A Girl and Her Dog, And More
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-29
To paraphrase a famous saying, there is little love so pure as that between a girl and her dog. Oh, this book is about more than that. It's about Michelle's and Stephanie's friendship, some silly problems as the dog show approaches and how they solve those, about a boyfriend Stephanie thinks is so cool, but he's really got a dark secret. And, finally, about the fun of training a dog, a dog the reader almost gets into the mind of, it's written that well. I could just see my own there. Thsi is not just a really good Full House book. If you know someone with a great house dog, they will love this book.

Excellent DSM book- Read this book before doing DSM
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-03
This book is excellent. It deals with why we need domain specific modeling (DSM), starting off with business value- then defines DSM and provides an architecture for it - the language, the models, code generation, a framework and the process that connects all of these. It follows this with 5 detailed case studies and then towards the end talks about uses and tools.

I enjoyed reading it and am planning to implement in my projects. The authors are associated with a tool that does DSM - Metaedit+ found at metacase dot com and which has a trial download.

great water mark of modernity

this is again a high point for Carter's newly found aesthetic, neo this or neo that, I simply listen these days, but he had fashioned a musical language of continuation, intervallic mosaics, rhythmical structures employed over large swabs of time with the combustible emotive freedoms of here two keyboard soloists,,,the agenda here was to associate certain chamber timbres with either the harpsichord or the piano, like a timbral dialogue, latterly developed in his "Penthode"/ / / Here the "Double Concerto" it begins quite mysteriously with fragments and shards, tinkles, thuds, and chunks of percussive sounds, lightly tapped tom-toms and suspended cymbals/ / / I heard performances where the percussion cadre came to dominate the timbral space given, too loud! no the two keyboard instruments should reign supreme here with their own cadre of chamber orchestras to help them convey their content. The Harpsichord which can be amplified is first in exposition of materials, you hardly know the piano exists, lighly trying to penetrate the discussion, like some marginal prophet trying to find where it belongs, with lightly sprinkled finger cymbals and idle taps on a metal plate, there is not much sustaining power here unless you find these overwhelming arpeggiations in the harpsichord which Carter does employ, each orchestra has their own materials, their own intervallic language, timbres, rhythms to establish who they are in Cartesian formation, like a "clash of civilizations"to a degree promuligated now for greater divisions of greed and wealth, so to within the realms of the aesthetic these metaphors have some substance,The piano then comes to dominate the latter half of the piece, within its more rotund timbres to help convey its persona, trombones and lower strings and winds help this tyranny along, and lower tom-toms, these timbres do interestingly enough cross in diagonals between chamber borders, and if all these expressive emotive minutae are not sorted out you have a real quagmire on your hands/ / / if you have strong persuasive musician soloists as Ursula Oppens, the piece ceases the "double concerto" narrative. The work is compact, classic in shape and agenda, quite difficult to perform in that much happens of intervallic configurations, although Carter kept his orchestrations quite lean, and understared, at least that is my take on how to read the work, yet there are layering devices to distinguish mere accompaniment from primary material. This was Carter's first primary work subsequent to the associative achievements of context of the First and Second String Quartets/ / / there has not been yet another modern concerto of this modest magnitude, unpretencious, yet proclaiming a territory nonetheless.Too bad this work is not perfomred more often than it is by primary venues, usually student orchestras take up the cause, and as relavant as that enterprising course is, it is far from the trajectory where masterworks of modernity should reside.

A Drop Of Love is Bradford Johnson's poetic celebrations all the aspects of romantic relationships. This outstanding and enthusiastically recommended collection of one hundred upbeat poems are showcased with chapter illustrations and thematic border designs by Janice Clymer. Love As A Strategy: In our unspoken pledges/we entrust each other/with vulnerabilities/that we don't even know/about ourselves;//in our labor of love we refuel smiles with sunrise,/and acknowledge the sunsets/as they lure away the/last remaining daylight.//In our chess game/with the world we search/our hearts for survival tactics/to move successfully/against the timer;/in our lust for living/we rage, rage against/the dying of what might/really be an answer disguised/within the question.//In our own ambiguities/and uncertainties we may wonder,/but we stoke the fires of action/so that, ultimately, we will/die with our boots on.

I used this book to do my first stained glass project without the guidance of my instructor. The cardstock templates are great -- you can cut the pieces out and save them for later works, just remember to make a photocopy! The book has a variety of designs to suit just about every taste, from Pennsylvania Dutch to more abstract modern designs. There are also several different skill levels, so you can progress to more difficult/complex boxes as your skills improve. The explanations of the tools and techniques assume that you have a very basic understanding of stained glass craft, so I'd recommend using this book after you've taken a couple of classes and are ready to branch out on your own.

Few if any paranormal police procedurals are as good as the Casey-Mitchell Lake Michigan whodunits
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-06

The digging at a construction site on the south side of Lake Michigan uncovered many human bones. Everyone assumed that a Native American burial site was inadvertently exhumed.

As the local tribes want the site preserved as a cemetery, Chasen Heights detective in charge of the investigation Jake Mitchell arrives at the dig accompanied by his detective wife Sam Casey. She quickly informs her spouse that the remains of one of the dead told her that they were murdered three years ago. Jake knows to heed Sam's Native American psychic skills. However, the bones go missing before they can be tested as if someone fears what they will tell will affirm Sam's information.

Few if any paranormal police procedurals are as good as the Casey-Mitchell Lake Michigan whodunits (see NOTHING ELSE MATTERS, WHEN THE DEAD SPEAK and RESTLESS SPIRIT). The latest entry ECHOES FROM THE GRAVE is a terrific whodunit as a cunning person manipulates the construction crew and the Native Americans to insure Mitchell cannot learn the truth although his sleuthing spouse Sam has pointed him in the right direction. The investigation brings to life some of the history of the Lake Michigan area while the husband and wife detectives are a delightful pair as they do their jobs professionally enhanced by her talent and that of her Native American family. Although construction sites in the Chasen Heights area seem extra dangerous, S. D. Tooley provides an exhilarating fast paced mystery that readers will appreciate.

Outstanding reprint of Strauss's darkest opera
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-23
It is in "Elektra" that Richard Strauss came closest to entering the world of atonality (some passages - e.g., Klytämnestra's recounting how sleep is denied to her thanks to terrible nightmares - actually do cross the border temporarily); also, compared to "Salome"'s seductive, enticing feeling, Strauss (while using a very similar formula in fact to the other work) nevertheless from the very 1st notes evokes a completely different atmosphere!

To fully appreciate the grim world of this work, even when following recordings, one can't do without the full-score - and what a Godsend with Dover's inexpensive, well-sized, well-bound reprint of the original Adolf Fürstner edition!!! Most warmly recommended not only to Strauss-lovers but also to all opera-buffs, serious music students (especially those who care about the orchestra and effective writing for it!) and generally for any serious music-library!!
