Just the Facts...

I just got the book last night, but so far it is great. I know very little about investing, just that I wanted to know more about Mutual Funds before I try to pick one. It has a lot of facts but isn't dauntlingly dense. There are lots of charts, definitions in the margins as well as a full glosary and plenty of room in the margins for notes. I choose this book over the For Dummies book because I didn't want to read an extra 200 pages of stories.

"The Goodriches" is a scholarly book about the impact of the Goodrich family's lives and the influence they exerted, not only locally, but nationally and internationally. Events chronicled in the book are clearly the work of extensive research. Sheds light on an important period of Indiana history. A must-read for fans of well told historical accounts!

Outstanding, well researched and presented.

This fascinating book was written by Jurate Rosales nee Statkute (a Lithuanian born author raised in Venezuela) and first published in the Spanish language in Caracas, Venezuela in 1998 and 1999. In a Venezuelan library Rosales had stumbled across a copy of the "Chronicle of Goths" written by Spanish King Alfonso the Wise in the 13th Century. Immediately she saw that the Chronicle contained a very old description of the history of the Baltic nations prior to their arrival in Spain in the Fifth Century. Rosales described her findings in two sold out editions commended by scholars of Spanish history. The author was urged to publish the work in English by Ed Tarvyd of Santa Monica College in California. The translation was done by Danute Rosales in Caracas and revised by Tarvyd in Santa Monica. A Lithuanian-American engineer, Alexander Jankunas, later offered to sponsor the English translation and donated funds to have it published by the Vydunas Youth Fund in Chicago. My mother, who was born in Lithuania, found out about the book in the Lithuanian language newspaper DRAUGAS and later in the English language magazine LITHUANIAN HERITAGE. She was so enthralled by it that she recommended to me that I read it. After finishing it today I can see why--the book is a REAL treasure and I would highly recommend it to both historian and linguist alike--not to mention the lay person of Baltic/Gothic descent!

Brilliant Analysis of Federal Budget As Influence Device
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-27

This absolute gem from 1989 should be updated and republished. I have resurrected it in relation to my reading on federal budgeting and the dangers of the deficit spending now in vogue in Washington (2002).

This is the best book I have read on the strategic aspects of the federal budget--needed reforms, key issues in allocation policy, using the budget to stabilize the economy.

Where the book excels is in its analysis of how the federal budget should be used to steer private sector outlays--as Osborne and Gaebler suggested, we must steer rather than row--guide the private sector rather than use taxpayer dollars for direct products and services.

In his discussion of priorities, the author focuses heavily on the lack of investment in education and the resurrection of education both public and private. As we enter the 21st Century largely ignorant as a Nation (of external realities, not at individuals), I cannot help but think that the time has come for the public to take charge of "political economy," and begin actively setting forth its priorities. Just this week, in The Washington Post of 27 February 2002, David Ignatius suggests that Washington has turned its back on the Nation. Seems to me that's pretty dangerous, but if the Nation allows itself to be ignored by Washington, then we have the government--and the federal spending priorities--we deserve.

Best investment a small nonprofit can make...

Review Date: 2006-02-28
Joan Flanagan's The Grass Roots Fundraising Book is the best investment a small nonprofit can make. Full of solid, practical advice, it's helped thousands of grass roots groups take control of their futures by learning how to leap off the fundraising cliff and generate the resources they need.

I logged on today looking for a copy to give to a community group I'm working with, and had Amazon had it, it would have been the tenth or twelfth copy I've bought over the years since it was published. If you need it, keep looking. It's still out there.
