As an owner of a 1988 GMC 3/4 ton Suburban, 350/2wd, I use this book an awful lot. This manual provides me with detailed explanations of every type of maintenance I do, plus every type of work I have had done to the truck. From lower control arms to shock mounts to leaf springs to radio wiring to heater cores to AC to tune ups to power steering pumps to headliners to window gaskets -- this book has given me the insight to tackle all these jobs successfully. It is the essential manual for my year truck. If you do your own work, you cannot go wrong -- much better than the other two Chilton manuals I have owned (84 nissan sentra, 91 saab 900).

Marie Antoinette would be jealous!

Review Date: 2007-07-30
I've read a woman can never have too many pairs of shoes. And in this respect, I am all woman. I probably have far too many pair, none too much alike, and who cares?

For my business, which involves Scottish wedding themes, I'm always on the lookout for ways how to further develop Scottish-ness and have fun using Scottish roots to celebrate a wedding.

So I bought A Closet Full of Shoes to see what ideas the authors had and how they might evolve with tartan, Celtic knots, and other Gaelic motifs.

Personally, I don't wear anything with a heel over 1 inch, so I glad to see so many ideas for lower heels and flats. The stiletto heel ideas shown are great, glittery and glitzy...if only I could.

From cover to cover I thoroughly enjoyed the read, the photos, and the creative ideas. It was nice to get directions about "how" to fasten the decorations on the shoes...and stockings!

Eleven creative women contributed photos and directions. There are 49 ideas for ladies, 6 for little girls, 5 work of art displays, and many more photo ideas showing slippers, sandals, flip-flops, sneakers, boots, every day shoes, dressy night-out shoes and wedding shoes.

Embellishment ideas include silk flowers, feathers, glitter and sequins ~ ribbons, trims, fabrics, and lace ~ applique, stencils, beads and buttons ~ computerized photo transfers and painted designs ~ jewelry, including brooches, charms, trinkets, and clip-on earrings. And combinations of these media.

Quotes from Imelda Marcos, Sex and the City, Bette Midler, Oprah Winfrey, Marilyn Monroe, Teddy Roosevelt, Allan Sherman, and Cinderella add a whimsical humor.

My favorite quote was anonymous, "When life gives you rain, splash in the puddles," with a pair of girls rain boots. How long since you've run and splashed in the puddles? Too long, I'll bet.

Long May this Story by Sung

Review Date: 2009-01-04
About a year ago or so Chris sent me a PDF copy of this book and I wondered how I was ever going to get through a whole novel on a laptop. However, I said I'd read it, so, with my wife asleep at my side, I fired up my tried and trusty PowerBook, opened the file and started to read. Seven hours later, the sun shooting early morning rays though the window, I was still reading, Sara was still sleeping, as our son came sneaking into our Sunday morning bed. Usually on Sundays, when I 'm not on the road, I busy myself with Meet the Press, Face the Nation and Morning Edition, but not this day.

The world Chris invented held me captivated. Yes the story was long and it was still far to the end, but I couldn't quit. Chris both took me to the future and to an Arthurian like past where comrades counted for something and villains were larger than life and to be reckoned with. If you really want to know what this book was like, imagine combining an old fashioned Sir Walter Scott story with a Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman novel with a bit of Piers Anthony thrown in. Okay, maybe I haven't exactly got the flavor of the book, but I think I've come close. I liked the story and if you're into scifi, fantasy or stories about the brave, courageous and bold, I think you'll like this book too.

I found this story to be an unexpected trip into a possible future for mankind. Although this specific story was set in the northern ares of Michigan, I found myself questioning what was happening in other parts of the world and the personal challenges of the people. I hope this auther has some ideas for a book to uncover the mysteries of the rest of the his futuristic country. I appreciated the author's skill in describing human detail. I am not an avid reader but I do appreciate good fiction and this story gave my imagination a fun trip.

Christian McCallister writes a futuristic novel which includes adventure, drama, romance, intense human relationships, clashes and conquests, and eventual tranquility. It is an intriguing story right from the start. The reader is introduced to a handsome, well built man in his early thirties, who awakens in the woods without a memory. He begins scavenging for food, learns he can hunt game, recognizes edible fruits and berries and has a strong feeling he was a warrior. He finds a wound on his head and recognizes it caused his memory loss. Later, he finds a horse, believed to be his and also a sword. He begins a journey to find both himself and his purpose ... both of which he feels are related to a sword and a ring he obtained from a stranger who was crossing a rickety old bridge with a Guardian.

A new "Dark Ages" developed which plunged mankind back to living in city-states each of which had chosen different forms of government. Some were democratic, some monarchies combined with elected officials, and others were autocracies. I found this book imaginative, creative, and an intense and satisfying reading experience. It is filled with mystery, drama, romance, warriors fighting for justice, human interest which includes orphans who live in shelters, and well developed characters. The plot is amazing and fascinating ... The lost and lonely stranger discovered his identity. He is Paul Munising, a Prince and warrior who was sent on a mission by his father to conquer his brother Andrew who turned into an evil despot and terrorist among the city-states within the realm formerly known as Michigan. Andrew gathered a group of evil minded men to become his soldiers who stole, killed and otherwise harrassed local populations ... his goal was to conquer several city-states and rule them with his strong hand.

Paul Munising gathered a following, including two of his best friends from childhood with whom he learned his warrior skills. He needed to stop the evil perpetrated by his brother on innocent people ... He needed to bring peace and prosperity back to the innocent people. Along the way, he comes upon an orphan named Ridgeway, who joins his group and endears himself to Paul in ways unimaginable. The dialogue and action scenes are very true-to-life and believable as the story unfolds. There is an interesting character named Diana Almstad, also known as the Wolf Lady because she has an entourage of wolves who accompany her. There is a well done subplot about an unexpected romance to an unlikely character. She ends up ruling a region of land which was considered endangered. After Andrew's defenses weaken, the scenes where he escapes and wanders alone especially in the Dunes, later taken as an anonymous prisoner are excellent. The restoration of the realm of Galord which included a stay with the king and later a cabin at an Inn was an enjoyable chapter. Paul Munising falls in love with Princess Julia. Their romance is nicely worked into the plot. I love how the author used certain modern songs, considered to be ancient folk tunes within the story, such as ""Stand by Me", "Cats Cradle" and "Amazing Grace" the lyrics of which support the context of the plot where they are used, that is true creative genius! The author deftly ties together many of the subplots toward the end to bring about a very satisfying conclusion where there is peace in the territory now called "Mishigan", This is an outstanding first novel and I would love to read a prequel to the story which explains what happened to "Homo novus" or "New man" and why did they leave the earth? Where did they go? It would be a great adventure to understand the circumstances for their extreme and abrupt decision. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]

Decolonization Doesn't Just Happen.

Review Date: 2001-08-26
Filipino Americans carry within themselves their colonial past, in the form of colonial mentality, a collective term for certain types of thought processes, attitudes, behaviour, beliefs, and misinformation. In the concrete case of the Philippines, the brutal military conquest of the country and its economic exploitation by the US was accompanied by what we now recognize as psychological warfare, or indoctrination, that helped shape this colonial mentality. The process of reversing it is named decolonization by Strobel, who appears to be the first writer to have recognized exactly how the process works in individuals. Decolonization is not spontaneous. It can only be individually accomplished by a conscious sustained effort, as explained and described in detail, with numerous examples, in this valuable volume. There is no heavy rhetoric here, no fist shaking, no fancy political polemics, just patient explanations. Most Filipino Americans have the potential to decolonize themselves, and to thereby enhance their personal dignity, self-esteem, and understanding of their true place in the world, and this is the essential guidebook.

mind detox breakthrough for Filipinos

If you ever wanted to know more about certain Filipino quirks such as why there are so many Philippine mestizo movie stars and models ' or why many Filipinos believe that imported or "i-stateside" things are superior'or why there are Filipinos who are embarrassed to say they are Filipino' then this book could help you find out why. "Coming Full Circle" by Leny Strobel talks about the Filipino psychological handicap called colonial mentality. Better yet, this book tells a Filipino probable ways that one could cure colonial mentality in oneself if they ever chose to. For a Filipino, reading this book (even just parts at a time) can already help their mind detoxify from colonial psychological rubbish.

This is a brave book of a Filipino woman's study and exploration of the phenomenon of Filipino's lack of ethnic pride and the inability to articulate or manifest a strong sense of ethnic identity (colonial mentality) and the process of unlearning it (decolonization). The book is a ground breaking, significant contribution to Filipino community because it is a lucid articulation of the predicament and struggle within the process of finding Filipino identity---individual and collective, whole and healed.

Both Philippine and U.S. educational systems do not tell a complete story of U.S. colonial history in the Philippines, but by reading this book, I finally came to know more about it. Just a note, the Philippines was also colonized by Spain, but this book does not cover Spanish colonial history and influences. Still, this book is enough to better understand how colonial mentality came about.

The book gives concrete facts and terms to connect to what I have already been going through in my life when I tackled thoughts and concepts of colonial mentality, ethnic pride and individuality on my own terms since my Philippine university days in the 80s. I believe that many other Filipinos will also be able to make a few connections with the information and narratives in this book.

Leny Strobel's work is both scholarly and intuitive. It not only explains and informs on an academic level, but it also contains insightful thoughts, honest feelings and personal stories. The book illustrates expressions and appearances of colonial mentality through accounts of the author's and that of others. I found many of these people's experiences similar with my own and with Filipinos both in the U.S. and the Philippines.

Most significantly, the book talks about the process of decolonization not only in theory but also actual practice. Strobel recognizes that decolonization is a progression of healing and in the book we read that it is "a process of learning to love one's self again' of learning to face the truth and learning to tell the truth'learning to draw up the powers from the deep like before' going back to our roots'" and more. She cites ways for such wholistic self-recovery and discusses what she and the field study participants acted out and how these actions gradually pushed out the different manifestations of colonial mentality in their lives.

Strobel also helps the reader realize that the healing process is both an individual effort and a community one. She helps the reader recognize that there is a continual need to work on one's own identity while at the same time interacting within a social context. If you haven't already been aware, this book can point out to you how colonial mentality affects yours and others' choices and actions; how we each might share in each other's ignorance and silent incapacitation; and how we can affect each other's growth. Many times the field participants would share their own experiences of overcoming colonial mentality (by educational and/or cultural exploration) with their families, friends and peers and in turn their sharing would somehow have an effect on those they told.

Although Strobel's field study was done in the U.S., the material of this book is not only significant to Filipino-Americans. It can also be relevant to the Philippines and Filipinos in other parts of the world. And the academic discourse of "Coming Full Circle" cites concepts and works of Filipinos and non-Filipinos, and those that are published in the Philippines, the U.S., Canada and London.

Ignorance can make for complacency and cynicism. Knowledge is power. This book shares knowledge and stories. Consider new insight and strength when you know your facts and can name the identity struggles you're going through and discern how to get over it. This book can be an opening to a new way of looking at things. It can help you realize a way or ways that can become or already are part of your ethnic identity process. A Filipino who comes to be centered within his identity and self, will want to know more and DO more, for his or herself and for others. This is the path of the brave Filipino.

I'm extremely happy and satisfied with this book! I open it and play from it (either the Harpsichord part on my piano or the Orchestra part on my Violin) every day. The print is crisp and clear and not too small. I am not surprised that this book is a wonderful score, being that I'm always satisfied with Dover books. I trust that this book is sure to please all (or most) of those who buy it. This book has strengthened my opinion of Bach being the greatest and most genius composer and I learn from it every time I look over its contents. My next book purchase on Amazon will certainly be by Bach and a Dover publication!

This score is an example of Dover's excellent work. Any Dover score I ever perchased was a great buy, and this one is no exception. The instrumentation is listed on every line of music. The score is clear and very legible. I purchased it for excerpts for my orchestral auditions, but would certainly use it if I had to conduct any on the works in it. This score is a must for any aspiring conductor's collection.

These concerti, are probably the most performed, and most famous concerti in the world, especially, the grande, and the hard as ever Emperor concerto. This score, is very good, because it contains the table of contents, the people whom Beethoven dedicated the concerto to and an added bonus, his cadenza for the first 4 concertos. Buy this book, it is worth your $15.00!

I absolutely love this book! My jewelry is a mess, and this book has inspired me to get it organized and learn what I have. There are so many good ideas on how to make old pieces new, how to buy jewelry, protecting your jewelry, how to wear jewelry with your own fashion, etc. The illustrations are smart and beautiful, very colorful. I love all the little client anecdotes from Susan, like the engagement ring that almost got lost in the mail or the client who wanted an "8 carrot" ring. She obviously has a ton of experience in this industry, and it really shows in this book. Full recommendation to everyone who wears jewelry!

I was about as jewelry-impaired as they come. You know the type: own a few good pieces and a bunch of costume jewelry of questionable attractiveness, wear the same stuff all the time, keep jewelry tangled and clumped in messy drawers, never get around to having things appraised or repaired or remade, and totally clueless about how to get the most enjoyment out of my jewelry. I didn't even keep up with what I had, or what goes with what, or what to do with unwanted pieces.

But no more! Thanks to a jewel of a book by gemologist Susan Eisen, I am one happy - and informed - camper now! You will love the highly readable, cutely illustrated, extremely helpful suggestions and stories that Ms. Eisen includes. Every page was an eye opener for me and totally useful. Any female from age 14 up will absolutely love this delightful book.
