Ken Gray has dared to challenge what we all have come to believe to be the "right" path for a student to follow after high school. The truth is that times have changed and the path to success no longer follows the same pattern it once did. I highly recommend this book for anyone who works in close contact with high school students. Many students go to college because they feel it's the only option... then drop out because it isn't for them. Ken Gray's book points to another option for helping these students to succeed.

A must read for teens (and parents who want their teens to succeed)

First mechanics: Getting Real is extremely well written. Dr. Gray weaves together statistics, ideas and research into a well organized, easily read 128 pages.

Secondly material: Sadly, too many teens are making career plans using information that is at least a decade out of date. Getting Real accurately updates readers at warp speed.

Dr. Gray bravely tackles the myth that a university degree is the key to a successful career and that all university degrees lead to high paying jobs. In today's job market, this just isn't so. Dr. Gray shows why success for today's teens will depend as much on creating detailed and achievable post-high school plans as it does on getting good grades. His definitions of career maturity for 10th and 12th grade students are revolutionary.

His ideas will come as a shock to Boomer parents who believe that teens should put off making career decisions as long as possible to keep all options open. Dr. Gray explains in detail why this old advice is bad advice.

The global economy has created a job market is volatile and complex. High school and college teachers have little training about labor market realities or effective career planning techniques. Therefore, successful transition from school to work is an individual responsibility. Getting Real provides teens the guidance they need to create sound strategies for building their first career paths.

I found this book very useful for helping my daughter and I discuss what it means to be gifted. It brought up questions I wouldn't think to ask, and offered answers she could choose from when she had trouble identifying her feelings. If you want to learn how your child feels about being gifted, this is a terrific way to start the conversation.

This book is easily one of the best overviews of the history of theological thought currently available. It is especially useful in that Dr. Peters is one of the first to grapple with post-modern theological thinking and its implications. Dr. Peters is particularly insightful in his explication of prolepsis, the idea that God is drawing us all toward a future which God has envisioned. There will be much food for thought here, especially for those seeking some support of orthodoxy without closing the door to other theological trends. I have not only found it helpful for my own study, but have used it to help answer tough questions from my parishioners

This book was the book that opened my eyes to the intelligibility of Christianity and the spiritual gifts that can be found therein. I was quite a skeptic before reading this book. But, being a woman of my times, he spoke straight to the "hermeneutical gap" that exists for so many of us growing up in the postmodern philosophical paradigm.

Peters spoke at my seminary a few years after I got my hands on this book. A gifted Lutheran and a man who luckily does not have his head in the sand concerning contemporary plights and religious thought.

Israel, Christians and The Way
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-13
In the introduction, the author talks about the closer relationship developing between Jews and true Christians and the rise of Messianic Judaism. The two stated aims of this book are (a) examining the intersection of Biblical promise and timing in our day (b) providing answers about Israel and the Jewish people to Christians and Jews.

Part One: The Time Has Come, deals with the 1948 rebirth of the nation of Israel, the 1967 restoration of Jerusalem to Israel, the growth of the Messianic Jewish movement and the revival among the nations.

The first chapter discusses biblical examples of God's intervention when His promise and timing intersected in the past, provides evidence of His faithfulness and points to the ways in which promise and timing are coming together in our time. Chapter Two shows how the rebirth of the nation of Israel is the most spectacular fulfillment of prophecy in the last two thousand years.

In the next chapter, Finto talks about Israel's reclamation of her ancient capital in 1967, nineteen years after the rebirth of the nation, according to the promise, while chapter four explores the fast growing Messianic Jewish movement both in Israel and throughout the world, which is another fulfillment of ancient prophecy. Chapter 5 provides evidence of the astonishing growth of Christianity in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The final chapter of part one shows how the church of the early 21st century is awakening to the Jewish roots of her faith.

Part Two: Questions People Ask About Israel and the Middle East, attempts to answer the plethora of questions by Jewish and Christian people raised by the developments described in the first section of the book.

Chapter Seven: What About The Arabs? explores the hidden brotherhood between Arabs and Jews as descendents of Abraham, the reasons for the current antagonism and the ultimate good news for the Arab nations. The next chapter addresses the question: Does the land still belong to Israel?, demonstrating that this is indeed the case.

In chapter nine, Finto looks at the question of the millennial reign of King Yeshua and the fullness of God's restoration of mankind and nature. Then he addresses the question of what Messianic Jews believe. The members of the early Church did not call themselves Christians; they were Jewish followers of Yeshua and they used the term The Way and were called Netzorim (Nazarites). It was only at the infamous Council of Nicea when the Gentile Church formally separated from the Jewish root.

The reasons why the Church should embrace her Jewish roots are the subject of chapter eleven. As Israel's younger brother, the Church is coming into an awareness of her Jewish heritage. The final chapter looks at the question of how Christians should respond. Finto calls Christians to unconditional love for all Jewish people and to support the state of Israel and those in the Diaspora. Guidelines are provided for believers to make a difference at this crucial time in world history.

Appendix A is a suggested Bible Reading Plan and Appendix B provides quotations from past generations of the saints on Israel and the Jewish people, including quotes from the marginal notes in the Geneva Bible of 1560, William Perkins (1579), Elnathan Parr in The Plain Exposition (1620), John Owens speaking before the House of Commons in 1649, John Brown in Exposition of Romans (1666), Robert Leighton in a sermon in 1642, Samuel Rutherford in a letter of 1633, Increase Mather in his book The Mystery Of Israel's Salvation Explained And Applied (1669), James Durham (1680), John Albert Bengel, Thomas Boston from a 1716 sermon, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Simeon and Charles Spurgeon (1855).

Appendix C provides contact information for various ministries like Beit Asaph, Beit Immanuel, El-Roii, International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, Kehilat HaCarmel, Maoz, Revive Israel, Tents Of Mercy and Tikkun. Websites and the names of contact persons are supplied.

Appendix D is a bibliography of recommended reading, including books by James W Goll, Keith Intrater, Dan Juster and David H Stern. To these, I would like to add the following works which I have found to be valuable and inspiring:

In Defense of Israel by John Hagee
Our Father Abraham by Marvin R Wilson
Ruth & Esther by Frank Morgan
Standing With Israel by David Brog
Why Care about Israel? by Sandra Teplinsky

Prophetic Timing
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-03
In matters of the heart, timing is crucial. In the fulfillment of Bible Prophesy, God's timing rules. Prayer is extended daily for God's will-- in His timing. But what is God's timing and how does one know? Don Finto has presented a compelling case for the Bible to be the core element in understanding modern times in God's Promise and the Future of Israel. Using Bible Prophesy as the wall map upon which present day history is pinned, Finto observes the unfolding of Israel's history as a pivot point upon which God's promises in scripture are coming to fruition. Five significant scenarios which have been taking place in this generation clearly align with God's promises for His Chosen People and with the period in history prophesied as "the last days." He likes to refer to these as intersections of God's promises with God's timing:

* The reestablishment of the State of Israel in 1948,
* The retaking of Jerusalem in the Six-Day War of June 1967,
* The opening of Jewish eyes to the message of Jesus,
* The revivals around the world, and
* The increasing awareness within the Church of the Jewish roots for the Christian faith.

Don Finto prefaces two purposes for the book: "to look at the intersection of promise and timing in our day, and to provide answers to questions about Israel and the Jewish people." His heart is clearly filled with love for God and His Chosen, and he is quick to inform the reader that the book is not just about Israel and the present days. "It is about a God who loves and comes to free us to be who we were created to be. It is about a forever-loving, covenant-keeping God." Israel is a clear reminder that God has not forgotten His People. In the same manner He has not forsaken the Gentiles who are essentially adopted into the family and are integral parts of His plan. To that extent the book is also about the reader. God calls each person to His purpose, and neither man nor woman can escape His call. "That God-shaped vacuum within you will know peace only as you rest in Him and He in you."

The second half of the book is dedicated to clarifying contemporary questions regarding Israel, their Arab brothers, their Christian brothers and how Christians should be responding to the challenges of this invigorating time. His perceptions and recommendations are profound, and his timing couldn't be better.

Creative and thought-provoking

Fuller makes creative use of ideas from political philosophy to come up with a model for science policy. Encapsulating the model is the principle of "the right to be wrong". This is central to the political tradition of "republicanism", which appears to have been sidelined in public debate by its better known rivals, liberalism and communitarianism. Fuller examines and rejects liberal (free market politics) and communitarian (identity politics) arguments for the organization of knowledge. The liberal ideology punishes individuals whose ideas and projects are made "wrong" by the market - not by taking away their freedom to exist but by making it harder for them to move on and acquire intellectual capital. Dissent is highly risky in the absence of a safety-net in the case of failure. The communitarian ideology would forbid the very expression of certain ideas; it places cultural hurdles for individuals to dissent from their community, which in the case of science, is the academic discipline that they are a part of. By contrast, republicanism both encourages free expression and recognizes that specific steps must be taken to provide more than a few risk-takers with the incentive for such expression. Relying as it does on large-scale state-funded resources, "Big Science" undermines the republican ideal, Fuller argues - failure becomes too costly. Now that the question of government versus private funding for science is regularly being debated in the media, Fuller's proposals detailed in the book provide an interesting and thought-provoking alternative to the usual positions. But apart from science policy people, those interested in political theory should also find this book worth a read.

Gutsy defence of open science

This book is much more politically minded than Fuller's usual stuff and he says things that have needed to be said for a long time - namely, that organised enquiry is threatened by both the political correctness brigade and grant racketeers. There are some pretty wild positive proposals in here as well, which include enabling people to gamble on alternative research programmes as a way of raising public interest (and perhaps even support?) in science. Definitely worth a look, even if with arched eyebrow. Certainly much gutsier than run-of-the-mill science studies.

A big-picture survey of the history and future of America's public lands
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-03
Martin Nie (associate professor of natural resource policy in the College of Forestry and Conservation, University of Montana) presents The Governance of Western Public Lands: Mapping Its Present and Future, a big-picture survey of the history and future of America's public lands, with especial attention paid to the contentious debate concerning how they should be used, and to what extent their wildlife should be protected. Examining both individual case studies (such as that of conflict over the forests in southeast Alaska) and broader general dilemmas of opposing viewpoints concerning national resource management, The Governance of Western Public Lands offers a balanced, serious-minded assessment of both present and future needs. "Experimentation could help ground some of the ideological debates discussed... We could use a few concrete cases to examine the virtues and drawbacks of trying something different on our public lands. Experimentation might thus give a strong shot of pragmatism to public land politics by rejecting sweeping generalities and abstract theorizing in favor of more practical experience and empirical knowledge. Instead of hypotheticals, we could focus our attention on the outcome of a particular project." Highly recommended.

Helpful for Grandfathers to Introduce the Bible to Grandkids
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-30
This book is ideal for grandfathers and grandchildren of the Christian faith. The book raises and answers basic questions about Christianity in both common language, and through quoting the Bible. The words are inspirationally enhanced by Andrew Wyeth-like drawings of grandparents and grandchildren in contemporary situations and of Biblical scenes.

"Grandpa, is there a heaven up so high/ A place to go when we will die?"

After the grandfather answers, he explains that he knows, because the Bible tells him so. The answer about heaven is from Revelation 7:16-17.

The other questions are about:

whether it's all right to cry when someone dear to us must die? (John 11:35);

why Jesus had to die (Ephesians 1:7-8);

why Jesus arose so soon after dying (John 14:2-3);

how does Jesus feel when we do bad things (Luke 15:10); and

do angels look over us (Psalms 91:11).

The book ends with:

"Grandpa, now I think I see/All that you've been teaching me."

"And when I wonder, I can look/In the Bible -- it is God's book." (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Doctrinally, the material is pretty conservative. For example, Jesus will call and save those who both believe in Him and are baptized. Some Christian groups teach that baptism is not necessary, as long as faith exists. I only mention this point so that you can judge whether or not the book fits in with the religious views that your family has.

For older children, grandpa can go on to explain more about the answers to these basic questions. I liked the way that the child is encouraged to seek her or his own answers in the Bible. That's a great way to lay a foundation for the importance of Sunday School and other Bible studies.

But best of all, grandpa can ask his grandchildren what questions they have about religious issues, and can help the grandchildren to learn how to find the answers in the Bible. That discussion can lead to many great hours talking and thinking about God's purpose and our roles in fulfilling it.

Seek spiritual guidance to follow the path God wishes you to pursue!

Green Plans outlines how to do integrated planning.

Green Plans is not a book about how bad things are today; it is a book about how good things can be tomorrow. It lays out the global environmental problems (and there are a lot of them) in a brutally honest manner, but it does not dwell on them. Instead, it focuses on what is being done, and what must be done on a global and national scale to alleviate our ecological dilemmas. Green Plans is about solutions, and although these solutions are at a national scale, the implementation must be done on an individual level. Herein lies the strength of Green Plans. Johnson writes with a contagious enthusiasm which leaves the reader with the knowledge and desire to help make a difference. Green Plans is a must read not only for planners and government officials but also for business leaders, environmentalists, and concerned citizens alike.

Green Plans are comprehensive, integrated and large-scale national environmental strategies. H. J. Johnson shows us what Green Plans are and what they are not. His examples of pioneering countries, The Netherlands, New Zealand and Canada are very convincing. He shows how those very different countries have developed innovative Green Plans, how they translated the concept of sustainability in practical strategies and action plans. His personal experience, as head of California's Resources Agency, from 1977 to 1982, in developing a comprehensive resource strategy, called Investing For Prosperity (IFP) gave him a basic understanding of Green Plans. He gives us a very good overall view of Green Plans, their ingredients for success, their principles and techniques and the new relationship needed between government and business. His clear vision for the United States should be read by all politicians and concerned citizens. It is still very actual. Of the many books published in environmental protection and sustainable development, this book should be on all bookshelves. And it is a real pleasure to read.

Peter Rachleff writes this narrative of the Hormel Strike from the prospective of the common man. His unique vantage into the Labor movement is both intriguing and compelling. He breaks with the standard fodder of analyzing union structure and instead delves into the plight of the "every-man" (i.e. the rank-and-filer). Excellent.

Rachleff, labor historian who "studies the past because he is interested in the future", writes the perfect and much needed antidote to Barbara Koppel's Academy Award-winning documentary about the Hormel Strike, a film that cast the P-9ers and their supporters as "hapless victims" engaged in a hopeless cause. As an academic AND an activist who personally participated in this struggle and became the chair of the Twin Cities P-9 Support Committee, Rachleff succeeds in putting things into their proper historical perspective, describing the betrayal of a community by a formerly paternalistic family owned corporation (and a DFL governor) and a rank-and-file by their own international union, but most importantly, he inspires all working stiffs by showing union democracy in action and the potential of a movement that motivates family, friends, and workers from around the country. The final chapter outlines the positive lessons drawn from these experiences and gives hope for the future of the labor movement. This is a must read for any union member and anyone thinking that they need a union.
