Penetrating Analysis

Review Date: 2008-03-17
The book opens with a history of the state of Iraq from its establishment after WWI to the present time. An understanding of this history is vital in coming to an understanding of the present difficulties facing the country. Two very salient points demonstrated persuasively by Iraq's history are that violence as a political instrument was institutionalized in Iraq long before the regime of Saddam Hussein. His regime was more a logical culmination of events which preceded it than a historical aberration. The second point relates to the primary reason for the development of institutionalized violence. The state of Iraq was constructed from disparate ethnic, religious and cultural groups to serve the political ends of the British at the time. This political expediency has lead to a state that has never been able to develop the sense of unity necessary to become a nation. Violence has been the primary means of keeping forces in line that could tear the state apart.

The history is followed by an examination of the perspectives of each of the three major groups that make up the state of Iraq - the Sunni Arabs, the Shi'a Arabs and the Kurds. Though this structure entails a certain amount of repetition of information from the first section of the book ( especially in the section on the Shi'a), it does help us understand the position of each of the three groups and what they stand to gain or lose as a result of different potential constructions of their future.

The third section of the book is devoted to examining the options available for the future of Iraq, including their potential positive and negative consequences and the likelihood of prevailing conditions allowing each option to become reality.

All three major groups in Iraq are shown warts and all. The book shows no favoritism in its analysis. The issues are analyzed with penetrating depth and the belief of the American government that the people of Iraq would welcome Western style democracy with open arms is scathingly laid bare as the ludicrously naïve position it is. A must read for all who truly want to understand the situation in Iraq.

Enjoyable to read and enlightening

Anderson and Stansfield have written a wonderful book that will appeal to both general readers and students. Its calm tone is a welcome change from a lot of the polemics about Iraq and it provides the reader with clear analysis of Iraqi history. My only complaint is that it is out of date. Hopefully a new edition will come out soon.

This is an interesting book. Anyone who is interested in an alternative to the right wing talk radio and tv news should seriously consider checking out the Thom Hartmann radio show opposite Rush Limbaugh weekdays at: thomhartmann dot com / showlisten.shtml

Whether democrat, republican, or indepedent, so many of the facts out there are completely ignored by the mainstream media and talk shows. This show is one strong example of an examination of the facts regardless of your political affiliation. I am not affiliated with the show in any way, just struck by the facts so many seem to ignore.

Future history of Iraq

Review Date: 2006-07-02
This book is structured in a very simple manner, following the history of this country:

First, the monarchy from 1920-1958;

Second, the revolution from 1958-1968;

Third, the Ba'ath Regime from 1968-1988;

Fourth, the wreck of Iraq from 1988-2003.

These chapters recount the history of Iraq from its beginnings after World War I--when the British created a country where none has existed before--with three parties holding very different views--Sunnis, Shiites, Kurds.

Each of these three groups is examined as the basis for speculation as to what is to come in the future. The authors wonder if Iraq might end up splintering into three distinct countries--Sunni, Shia, and Kurd. Questions emerge from this scenario: Is this desirable? Would the needs of all three groups be optimized in this manner? Will this encourage additional "ethnic cleansing"? Even beyond what we have seen? Would such a solution mark success--or failure--of the American intervention?

The future? America's role in that future? We cannot say at this point. However, it does appear that the American intervention never really understood the historical and cultural context. We can only hope that the Iraqi incursion turns out well. But it is also clear that Americans sadly misunderstood the context into which they entered. . . .

This book should have been required reading for those eager to enter Iraq, overthrow Saddam Hussein, and install a Western-style democracy. The book has three main points: (a) a history of Iraq from its flawed beginnings after World War I; (b) an analysis of each of the three main groups--Sunnis, Shia, and Kurds; (c) an examination of different scenarios that might illuminate the future of Iraq.

Each element is well done and provides context for the reader interested in something more than current events weith respect to Iraq. The end result of reading this book is to wonder at the arrogance of the war planners who apparently did not consider historical and ethnic and religious context as that critical for the outcome of the war. As one of the neocons once mentioned, reality is not so important to the United States; the country can create its own reality. To this point, the reality being created on the ground in Iraq is far different than it might have been had history acted as a guide.

Princess Tee'ah Dar was sick of enduring life in isolation as Vash Nadah tradition demanded. In a desperate bid for freedom, Tee'ah stole a starspeeder to begin a new life doing what she loved most, flying!

Ian Hamilton, an Earth dweller who was the heir to the Trade Federation and crown prince of the Vash empire, was deep undercover. He posed as Ian Stone, a trader of black market items. He was determined to bring the human people of Earth, the Vash people of Sienna, and all the people in the Federation together in peace! However, freak accidents and bad luck kept getting in the way. When his pilot died, Ian's crew was stranded on an awful world called Donavan's Blunder. Ian's critical mission would have failed right there, had a spunky pilot, Tee, not happened to appear. But neither Ian nor Tee told the other who they really were.

King Romlijhian, Tee's uncle, sent Gann Truelénne after the runaway princess. To do so, Gann had to hire Lara Ros, a master tracker. Gann and Lara clashed instantly, but are forced to work together if they were to succeed.

The galaxy would never be the same again!

***** In a word, "W-O-W!" And throw in a few "WOO-HOO's!" Why? Because Susan Grant has created an amazing universe with some very interesting characters to turn it upside-down! The story was well written and very believable. I could not help but cheer Tee's bravery. When the name "Susan Grant" is on the cover, readers best hold onto their seats because it's going to be one heck of a ride! *****

This book by Susan is my second, after reading Contact and enjoying that one I quickly found this one and Star Princess. I really enjoyed this one, Ian and Tee'Dar were great for each other. I also greatly enjoyed the secondary characters like Muffin and Lara. The KettaCat was also great. I also hope that she contines this series, and hope that she finds a mate for Klark Che's brother. I'm still trying to get all the families down, but she's going to have to continue the series. I'm now reading Star Princess and enjoying that book as well. I highly recommend thses books they're great. Please Susan write more Star series books.

Ian Hamilton has been the picture of propriety since his stepfather, Rom B'kah, named Ian his heir as King to the galaxy. Now, seven years later, Ian is fighting to keep Earth on good terms with the Vash. Wanting to pull out of the treaty that Earth signed seven years ago, Ian has set out to prove that it is best for the galaxy all around if they all stick together. With the return of Muffin, we are also introduced to a crew that will go straight to your heart. When Ian finds himself not able to keep a pilot, he hired 'Tee' whom he knows is running, but he doesn't know from what she's running.

Tee'ah Dar has fled her life as a Vash Princess. Never having the freedom to make her own choices, not even choosing the man she marries, Tee'ah is sick to death of her life as a pampered princess. The only thing she has ever done behind her family's back is learn how to fly, the one thing that she can't live without doing. When her father finds out, Tee'ah knows that she can't stay and keep suffocating under her father's rule, or her heart will slowly die. When she meets Ian, he seems a gift from God, or so she thought. What she didn't know was that he was the prince of the galaxy and if he knew who she was, he would return her before she could say 'Earthdweller'.

Tee'ah and Ian's story is truly heartwarming. All her life Tee'ah has been taught to put the needs of others above the needs of few. This once she has denied her heritage and fallen in love in the process. Ian has done everything he can to please Rom, and not end up like his father, who treats women as bad as he ever treated his mother. Ian has a rolemodel in Rom who he wants to be proud of him, but he doesn't think he could give up the love of his life.

Don't miss it!

Well when she ordered her own copy, testing the accuracy of the book she asked if she had met her soulmate and the answer was the person was in a foreign land! It blew her mind.

I bought this friend for my book and whenever we use it we get accurate results. It's very simple to use, all you have to do is hover your finger around a wheel of symbols and whichever one you are attracted to you look at the back of the book, find the page to turn to and read your answer. It seems a bit silly to have your finger point to an answer you need guidance on but it works. Although the questions that you can ask are a bit vague, the answers are not. I'd recommend this book for people who are not ready to divine with more complicated objects(ex: tarot, runes, iching) but for someone looking for simple straight forward answers.

This book is great. The answers are so wise and yet so gentle, working with the book is like getting the best psychic reading you've ever had. Last night I asked about a man who wants to come back into my life, "Is it a good idea to forgive him?" And the book answered, "Yes, perhaps, but this will not be the last time you have to be forgiving." I had a nagging feeling that was how this situation will play out, but I didn't want to admit it to myself. Now I will consider myself warned.

I do agree with one of the previous reviewers in that I had difficulty choosing an image at random using only my finger, but I solved this problem by using my pendulum with this book. I move the pendulum over the images until it starts circling, and eureka! There is the correct answer. You could also use dice, I suppose, since the book is big enough that the page with the images lies flat.

Highly recommended!

This book wasn't for me. The book is supposed to give you answers, but its not as easy as its said to be. The book works like this. You're given 100 questions to choose from, and the questions are written in such away that just about anything you could think to ask is indeed in there. Next you hold you hand over a wheel with a pictorial representation of each of the 13 witch's moons. Here's the tricky part. You're to hold the question in you mind and your finger is supposed to be attracted to one of the symbols at which point, following the clearly written instructions, you would go and look up the answer to your question. My problem with things such as these, are my fingers are never attracted anywhere. I've been studying and trying the craft for the past several years without success. However, if you're one of those people able to use these tools effectively, this book would probably be a spectacular find for you. Its other benefit is this, just like a ouiji board, it can be a very fun thing for people to do at a party or whatnot.

Tobin is a train and kids love trains. This little train teaches young children and those with social problems how to make friends. I recommend this book for classes of special education children or those with Asperger syndrome. It's really appropriate for any young child who is beginning to realize the world is a social place and skills are needed to become a member of a group where each person has a role and follows rules.

I also read the book to my students section by section as we learn the rules for making friends. This book is wonderful for many populations and can be used in so many ways. Women's Lives, Women's Legacies is a powerful tool to jump-start your own story and to share it with others. I found it thought provocing - answering questions about oneself, one's history, and future a wonderful communication tool. I enjoyed thinking about my naming process, secrets, values, and spirituality. The format of the book could be used in ways most suited to how I saw my own legacy. Being newly married I answered the questions for myself and then asked my husband about himself and his family-I learned new things about both. Whether you are married or single, have children or none, you will find your place is this beautifully written soul-searching book.

I am a writer, counselor, and teacher in my 60's, married for over 40 years, with grown children and one grandchild. So I can recommend this book especially to midlife and older women. This book can help us harvest the fruits of our abundant life experience and share them with a wisdom-starved world.

Through stories, commentary, and especially "reflection and writing" suggestions, this book guides us to contemplate aspects and details of our lives we may tend to take for granted, plumbing the rich depths of their meaning to us, our families, and the world. To name just a few examples: pregnancy, miscarriage, and birth; hanging clothes on a clothesline, specific childhood memories, family relationships, friendships, personal rituals, illness and healing experiences, personal response to world events.

I'm a woman who's been blessed with a long and varied life. I've always wanted to share my experiences with my nieces, and to offer them my hard-earned wisdom so that they might move into womanhood a little better informed than I was. I've also had an inner desire to be seen and valued by them.
The beautifully written and accessible WOMEN'S LIVES, WOMEN'S LEGACIES offers encouragement and serves as a guide so that I may begin to write my life and in the process, come to love and appreciate myself more fully. I love the personal stories and poetry in the book. As I read, I find myself moving to that spiritual place inside myself of loving my own being as well as all the women who've lived before me and those who will come after. This book is a celebration of and addition to the heritage of women.

"Legacy work is different from autobiography, memoir, life review, and genealogy not so much in what is written, but in our intent." ~ pg. 2

Women's Lives, Women's Legacies is a practical and inspirational guide. Through a systematic approach women can access their beliefs and bless the next generation with a healing journal of life and love. Divided into three sections, there is a process of discovery through the past, present and future.

How did you receive your name? This section is fascinating and then an example of how to write about your name is given to provide perspective and inspiration.

"Begin by thinking about the home you lived in when you were growing up." ~ pg. 68

Through childhood memories you can start to create a picture of how you became who you are today. This section includes memory triggers, which are especially helpful. You may want to go through photo albums while experiencing this section of the book. I found it useful to photocopy groups of pictures for reference and organized my pictures by year.

I loved the section on "Reflections and Writing" where you complete sentences like:

What I have loved most about my life is...
A fairy tale, children's story, fictional character, or book that has had an important influence on my life is...

This book is amazing in its ability to help you remember long-forgotten memories. There are sections for friendship, family, motherhood, sexuality, spirituality and secrets. Throughout this creative work, there are some startlingly beautiful poems and wise quotes. There are lists of descriptive words you can expand on like: playful, sensual, and imaginative.

While this book is designed for journal-style writing, I think all writers and poets will find this to be especially inspirational and enriching experience. What will you leave for the next generation to discover?

One of my most treasured items is a diary my mother wrote about my first year of life and she also wrote a diary about her world travels. She is currently interested in genealogy and I think this book might be useful for anyone researching and writing about family history. This book would be perfect for a mother-daughter project or as a project for a woman's group. Women's Lives, Women's Legacies is a gift in itself and this could open the door to many worlds you want to visit time and again.

Another masterpiece from the mind of Peter David, Future Imperfect is praised by fans and critics not only as some of his best Hulk work, but as some of his best work overall!

Brought forward in time ninety years and arriving in a post-apocalyptic future, the Hulk is beseeched by a group of resistance fighters to take down the being responsible for all the devastation. A being known only as "the Maestro."

But the battle won't be a simple one, for the Hulk soon learns that the Maestro is none other than a bizarre future incarnation of himself! Driven insane by decades of persecution, made even stronger by the free-floating radiation of the era, and having nearly a hundred years more experience than his younger self, the Maestro will rank as the Hulk's greatest challenge ever...... assuming he survives it.

Featuring art by George Perez and colors by Tom Smith, Future Imperfect is a modern-classic that belongs in every fan's collection.

I don't review very often - I think I've only done 4 or 5 reviews in all the time I've been shopping on Amazon. But I really wanted to review The Islander for a few reasons. One, this book was self-published and I feel it truly deserves all the "press" it can get, so that the word gets out. Two, it's a fantastic read. The premise takes two often-used ideas (a divided society following some disaster that destroys modern-day cities and society, and the classic Romeo and Juliet style love story) and twists them expertly into a tale that sucks you in. Primitive means of survival, advanced technology and supernatural powers exist together in this novel, and it's unlike any other I've read before. Three, I'm hoping that by getting the word out Mr. Whittlesey will grant us a sequel! I would love to read more about Mata and Galen. Read The Islander - you will not be disappointed!

I ain't a romance novel kind of guy but this one sure worked for me. The writing is so elegant in some places as to be almost poetic, in others it's crisp & smart. It works to draw you into the setting with prose that almost sings and then moves the story & develops the characters in a way that has you eager to see what happens next. And what happens next never disappoints.

I enjoy good writing & a good story will always get my attention but it's the connection I feel with the characters that makes a great read for me. This book has all three.

While it takes place in the future, the book addresses interesting themes that are very relevant in today's world. It prompted one of our best book club discussions ever!

Great read.

I was a little skeptical of reading a romance novel, but this book was a delight. It has mystery, humor, suspense, and a Sci-Fi edge that's fresh and clever. My book club raved about The Islander, and my husband loved it too. It's one of those books you just want to share with your mom, your best friend, and everyone else who loves to read. The well-structured plot draws you in and the clear descriptions give you a rousing picture of this radical prediction of the haves and have-nots of the world. I highly recommend you put aside any skepticism you may have about futuristic or romance books and expose yourself to this page turner today. It's a gem.

these cards are so much fun. they are astrology cards - the signs, planets and houses of the astrlogical chart. i find them more enlightening than tarot, but then again, i'm an astroger. but you don't have to be one to use these illustrated cards. messages are written right on the cards, and the book that comes with it is easy to read. you can even make up your own way to use them. it's a great gift for anyone, and a perfect gift for astrologers who want to try a lttle ESP along with their craft.

You will be amazed on many levels with these cards...

You will be amazed and astonished at the accuracy of the information given you on many levels. These cards will feel like a whack upside your head --or-- a much needed wake-up call. They are well worth the price...I have worn out one set so have purchased another. If you are like me you may find your mouth hanging open when you get some much needed clarification and information....stunningly accurate and amazing cards. Add then to your library you will be well pleased.

These cards are fun! Karma Cards are divided into three categories: Planets, signs and houses. They are beautifully illlustrated and come in a nice storage box. I enjoyed reading the guide book which explains how to use the cards and gives information on meanings. For example, in the planets section, it describes the symbol for the planet, what it represents and has Keywords, the planet's message, and warning. The really nice thing is that you don't have to be an expert in astrology to use these cards!

Here's what you do: Divide the cards into the three categories (planets, signs, houses)then shuffle each stack and turn them over and read the sentence that is formed by the words on each card. The cards can be used to determine 'outcome' or 'action'. Blue side is for outcome and red/orange is for action. There are 3 levels of answer that you can obtain, they are: Spiritual, Mental and Physical.

These are great cards. Fun and informative and really easy to use!

Innovative Oracle Deck Using the Planets, Signs and Houses of Astrology

"As The Celestial Mechanic, I devised a way to combine the wisdom of Astrology with a quick and easy technique for putting us in touch with our Higher Selves, and the result was Karma Cards." - From the companion book

With his characteristic Aquarian inventiveness, author Monte Farber marries the ancient art of Astrology with the accessibility of an oracle deck in Karma Cards. Designed so anyone can use them quickly and easily, Karma Cards are an unusual blend of oracle phrases with the Planets, Signs, and Houses of Astrology--36 cards in all.

Whether you seek to an answer an action question such as "What should I do about this job offer?" or an outcome question such as "What will be the outcome of this date?" Karma Cards are designed to answer both types of questions with clarity and accuracy. These reversible cards feature three words or phrases in blue to answer outcome-based questions with three words/phrases in red to answer action-oriented queries.

In addition, the six words/phrases on each card is divided in three realms: spiritual, mental and physical. Truly, Karma Cards covers all the bases!

Here's an example: let's say I want to inquire about a book I'm writing. I'd separate the Karma Cards into three decks: Planets, Houses, and Signs, shuffle and draw a card from each pile. (What's great about this deck is that the card backings display the category.)

So say I drew Saturn in Aquarius in the 7th House. I'd look at the blue section on each card, read the three sentences generated by the cards, and determine which sentence best applied to the situation according to my intuitive impression.

The Spiritual advice says "The maturity that brings genius to experiment with balance". The Mental advice says "Caution regarding the discoveries of cooperation". And lastly, the Physical advice says "Limits imposed resulting from the eccentricity of your partners."

Personally, I find it helpful to play around with both the red and blue sections because, in this case, I found the RED advice much more clear and appropriate. You could always experiment with Karma Cards to see which methods work best for you.

Along with the highly original construction of this particular oracle deck, I am also impressed with the 96-page guidebook to Karma Cards. The companion book is so rich with detailed yet practical information that those new to Astrology would get a solid introduction to this art just by reading it! Monte explains the nuts and bolts of an astrological chart, including house polarities, as well as the nature of each sign and planet--including the North and South Nodes.

If you had your astrological chart, you could get a good interpretation of the placements just by reading the card combinations and companion book. For example, looking at the chart of both my husband and son, I recognize that they both have their Moon in the 7th House. However, my son's Moon is in the sign of Sagittarius while my husband's Moon is in Aquarius.

To get some insight into those placements, I'd remove the Moon and 7th House cards from the deck, as well as the Aquarius and Sagittarius cards. Put them in a row, read what they say, and ouila!--I now have an overview of these particular placements.

If you're fascinated by Astrology or would like to know more, Karma Cards would make a great introduction to this art! If you love quick, easy, and clear divination tools, this deck makes a GREAT oracle. I've used it several times and found it be very accurate and highly insightful!

Lifeboat Sailors by Dennis Noble, a retired Coast Guard Senior Chief, is reading life as it is in the Coast Guard's world of Search and Rescue. I was stationed in Port Angeles for over 10 years and visited the Small boat Stations he talks about. As an Enlisted man with over 15 years, I have many friends at those stations and Dr. Noble tells it like it is. Of course this book was written pre-911 but still with all the growth for the Coast Guard and larger focus on Homeland Security, the Small Boat stations have had little change or given any more assets, but definitely have more patrol requirements. Dr. Noble's ideas and problems still remain. Search and Rescue has again taken back seat, this time to Homeland Security instead of Law Enforcement of the 80's. His prologue and epilogue tell the story of the tragic events of February 12 of 1997, when the 44 foot Motor Life Boat 44363 rolled and lost 3 of its four person crew. Dr. Noble happened to be a Station Quillayute River that night and provides us a first hand account of the events. It is a sobering tale surrounding his plight of the Lifeboat sailors in this excellent book. A must for Coasties new and old.

Been there done that..........

I was stationed at Station Willapa Bay , Washington from 1974 to 1977. The first time out on a 44ft MLB we had 25ft breakers to play with. What a ride. Spent time at the MLB School at Cape Disappoinment. Had the time of my life with the small boats.

Great book. A must read if you what to know about the Coast Guard search and rescue. All of Dennis books are great..........

This book offered a rare and informative insight into the world of US Coast Guard lifeboat stations and the sailors that man them. It gave great first hand insights into the day to day operations of a lifeboat station and a very informative history of the stations from the early days of the lifesaving service to the modern lifeboat station. A great read and a must for anyone in or wanting to be in the US Coast Guard!!!!!!

I was very impressed at this very well written book. Mr. Noble is retired from the Coast Guard and is very knowledgeable about the traditions and history of the finest life saving service in the world.

Mr. Noble is able to show both sides, good and bad, of the Coast Guard small boat stations.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Coast Guard history as well as someone wanting to join the Coast Guard.

Easy-reading, but very eye-opening and inspiring

Although the book was a nice, easy read, I was involved to the point where I couldn't put it down and wanted to know more about the Coast Guard. These men and women of the small lifeboat stations are true heroes. Thanks to Dennis Noble for telling their history and story. I was inspired so much by the desire to become a part of such an amazing tradition and responsibility that I visited my Coast Guard recruiter to join.

Tony Robbins has the gift of expressing concrete, easy-to-implement ideas that can make a difference in living a more fulfilling, successful life. Since listening to these CDs a few weeks ago, I have found myself spontaneously recalling some of the concepts he shared that have helped me face a challenge I was having at the time. In particular, the concepts of "Build a Relationship Bridge" for having patience with others during times of miscommunication has been very helpful. Also, the importance of carrying around a (properly-tempered) sense of "Certainty" in one's daily life as a pre-condition for success has been extremely useful. Some of his concepts seem self-apparent, but Mr. Robbins' charismatic delivery and excellent communication skills really drive them home.

I refrained from rating the set at 5 stars due to the multiple references to Mr. Robbins' seminars embedded throughout the recordings. However, in the end that was a small (additional) price to pay for the inspiration and extremely useful concepts that Mr. Robbins offers. I recommend this CD set highly.

I heard Anthony Robbins from Jay Abraham and Brian Tracy sales training series. Since most of our life struggles and challenges come our ability to deal with the problems that come into our life, I recommend this CD series for those of you who feel depressed, frustrated and uninspired.

The Live With Passion, Anthony Robbins CDs are amazing! After I listened to these CDs, I went ahead and bought $300 worth more of his CDs because what Anthony Robbins really brings back what I have learned in the past from great mentors, like Earl Nightingale, John Cummuta, Brian Tracy, Jay Abraham, Zig Ziglar and so on.

I am extremely excited to be able to listen to Anthony Robbins' wisdom and advice, because it has helped me to take charge of my life.

Must listen CDs!

Thanks Tony
