This is more advanced book for CFD (comparing with the volume I). More specifice topics were talked about in this book. It is a very good book for beginner, also a good reference.

Excellent books for entering the C.F.D feild
The reader should be familer with the general techniques of Computaional Science. This book does an excellent review of thoes basic techniques which are basic for computational fluid dynamics. I just finished reading it and am Now starting on the second volume. I am doing a computer Simulation of Ship wakes and this book is I think nesessary reading before a researcher dives in to the mass of research papers published in this field.

A fantastic introduction to convex analysis and optimisation
Convex Analysis and Minimisation Algorithms by Urruty and Lemarechal is a gentle but comprehensive introduction to finite dimensional convex analysis. This book is part of Springer's series on Comprehensive studies in Mathematics.

Volume I deals with convex analysis (convex sets, convex functions, sublinearity and support functions, subdifferentials of convex functions and minimization algorithms for smooth convex functions) and the companion volume II deals more with nonsmooth optimization and bundle algorithms to solve such problems. The theory is developed rigorously with many intriguing examples and figures to illustrate important concepts. As the authors mention in their introduction the minimisation algorithm suggested by Einstein "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler". The two volumes are fairly comprehensive (and as a disclaimer the contents are by no means elementary, and will require a sustained effort on the part of the reader).

One can then take on the likes of Rockafellar and Wets' "Variational Analysis" and Borwein and Lewis' "Convex Analysis and Nonlinear optimization, two other recent works in convex analysis and optimization.

This will save you in p.chem
This book is well writen, well defined, compleate and aside from being mahematicall well defined gives all the qualitative understanding you need to get by. I suggest you use this to replace your confusing and overly dense spectroscopy chapters in any intro to P.chem book.

Very helpful and deep, it's really a fundamental one
Being an undergraduate student of the Kazakh National State University, Almaty, Kazakstan, CIS, Faculty if Physics, I dealed with spectroscopy. This book was easy to read, perfectly composed and contained all information I need for my research. It stressed upon physical sence of the phenomena and had good illustration material.

I must say that I've read it in Russian. The year of edition was 1985 approximately.

I strongly recommend this book to people with or without physical background, making researshes on any kind of spectroscopy(IR,UV,NMR).

Perfect Reference on Spectroscopy
The undergraduate physical chemistry lab course required us to perform at least 2 experiments on spectroscopy. Experiments could be drawn from infrared spectra, electronic-vibrational absorption spectrum, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility of transition metal ions in solution.

While introductory physical (quantum) chemistry course only gives students an overview of spectroscopy and its applications, this book provides excellent information about different types of spectroscopy and their usages in laboratory. Many will find it very useful to consult this book before proceeding on spectroscopy experiments. It will also serve as a reference tool for practicing chemists and professionals who need a refresher in the subject.

It covers basic spectroscopy techniques, vibrational spectroscopy, rotational spectroscopy, infrared, Raman on diatomic molecules and polyatomic molecules. One great tool.

Clear introduction to molecular spectroscopy
I took my first Graduate laser spectroscopy course, and I used Dr. Struve's Fundamentals of Molecular Spectroscopy as a supplement. I studied his text more frequently than the assigned text. I would not have survived without it.

A Very Friendly Textbook On Signals and Systems
I know Kamen's textbook on signals and systems since theedition of INTRODUCTION TO SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS published byMacmillan-USA in 1990. It was a very clear textbook and now in this second edition of his new text on FUNDAMENTALS OF SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS :WITH MATLAB EXAMPLES , professor Kamen's writing style become much more clear than ever. There are many textbooks on signals and systems in the market but Kamen's textbook is the unique with a very special friendly approach which makes the students very confortable with the subject on signals and systems. I really recommend this text for every one who wants to get a sound proficiency on signals and systems at the undergraduate level. It is the best.

The plainest language on Signals and Controls I've seen!
The plain, unfettered language of this book demystified Signals and Controls for me. The examples and applications in MATLAB are direct and meaningful. This book will be the first place I look for information about signal processing in the future.

Great for the professional but a 'must' for the novice.
Wanting to diversify my portfolio I figured I needed this book. Oh, how right I was. This book gives the reader a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of precious metals which in itself would be well worth the price paid but it also provides great psychological insights into why precious metals gain and loss their luster during times of tumultuous markets. The author has an easy to understand and witty style that makes it a pleasant research vehicle. Good luck to all, Todd

An excellent and timely analysis of precious metals.
THE NEW PRECIOUS METALS MARKET provides the most comprehensive and up to date analysis of precious metals currently available. This is a no-nonsense and objective review of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium as investments, trading vehicles, inflation hedges, and plain old commodities. Philip Gotthelf does not provide the typical sugar coated view that "nothing is as good as gold." Instead, he details realities facing precious metals which include digital photography's impact upon silver, new gold extraction technology, technical cycles, and even stock investing.

This book avoids complexity and gets down to business. Why should you consider precious metals in your portfolio? The answer in the book is a surprise to many. Philip Gotthelf does not take the traditional line that these metals are good investments. Instead, he gives pragmatic reasons why investors should avoid accumulating hard inventories in the "new economic environment." He covers metals as monetary instruments. He touches upon scandals like Bre-X and how investors can avoid getting caught.

The book is full of charts and illustrations that are clear and easy to understand. In a time when economic uncertainty is at a peak, this book is essential for anyone considering gold, silver or the other metals as investments.

Eco-Socialism or Eco-Capitalism?: A Critical Analysis of Humanity's Fundamental Choices

An unique vision of a sustainable future
"Eco-Socialism or Eco-Capitalism" by Saral Sarkar offers an unique vision of a sustainable future. Mr. Sarkar was born and educated in India and wrote the book while residing in Germany, where he has been active in the Green Party and related political and environmental movements for many years. The author's education, work and multi-cultural life experiences combine to produce a nuanced, thoughtful and mature work that should intrigue readers interested in political theory and the environment.

Mr. Sarkar believes that the ecology movement must recognize that socialism, not capitalism, offers the best hope for society to realize the state of "biocentric equality" that will be needed to secure human rights and stabilize the environment. Central to the author's analysis is the "limits to growth" paradigm espoused by Green Economics thinkers such as Herman Daly, which posits that economic growth achieved through increasing natural resources consumption can not continue indefinitely. But the author goes well beyond Daly and his peers by insisting that a steady state economy (SSE) can not succeed in a free market capitalist system; rather, it can only be viable in the context of socialism.

Mr. Sarkar does not toss the word "socialism" around lightly. In fact, he devotes two chapters extensively studying why socialism failed in the USSR. In short, Mr. Sarkar posits that environmental constraints combined with widespread moral degeneration led to a crisis that could not be resolved by the USSR's privileged political/bureaucratic class. While many might argue that the USSR failed on a number of other levels as well, I found the author's analysis credible and well-supported by the evidence. Importantly, the analysis provides several take-aways that are later incorporated into the author's proposed eco-socialist theory, such as the importance of morals to the building and maintenance of a well-functioning society.

Mr. Sarkar examines the natural resource base that the present world economy depends upon in order to ascertain if new technologies might be able to offer us hope in overcoming scarcity. The author surveys various energy sources and technologies to provide detailed answers to this question. He also critiques the fashionable view that the contemporary "dematerialized" information society is less environmentally destructive than yesterday's industrial society. Mr. Sarkar's thoughts that follow from this discussion about what must be done in the face of the world's dwindling stock of natural resources might appear to some to be commonsense but are nonetheless well worth reading. Indeed, the author's candor is refreshing and welcome, especially when compared with the media's usual message of consumerism without end.

Mr. Sarkar presents his vision of how an eco-socialist society might succeed and discusses the notion of progress in the final two chapters of the book. The author believes that eco-socialism can rightly fuse the moral strengths of socialism with the pragamtism of the ecology movement to create a society that is free from greed, war, exploitation and rascism. This is achieved by embracing policies that are widely acknowledged in Leftist circles, including: full employment, women's rights, pay equity, limits on private enterprise, greater emphasis on the local production of goods and services, increased democratic participation, and so on. But the author also makes a very strong argument for controversial measures such as the rationing of consumer goods, strict controls on population growth, and more. Mr. Sarkar's justification is that the inconveniences created for some will be more than offset by the creation of a harmonious, peaceful and stable planet for all.

As wars around the world intensify due to struggles over increasingly scarce resources such as oil, Mr. Sarkar's opinion that humanity must eventually choose "either eco-socialism or barbarism" may well be true. To that end, I highly recommend this outstanding book to those who might be interested in reading thought-provoking ideas from an uniquely visionary, compassionate and intelligent author.

Fundamental Concepts in Modern Analysis

A very nice overview and foundation for nonlinear analysis
My collaborator Gary Sandine, and I are using this text as the basis for an introduction to nonlinear analysis that we are teaching at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The course is being attended by technical staff members and graduate students. I like the book because it has all the right topics, assumes little in the way of prerequisites, and is small in size.

We are not simply presenting the book in the course. We are creating our own notes, adding various variations, as well as giving a large amount of intuitive background and connection to how two mathematicians think about those subjects in their daily practice. This said, we find the book to be very good for self study or as a backbone for a course.

A note of "correction": His definition of sequentially compact is not the standard one (see page 40) but this is a minor "flaw" ... one should compare with George Simmons "An Introduction to Topology and Modern Analysis", which makes a good supplement to a course taught or studied out of Hansen's book.

All in all, I would pick this book again for such an introductory course and I would recommend it very strongly to anyone wanting to begin the study of nonlinear analysis. Mastery of the subjects covered gives the student a big start on any follow up courses such as "Applied Functional Analysis" or "Differentiable Manifolds and Riemannian Geometry" or "Differential Topology and Singularities of Mappings" (which in fact are planned for the next couple of years). For someone not taking follow up courses, the book should make the ideas in papers using the tools of nonlinear analysis fairly accessible especially with a little explanation by an expert. I give the book 5 stars because of the choice of topics, the clarity and the (short) length.

This book is an excellent introduction to real analysis. It is written in a fairly informal style which allows the topics to sink in. If I were a student new to analysis, I would recommend buying this book along with one of the more formal texts (ex. Rudin).

A must for those majoring in Mathematics!
Fundamentals of Abstract Analysis was our prescribed text in my Advanced Calculus class. I got hold of this book from our college library. The way Gleason presented topics form this course was brilliant. Although this course is not a basic calculus course, this is a must for mathematics majors who wish to pursue masters and doctorate degrees in the future. This book is recommended for students with a more mathematical maturity than that afforded by the usual freshman-sophomore courses in calculus. And one excellent way to gain such maturity is through a beginning course in linear algebra, although it is not a pre-requisite for the book, but of an advantage. This book tackles the "structure" of calculus, wherein theorems are presented in much greater depths and goes "behind the scenes" of the theorems in calculus. I recommend this book for undergraduate math majors and graduates as well.
