Sharing the joys of nature between parents and children is a rare topic. This book is a simple, yet joyful, description of a parent's decision that bedtime doesn't always take precedence over discovering nature.

My mother read this to me while we were living on a farm in southwestern Wisconsin, where this book is set, which made the stories even more important to me.

A wonderful bedtime story for any child longing to see the natural world at night.

Should be required reading for children

This book describes the author's nighttime walks with her children during each of a year's thirteen full moons. Through these chapters the reader experiences the thrill and awe of moonlit discoveries. Reading this book to children is a wonderful way to introduce them to nature. Most children and parents who read this book will want to follow its example, and both will benefit if they do. It would be an excellent resource for elementary school teachers. Very well written and illustrated.

This book is probably my favorite Hautala novel of all time!
The book has it all: plot twists, suspense, horror, and plenty of chills!
This edition is beautifully illustrated by Alan M. Clark and the overall presentation is one of the best you will ever come across.

A very nice book, both in storyline and appearance!

Hautala should be proud.

FACING "THE WILDMAN"

Hautala is back in full force with this tale of long lost friendships gone wrong and the killer instinct hovering closely by. His protagonist--a forty-something divorcé with some trusting issues, specially toward one of his former Camp Tapiola buddies who may or may not be what he seems--is the ultimate anti-hero, meaning with no hidden superpower or James Bond-like suaveness to describe him. Hautala goes (again) for the normal and delivers one of his most defined character to date. Sad, lost, envious--even of his fellow mates--but with a will for living despite this childhood ache that still haunts him... Only when he's forced to face the obvious concerning one of his presumed friends will he realize just how important it is to rely on his inner self to survive this mid-life crisis disguised as a killer on the loose theme. Of course the author scarcely rely on shock value to tell his story, aiming instead for the atmospheric feel while building up an ever-present plot which includes some well-drawn action sequences and some surprisingly touching moments. THE WILDMAN feels like an above average low-budgeter; you know the one that invades fall screens just before Halloween's time to become a favorite at the box office. Predict the same for this latest Hautala. It is one heck of a bolt-on ride.-----Martin Boucher

This is a really good book. I read it over and over again. My Grandma is Perla Fox, and the really cool part is, is that I have a page with my brother. The book is also dedicated to us. Look for the page: Ben and Rebecca are cleaning their room.......

I am very happy.

This is a great book to start your child on the right road. I recommend this book for young children to get them started pretending and using their imagination. I really enjoy reading this book to my two-year-old daughter. All the "wooodles" with the different colors, swirling figures and designs keep her attention. We spend time going through this book her telling me what the figures are (sometimes they can be something different than what I see). She is expanding her mind with the help of the "wooodles". She is always asking what every thing is and this book is no exception.

Fun, imaginative, with amazing artwork. What a great idea!

This book is a great mix of cute rhymes, really cool artwork, and fun activities. My two daughters love it. My eight year old finds wooodles everywhere now, and my three year old likes to look at the pictures and listen to the rhymes. The activities are fun and I didn't have to go out and buy a thing in order to do them. It really opens their eyes to all of the possibilities in the world and stimulates them to use their imaginations in a new way. I would highly recommend this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed Yard Full of Sun, renegade horticulturist Scott Calhoun's humorous and detailed account of the creation of his family's Arizona home and garden. Mr. Calhoun's funny anecdotes about the challenges of adobe home construction and his startlingly honest observations of married life enhance, but do not obscure the wealth of fascinating information he has compiled about drought-resistant plants, garden design, and water conservation. The author's authentic voice and the rich details he includes make me want to drink Tecate under the Mesquite tree in the Calhouns' backyard and eat tacos at their favorite tire repair shop. The glorious photographs provide endless ideas for the design and decoration of outdoor living spaces, and the useful appendices should prove invaluable to novice and experienced desert gardeners alike. Perhaps what I enjoyed the most, however, was the candid and sincere manner in which Scott Calhoun shares the excitement and beauty, as well as the disagreements and discoouragement one encounters when a dream is pursued with passion.

Excellent Desert Landscaping Adventure

Scott takes us on a very personal journey from the building of his home through the design and planting of his garden in the Sonoran desert of Tucson, Arizona. The book is packed with marvelous photos of the house and garden plants, flowers and trees that comprise his little domestic world. The photo quality and color rendition are quite excellent and provide ample evidence of the remarkable variety of plant hues that are made possible by the magical combination of water and brilliant southern Arizona sunshine. Those unfamiliar with this kind of environment will be surprised by the extraordinary palette of color that Scott has lovingly created. He also takes great pride in showing that his award-winning garden, featured in SUNSET and HORTICULTURE magazines,is not an east-coast transplant, but an authentic representation of his region.

The beginning gardener as well as the experienced landscape designer will find an abundance of information and creative inspiration from the first to the last page. The appendices in the back for example, are a real gold mine of useful material.

Even if you don't live in the Sonoran desert, you will enjoy Scott's journey and his warm, relaxed narrative style of writing. However, make no mistake. Behind this easy-going approach dwells the strong will of a young man with the knowledge, experience and determination to infuse regional landscape authenticity with beauty and power. Readers everywhere will find this an invigorating combination.

I have lived in Phoenix for 25 years. I have a large lot and little success in landscaping. If it looked good it took too much time to maintain and my water bills were sky high. What to do? After 6 weeks in a wheelchair and an irrigation failure I happened on Scott Calhoun's book. He has so many new and practical ideas that will produce a good looking landscape and not be a slave to it. Living in Tucson, he is very savvy about conserving water more than we are in Phoenix. He talks about harvesting water and grading a property to better direct rainfall to planting beds. New ideas for me. I am really quite excited about the opportunities that I recognize now from reading this book.
Oh and if that isn't enough, the book is quite beautiful. Lots of color photography. Many plant varieties are pictured. The writer generously shares his experience of learning about building a "green" home and surrounding it with a true Sonoran desert landscape.
I have lots of books on desert gardening and they all have merit. This is the first one that has given me a new insight into where I live and my responsibility to the ecology of my spot in the desert.
A true inspiration to me.

This book is well-worth the read. It begins by hypothesizing the genesis of competitive running, and transitions into an Olympic 100-mile endurance event that follows a suite of international runners as they pursue their dreams of winning gold. The author does a nice job of character development that makes each runner unique, yet articulates why there is a cadre of people who are just born to run. The contrast of their personalities, melded with the similarities of their passions makes a great backdrop to the story. It made me wish there was such an event in the Olympics!!

Must read for running -exercise and health nuts like me

I have 8 prints that don't appear in the book from 1865-1870. Want to find more info about my prints to include their value (at least an estimate). Pictures in the book are beautiful and pretty true to the actual work...except the real ones have a little "browner" paper. The history in the beginning is also very well done, and helpful in knowing the art. Thanks JoAnne.

While it would be rare to find a Godey's book with every fashion print in it, this book gives you an excellent variety of the best dresses from Godey's. The descriptions give an idea of color mixes, fabric and decoration. This book is a great reference tool for the Lady Civil War or Mid-Victorian Reenactor or Costume Designer.

All Ahead Full takes real life experiences and logically develops a road map to achieve success in both personal and business life. One may choose to follow or ignore the lessons learned by the Author but you can not dispute the logic used to reach the conclusions which are detailed at the close of each chapter. While the book is appropriate for all ages I believe it is especially developmental for young people who are in the early stages of their carrear and family life. The author subtlety forces the reader to assess your priorities while maintaining an ethical attitude and direction.
Very enjoyable and fun to read, well done.

I consider myself an avid reader of leadership and motivational books. I truly appreciate learning from the experiences of others. However, I often find myself getting lost in the book and struggling to find the message.

All Ahead Full is written so that you cannot miss the meaning behind it. The end of chapter summaries concisely state what lessons are to be learned. The natuical themed chapter titles are words of wisdom in themselves...Next time I'm thrown off course, I will remember "Set and Drift" and know that I can adjust my course to ensure I reach my goal.

John Mann's experience with the United States Navy clearly taught him life lessons that some may never know. All Ahead Full ensures that anyone can reap the rewards, without spending months out at sea on a submarine.
