Great combo of storiesReview Date: 2007-09-23
Great!Review Date: 2007-02-19
"Killing Moon": Ross Marshall is the latest in a line of werewolves descended from a single forebear - apparently around the time of the druids - who dared to ask the gods for a gift . . . although that gift was granted, it comes with a price; baby girls are stillborn and many of the boys die when they are teens and first try to transform. Ross is a bachelor and determined to stay that way, as he is afraid he will turn out to be like his father - a very cruel man - as well as afraid to even try to have children. However, he is also curious if, genetically, anything can be done. So, he calls a genetic testing lab and asks for someone to come out and test his blood. Dr. Megan Sheridan is sent. It is love at first sight (of course).
Wrapped around their love story is Ross' attempt to bring a serial killer to justice (he works as a PI). Also, his friend - Detective Jack Thornton - has become suspicious about Ross' involvement in the death of a serial killer 5 years ago.
Overall, this was really a good book. Lots of thrills and chills and the dynamic tension between the romantic leads was well done - in a REALISTIC manner, rather than the typical romance novel approach, which is to have the two romantic partners dislike each other for no good reason until toward the end of the book where they subsequently fall in love for no apparent reason as well. For fans of paranormal romance action thrillers with a twist, you'll like this one!
With "Edge of the Moon" - her follow-up to "Killing Moon" - Rebecca York continues her exploration of the world she has created and expands upon it. The main focus in this book is on Detective Jack Thornton and a beautiful woman who reported her roommate missing - which roommate is later found dead, killed by a vicious serial murderer who is now focused on Jack's new-found love. I hate to say more so as to avoid ruining the suspense, so I'll leave it at that - just add my accolades. I plan to keep going on this series as I can. It is terrific.
two delightful paranormal romantic mysteriesReview Date: 2006-02-08
"Killing Moon". Private Investigator Ross Maxwell seeks evidence against human predator serial killer Donald Arnott. Ross shifts shape into a wolf and passes through a perimeter breach he created on Donald's property. However, Donald sees and shoots Ross, who escapes. The next day genetic research scientist Megan Sheridan of Bio Gen Labs visits her client Ross at his home to do a work up on him. She finds him feverish from his wound so she cleans the wound, provides the antibiotic that he happens to need, and puts on fresh bandages. As he heals Ross worries because he knows Arnott stalks him, the Montgomery County, Maryland police suspect him in a murder investigation, and the CEO of Megan's company is acting strange. Still, Ross is angriest with Megan for not fleeing from him because wolves mate for life. Using the premise that lycanthropy is a genetic disorder, KILLING MOON is a delightful supernatural private investigator romance starring two charming lead characters.
These are two delightful paranormal romantic mysteries.

Dynamite Duo of Paranormal Sensual DelightsReview Date: 2006-06-18
- In KILLING MOON private investigator Ross Maxwell has been hired to search for a missing woman. Ross' unique skill to track and find people is a secret he guards closely, for he has been both blessed and cursed with the ability to shape shift into a wolf. In his wolf shape he discovers her body along with evidence that suggests the murderer is a serial killer. When the killer comes upon Ross in his wolf form he is shot while escaping. Wounded, Ross was able to shape shift back to human form and return to his home where Dr. Megan Sheridan, a genetic research scientist sent from the lab he had contacted days before, finds him unconscious. Mesmerized by the beautiful naked man, Megan cleans his wounds and when he regains consciousness their mutual attraction is intense. Ross knows that wolves mate for life and yet he knows he must fight the attraction. He is well aware of the heartache of involving a woman in his life; not only the horror of her discovering his true condition but of the danger of the serial killer who is now tracking him.
*** This first novel had a marvelously intense suspense plot as well as a wonderfully sensual aspect featuring two very emotionally wounded lead characters. Ross and Megan each had very difficult childhood backgrounds that the author used to capitalize on in defining their characterizations. The author did a marvelous job of crafting Ross and her description of the transformation back and forth of man to beast was brilliantly done. This was a fast paced action tale with a perfect balance of secondary characters to carry and add depth to this highly engrossing read. What a marvelous beginning to ensnare the reader in wanting to continue with this `Moon' trilogy.
EDGE OF THE MOON
- If I thought the first novel, KILLING MOON, in this duo was exciting and terrific I can now only think of it as an `appetizer' for this second book that combines a powerful police procedural with a very dark paranormal fantasy. This one definitely had me on the edge of my seat and biting my nails!
Although you will again revisit some of the characters from the first novel, the story is centered on Jack Thornton, a Montgomery County, Maryland police detective. Assigned to check out a missing persons report of a young woman, Jack meets her very beautiful landlady, graphic designer Kathryn Reynolds. Their initial meeting is powerful, as if time stood still (which it does) while each took one another's measure. Obviously something otherworldly was going on and as they would both discover, something dark and very dangerous. As Jack's investigation led them on a rather erotic path with shared dreams, and more otherworldly events, they both came to realize that they were being manipulated by a very dark presence that was using them to thwart a serial killer madman's scheme to become an unholy power. The chase became intimately personal when Jack and Kathryn joined forces to prevent the killer from securing Kathryn as his final victim in his sacrificial ceremony.
*** Wow, talk about thrills and chills the reader will find themselves completely caught up in this second offering of York's ` Moon' trilogy. Being introduced to Jack in the first of the two novels I liked him for extending his friendship to Ross and Megan, but here in his own (stand-alone) story you will love him. Jack and Kathryn are like two puppets with the lesser of two evils pulling their strings. With each bizarre event and dream they became more tightly ensnared in things neither could control, including a very intense and very stimulating sexual attraction. It's written beautifully with originality, thrills and chills, engaging multi-dimensional characters, excitement and a superb romance. Rebecca York has definitely landed on my auto-buy list and keeper shelf! This is definitely a book I most highly recommend - two superb novels in one great book!

translated works of the famous Chilean poet.
Stephen Mitchell's translations are by far the most eloquent I have found. I feel they best convey the many moods of Pablo Neruda. The writer is able to capture the most intense feelings in the poet's writing better than any I have read. Thank you Stephen Mitchell.

These Dover book/CD ROMs are a graphic designers delight. It's so hard to find good quality graphics that are royalty free, and not end up spending a fortune. Dover has a good selection of royal free images that are presented in a book and are on CD ROM.
The images in the CD ROM is in full colour and so dazzling. 362 large images in TIFF format. Sharp images ready to use. Great for Paint Shop PRO. You don't have to scan, the images are there. You don't have to install some program. Just open them from you CR Rom Drive

marvelous resource for Victorian writersReview Date: 2005-06-04
Done is seasonal wear, it covers everything from ball gowns to a stroll in the park. There is a corresponding section that has a details analysis of the clothing, item by item. It starts out going year by year, but then jumps a bit missing some. So while this is a super reference book, you really need Blum's Victorian Fashion from Harper's Bazaar 1867-1898 as well.
High recommended.
excellent, but a bit spottyReview Date: 2005-03-26
However, the book suffers from one unfortunate flaw: several years are missing entirely, including 1872, 1873, 1876, 1879-1881, 1883-1886, 1889, and 1890. The styles changed a lot between some of these years, too. It leaves the slim, just slightly bustled 1882 styles juxtaposed with the huge, jutting bustle of 1887, and the still-full bustle and plain sleeves of 1888 jump right to the bustle-less bell skirt and high gathered mutton sleeves of 1891. On the other hand, some years are given particular focus with several pages of plates, including 1870, 1871, 1878, 1887, and 1888.
If you want to learn about Victorian fashions in depth, this book would work best as a complement to a large black-and-white compilation such as Stella Blum's "Victorian Fashions from Harper's Bazaar".

Watch out Golding!Review Date: 2000-10-24
The influence of William Golding is not lost on the authors either. Indeed, her paradise is all too easily corrupted. Stephanie emerges in the novel as a flawed heroine, whose victories depend upon her ability to arrive at universal truths. All the while, she remains engaging and entertaining to the reader.
While my love of the series leads me to award a 5 star rating to this book, my mixed feelings on the dualistic ending put it at 4 stars. The ending definitely raises more questions than it answers, leaving many a reader, myself included, feeling somewhat unsatisfied.

I especially liked the dolls themselves, clad in faithful depictions of the underwear of the era.
The selection of costumes is superb. It is clear to see the development of women's dress from 1899 until 1919, from heavily corseted hourglass figures laden with ruffles, lace and embroidery, to the fantasies of the early teens and finally the simplification of dress leading up to the 1920-s.

Guerrilla ManualReview Date: 2004-04-19
Mr. Doolin not only wrote this book, he lived it too. On his way to achieving his degree, he had to tackle many of the questions and situations found in the book. Here, Mr. Doolin compiles many obstacles students (especially returning adult students) face, and then suggests many ways to avoid or overcome these obstacles.
The chapters range from making the decision to go back to college, to financial aid, to discovering your learning style. These are not the only helpful chapters, the book is full of them. The book is also a supportive tool. Mr. Doolin includes quotes from many people throughout their educational journey. Showing that others have had the same frustrations and roadblocks and have succeeded can be comforting to the returning adult student.
Guerrilla Manual For Adult College Students by Mike Doolin is a must read for any adult returning to education. I would encourage the offices of Admissions and Counseling at any college to recommend this to their returning students. I also encourage any student to grab a copy because there is definitely something in there that is helpful to everyone. I would also like to suggest to teachers, that they obtain a copy and pay close attention to chapter thirteen, How Adults Learn. This chapter shows the learning differences between younger, and not so young returning students and the way they are taught, or should be taught.
If you are an adult returning to college, a teacher, a fellow college student, or anyone who is involved in a college community, Guerilla Manual is recommended reading. There is something for everybody. And everybody needs a little help once in a while.

Excellent handbook for the adult learnerReview Date: 2003-12-17
I contacted Author Doolin and found out a few things--for example, he comes at this subject from a somewhat different perspective than the researchers and academics: he actually was an adult student, and spent 15 years of night school pursuing his Bachelor's degree and several more getting his Master's. On top of that, he is now an adjunct Assistant Professor in the English Department of one of the country's premier community colleges (Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY), mostly teaching evening writing courses full of returning adult students. If those aren't enough credentials, Doolin also devotes hundreds of hours per year advising students at MCC, and most of those are returning adults as well. Doolin's `been there, done that' in the adult student world, and the things he says in this book show that in-the-trenches experience.
The title of this book is no coincidence. This is a hands-on guide full of real-world experiences. In addition to Doolin's own years of struggle to get his degree, he interviewed dozens of adult students in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s to get their take on the strategies that work and the ones that don't. The book includes nearly 200 little stories in the form of quotes from adult students, detailing their thoughts and approaches on a wide variety of subjects. These short quotes are sprinkled throughout the book's 346 pages and 31 chapters.
This book is as comprehensive a treatment of going back to school as an adult as you are likely to find anywhere, and covers every major topic, including fear of returning to school, studying, test taking, babysitting woes, time management, finding the money to go to school, personal learning styles, methods of earning credit outside the classroom and dozens of other critical subjects. In addition to answering common questions and addressing typical concerns, Doolin has added a number of eye-opening statistics as well. Do you know how much more you are likely to make over a lifetime of work with a Bachelor's degree vs a high school education? It's about $1,000,000 - and a Master's is worth nearly twice that. Do you know how many adults are currently going to college? About 7.5 million. The book also includes hundreds of internet links to additional information on everything from learning styles to financial aid. If you need more information on a topic, Doolin has provided a quick way for you to get it.
Doolin has been an advertising copywriter for many years, has had some fiction published, and has ghost-written hundreds of magazine articles for his ad agency clients. Those years of writing for public consumption definitely show. His writing style is quick, conversational and very easy to read.
Guerrilla Manual for Adult College Students is about as good a book on this subject as you could want. It's packed with information that is usable in the real world, is thorough, well organized and easy to read. Any adult thinking of going back to school should definitely read it.

A HAND FULL OF STARSReview Date: 2005-08-27
Full of wisdom, humor and realism, I recommend this book for high school students; I believe that many middle school students will feel that in the first half of the book "nothing happens" and the references to a romantic relationship may make some parents nervous.
Nevertheless, to see a writer grow subtly over time is a pleasure. A HAND FULL OF STARS is relevant to students of literature in any country.

The first book is one of my favorites and introduces Ross Marshall, a werewolf and a detective. The second book focuses on his friend, Jack, a cop. No werewolves, but a wonderful love story nonetheless.
The Moon series is a wonderful set of books that begins with these two.
