I have heard Elizabeth Thomas give her poetry to audiences several times, including the national Slam Poetry convention in CT a few years ago. The directness of her speech in written form is as striking as is her performance art. Looking forward to her forthcoming new volume !

A great accomplishment in the realm of personal narrative.

Full Circle was a powerful work of signifigance. Deeply emotional, the book transcends Jansen's extraordinary battle as a parable of every athlete's struggle for personal developement. McCallum weaves an enduring tale that athlete, sports nut, or soccer mom can internalize to better understand the common struggle manifested by sports. More eloquent even than Shaq Attaq, Full circle is an accomplishment of aesthetics and moral comprehension.

The Way WE ALL SHOULD THINK ABOUT EDUCATION
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-13
Penny Chase and Jane Doan were my teachers. My mother writes one of the parent reflections in their book. I have gone on to teach through the Teach for America program in the South Bronx. I teach 7th and 8th grade in a large public middle school with extremely low performance scores and high rates of poverty. As I finish my graduate courses and complete my own teacher research, I've read articles and text book chapters which refer to the work of Penny and Jane. What I've realized is that their work, their philosophy of education, their way of thinking about children as learners APPLIES to us all. I have used the differentiated, community-oriented approach in a large urban middle school and found the results and the possibilities just as amazing, if not more, than the small rural elementary school where Penny and Jane built their classrooms. READ THIS BOOK.

Some of the most beautiful photographs you'll ever see
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-15
This is a beautiful coffee table style book full of fantastic photographs taken by Basil Pao. These pictures were taken at locations all around the Pacific Rim during the Michael Palin trip known as "Full Circle".

This book should not be confused with Michael Palin's book about that trip, which is simply called "Full Circle". That book also contains a lot of Basil Pao's pictures, but they are secondary to the text written by Michael Palin.

"Full Circle: The Photographs" is exclusively Basil Pao's book, except for a brief 2-page introduction written by Michael Palin.

In my opinion this book is the best of the four books of photographs that Basil Pao has produced to celebrate the various trips that he shared with Michael Palin. (The other three are "Pole to Pole: The Photographs", "Inside Sahara" and "Inside Himalaya".)

One thing that is special about this book is that the pictures are not shown in chronological or geographic order. The pictures are shown by category, with pictures that supplement or contrast with each other shown side by side, and one of the pictures may be from Siberia and the other from Peru.

I can imagine Basil Pao having lots of fun deciding which pictures to include and which pictures to show together.

Some of the best pictures are shown as magnificent two-page spreads. Every picture has a small caption telling where it was taken.

As usual with Basil Pao, most of the pictures (approx. 75%) include people in one way or another. There are some stunning landscapes too, but the pictures of people are the most fascinating. Some of the babies and children are especially cute.

The only thing I'm slightly disappointed about is the dearth of pictures from the USA and Canada. I'm guessing this is due to the film team traveling fairly quickly through this last leg of the journey (Michael Palin admitted that he was homesick), the fact that for us Westerners the people of the USA and Canada are not so exotic, and possibly concerns about model release forms and legal problems.

Very highly recommended. It's not easy to find this book new so you'll have to search for a used copy, and you'll be glad you did.

PS. For those who might be interested, I've written an Amazon "So You'd Like To" guide about Basil Pao and his participation in the Michael Palin trips and the books that have been produced by Basil Pao and Michael Palin. You can find it by clicking on my name and then finding the link to my "So You'd Like To" guides a little ways down on the left of my profile page.

This is a great series. My daughter is 7.5, a really good reader & is very sports minded compared to other girls her age. She is not interested at all in the girly girl books made for girls her age. This is a great way to keep her engaged in reading in our Christian household.

No more thinking, just pick it up. Even with the $130 price tag, it's way worth it. Like most, I missed out on the very limited first edition, but I didn't waste any time on this one. From the layout of the content, to the highly detailed pics, to the openning essay, everything about the book is full on mind boggling. Even the cardboard sleeve on on this thing is tight! Truly for those interested in one of the most soulful artforms.

Nostalgic Review of the 1980's
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-13
In her book, Ms.Klare Sullivan, a "Southern Belle" of charm and grace, presents a series of delightfully humorous anecdotes reflecting the changing times in the "new South." This collection originally appeared as human interest articles in a number of newspapers in Mississippi and Louisiana during the 1980's. Written from the perspective of one who is confessedly "over the hill," each article is a reflection on the social and cultural changes which imperceptibly affect our daily lives. The "true life" stories are brief - one or two pages each - and are presented under sixteen titles such as "Foodstuff," "Vacations," "Music," "Reunions," and others.
Although bringing wonder, if not misgiving, on seemingly mundane themes, Ms. Sullivan does so with spiritual insight and an enthusiasm for "living, loving, and laughing!" In her light-hearted questioning, Ms. Sullivan speaks for many! And isn't it ironic: this one who looks wistfully at the past, has published her first book in the iUniverse, Inc's newest on demand form!

This book makes an excellent case for the banning of all biological weapons. The book discusses the dangers of weapons targeting ethnic groups by elitists, such as the ulta-rich, military, large corporations etc.. Although the book deals primarily with the aids virus and the circumstances of how it has emerged, it also deals with the danger of the Genome project and how this knowlege can lead to weapons so terrible that they may lead to the extinction of the human race. The scariest part of this book is that Dr. Gary Glum points out how mass media has refused to cover the real story.
