As a teacher I am always looking for ways to open the lines of communication with my students. This book is a real eye opener for parents and teachers everywhere. Olivia is a brave and resourceful girl who should have been able to count on the adults in her life, but they have failed her. Judith Kristen has created a wonderful character who never gives up, no matter how desperate she may feel. Olivia eventually triumphs over adversity, and gives hope to kids caught in similar situations. My 15 year old daughter told me I had to read this. I'm so glad she did!

Judith Kristen's novel about a young girl's struggles to make it on her own is touching and thought-provoking. An illigitimate child, Olivia was raised by her loving grandmother and enjoyed a close and loving relationship. Tragically,Olivia's grandmother dies leaving her devoid of people who care about her. She moves in with her father and his new family, where she is expected to be, essentially, the family slave. Olivia seeks help from any number of well meaning adults, who either don't take her situation seriously or feel that their hands are tied. Yet Kristen doesn't end on this tragic note. Olivia fights for her freedom and eventually wins out over the red tape of a bureaucratic child welfare system. This book is filled with hope and love and most of all empowerment. It will leave you cheering for this smart and spunky heroine!

Amazing amount of info and inspiration & [good] price!

What a gem! I was surprised when I discovered this book. The gist of the book is for the child (or adult) to mark off a square space in the woods and begin exploring and learning. This book is a real integration of activities, suggested observations, and fact. The learner is to explore, dig, look, observe and investigate every inch of this square area. While suggesting the learner look for this or that, the author provides factual information about various findings. The book goes into a lot of detail and there are many things that the author thinks may be found. I bet that the learner won't find everything that is mentioned but that is OK, at least the reader can experience it in reading about it in the book if it is missed "in real life".

The book starts off in autumn, assuming the learner begins in the fall and in an area of deciduous trees. A small sampling of what is addressed in this book is why trees lose their leaves, how trees store energy and make energy, examples of camouflage with animals, migration of birds and butterflies, insects, spiders and their webs, lizards and mammals big and small. As the book progresses winter then spring then summer is discussed.

The illustrations are drawn and in color (just like the cover), these are not photographs. There are loads of details in the drawings. At the back is an illustrated guide to creatures grouped by their classification (leaves, mammals, fungi) and an index.

The learner is encouraged to do creative projects such as leaf and trunk rubbings. Also keeping a nature journal or notebook to record the findings is recommended.

I am surprised that so much information and creative ideas packed into this small and very inexpensive book. This is one in a series of "one small square" books and I plan to buy more to use in our homeschooling adventure. Now this is science!

This book provides a small instant field trip to those students who might not have access to woods. It gives incredible details of what goes on in one small square of woods. For those who have access to wooded areas for exploration...safety tips are included as well as supplies needed for collecting data while exploring. I teach second grade and use all of the Small Square books in my teaching.

Reading the words of Papaji (also known as Poonjaji) is like eating a beautifully ripe mango. I won't even try to explain that ... but those who've eaten a beautifully ripe mango will understand what I am getting at. There is an ease about the way Papaji responds to the questions in this book, which in a way reminds me of Jean Klein (another great modern teacher of Advaita). His answers are often very simple and direct ... for instance: "Poonjaji, what is freedom?" .... to which he replies: "Freedom is to know your own fundamental nature, your own Self. Nothing else. Freedom is the easiest thing of all to get. You don't even need to think". I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Advaita/Non-Duality. Papaji is one of the essential teachers to read, if you are interested in this subject (along with Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj, Jean Klein and Ramesh Balsekar, to name but a few).

Spiritual Quest Ends Here

This is one of the most illuminating spiritual books I ever read. Poonjaji was an enlightened disciple of Ramana Maharshi. In this book, various people ask Poonjaji questions regarding all kinds of spiritual matters. What comes from Poonjaji are priceless gems of spiritual wisdom which can only originate from the Supreme. The mind is nothing but thoughts. Without thoughts, there is no mind. And behind "no-mind" is the fountain of the Source we long for. It is right within us. We don't have to seek it somewhere else. By questioning "Who am I", one reaches the root of the thought from which arises all other thoughts. Poonjaji makes it so simple and so loving. His love, compassion and laughter emerge right through the pages of the book. My spiritual quest ended when I read Ramana Maharshi and Poonjaji. All questions were answered. The path was shown. No more complexities. If you believe me, this is the one book you must read. You will fall in love with Poonjaji.

The earliest surviving Paul Temple Case from BBC Radio.

For two reasons I welcome this 2004 reissue. My copy of an earlier audio tape version proved to have been transferred at an incorrect speed, so that Martyn C Webster's original production sounded like monkeys chattering at the zoo. A second reason is that it marks the debut of playwright and broadcaster Peter Coke in the title role. Marjorie Westbury is here, of course, as Steve, a part she had already played for nine years.

Frances Durbridge revised "The Gilbert Case" for a radio re-run in 1959, but this is the earlier version from 1954. His sleuth, Paul Temple, becomes involved in the Gilbert Case when a murder victim's father comes to him convinced that the man charged with the murder is innocent. It takes eight tightly scripted half-hour episodes for this belief to be tested, during which the Temples sip martinis and exchange affectionate badinage unscathed by the numerous attempts to blow them and their car to smithereens. Their escapades never take them far away from London in "The Gilbert Case".

Restoration engineers have worked wonders to bring this earliest surviving Paul Temple radio series to acceptable quality. The sound is not quite as crisp as in the later radio cases. With the breaks between episodes edited out, the eight episodes have been made to fit onto 3 CDs.

This was a lot of fun. Paul and his wife Steve remind me of Nick and Nora Charles(The Thin Man). If you like alot of twists and turns, and interesting characters, then you'll like this. It's really well done.Paul and Steve's relationship gives the series humor and warmth. The ending is not spectacular, but the ride there is alot of fun. The BBC really does an excellent job with radio dramas.

Fans of ballet and paper dolls will love this book. It is one of Tom Tierney's best works.
The dancers are faithfully portrayed and the attention to detail of the costumes is excellent. It must have been difficult to decide how to color the costumes since only black and white photos exist of them today, but Tom Tierney's choice of color strikes one as authentic.
I especially liked the costumes from "Scheherazade", "The Blue God" and "The Afternoon of a Faun".

Talented artist, beautiful dolls

These are some of the most beautiful paper dolls I have seen. Tierney does his usual meticulous job at recreating the (often highly eccentric) cosumes of these famous dancers. My only problem with them is that the pose of the Nijinsky doll is often at odds with the actual ballets--he never moved like that in Apres midi d'un faune--but that is minor. This is a treasure for anyone interested in paper dolls or ballet.

How My Faith can also be Our Faith
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-29
How can one religion be both personal and universal? Many people of all religions put their religion on a lofty plain separate from their personal lives. Such people, usually trapped in a concept of unity which says unified people all think alike, cannot conceive of how both unified action and individuality can coexist within the same organization, not even when they belong to such an organization. This concept of intertwined personal identity and unity among people who think, act, look, and believe differently about significant ideas is demonstrated honestly and lovingly throughout Justice St. Rain's "My Baha'i Faith." So also are difficult ideas such as how can the same faith espouse both individual salvation and regeneration of the entire human race, how can both science and religion actually be right, not only how can many religions come from one God, but also how can one distinguish truth from falsehood. The language in which he explores these concepts (and more) is simple and clear without talking down to the reader. This is an intelligent book written by an intelligent man who helps the reader see how to live a life in which mind and heart, body and soul function as a unified whole -- how to practice science without shutting down faith, how to practice religion without denying the truths science teaches, and how to be an individual in a faith which stresses unity. I highly recommend this book to people with any of these questions.

This is a nice story of one journey to spiritual fulfillment, but the Baha'i Faith belongs to no one. It is Baha'u'llah's Faith. No one can own it. Can one have a personal relationship with the prophet-founder? Yes,indeed! St Rain has a habit of using I, me and mine, which is the antithesis of the Baha'i attitude of "us and we"...true unity.

The Chopin Concertos

Whether you have heard these works many times or are new to them, reading and following the score of a masterwork is a way to get yet closer to the piece.

Chopin wrote both concertos when he was 18-20 years of age. His masterly writing for the piano is astounding, and while it's been written and said that he wasn't much of an orchestrator, after reading the score I found this not to be the case. Sure, the piano is the star, spotlight and all, but the orchestra has much to contribute.

There's no finer scores for the money than these by Dover. Recommended!

Indestructible--Frederic Chopin would have approved.

The I. Paderewski edition of Chopin's Piano Concerto's No. 1 and 2 is the best edition I've looked at. The orchestral part is intricately transcribed for the second piano. Like all Dover products, this book and its binding are virtually indestructible...a major plus for the monumental task of mastering the greatest concertos of them all (Concerto No.2 in F minor). A good buy!

I found that the edition of these two masterpieces of the piano concerto literature absolutely indispensible. Saint-Saens was such a master, and his subtle, elegant and powerful writing for piano and the orchestra leaps off the printed score. We need to have the other piano concerti (1, 3 and 5) printed with the same care, and all of his other concerti, particuarly those for cello and violin needs to be treated with the same consideration. An excellent publication that every music lover should have!

I thought that this book was excellent. I found that the edition was very much as Saint Saens intended and I beleive that it was enlightening and informative. The staves were easy to read and the piano part especially was clear. As far as the actual music goes, it is devine. Saint Saens is a personal favorite and owning this score has been a delight. I recommend this book to any appreciator of music and most definately any pianist.

I am 8 years old and was able to read this book in one afternoon because it is so great. It was easy to read but a little challenging...just the way I like my books! It was funny when the pig ran into the tent and caused all kinds of chaos! I think most kids would enjoy reading this book as much as I did.

Pockets tells a lovely story of life through the eyes of a little terrier. When she goes to her third home she wonders painfully if it's "too good to be true." While she manages the other (always larger and goofier!) dogs in her world she also provides invaluable emotional support to her humans in need. This book will steal and heal the heart of anyone who has ever been owned by a terrier! It also includes beautiful black and white drawings of Pockets and her pals - two Labradors, a Boxer, and a kitty!
