Fascinating, deftly written, and informative
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-07
After a fourteen year hiatus, the National Championship Air Races were revived at Reno, Nevada in 1964. This event showcases racing teams who push the envelope of aerodynamic improvements and modify their 2,000 and 3,000 horsepower engines to make their aircraft as fast as possible in competition with the others. The racers are classified into six groups: Formula 1, Biplane, Sport, T-6, Jets, and Unlimiteds. Profusely illustrated with full color photography, "Air Racing over Reno: The World's Fastest Motorsport" by Philip Handleman is the fascinating, deftly written, and informative story of this unique aviation event and very highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in aviation.

1st Edition on General Shinseki's Desk So He had no Excuse
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-12
This book was placed on General Shinseki's desk long BEFORE he announced his ill-fated decision to waste $BILLIONS on "LAV-III" Canadian-made peackekeeper trucks and the tragic loss of Soldier lives and limbs in the post-nation-state war occupation of Iraq. The sugar-coating of "Stryker" had not even been concocted to fool the lower ranks yet into victim-hood and you will see its called an "IAV" throughout the book. Since time was of the essence, some typos are seen in the book obviously in order to get the warning out to Headquarters Department of the Army that better tracked armored vehicle transformation options were (and still are) necessary to render air and cross-country mobility and far better protection than any wheeled truck can carry. Sadly, since the hubris-filled days of the Clinton administration where the Army wanted to cash in on their nation-building peacenik racket, all U.S. military concoctions dreamed up by incompetent generals have been made in a fact-free environment sans any objective, honest analysis regardless of how many reformers have vigorously assembled the facts on a silver platter as this book does. Congress, its members mostly lacking any military experience are easily mislead by DoD and the uniformed services and is not doing its job of being watchdogs of the nation's defense by bringing in outside experts or calling on hearings and having reformers like the AMS authors testify since they are fully aware of the true situation as insiders. If these problems are not fixed, America will not be around for the 22nd century, which if it was would feature Air-Mech-Strike's 30th edition as following generations of frustrated Army leaders articulate why three-dimensional maneuver capabilities must be fielded today despite the excuses of the status quo that "its too hard to do until we get technology X in the cash cow program, Perpetual Future Combat System" etc. etc. ad nauseum.

I loved this story!

I have to be honest, I did not purchase this audio book but downloaded it from our online library. I just don't have that kind of money to spend.... Maybe if I were rich.

My son (who is 11 years old) and I absolutely loved and enjoyed this audio book. At first, my son was like, "Ugh, this is going to be a waste of time". But once the story started, he was hooked. This was our first audio book that we listened to together. We listened to it whenever we were in the car going to and from school as well as for half an hour at bedtime. When the story was over, we wanted so bad to listen to the next book "Skybreaker" but it is not yet available in audio format at our library. So sad. I'm trying to get him to read the next book instead of listen to it. Wouldn't that be fantastic!??!

This is a great read for young readers since the main character is 15 years old. However, this is still a story that adults can enjoy. It is also helped my son use his imagination.

I recommend this audio book to anyone.

I found Kershner's mastery of human emotion cleverly intertwined in his musings and verse. I only hope that upcoming writers take notice of his style and may learn to appreciate the subtleties that life shadows, just as Kershner has shown us. Please bring more to the table, your followers are hungry!

...Our beleaguered friend, the hotel cook from the first book, has a job as the galley cook on a small cruiser. Unfortunately for him, a delight for the observer, he makes his famed and event altering soup again!
A marvellous wordless book, packed full of action and drama to entice and concentrate the most distracted and distractable minds. Gloriously produced, beautifully illustrated and full of possibility. An ingenious devise and every bit as special as it's forerunner. A must have.

My son was delighted with this book. Rather than focusing on one particular sport, All Star Sports Fun represents a wide variety of recreational activities. The book also contains several different types of puzzles so my son was excited to complete every page, rather than quickly becoming bored with the monotony. The illustrations are colorful and active. My son is younger than the recommended age and I helped him understand the directions to the puzzles. I'm not certain that kids in the higher end of the recommended age group would be as captivated with this book. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Transparent images, translucent words
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-15
Why do I rejoice in Margaret Chula's new volume of tanka poems, Always Filling, Always Full?

Poetry is a window and a mirror, and Margaret Chula's poems are composed of the finest glass. She shapes translucent images to clarify the outer world known by our senses. She breathes transparent words to illuminate the inner world only half-known by our hearts.

Chula's images - copper leaves, fireflies, spring nests - call us to let the body's knowledge of its surroundings shine through into awareness.

Her words - about being in love and out of love, about encounters with sorrow and bewilderment and acceptance - challenge us to light our own lives with honesty.

Page by page Chula demonstrates her mastery of the English-language tanka, a five-line form adapted from Japanese literature. With contemporary content and traditional techniques she creates patterns of subtle yet deeply moving resonance between natural image and emotional insight.

The passion and elegance of these poems, collected from Birkenau and Kyoto, from backyard and bedroom, will illuminate every corner of your world.
