Concise Guide breaks down complex items and lists great examples for each topic. Under each new point of law, there is a concise explanation of the subject and the accompanying rule. I believe this book is essential to understanding Property law.

I knew I was in trouble when my professor said "You guys probably won't fully understand future interests unless you do some outside reading." I saw this at the bookstore and decided to give it a shot.

And I'm really glad I did. It breaks down a pretty complicated topic into bite-sized pieces, and is very well organized. The early chapters are very short (only a few pages) and really only cover the vocabulary. This gives you a chance to really get to know the full meaning of the words (many of which have different meanings than they do in common usage, so it's important to be careful) before you get into the more complicated details.

Each chapter also has a short outline summary of the chapter at the end, which is very useful for quick review. There are also lists of vocabulary and plenty of examples that explore the nuances of the rules. In some chapters the lists of examples are longer than the introductory explanation section!

This compact publication is just the ticket for those new to the world of work. It offers great practical advice for moving your career forward regardless of what field you are in. It is very readable, logical and right on target. Lots of helpful hints and useful strategies to help the beginning professional get a better grip on how to be more successful and also how to be a better employee! I recommend it to anyone just starting out in a new career or for those who have been out of the labor market for a while and are a tad rusty in how best to acclimate themselves to a very competitive workplace. For several years now I have been reading these three great men. They have been trying to explain it as I have been trying to understand. I now understand. I understand that we have to listen to these geniuses' Genesis to a new way of consciousness.

This is a dialogue between three spirits. Inter-resting that it is dialogue, in the true sense, but between three. And so it spreads.

I am only a simple mother waiting to be a grandmother but I can COOK! You bring great food for thought and new recipies for the family of man.

Peter Russell has a new book out available at his site...go there...I did and plan to read it. I consider all these men as Great Chefs and I am following instructions to the Cook.

Consequences, (Morality, Ethics, and the Future) by James H. Burtness provides a window into parsing aspects of Elian Gonzales issues, the Supreme Court's recent appeals, just war?, fidelity in marriage, and handles on church conflicts. Although he prefers one of four ethical positions, namely "consequentialism" he measures high with this author in another of these four, "character ethics". A half century ago he spurred me to high "A" efforts in learning Greek at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is still parsing Greek. "Be perfect" is an ambiguous form in Greek, ...more appropriately, ...future indicative..."You will be perfect." p.144. He's a durable servant, again helping the reader reorder personal and social life, linking belief and behavior. He often soars to literary materials involves an attempt to reconceptualize in the here and now the text that was contextualized in the there and then." p160. The reader will be traveling with him over 20 centuries of thinking about Christian ethics. This is a must book to help a person get back on the road responding to God's calling-the consequences being sharing in accomplishing God's goals for mankind. END

Balanced introduction to the discipline of ethics

I would highly recommend this book as an introduction to Christian ethics both for the student and the layperson. Burtness succeeds in making this book both informative and accessible, being neither ponderous nor condescending.

This book contains a balanced overview of different approaches one might take to developing a Christian ethic. He does have his own perspective, but he declares it at the outset and scrupulously avoids unfairly treating other approaches. When he does more fully develop a teleological ethic (the ethical school he identifies with), he does it as an example of the way one *might* form a Christian ethic based on *one* of several valid approaches to doing ethics. He looks at every approach sympathetically.

This book is ideal for anyone looking for an introduction to the field of Christian Ethics. The book is informative, balanced, accessible, and interesting.

Angelica's Future School

Review Date: 2001-06-06
Man's worst mortal fear is the fear of facing an unknown future. As the world is changing at a maddening pace, teachers may feel themselves particularly vulnerable. Chartered with the honourable yet onerous task of preparing the future lawyers, doctors, architects or economic pillars in their communities, teachers cannot escape the duty to try to create the "future schools" campatible with the new mode of living in a global village. From the very first pages, I was made a captive reader. Through the eye's of the five-year old Angelica, I saw graphically how the evolving scenes would require the rude awakening of many education workers to build a new vision for education. Fortunately, the author Hedley Beare was quite forthcoming about definitive approaches that teachers could adopt. Unlike authors who dodge the real issues and couch their recommendations in a nest of "ifs", the author overtook the gloomy preamble to paint a plausible frame for action. In summary, this book is highly recommended for educators whose crystal ball is cloudy as they are plunged into the unknown known as the knowledged base society.

"Creating the future school"- Hedley Beare

While many parents, teachers and students revel in the static conservatism of education as we have come to know it, Hedley Beare sounds the clarion trumpet blast of a paradigm shift. Beare's creative analysis of future trends is not new but his contribution is that he makes great sense in translating those trends to school operations.

The story of Angelica, the future's child, personalizes the changes that will affect the children of this Century and it reiterates the coming globalisation that will be a reality to this next generation.

The section on teachers as knowledge workers emphasises what has long been ignored by writers in the business management sector. If we are to become a learning society then we need to re-examine the role of teachers and schools in our society. Beare reminds us that with all teachers (in Australia) holding four year degrees from universities, teaching is moving from a craft to a profession.

The book is well worth a place in school administrators' professional reading lists. And, the theses Beare proposes will help principals get their heads around the big picture and the new world of opportunities.

Exceptional roadmap towards achieving your dreams

Wonderfully written!! This is a book you will actually "use" because this is not a "passive", leisurely, read. As the reader, you will become thoroughly involved in charting the course your life will take. Visualizing and putting to paper, "with a pencil on 3X5 index cards", your aspirations revives the mind and rekindles in all of us what it is we really want and why. Why a pencil? To modify and update your goals. And the index cards? Easy way to catalog, reference and review them. For anyone interested in attaining their goals, this book is an excellent source in getting you pointed in the right direction. Reading and applying the principles within will make the journey worthwhile.

A Blueprint Not Just for the Research University
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-06
Frank Rhodes was a distinguished leader of higher education when he led Cornell. He set standards of excellence for institutions but equally he set standards that other presidents should follow - without personal agrandizement.

He argues that this book is addressed to the AAU (American Association of Universities - the 50 top research universities) members - but that is not accurate. What he does in a concise and readable text is explain two things. First, he explains several issues that higher education rarely is able to explain in clear terms. Yet, he does it with grace and elegance. Second he offers a list of changes that would make higher education an even more important resource.

If you are interested in higher education governance or finances or the contributions of research from universities - this is a good book for you. If you want to understand the role of the faculty, again this is a good resource.

Steve Sample's book on Contrarian Leadership - is also excellent but focussed more on the leader. This covers, both leaders and institutions, without flinching from the tradition of shared governance. Compared to the post presidential books like Derek Bok's book on Affirmative Action or Jim Duderstadt's book on leadership - Rhodes book is much more useful and much more concise.

Make This Book Higher Education's Goals for a Real Future

Review Date: 2002-02-09
Frank Rhodes' book should be purchased by every educator concerned about the future of higher education in this nation. This book cuts through 200 hundred years of ivory tower mentality and reminds educators that if higher education is not revolutionized soon, it will be replaced. Rhodes quotes noneother than the prescient Peter Drucker, who believes that, "Thirty years from now the big university campuses will be relics...Universities won't survive. It's as large a change as when we first got the printed book...Already we are beginning to deliver more lectures and classes off-campus via satellite or two-way video as a fraction of the cost. The college won't survive as a residential institution. Today's buidlings are hopelessly unsuited and totally unneeded...I consider the American research university of the last 40 years to be a failure. The great educational needs of tomorrow are not on the research side, but on the learning side." To back up what he believes, Rhodes examined 125 major research universities and offers a blueprint for a future where learning is truly universal and useable. This is a profound book that is a must replacement to the 40 year-old, The American College and University: A History, a tome that has been used to train higher education administrators. Rhodes' views, while controversial, are refreshingly presented in a fast-paced and delightful book.
