Scintillating and Magisterial Orchestrating by the Master in Full ScoreReview Date: 2008-10-18
Here it is available in full orchestra score through the benificent largesse of Dover reprints, and we too can enjoy the same delights conductor's enjoy as they turn the pages. The paperback is effortlessly easy to follow, and it's a genuine work of art, with page after page of beautiful engraving displaying Ravel's unique and inimitable mastery of the orchestra. Boulez credited Ravel with the finest ear in music, but as you peruse this wonderful work you quickly discover Ravel also enjoyed one of the most beautiful eyes in music, for the visuals are nearly as dazzling! The pure and limpid classical balance of the composer's certainty in writing for instruments can actually be seen as you turn from page to page. (Indeed, so distinctive is Ravel's musical signature it once graced as decoration the walls of a public building in Minneapolis!)
Among the special highlights is the famous long opening as all the clocks in the clockmakers slowly build to a wondrous twelve o'clock climax, made all the more special when following the immacualte detailing with this full score. Ravel has a field day with an unceasing extravaganza of Spanish melodies, and on several occasions the full orchestra bursts out in tremendous displays of unparalleled color and passion. There are so many great moments to this short score - and the Dover reprint represents an astonishing deal!
Without doubt the best CD currently available to enjoy with your score is from DG, with excellent now restored sound and BOTH Ravel's wondeful one act operas. Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakov & Stravinsky: Orchestral Works Don't let the title confuse you - this CD does indeed include BOTH Ravel operas -the Russian music is merely nice fillers. At the price of one CD this is a GREAT buy!

Beautiful Picture Book of French Fashions in FULL COLORReview Date: 1998-04-05
The pictures are excellently drawn, in FULL COLOR, and filling an entire page. Most of the pages show two ladies in lovely costumes from the period.
The brief text either explains the occasion for which the dress would be worn, or the materials and fabric of the gown.
There is always a bit of background color behind the ladies so they are not on a stark white page, yet the background does not, in any way detract from the ladies and their apparel.
There are more detailed explanations of each of the gowns featured , listed and numbered, at the front of the book.
There are also a couple of pages featuring various bonnets and hats for spring and winter wear.

What a Wonderful pieceReview Date: 2002-02-05
The writing is exquisite and the print is very easy to read. The score itself is durable and, with a little pressing, lies flat on a table or music stand. It's the largest size available (which is what I prefer) and, most importantly to the starving music student, it's cheap!
A must for musicians and concert-goers alike.

Full to overflowing, even -- Review Date: 2007-01-05
This book, however, is not quite a Katy Green story in the manner of the first two, which had at least as much music as mystery in them. This one is rather undecided about what it wants to be: there is some music, and a little mystery--well actually, more suspense than mystery, I think, and a lot of history. Since I love history as much as I love music and mystery, I found this to be an engrossing story.
Having never met anyone from Hawaii until last year, I'd never given much thought to the history of the islands other than the basics than most people know. I was little more than a toddler when WWII broke out, and it was the European conflict that most affected my life, rather than that in the Pacific.
Of course, I think everyone dreams of an ocean cruise, especially on one of the vintage liners. Reading this book was almost as good as the actual thing, I think, which is probably not possible any more, anyway.
All in all, even though there was not as much music as I might have liked, I didn't feel at all gypped by this book. There are so many other elements that make up for that lack, I have no hesitation at all in recommending it. It succeeds on every level--satisfying reading, excellent characterizations, splendid historical data presented in a readable fashion, and enough suspense/mystery to keep any reader happy.
There is a brief allusion to an older Katy mystery tale. Dare we hope--?
