Teaches Babies About Musical Instruments
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-27
Each page of this book has a Barney character, (BJ, Barney, or Baby Bop) playing a musical instrument: "Oom-pa-pa, Oom-pa-pa, Barney loves to play the tuba." It's easy to make this book interesting with sound effects, since they are written into the book!: "Crash, smash, clang! BJ loves to play the cymbals." My 13-month-old son loves this book.

Excellent guide to creating "what works and why" with quilting designs
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-19
Written clearly and concisely with equally understandable graphic illustrations, this book delivers on its introductory promise--that "you will discover the tricks and techniques for choosing appropriate quilting designs for your quilt tops and how to create your own unique designs." Alex Anderson's chapters on "Choosing Quilting Designs" and "Drawing Quilting Designs" are among the best written on these topics to date.

Whether you are a beginning quilter or seasoned master, the chapter on "Choosing Quilting Designs" offers you the analytical skills to look at quilt tops and "learn what works and why" with quilting them. This analysis will not only help you in choosing quilting designs for your own quilts but will also help you to better understand and evaluate the quilt art of others.

Alex's chapter on "Drawing Quilting Designs" teaches you how to create these linear designs for quilting. Highlighted are eight-section and twelve-section designs, the eight-pointed (Lemoyne) star, cable, feathered wreath, borders (cables and feathers), border or sashing corners, repeat designs, curved-line designs, grid designs, and original designs. Yes, original designs that *you* will be able to create using Alex's examples as your guide.

In conclusion, Alex offers five quit projects and a large pullout of quilting designs to help you work through examples of designs that are successful with the various pieced and appliquéd shapes in these projects or on projects of your own.

There are many other wonderful books on the market that support this one in assisting you with expanding essential skills in your journey as a quiltmaker. A few that particularly stand out are as follows:
1. For quilt marking: "Mastering Quilt Marking" by Pepper Cory
2. For a no-mark approach to quilting designs: "Show Me How to Create Quilting Designs" by Kathy Sandbach
3. For accomplishing the quilting stitches
- by hand:
"Quiltmaking by Hand" by Jinny Beyer
- by machine:
"Heirloom Machine Quilting, 4th Edition" by Harriet Hargrave
4. For bindings: "Happy Endings" by Mimi Dietrich

Happy designing and happy stitching!

Another excellent reprint by Dover (only my 1st copy was defective)
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-09
Once I got past the defects of my 1st copy (which had to thus be exchanged), there is no question of this being another gem to add to Dover's collection of fine reprinted 1st-edition scores, with this one to boot having the bonus of having apparently-decent singing-translations in German and English in addition to the original Russian version by Konstántin Bálmont which Sjergjéy Vasíljevich Rakhmáñinov set. [The very fact that the English version used in the score is NOT the original Poe poem-set can indicate just how virtually untranslateable poetry usually happens to be (hence one book trying to do that writing of such attempts as 'a study in failure')!!] The only regret from this non-Italianophile writer is that the the instrumental nomenclature is in Italian (unlike the same original publisher's "Ostróva Mjórtvïkh" {Isle of the Dead}, Op.29, which was basically done in German); however, that's inconsequential. [Another thing that might have been of help could have been to print the two scores in one volume; furthermore, the original publisher Gutheil often lets blank staves fill up pages and systems where perhaps they could have profitably been omitted - but that's not Dover's fault at all...] Otherwise, bravo Dover!!!!

Excellent book on rodeo history
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-18
As with all of Gail Woerner's books, this is an excellent book for the rodeo historian. Names, dates, events--there are so many that you'll spend weeks going back and checking various references. As an author of rodeo mysteries, I find myself constantly checking Gail's books to confirm a date or name that adds more detail to my own books. She has all the major events from the past, plus a lot of not-so-major ones. If you like rodeo and you like history, this is a definite keeper.

I bought this for my 5 year old daughter, to have something other than Disney to listen to in the car. She loves it, and I love it too. I wish there were more like it, because we would love to hear more stories by Ms. Narayan. She is a wonderful storyteller...we laugh at the stories no matter how many times we have heard them!
