THE definitive text on wildlife law
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-07
The first edition of this work, published in 1977, was considered a landmark in legal scholarship. Subsequent editions have lived up to that standard. The present edition (3rd) is expanded to cover related laws in the United States that impact wildlife. The organization of this book follows an historical view up until the 1970s. From that point the book follows the development of wildlife law in response to the changing cultural values of "the environmental era."

There is little concerning wildife law in the United States that is not covered in this volume. The exception is the myriad of state laws, a task that would have consumed ten times the amount of space. All in all, this is a standard reference in the highest sense of the word. I have used this as a text in not only wildlife management classes, but also environmental ethics and environmental policy. The book is that useful. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in wildlife and wildlife law.

Comprehensive introduction into the world of Private Equity
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-31
This new book gives a very good insight and overview into the world of private equity for the interested student and practitioner.

In fact, it starts from the very basics, explaining the market and the nature of PE fund investments, presenting the various data providers in the market, and goes on to tread very complex issues like state-of-the-art forecasting & monitoring portfolios, important legal issues, advanced cash flow modelling and risk assessment techniques, funds of funds, CFOs and secondaries.

The authors are both highly renowned experts in the PEF industry, Mr. Weidig as a consultant with various publications regarding funds and funds-of-funds, and Mr. Grabenwarter as head of division for Venture Capital Operations at the EIF.

Both combine theoretical understanding with years of experience in the PE funds market, as well as hands-on experience with building risk management systems for this specific type of financial investment - a combination rarely encountered in the world of PE funds!

Experience-based review of the use and influence of PPAs
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-18
Can the Poor Influence Policy? is a clear and authoritative review of experience with the major new phenomenon of Participatory Poverty Assesssments (PPAs). Caroline Robb documents the scale and depth of a quiet revolution in thinking and practice with profound implications for development professionalism and policy. She shows how participatory methods and approaches can enable poor people to analyse their realities and express their priorities, and how these can differ from those assumed by policy makers.

It should be read by all who are concerned with policy and practice to reduce poverty. It should inspire many more Governments, donors and NGOs to initiate PPAs and to disseminate and act on the results.

Can the Poor Influence Poverty?, published as it is by the World Bank, is a landmark book. It shows how PPAs have spread, and the potential they have to influence policy. After this book, things should never be the same again, for there will be less excuse than ever for ignoring the realities and priorities of those who are poor and disadvantaged.

The Author knows that Faith-based work is not just pie-in-the-sky but the accomplishment of the work is based on concrete skills. This is a great book to get the skills you need to make a difference where you are. Let's face it -- there are not many places you can go to learn how to do faith based work -- so this book is worth the investment!

It's not just for the old!--Ways to enrich life
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-26
Paul Tournier has written a book designed to enrich the life of every adult. In "Learn To Grow Old," he shares the wisdom of the art of preparing for old age, a phenomemon that most of us will experience, but for which few of us will be ready. As his book reveals, preparing for old age will actually make our young adulthood as well as our mature years more rewarding as a result. Using leisure time most effectively is a learned behavior, as is enjoying the good of what life offers. Most of us pass rapidly by the joys of life in our rush to one appointment or another, one task, one volunteer session, one social event, and the like. Tournier reminds us concretely and thoroughly that the time to live life to the fullest is in the present, in anticipation of a richer future.

World-reknowned as a psychologist and author, Tournier's authority comes in part from his background in psychology, practice in medicine, knowledge of humanity, and religion. His is sound advice and he has unforgettable wisdom to share.

Much of the information on investing in mutual funds, how to read yield curves in the bond market, etc. is not found in her later books on mutual funds; those supplement but do not replace this one.

This book is by no means the end-all be-all of financial information, but was certainly an eye-opener as to the breath of tasks that needed to be accomplished to put your stuff in order. Clearly designed for the beginner, it gives the bare-bones information and then encourages the reader to seek more professional advice. As it is geared for residents or new physicians, this is probably the most sensible route, as no book could contain everything. Overall a good read.

I have met the 1st author and this book contains all the general concepts he advocates in person.

Financial Independence The Smart Way shows you how to become your own investment manager. If you're looking for advice and an action plan to help you secure your financial freedom, look no further. I found this investment book to be the best I've seen. The author takes a disciplined, systematic approach to investing, guiding you from your personal objectives to suitable investments for your portfolio. It has helped me to sort through the maze of current offerings and develop a well-designed plan for investing. The book shows how to "invest the smart way" and what it takes to be a successful investor. The author explains why its risky to be out of the market. I liked the strategies he offered to become my own investment manager, to plan for a financially secure retirement, to invest online and to protect my capital.
