Following a dispute between Mr. Rider and his cab driver, the police discovered he had two warrants out for his arrest. His troubles with the law go back years, and he is hardly the first pro athlete to have his name in the paper for breaking the law. But it is always sad to see someone just throw their life away (SF Chronicle January 7, 2008).

Baron David, on the other hand, came to camp for the Golden State Warriors with a new attitude. Davis was upset about his contract and could have come to camp with a very bad attitude. But he had several conversations with the great Jerry "Logo" West, who basically told him how fortunate he was to be a professional basketball player and that Mr. Davis should "Be positive. Just go up there, shut up and play." Mr. Davis is now enjoying the best season in a stellar career. (SF Chronicle January 17, 2008.]

March Isenberg stresses honesty and integrity in this book. And he walks the talk. Many Amazon book posts have several 5 star reviews that just happen to come out a day or two after the book is published (sometimes the same day; sometimes even before!). You check those reviews and several of the writers have not reviewed another book - before or since. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Well, this book has been out 4 months and this is the first review and you may rest assured it is 100% my work with no input or suggestion of any kind from the author!

That's the way it should be. And if you have the good sense to read this book, you'll learn how the game of life should be played: The right way.
