If you want to learn how the major players on Wall Street choose their investments, you'll really enjoy this book. Kazanjian is a wonderful writer. He makes these investment concepts very easy to understand. I have been a stock broker for over 25 years, yet I learned a great deal from this book. It's interesting how you read about a lot of the investment pros Kazanjian profiles in the media all the time. But it wasn't until I read this book that I got to know them and felt like I truly understood their investment philosophies.

This book is a brilliant and valuable contribution to activist movements worldwide...a gift to those who work every day to bring about justice in the world. Every activist who wants to learn more about taking care of her/himself while doing challenging and emotionally draining work needs to get a copy of this wonderful book....Ellen Barry (human rights activist working with women in prison)

We are sisters, 9 and 11 years old. Mom and Dad have always tried to get us to save money but we weren't very good at it. Mom gave us this book for Christmas and we really liked it. It makes sense and tells us why and how to save money in a way that we can understand. Thank you Ted and Lora Lea for a cool book.

There have been many books, pamphlets, brochures and people try to convince of the value of buying RRSP's. However, this book is the first to lay it out in an understandable and fun way .... and this is now my first year for buying RRSP's.

It was a great Christmas present to receive!

Thanks to the authours!

stunning photos & inspiring text

Review Date: 2003-03-05
Reading Turner's recent book, Justice on Earth, made me go back & reread Wild by Law, the first to detail the work of Earthjustice, the leading non-profit environmental law firm. In this book, Turner teamed up with noted wildlife photog Clifton Carr and the results are stunning - gripping text detailed by exquisite photos. The story starts with how Earthjustice got started (as Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund) with a group of lawyers who ended up setting the precedent for citizen participation in environmental issues way back in the '70s. It then covers the US, region by region, with great stories of various cases. Turner's way of spinning the tale makes this more like a Grishom novel than a legal brief.

When the good guys won
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-02
Development has swallowed up so many beautiful places that caring about the environment can become a depressing pastime. Fortunately, the good guys have won some striking victories(at least temporarily), and this beautifully illustrated volume tells some of the details.

There are seven chapters, each focused on a specific region or issue.

Chapter One covers Mineral King valley (California)and the birth of the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund whose landmark Supreme Court case protected this part of Sequoia National Park from a massive development proposed by the Walt Disney corporation.

Chapter Two is about Admiralty Island (Alaska).

Chapter Three describes the politics of energy on the Colorado Plateau, including several national parks in Utah.

Chapter Four covers Redwood National Park (California).

Endangered species are the focus of Chapter Five. It ranges over a wide geographic area including pigeon guillemots in California, Palilas in Hawaii, Murres in the Falloron Islands, dusky dolphins off the coast of Patagonia, humpbacked whales in Alaska, red-cockaded woodpeckers in southeastern forests and the famous northern spotted owl of the Pacific Northwest.

Chapter Six describes legal battles in the Northern Rockies, including clashes with James Watt, Ronald Reagan's choice for Secretary of the Interior.

Chapter Seven includes four battles in the Eastern United States: Lake George (New York), Big Cypress and the Everglades (Florida), Hoosier National Forest (Indiana), and Canaan Valley (West Virginia).

This book is a great gift for anyone who is interested in the preservation of wild places.

I'd always thought my proposals were well written. But after reading Winning Strategies for Developing Grant Proposals, I got a much better understanding of what grant reviewers are really looking for.

I must say that I've had more success getting much-needed funds for our community projects. It's easy to read, and makes a lot of sense.

It's really important these days to go the extra mile to get limited funds. And Winning Strategies for Developing Grant Proposals really made a difference.

As a registered investment advisor, I read this book in preparation for a seminar I conducted for a women's financial program. Obviously in obtaining a license to sell securities 5 years ago, I had already become familiar with the terms and concepts of the book. I find that it is a wonderful introduction to the complicated world of investing and it is refreshing to have been written from a woman's point of view. I have ordered several copies to be kept at my office to distribute to my new female clients because I think it is vital in making a new client feel at ease with the industry terms and jargon that we can be surrounded by each day.

Review Date: 2003-08-25
In the large market of mutual funds, there is a good chance that you can choose the wrong fund. This book will teach you the ways in which to investigate, buy, and trade mutual funds. I found the information contained about each mutual fund, it's purpose, value, etc. to be in depth and easy to understand. The explanations of statistical data are to the point, and the mutual funds listed as the best are convincing. Williamson explains the do's and don'ts of mutual funds and all of the lingo is explained. Get this book before you buy a fund!

A very helpful, definitive must-read for new investors!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1997-10-30
As a college student, I really wanted to take advantage of the current good market, but I didn't have a clue as to where to start. This book starts off by clearly explaining in layman's terms the in and outs of mutual funds. The author defines common terms and practices, and then he lists the 100 best mutual funds, broken down into specific types of funds, i.e. Aggressive Growth Funds, Balanced Funds, etc. Don't worry that the information in this book will soon be outdated, this book can be used as a long lasting reference. The information in the opening chapters can definitely be used in the future, and even though the performance of the top 100 funds changes from year to year, the companies listed are consistently top contenders. As further proof of my belief in this book; a week ago I knew nothing about investing, this week I made my first calls to several mutual funds to request prospectus'!
