The price is the best thing about this bookOK, maybe the title of this review is unfair. Overall a nice book but it is a little too cute for me with sections labeled "Wow! I Got One!", "Oh No! I've Been Rejected!", and "Grants, Grants, Everywhere!". I do like the author's emphasis on a team-based approach to proposal writing which I have seen used to great success but it is too light on the stuff that seems to really matter like writing strong goals and objectives and a persuasive statement of need. This is a book I would probably recommend to someone in he field of education who was involved in the grant writing process but not the one who is actually writing the proposal. For this, I recommend Carlson's "Winning Grants Step by Step," or Bauer's " A Teacher's Guide to Winning Grants."

National Guide to Funding for Elementary and Secondary Education

This 725-page volume reports on 6,331 grantsThere's no doubt about it. Seeking foundation, corporate and other charitable support for elementary and secondary education is tough. Often grants are sought by teachers, parents and volunteers, who have little or no real background in seeking such contributions. Even professional grant seekers employed by a school can be daunted in matching the needs of the client to the right foundations. Yet, elementary and secondary schools succeeded in attracting more than $568 million in grants in 1995. If so much money is being given, how can your school get its fair (or unfair!) share? One important place to begin the search for such grants is the Foundation Center's National Guide to Funding for Elementary & Secondary Education, 4th Edition. This 725-page volume reports on 6,331 grants in support of a variety of programs, including vocational, bilingual, and special education, curriculum development, and programs for gifted or minority students. Entries include such useful information as foundation type, assets, expenditures, grants paid and number of grants made during the year, and so on. In fact, each entry contains 34 items of information. So essential is this volume for those seeking grant dollars for elementary and secondary schools that I cannot imagine proceeding without it.

Written to serve as the starting point for grantseekersThe National Guide to Funding for Women and Girls was written to serve as the starting point for grantseekers looking for foundation, corporate and other charitable support for women or girls. This latest edition, the fourth, contains 978 entries, including 794 grantmaking foundations, 66 direct corporate giving programs, and 188 public charities (including 74 community foundations). Entries were selected on the basis of their stated fields of interest, or though actual grants of $10,000 or more. The volume also reports 4,306 grants, representing nearly $310 million including grants to health care, education, human services, the arts, and more. This volume will not only be valuable to USA-based charities and causes focusing on women and girls, but to non-USA charities, as well. The fourth edition adds a new section in grantmaker descriptive entries identifying any international giving interests of an organization. The index has been substantially expanded over prior editions, and now describes the countries, continents, and regions in which grantmakers have giving interests. Indeed, the index has expanded from a few dozen such entries to more than 200.

Thumbs up from The Doyle Report.comDespite the best horticultural efforts, money does not grow on trees. Schools know this all too well. Budgets are tight and the demands are high. Technology investment is one of these demands, and it's a pesky one. Technology changes how we work, and keeping up with these cultural changes requires investments. So if not the trees, from where do the resources come? David Bauer's TECHNOLOGY FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS (Feb. 2000) begins to tackle the problem.
The real question is not about sources, but the organization required to utilize and create the sources. To that end, TECHNOLOGY FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS can be divided into seven bailiwicks:
Developing technology support groups
Winning grants
Obtaining corporate funding
Pursuing government funding
Developing individual support
Selecting the most effective fund raising strategy
and mapping winning strategies
Each section reviews successful strategies to realize the chapter's goals and provides useful checklists to keep track of progress. The book comes with a disk that holds electronic versions of the checklists that can be reproduced and tailored to the schools specific needs. ....

No one updates this book!Scholarship leads given in this book are a joke. Some institutions don't exist anymore, some have moved. We pay a lot of money for this book in order to get current and correct information. No one bothers to update this book apparently.
Well worth the priceThe directory provides a wealth of information on various funding sources, and is indexed by funding focus (e.g. undergraduate, discipline-specific, state of residence, etc.). Easy to use if a bit bulky and expensive.

A waste of money if you are an undergraduate.I bought the book hoping it would help me find a way to study in the US because I am not wealthy and can't afford the extortionate fees of universities in the US. The book was more useful for people who are looking to study as a post graduate. As an undergraduate nursing student looking for full funding, it was pretty useless.
A Very Useful ResourceThe book was quite useful and I'm so glad I bought it. It features detailed descriptions of fellowships, grants and scholarship for both undergrad and post-grad studies. I especially like the way it categorised the awards, i.e. by field of study, academic level, average number and amount of award, destination instution among others. All these help to make searching easy and productive. Though I'm not yet succesful at getting support, I have no doubt that I will. I highly recommend it for international students wishing to study in the U.S.

Don't buy this book!!The authors don't know anything about funding new ventures. The sample businessplan that is included should never get any funding from somebody that's not a complete idiot. After I bought this book I will never buy a book that doesn't have a customer commet.
A lot of blank pages & white spaces for a vacuum-filled bookBy reading the hard-cover, you should think (as I have thought !), this book would transform you in an investor-catching guy. Too bad... Definitly, there is NOTHING in this book, excepted perhaps some money-funding system (the book...)for the authors ! Please, trust me : don't buy ! You'll save your bucks.

Don't Buy This Book!!!!!I just finished reading this book in bed. I tossed and turned for an hour after finishing and had to get up and write this review. As a book lover and owner of most film books printed I can say that this book not only was worthless, but so much so that it made me angry. I'm still angry. You would think that after 40 years of making movies that Mr. Rebane would have something to lend to aspiring producers other than a misleading title and a principal that, while not always followed, is common sense. "Film Funding 2000"? It should be called, "You'll Learn Nothing About Film Funding". I'm not supposed to give away the punchline, etc. in my review, but I can't be knocked for giving away what's not there. THERE IS NO POINT TO THIS BOOK!!!. The author has written a book that would lead one to think that you might get some insight into how to get a film funded. Not going to happen. There is nothing here that even the most fledging of filmmakers wouldn't already know of. Also, if he or she doesn't know the principals in this book it's because they have no common sense and wouldn't be reading this book anyway.
Lest you think I'm just a bitter wanna-be you should know that for 5 years I've been an indie filmmaker with one produced and distributed feature (albeit not a very successful film) under my belt. I am always looking for a book to charge me up or give me one more bit of information that I might not have thought of or that others haven't mentioned before. There is nothing like that here. No positive images or support. No real knowledge. Beginners will get nothing from this book and professionals will be called out of their slumber to get up and write a scathing review.
Furthermore, the book is 230 pages total, but 100 pages are for the appendix which contains a couple of documents that you can get on the internet or in dozens of other great books on filmmaking. Furthermore, furthermore, of the 125 or so remaining pages the reader is faced with most chapters that run between 1 and 3 pages on average. There are soem chapters that aren't even an entire page and I'm not kidding. Not much here and it costs a ton.
Shame on you Mr. Rebane for taking advantage of the dreams of would-be filmmakers. I've never shamed anyone, but you deserve it and I must be angry.
(Note to Amazon: I have ordered thousands of dollars of merchandise from you [no, really] and I've always been happy, but the fact that such a messy piece of work can make it's way to customers and at such a high price is ridiculous. I know you can't screen the thousands of books that come through and that it is all based on public opinions, but I would hope that some how you will drop this book from your site....there now I feel better and can go back to bed and maybe get some sleep). Thanks for listening... Jason.
