I have not known these books until now and I am almost 60. I do enjoy this type like the Harry Potter also. I am wondering why the book I have that was printed in 1970 states it is Book 6. The order on the back cover is in order as follows: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe/ Prince Caspian/ The Voyage of the Dawn Treader/ The Silver Chair/ The orse and His boy/ The Magician's Nephew/ The Last Battle/////
Just wondering what the true order is supposed to be??? At any rate I am enjoying them.

I did not realize I was ordering only the first two books in the Narnia series. I found the set attractive and used the same illustrations etc. as the original. But when I got the set, I thought I was getting the full set of all the volumns, not just the first two.

"Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis

Author C. S. Lewis has written a series enchanting for adults and children alike. We follow the adventures of children as they enter into the amazing world of Narnia. Narnia is inhabited by animals that can talk, and an amazing assortment of mythological creatures that delight and fascinate.

At the center of all of these dramas, the conflict between good and evil, doubt and faith, despair and hope predominates. After entering into the wonderous new realm, the children assume a new identity. They learn that in Narnia, they are regarded by all the creatures of Narnia as the Sons of Adam, and the Daughters of Eve.

From the first, the children enter into the new identity cautiously, struggling with the impulse to run away from all troubles and leave the Narnian creatures to their own fate. However, as the story progresses, the Narnians enchant them with their loving nature, and soon the struggles of the Narnian creatures become the passion of the children.

Through the progression of the stories, a wondrous sense of purpose is awakened in the hearts of the children. They no longer feel outside of life, nor do they feel that adults are responsible for everything. Each child takes up a weapon in Narnia, a weapon suitable to their individual nature.

With each new adventure, the children learn that evil is seldom far, and that courage must always be embraced in the fight to assure the outcome of the good, in these adventures in the forests, on the plains, upon the sea, and in the mountains of marvelous Narnia.

C. S. Lewis has written a series of tales that can be compared to the books of J.R.R. Tolkien. Both authors address the issue of the unawakened self as it assumes a vital role, as it begins to engage in life. Both authors demonstrate a simple fact, a fact that can be found in even the simplest folk tales of "Uncle Remus" who tells us: "No sir, you just cain't run from trouble!"

Generations of children and adults are indebted to C. S. Lewis for his stories, and they have warmed many a heart, and coaxed us through the periods of tedium that arise from time to time. These books renew our awareness of purpose, and inspire us with the idea that there is more to Life than meets the eye. There is wonder, adventure, and new purpose with every book.

Very much recommended. Absolutely Five Stars.

I was given this book by a friend. I am not from Chicago nor am I a nurse, but I sat down with it and read it from cover to cover in one sitting in an afternoon. I was particularly interested in the time frame of the early 1970's and her descriptions of the various social and political changes going on at the time. I was in secretarial school at the time, and her description of the preciseness of the uniform hemlines and tea time at the nursing school made me think of the white gloves we were required to wear and the "etiquette" of the times we were required to learn. I came away with a newfound respect for the nursing profession and for the challenges she faced. I was particularly stunned to read the current statistics regarding the shortage of nurses in our nation. Karels wrote this book 20 years after quitting the nursing profession. I give her kuddos for the thoroughness of her memories and research.

For anyone who has ever been a nursing student this book will bring back memories, of happy times and stressful experiences. For those examining the historical struggle in nursing education this book provides good insight, not only into the student experience, but also into the larger economic and political domains during the early 1970's. The book is written with intelligence and compassion. Readers will marvel at the endurance and wisdom of nurses and the nursing profession.

Not coming from a nursing or health care background,I nevertheless thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Karel's book. Each chapter was a new vignette that helped me to identify with the challenging, sometimes shocking life of a novice nurse in an inner city hospital. Its full of passion, joy, humor and wonder. I enjoyed it so much that I have encouraged some friends and nurses that I know to read it, and they have all told me how much they appreciated my recommendation.

I received a copy of the original release of this book from a friend and had to order my own to be a permanant part of my library. I worked at Cook County Hospital and was impressed with the accurate depiction of the condtions and atmosphere of this incredible institution at that time. It was not perfect, but I remember people striving to make it so along with the great compassion of many dedicated professionals working wth limited resources.

This book took me on personal journey of remembrance, but I feel it can give anyone an insight into the workings of a hospital designed to serve the most needy in a big city.

Carol's book was just fabulous - I have read it many times and found it very difficult to put down. I am also a Cook County grad, and Carol has done a great job of helping those who were a part of the that experience stay connected. Memories of CCSN will live on forever thanks to her great skills as a writer (as I recall, she was also an excellent nursing student!) All of us who were once a part of County loved and hated it so much and all at the same time. Thanks, Carol, for sharing with all of us who were part of that great time. I loved the book. There may be a little prejudice in that statement, since Pat was one of my favorite classmates at Moss high school in Oklahoma. I liked the story line. I loved the fresh comments and her style of writing. The only problem I had with the book, and that can be blamed on my short term memory, was so many characters in the beginning for me to remember. I had not seen nor heard from this lovely lady in a number of years until she began publishing. Pat, I loved your book and wish you multitudes of sucess in your next books.

Author Pat Browning's literary hero was John Steinbeck, who won the Nobel Prize for literature. Her esteem for him and her careful study of his style is reflected in the characterization of her heroes, heroines and villains. The book reads well and is worth reading for its ties to the master.

The rural, hometown personalities of Pat's characters really sparkle. Quirky and real, the dialogue only adds more charm to the story.

I believe the town of Pearl exists in pockets as Anytown, USA. Pat has a real flair for capturing the tell-it-like-it-isness of the folks. I think she must have known my Grandmother!

The mystery is twisty-turny, too, just the kind I like. I learned clues along with Penny MacKenzie, leading to a satisfying and logical end.

It's just the sort of book that goes with a cup of tea and a languid afternoon.

Penny Mackenzie is the Lifestyle Editor for The Pearl Outrider - the local newspaper for the small town of Pearl. Her friend, Maxie Harper, reporter for the Outrider, talks her into a late night stakeout. Although a tip that local eighth graders are worshipping the devil and doing human sacrifices turns into nothing more than a pot party, the discovery of a skeleton in a nearby cotton field, throws Pearl into a frenzy of secrets, lies - and murder. Penny finds Maxie's body during an event put on by the Chamber of Commerce. Dinner in the Round is a progressive event that takes the participants to several locations for different parts of the dinner. However, Maxie's progress is ended permanently - at Egg Foo's Bar and Grill.

Who killed Maxie Harper and why? What does the book, Pearl, The Little Town That Gold Built, written by Dabney Brewster, a retired English teacher and the town's local historian, have to do with her death? And whose skeleton has been hiding all these years in Digger Pott's field?

As these questions swirl around Penny like crazy birds trying to find a place to land, Pearl's unique citizens create more questions than answers while a long lost love interest pops back into Penny's life, complicating matters even more.

In this stunning debut series novel, Pat Browning has created a wonderful protagonist and surrounded her with interesting side characters. Penny and Pearl hold the promise of many more intriguing adventures. Browning's writing is professional and flawless and the story is engrossing, with just the right touch of suspense and humor.

This is a winning cozy - from an exciting new author. I'll be watching for the next book in the series - and the next - and the next....

Travelling with Michael is to say the least exhilarating, fun, adventurous and a journey of discovery. While many can only dream of actually making the trip, Michael Palins' books are the next best thing. It's not just where he goes, but how he does it and perhaps most importantly: seeing it through his mind's eye, which needless to say can make humor out of nothingness. All you need is to relax and have the urge to increase your imagination. A wild but educative ride!

Michael Palin does it again with Full Circle. Starting in Alaska Michael travels anti-clockwise around the rim of the Pacific Ocean visiting countries as diverse as Russia, Korea, Viet Nam, New Zealand, Colombia and the west coast of North American. He tells of his adventures getting to and exploring some fantastic natural wonders, visiting a Russian gulag with a former inmate, the relief of Japan, the Vietnamese reactions to a westerner, the biggness of Australia and the hardworking people of South America. The section on the United States is short and not always sweet. Palin is taken aback by the physical bigness of Americans, and rush, and loudness. By the time he reaches Canada and attends a "lumberjack" fair (no singing Mounties included!) he really "wants to go home". We also learn a bit about how the series and book were produced, his wife Helen and their children, and that being on a job for the BBC doesn't always mean smooth sailing! Michael's friend Basil Pao took the photographs - he also joined Michael on "Around the World in Eighty Days". I can highly recommend this book and not only to fans of Monty Python - it doesn't end how you might expect!

As always Palin has produced a great travel book and series... this I found better than his "80 Days". The other thing people might find interesting about this travel book is that it takes us to some places which are hard to reach even in this day and age, so this is the only way we can know them.

I've seen the 10-part Full Circle tv series, and I had a serious addiction from the start. When it ended, I went through a withdrawl period. I silently rocked myself in a chair in my room repeating "I must get the book,... must find book...must read book." I've got it now and I'm back on a Full Circle high. The book goes into details that they never had time for on the series. It tells you everything that you would have noticed had you been in Japan or Australia or Chile.

Ahh... I can imagine myself right now on the streets of China getting a massage from a blind man.

Having just read Kirk Cameron's new autobiography, Still Growing: An Autobiography, I decided to follow-up with his mother's story. It was very well written, entertaining and enlightening. Barbara Cameron's honesty is refreshing and the personal stories, in some cases leave you laughing and at times lead you to tears. She takes you behind the scenes in Hollywood and discusses some of the ups and downs of the business and what it takes to protect one's family.

As you will learn from this book, the family was on the verge of disintegration and Barbara struggled with her faith for a number of years, believing that all a person has to do to get to heaven is to "be good." She does a beautiful job in describing her true coming of faith and the restoration of her marriage. This is an excellent book, not just for fans of her famous children.

A great memoir about a woman doing her best to be fair and good in a system (Hollywood) that can corrupt the best of us.

What makes Barbara Cameron's story exceptional is that anyone can relate to her. We're able to see her adult relationship with God begin with her simple belief that He is our Creator who helps us when we pray. Then we're able to see Barbara's realization that He is Everything and there is nothing without absolute Trust in Him, and the changes in her life that ensue.

The feelings and emotions described in this book are the feelings and emotions so many of us deal with everyday and are left wondering how to deal with issues of faith and submission to God.

This wonderful book by Barbara Cameron explains the comings and goings, trials, tribulations, success's and heartbreaks of a Hollywood family. It's refreshingly honest with no spin at all. Mrs. Cameron had her shares of ups and downs in her personal life, all the while being a supportive mother who kept her "star" children in line and the "non-star" children were really the stars at home.
My heart went out to poor Bridgett who is the real star of the family!! But their amazing transformation into Born Again, on fire for Jesus Chrsit and their passion that none should miss out on Heaven is so honest, and pure, and indeed rare in a Hollywood where it's hip to be anti-Christian, anti-morals, and whatever goes is OK. Praise God for this family and I know that He is indeed Blessing us with this most excellent book. Thank you Ray Comfort for inspiring Mrs. Cameron. Thank You Mrs. Cameron for sharing your life with us, and thank you Jesus for loving and dying for all of us so that we may be saved!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Murphy's humor, tenacity and bravery are awe inspiring. She's attacked by wolves (or possibly wild dogs), wakes up in a tent after going to sleep out in the open, fends off an attempted rapist and has many other thrilling adventures. In one instance, when there are nefarious characters about, she is advised to booby trap her inn bedroom's doorway with empty bottles. In her journal, she calmly notes that emptying bottles is the one thing she's really good at.

I couldn't help feeling sad while reading this book. In 1965, when this book was published, most people were probably unfamiliar places like Kabul and Jalalabad. Now, of course, in the wake of the post-9/11 bombing of Afghanistan, Kabul is a household word. Turns out, that city was once breathtakingly beautiful, as well as the country around it. Murphy's trek takes her through Afghanistan at a time when the USSR and the US were vying for control of this country. The Russians were busy providing electricity and importing goods, while the Americans seemed to approach this ancient country with the intent to raze the traditional culture to the ground and replace it with a modern one. One wonders if, if both countries had never meddled with Afghanistan, there might never have been the Taliban? In any event, this book takes the reader back to a truly relevant experience of the not-so distant past.

What a find! I'm amazed Dervla Murphy is not much better known. She has such an appealing vigor and zeal for adventure, combined with an acute eye for cultural observation and a rich capacity for description. Dervla takes one of the most audacious trips I've ever heard of, and undergoes some of the most harrowing and arduous of trials with non-showoff-y courage, such as when three heavy objects that turn out to be wolves fling themselves at her on a dark deserted road in the Balkans, or she is awakened in the middle of the night to find a "scantily dressed Kurd" standing over her bed. (In both instances her pocket pistol dispatched the dilemma without further ado.) Not only are these accounts riproaring, but she so warmly and affectionately describes the so-called "undeveloped" cultures she grows to know as she passes through remote stretches of Afganistan and Pakistan, that she quite awakens a First World reader to the narrowness of our outlook.

It was by accident I discovered this book, but how fortunate it was! Murphy did not just ride a bicycle from Ireland to India, impressive in itself, but she lived and laughed and played with the Prince's and Peasants she met through out her journey. Her descriptions of the people she meets and the ancient lands she cross are simple and magical.

Some of her experiences seem to belong to fairy tales, other's remind's one of Arabian Nights, and at other times, it seemed Murphy was whisked into Tolkien's land of Middle Earth with fierce and gallant warriors on horseback.

I will quote a couple of passages which highlight her sense of humor and observation.

"...But it was worth it all to rise gradually from that fertile, warm valley to the still, cold splendour of the snow-line, where the highest peaks of the Hindu Kush crowd the horizon in every direction and one begins to understand why some people believe that gods live on mountain tops."

"...when suddenly I came on the most unexpected sight-a playing field complete with twenty-two youths and a soccer ball. I know very little about soccer, but enough to know this is how it is not played. No one ever moved about trotting speed, no one ever tried to tackle anyone else, the referee never used his whistle, the ball was never headed and the two goalies sat crosslegged between the posts most of the time, looking abstracted. The real excitement from a spectator's point of view was caused by the fact that one side of the field had a sheer drop of 200 feet, so that the main object of all the players was to keep the ball from going into the ravine rather than to kick it between the posts."

I first read this book in the sixties in grade school. I bought the reissued edition, rediscovering it by coincidence. Ms. Murphy's journey in the early sixties is, if anything, more fascinating to read today in light of the changes in the Middle East since she travelled there. Her independence and cheerful acceptance of different cultures is refreshing. This book was written prior to the 'me' decade, and while intensely personal, lacks the self-preoccupation that more recent writers practice.

Additionally, unlike so many bicycle travelogues, this book doesn't focus on the author's bicycle! The focus remains on the journey, which renders it excellent reading for all, not just bicyclists.

This is a timeless read and one that can be revisited with pleasure.

I'm glad to have seen such a diversity of topics in the book. Many authors don't mention certain things for children such as illnesses that might touch their own personal lives. Of course they have grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends that might be affected by Alzheimer's disease. I also enjoyed the different moods of happiness and sadness in other poems. View the Glass Half Full! Imaginative Collection of Poems Offers Young Poets Insight and Inspiration
Monday February 3, 3:22 pm ET

MIAMI, Fla., Feb. 3, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Writing poetry is never easy, whether it be a simple rhyme about cats wearing hats or a monumental epic detailing grand adventures and great deeds. Fortunately, award-winning teacher and author Ana Monnar is here to help! Monnar explores and explains the basics of writing poetry and much more in her new book, Half Full, Or Half Empty?

Written for children ages ten and older, Monnar's simple to use, easy to understand book offers examples of different types of poems -- from couplets to limericks, from haikus to narrative pieces, on a wide variety of topics, including faith, hope, compassion and unity. She also includes tips on reading, recitation, and composition as well as links to helpful Web sites such as online rhyming dictionaries, translations and poetry contests.

Inspired by her own love of poetry and in recognition of its therapeutic value, Monnar writes, ``This book is different from other children's poetry books because it offers humor, and awakens emotions, both happy and sad.'' Drawing on a culturally diverse background as well as two decades of teaching experience, Monnar's book effectively and expertly instructs even the youngest of poets to express his or her feelings, in a structured, productive way.

Author Ana Monnar was born in Havana, Cuba. Having spent her early years there, she immigrated to Miami at the age of seven and became a U.S. citizen. She earned a master of science degree in early childhood and elementary education from Florida International University and has been teaching ever since. A wife and mother of three, Monnar explores photography, reading and writing in her spare time. Although she has inspired countless students to write and publish their works, Half Full, Or Half Empty? is her first book. Her second book, Adoption? Thank God for that Option! is due out in 2003.

I think this is a book that could be enjoyed by anyone but really seems to speak to a woman's heart. As I read, I found myself thinking back on my own life experiences.

The author's strong spiritual sense comes through in her very entertaining takes on human relationships of all kinds. A very soulful lady!

This is more than poetry....This book is life.....

Marilyn Dean is a gifted writer that sees far and beyond what first appears when dealing with life. We all should take a moment to enter her world, which will give you an omniscient view because we can all, relate to the positive and inspirational messages. Here are a few of my favorites... "God is", page 3, "Absentee Dad", page 73, "Please come in out of the rain", page 141 and "Final Wishes", Page 203. This collection is beautiful and breath taking. You will be happy you checked out her story, her way, her circle...

Mariyn comes to you from the heart, her experiences are in most cases yours. I had the honor of meeting with her and her sister Gwenn in Michigan during the month of 7/02. Again her style of writing relexs you and infuses you to try harder. Time has allowed her to be herself and to flow with her God giving talents.

A perfect gift

Having been a professional magician for the past 17 years, I've read many books on magic. In my opionion, "Pockets Full of Miracles" is the best on the subject. It is beautiful, well-written, and has great photographs. It will help the beginner or the advanced magician by giving them clear-cut explanations to some of the many amazing effects in the professional repetoire of Diamond Jim.

If you read only one magic book this year, make it "Pockets Full of Miracles." You, and your audiences, will be glad you did.

A book for everyone!!

This is truly the book for all magicians of any caliber. I have personally read and performed every trick in this book. Diamond Jim has tweeked every description so that it is written for beginners and not belittling to professionals. I would most definately recommend this to every magician to add to their catalogues.

This book not only has great tricks, but killer routines, with all the details. Most magic books have sketchy instructions with lots of bugs and mistakes, but Diamond Jim is a detail-oriented author, and I appreciate that. There is a difference, of course, between great tricks and killer tricks, and this book is a serial killer. I still have several of the tricks contained herein on my to-learn list.

I just received this as a gift, and I am so thrilled. I think this particular artist has a wonderful gift of emotion in the art that really draws us into the story. I love the use of colors and the unique perspective. I am very pleased to add this to my collection of fairy tale items.

True colors show true subtlety and magic of Rackham!

I heartily concur with the estimations of Rackham's value to the area of children's book illustrations. Look for Rackham's Mother Goose and Alice in Wonderland from Chancellor Press to introduce your little ones to his illustrations is book form, as well as Favorite Tales From Grimm. But my desire here is to point out the true color found in this collection of Rackham's illustrations. Beware, as some books republished with his pictures do not capture the subtlety of his use of color. He used dark colors and gently colored objects in all of his pictures. This book, along with Dover's other Rackham collections show his work in all its glory, the subtle and the grotesque simultaneously. A delight for any collector of Rackham, suitable for framing.

This thin volume is filled with some of the most enchanting drawings and paintings ever to grace childrens' books. There is an element of style in Rackham's work that reminds me in many ways of Japanese woodblock prints of the 19th century. And like a quality Japanese woodblock print, a Rackham plate is a feast for the eye.

Fairy tale subjects can range the fair to the hideous. Often illustrators are biased towards one end of the spectrum. Rackham is one of those talented artists that can simultaneously capture the beauty of a fair maiden and the brutishness of a foul giant in one composition. I especially like the vitality of his figures and the whimsical and often grotesque facial expressions of his fairies and giants. I would recommend this volume to anyone who is fond of fairy tales and fine illustration.
