I laughed so hard the first time I read this book to my girls that they actually got worried. This book rings true for just about anyone living in the South, especially those with ties to the farming life. We checked it out from the library originally, but have bought 4 copies so far. A must read!

Reader engagement makes this an enjoyable experience.

This book is a delightful story, lending itself to read-aloud with Kentucky country dialect and a repeated story pattern. Lower elementary readers (K-2) are likely to miss the essence of the story and be disappointed in the ending, which reuires a degree of maturity and abstract thinking to appreciate. The most significant events in the story are those that take place in the reader's imagination. While the menfolk, who are repeatedly outwitted by the elusive white cow, place their quarry on a higher ahd higher pedestal, the reader is clued in to the cow's antics by the detail in the text and pictures, and by the background comments Mama makes. This book elicits so much engagement on the part of the reader that it can't help but be enjoyed!

Enjoyable for all ages, with more to discover each time read

There is much to like about this book, whatever the age of the person reading (or being read to). The story is wonderful and wonderfully told, with a very distinctive voice that makes it fun to read over and over and over and over. The detailed pictures are beautiful, and each reading can reveal new details, especially in the smaller 'frames' at the bottom of the pages, which tell more of the story. And if you see a real white cow in your travels, be prepared to discuss where that wayward cow might have come from.

A story that holds the attention of both parent and child.

Hunting the White Cow is a favorite book at our house. It is one of the few books that even mom wants to read again, as soon as it is over. The reading level is designed for a school-aged child, but my 2 year old will sit captivated through the entire story. We read a lot of picture books, but it is rare that a picture book has such a thoughtful and well developed story. The pictures are beautiful and help to illustrate some of the quaint references for our suburban children, who might not recognize a tobacco plant or a "saw brier" if they saw it. I can tell already that some day when my boy is grown, he will come across this book, maybe with his own children, and he will say, I loved this stroy when I was child.

A fresh and unusual twist on a classic fairytale

Review Date: 2002-07-10
Jim Harris's "Jack and the Giant: A Story Full of Beans" is a fresh and unusual twist on the classic "Jack and the Beanstalk" fairytale. The twist here is that the story is a western, complete with adobe castle, people spouting slang like "hornswoggled!" and a character named Annie Okey-Dokey.

Harris has succeeded masterfully in making the story new and approachable for even young readers for whom the classic tale might be a little bit too bloody. The illustrations are an absolute hoot--colorful, detailed, and abrim with delightful asides where tiny mice, rabbits, buffalo and other animals wink and grin at each other with quips appearing in cartoon-like balloons. It's all visually reminiscent of the very best of master illustrator Wallace Tripp.

This really is a lot of fun for adults and kids alike, and rewards repeated reading with all the fun visual stuff you'll continue to notice.

A rip-roaring retelling of the classic fairytale!

Author/illustrator, Jim Harris, has created an in-your-face western retelling of the classic fairytale, Jack and the Beanstalk that will have you and your children laughing out loud. Wild Bill Hiccup is the western version of the giant and a magic lasso that turns french fries into gold, a banjo that plays music on its own and a furry buffalo that leaves golden buffalo chips replaces the classic story's standards. Jim Harris' illustrations are hysterically one of a kind and keep you begging for more. Luckily for us, he is a prolific author/illustrator and he continues to recreate these delightful classics.

Western flavored 'Jack and the Giant' is a real hoot!

This atypical version of the well known fairy tale is a delight to both young and old alike. The creative storytelling carries the reader along like a tumbleweed in the wind, not knowing what twists and turns will happen next. Jack is the hero trying to save the day and the Bar None Ranch, along with his sidekick the yellow tabby cat. The clever adaptation of this old tale is refreshing and downright funny. I found myself laughing at the antics of the tabby throughout the story. My favorite character is the one who gives the giant the gold in a very original way (I won't give it away, you'll have to read it for yourself!) 'Jack and the Giant' captures the spirit of the west in its delightful illustrations. Each page holds a reader's attention while they try to take in all the action in the pictures. Jim Harris is a tremendously talented illustrator who seems to bring to life each of his characters with the ink of his pen. He truely has a gift to share with children of all ages! Anyone who loves fairy tales will enjoy 'Jack and the Giant' by Jim Harris.

Turn on your CD of Judy at Carnegie Hall and play with Judy Garland through her major career achievements. There are 30 wonderful costumes, and the likeness to Judy is amazing.

Tom Tierney obviously devoted himself to producing a magnificent tribute to Judy's career. If you're a fan, you know that you have to have these Judy Garland Paper Dolls for your collection.

You don't have to be a Judy Garland fan to enjoy these paper dolls. The likenesses on all three dolls are superb. The last doll showing Miss Garland towards the end of her career captures the passion she expressed when performing.
Costumes from most of Judy Garland's famous films are included. Tom Tierney's drawings of the costumes from "The Wizard of Oz" (with her friends in the background), "Meet Me in St.Louis" and "The Pirate" were my favorites.

Garland is GRAND!!

I loved this book. It was simple to read and apply the directions. I am a machine quilter and much of what was offered I was already familiar with, but my familiarity was gained through much trial and error. I would have saved myself a lot of time to have this book at the start of my efforts in machine quilting. The photos are very clear, the projects are way simple and I learned some new tricks, such as the way to make a "light" table by stretching a piece of Plexiglass over two chairs with a light underneath. I especially like how Alex freely admitted that she was afraid of machine quilting but finally just did it. So many quilters I know are in her old shoes! Thank you, Alex!

I have been wanting to learn more about machine quilting my own quilts. I borrowed a copy of this book and it was very interesting and gave me some great ideas. Of course I had to buy my own copy. I found it to be easy to understand and fun to read too. I can't wait to put the things I learned into practice

This book is the clear concise machine quilting book I've been looking for. The chapters are laid out in an approachable manner and the information conveyed in clear text. You'll have all the tools you need to get started, trouble shoot and complete your project. And projects.. there's several delightful projects in the book ranging from the simple to the complex.. something for everyone.

Hunger for more information, Alex graciously included information on other books and resources. We can count on Alex Anderson to continue to provide us with the information we need to get started and keep quilting. She's a real professional. I congratulate her on her continued success.

My 5 and 6 year old boys liked this even more than The Dragon of Doom. As I read it to them, they laughed out loud at Moongobble's magical failures and particularly his curses, "Dad rat monkey fat!" There are many engaging illustrations, although I always wish for more in a book like this. Particularly recommended to younger readers who aren't yet ready for Spiderwick. Can't wait for the Evil Elves!

The Moongobble books, while at a 9 YO reading independent reading level, are fine fare for the 5 and 6 YO set who enjoy a good solid story time. The ideas are simple while the vocabulary leaps just enough ahead to make 'em reach. Great stories, great vocabulary and excellent illustrations make these fine gifts for small kids who love to be read to, and bigger kids who love to read.

These are pretty and colorful patterns. They are "dated" in the sense that they are patterns that were popular probably a century ago. Some of this I find odd (like children's heads popping out of flowers and fruits) but there aren't too many of those and maybe some people like children "emerging" from fruits and flowers! All around a good selection, I would think most people would find much to their liking in these designs.

This book has 305 images to choose from. Lots of strong vibrant colors, pretty good quality in terms of being clear (not blurry), some have people faces in them (e.g. flowers with people faces in the center), they range in size from 1" to 1/4 page in size. Some really pretty pansy images. I'm finding it to be a really good resource.
