I have really enjoyed reading "Calling Our Spirits Home:Gateways to Full Consciousness" by Carla Woody

I have been on a self-improvement/self-awareness path for the last few years. All things that I have done seem to lead to spirituality.

What I have really enjoyed about Carla's book is that it helped me realize that you can have spirituality on your terms. There is no right and wrong. It doesn't matter which path your life has taken you can still improve on it and create the life that was meant to be yours. It was particularly exciting for me because I live in Ohio and enjoyed the Ohio references.

I had bought Carla's book for a friend in the midst of changing careers in hopes of influencing her to follow her soul's intention with greater self-confidence. I read the book myself in order to have better discussions that I know would arise as she employs the book in her life. Well, I in for a surprise...

As a guy who has spent the past half-decade working through personal, emotional pain, feeling I now have a better understand my life (in work, relationship, etc.) I still discovered for myself new paradigms for approaching Life in Calling Our Spirits Home: new ways of looking at the pain and frustrations I still harbor as positive guides toward understanding in relationships, overcoming fears of inadequacy that yet hinder my life's work. In short, I feel I was led to this book through my good intentions to help a friend and was rewarded in kind.

The book is simply written and easily understood. Always pertinent, potentially difficult concepts are wonderfully illustrated through examples of many Individuals' struggles and their interpretations leading to eventual understanding and changes for the better. I found the stories easy to relate to since they often pertain to my own life's experiences, and almost always add a new dimension.

I know this book will do wonders for my friend as it has already helped me in my Life-Work. I hope it will also help you.

Awakening Toward Spiritual Consciousness

The path of transformation and growth toward wholeness can be a lonely, confusing and sometimes frustrating process. What I got from reading Carla's book was validation that my search, albeit eclectic, was not unusual. The path of spiritual consciousness or return to Source has not felt linear, rational, or logical to me. It has been more like as written on the back of this book, "a maze of possibilities," with numerous stops and starts; blazing new trails where it feels like no one else has gone before, and then often retracing my steps to just start all over again. After turning the last page of the book I had a feeling of being nurtured and validated for my "out of the box" way of searching, and a deep sense of compassion for my personal struggles in answering the Call.

This is a book rich with references and resources from others who have traveled this road, a wonderful amalgamation of spiritual wisdom for which I am grateful to have as a "flashlight" to illuminate the course on those dark nights seeking wisdom and guidance.

While this book didn't give me the answers to all the questions I've been asking, it did remind me and suggest ways to "live" the questions. And how to live the questions feels more important to me at this stage than the answers.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for inspiration and/or guidance while trekking the evolutionary path of the soul.

Just like Judy Garland, I fell in love with Clark Gable when I, too, realized that he was "the nicest fella in the movies." And I'm sure that Judy would also fall in love with Tom Tierney's brilliant homage to our hero, Clark Gable Paper Dolls in Full Color.

This is a gorgeous collection -- a tribute to Gable's career and the author's amazing talents. This book belongs in your collection.

A moving, true-life story

I was fortunate enough to be able to preview this moving story of Anders and Sanna's battle with Lupus (aka "Dr. Disease"). But it's not just a medical recounting... far from it. The heart of this book lies in the personal battles the pair face with courage and dignity as *together* they fight this condition and the effects it has on not only Sanna's health, but their releationship, their home, and at rare times, their love. Beautiful and thought-provoking. I highly recommend this for not only those struggling with a partner or family member's medical condition, but also for those whom wish to gain insight into what the "other" person goes through as they watch the person they love in their struggles. Isn't there a six-star option on this thing?

I liked it

I really enjoyed the book and finished it the day it came in the mail. It sounds like Sanna is the love of the author's life. And I not only learned about how to cope with a loved one's disease, but I felt inspired by the love story behind the story of the illness. I also appreciated the many humorous moments.

Useful Advice And A Touching Love Story

Review Date: 2005-02-13
This book lives up to its subtitle, offering useful advice to partners faced with a life (and relationship) changing illness. With humor, compassion and common sense, the author addresses the issues that confront a couple when a third party, whom he calls "Dr. Disease" enters the picture. According to the introduction, this book began as a journal the author kept after his fiancee was diagnosed with Lupus. Using examples from their experience, he offers practical advice for dealing with the difficulties that any illness inevitably brings. His wry humor keeps the tone light and balanced, and he offers both good advice and hope to those facing a similar challenge. Since it is their personal story, it is also a touching tribute to the power of love.

HUGE reference book on spirits, paranormal, psychic stuff, stones, crystals, people, places, things, and whatever else. A full sized book, 850 pages of material. If you can't find a little something about it here, I'd be real surprised. (Example: "table-tilting," tipping or turning is the crudest form of communication with the subconscious self or with extraneous intelligences. Yet tables have been associated with divination and communication with spirits since antiquity. . .") It goes on to tell you some history. We have a 20-page tiny font index alone for you to look up whatever topic you need to. It's written in such a way that you can either just read your way through topics in paragraph form, like Crystal stuff, or you can look up a specific item, like Tai Chi. A ton of info for the money, in encyclopedia type fashion.

In searching for material to send to a prisoner through a prision ministry, I chanced upon this gem of a book. This book is a wonderful companion to anyone in an enviroment that destroys one's faith, and an excellent guide to the non-Christian in understanding Christian Faith. Above all it is the perfect tool for the materialistic and carnal Christian, who has been mis-guided about what faith truly is. The author was truly inspired giving us an illumination of traditional doctrine and power of Faith.

Amazing stories

Review Date: 2006-10-25
This collection of short stories is superior in every way. Each is told from the first person point of view, both male and female, and take place in different eras, yet this gifted author transports you to a time and place experienced through a unique perspective. Most stories have a quirk or twist, like those sidebars you see in the newspaper about oddities such as quintriplets, but the tales show the complexities behind the unusual. This would be a wonderful gift for anyone who enjoys good writing and thoughtful stories.

Over the falls

This collection opens with an anecdote about a woman who goes over Niagara Falls in a barrel--and survives. Throughout these stories, many other characters struggle to keep their heads above water while flailing about for a lifeline, and their struggles for survival provide the impetus for the stories. Especially engaging are the children, who act with tremendous grace in the face of cataclysmic events--the death of a father, a flu epidemic--and find, almost by accident, a way to survive. Janet Bland's creativity is on display in these elegant and original stories, which move gently toward endings that seem oddly inevitable. I look forward to more work from her pen.

Janet Bland's A Fish Full of River is filled with the sort of stories that draw readers in with smooth dialogue before beckoning them back for a second reading to probe the symbolism and subjective narration. It is amazing that a single author can adopt the perspectives of so many vastly different protagonists and still tell each story as if it was her own life she is describing--not just laying out a plot but bringing to life the world of the protagonist through their own eyes. She describes the idiosyncrasies of those around the protagonist with a skill that comes from sharp observation and a mixture of empathy and honesty. The characters have unusual qualities--one is nearly mute, another beset by seizures--but their strangeness is treated as a window into universal human feelings. Bland effortlessly brings the reader into the world of the protagonist, but rather than emphasizing the sensational side of their abnormal world she makes the oddness mingle with the ordinary: instead of being a spectator at a show the reader becomes an explorer of the human condition. The book highlights the characters' aspirations, some born of drug addiction or traumatic experiences and others from the characters' peculiar ways of viewing the world. Bland presents her characters' assumptions in a way that reveals their absurdity and makes the reader question their own assumptions. She takes the idea of assumptions further and looks at how people's mental habits affect their lives just as much as strongly held ideas. All in all, A Fish Full of River is an enjoyable and though-provoking collection of stories that can be read as a vacation book but rewards close reading and re-reading.

Simple financial advice that can be understood by anyone and that will work
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2009-01-07
Many opinions have been put forward regarding the recent global economic downturn; one commonly mentioned is that the consuming public spent beyond their means. While it is clear that this is not the only reason for the problems, it is a major contributor. Using charts, graphs and textual explanations, Watts puts forward a simple yet effective description of how a person can survive and even thrive to achieve some level of financial independence and security.
It begins with the simple of act of considering saving as an investment rather than as stockpiling for greater desires. In other words, don't save your money just so that you can buy the bigger luxury item, but save your money so that it can be invested in something that will give a return. In other words use your money to make or save money. Granted this is simplistic, but achieving financial security is a simple task. Either you earn more money or spend less, the only other possibilities, such as inheritance or winning the lottery are most unlikely.
Above all, like nearly everything else that can be achieved, it takes self-discipline to create and retain the wealth that you desire and need. Watts cannot provide that, no one can as that is internally generated. What he does give you is within the limits of possibility, sound and simple advice for how to get started.

A Practical Flow!

Although I am generally not a fan of financial books, I thought I would give this one a whirl and be open minded. I am so glad I did! This book really helped me take a look at long term goals and plans, rather hoping for immediate answers. I like how the author addresses making an action plan and suggests that "only we can decide how we will spend our time and money, and what we will make of our life." Practical, concrete advice on taking control of your financial future. Don't miss out on this one!

Easy-to-grasp financial education

Review Date: 2008-10-27
The title and the first chapters of this book make an amazing comparison. Watts delineates in words and very clear diagrams something we all know well--the flow of our time. He then uses the same terms and schematics to illustrate how similar this is for the flow of money in our lives. This approach is inspired. We immediately grasp something that is difficult in terms of something more familiar. For once we are going to get some answers about why the middle class struggles with money so much. Even better, here is what we can do to move beyond that struggle and, like the rich, create assets that produce passive income and capital gains.

With financial markets in such uproar, this might actually be a good time for a reader to evaluate what it is he or she wants to accomplish beyond "getting by." There are no easy solutions as ballyhooed by late-night infomercials. But there are answers: The new piece of the puzzle is that we need to make "investments in life assets, and those assets may result in saved time and increased effectiveness..." This does mean that we have to assume responsibility for our own lives and successes, whereas in the past we could blame our failures on our jobs, our bad luck and our lack of opportunities. It also means avoiding some of the spending traps condoned by a retail culture--traps cleverly camouflaged with tasty-looking bate: "borrow and spend," "save and spend," "deferred spending", "expense-generating possessions." The first step, if you are going to become wealthy, rather than just look wealthy--is to live below your means.

There is a practical list of suggested readings at the end of the book. I am familiar with three or four of these and they convey the same common sense, "you can do it," attitude of "The Flow of Time and Money." The diagrams on pages 82 and 83 are a little less clear than the explanations of the benefits of incorporation. And it is interesting to look over the "Sources of Wealth" in light of the present recession. My guess is that Watts wouldn't change any of these but he might add some cautionary footnotes under "stock market investing" and "real estate" that might not have been necessary in happier times.

Still, the concepts he explains are good to understand in good times and bad and the principle of establishing passive income is the answer to self-sufficiency. The last section, "Realizing Your Dreams," reaches beyond the topic at hand. It may seem a little "over-achiever" for some, but realistically who is going to read this book if not a person striving to improve his or her life and looking for the tools to do it. And there is real insight in his conclusion about the synergy between skills. This would be a great book for couples to discuss together. Better yet, for families. If we, as teenagers, got the kind of financial education "The Flow of Time and Money" provides, we would not be in such dire economic straits today.

A wonderful advise

This book gives amazing advises of how to be responsible with our financial life and - actually - become rich - by making the right choices of what to do with our employment income. It reminded me a bit of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", but "The Flow of Time and Money" is much easier to read and to understand. Short, with clear concepts, neatly exposed and organized, this book became actually my handbook of how to accumulate wealth! Like Ray Kurzweil, I believe it is a must read for everybody who wants to have consciousness of were we stand in our life financially, and what to do about it; when we actually feel, we deserve much more then what we have so far. Good news: it is suitable for EVERY age. Thanks you, Mr. Watts!
