For anyone who wants to do more than just hear the music.Review Date: 2001-06-03
The biggest disappointment is the lack of the seldom-recorded extended Grail Monologue. This section, only a few minutes long, was cut by Wagner just prior to the first production and is only available on two commercial recordings of the opera (Leinsdorf and the more widely available Barenboim). So readers following along with these recordings will notice a hole in their scores. -- REP

A Brilliant Play Much Superior To The Novel On Which It Is BasedReview Date: 2008-12-31
The story focuses on the Gant family. W.O. and Eliza Gant are a poorly matched couple, he an alcoholic stone carver of funeral monuments, she a commonplace but greedy woman with a head for business--and the owner and operator of The Dixieland Boarding House of Altamont, North Carolina. Their unlikely mating has produced several unlikely children, with youngest son Eugene central to the drama. Quiet, intelligent, bruised by his father's all too public drunks and his mother's vulgar commercialism, Eugene finds some solace in the company of older brother Ben and later in a romance with boarding-house roomer Laura, but finds it increasingly difficult to remain in such a chaotic family nest.
LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL is essentially the story of how Eugene ultimately tears free of his family to find his own way in the world--and as such it not so much plot-driven as character-driven. And the characters are very well rendered, extracted from the Wolfe novel and given a glow of life: "Fatty" Pert, a boarder in love with Ben; Madame Elizabeth, the town madam; obnoxious uncle Will Pentland; small town Dr. Maguire; and all the rest, beautifully created. It is moody, faintly nostalgic, and memorable stuff tinged with a bit of sad comedy and wistful poetry. Strongly recommended.

Love Your Neighbor SermonsReview Date: 2006-01-09
Pliskin notes in the introduction to his book that "Love Your Neighbor" originated in JUDAISM -- not Christianity. He argues that not only is this commandment in Leviticus but also scattered throughout the five books of the Torah (and the Prophets & Writings but this book does not cover that).
Pliskin's book deduces lessons in this commandment from the choice of words and incidents in the Torah. It then cites great Jewish rabbis' comments (words of inspiration and/or Jewish law) on the particular aspect of loving one's neighbor being discussed.
Pliskin offers hundreds of sermons in this book. Recommended for pulpit rabbis.

This Cookbook Saved My SonReview Date: 2007-12-10
His doctor immediately put him on Lopid and other meds. This resulted only in allergic responses and developing liver toxicity.
In desperation for a cure, I searched the web and decided to give this cookbook a try.
After 5 weeks or so of cooking according to its recipes - my son's triglycerides were 350 and good (HDL) cholesterol was within normal range.
His doctor swore that diet and exercise would be of no use! He was so arrogant and tried to dismiss me despite my 27 years as a nurse.

Mini-sized guide laden with maxi-helpful informationReview Date: 2000-09-06
The story narrative with the music examples is excellent. I prefer it to a libretto; indeed, it's a much easier way to follow the essence of the story. The essay is magnificent; very well written, not pedantic, and extremely insightful and comprehensible. I congratulate Burton Fisher for a job very well done and Amazon for making these handy, information-laden booklets available. The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is a wonderful contribution to opera education and opera appreciation.
My tip: acquire the entire collection because you will be in easy reach of superbly presented opera guides consisting of story analysis, principal characters in the opera, story narrative with music highlights, background, analysis, and commentary.
