The book and DVD is exactly what it portends to be. If you are fascinated, as I am, about Victorian and turn of the century halloween art that tended towards the scary and creepy rather than todays hideous and vicious. The victorians and Edwardians were also good at depicting cute kids and animals in silly spooky situations. I like the innocent halloween fun of the past. If that is what you are looking for, this collection is for you. Highly recommended.

Poetry for Insane and I Feel Bad About My Neck a good duo

I still laugh out loud whenever I think of The Favour or The Fart or any of the other hilarious poems in Poetry For The Insane: The Full Mental by Michael B. Davie. This unique book with its offbeat sense of humour is truly one of a kind and well worth a read even if some of these funny poems aren't your cup of tea.

Another book I'd recommend is I feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron and I'd love to see both books paired at a good rate by amazon so my friends will have no more excuses for not buying them both. I really enjoyed I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman for its insightful and humorous approach. I recently read both these terrific books in tandem and agree they make a great pair. I have no hesitation in recommending both great books.

A lot of the poems in this book are a bit too weird for my tastes, but I'm giving it five stars anyway. Why, you ask? It's because I literally peed my pants laughing over the poems I found very funny. Buy this book for the poems Small Favours and The Fart as these poems alone are worth the price of the book and anything after that that tickles your funny bone is just demented gravy.

Poetry for the Insane: The Full Mental is like nothing I've ever read before. It's a unique experience. As soon as I saw the cover of this book showing a cracked egg with a bum crack, I knew this was going to be one weird and wonderful book, and I was right. Some of the funnier poems had me in tears as I was laughing so hard. Other poems made me think or look at life in a different way. It's a great book.

Poetry for the Insane: The Full Mental makes fun of mental illness, it's politically incorrect and it's really disturbing when you read it and repeatedly laugh out loud, as I did, in spite of my best efforts to keep a straight face. It's rare that any book of humor makes me do much more than smile, but this one had me laughing so hard it hurt. This is really bent, twisted, off-beat poetry with some really crazy and funny ways of looking at things. I didn't want to like this book, but I love it. Check it out - it's like nothing else you'll ever read.

Poetry for the Insane: The Full Mental is truly one of a kind. I especially enjoyed the wickedly funny poems Dirty Cleaning Woman, Small Favours, The Fart and King for a Day.
A very odd but very funny book. More people should discover this book of twisted humor. Some reviewers have suggested amazon should pair Poetry For The Insane: The Full Mental with Nora Ephron's I Feel Bad About My Neck. I think that's a wonderful idea. Both books deserve all the attention they can get.

This is a wonderful piece that is beautifully transcribed and professionally printed/presented. The pianist must have advanced technique and good reach to perform this piece. In addition, the rapidly repeated notes within crossed-handed playing positions make for a true challenge.

Once you have this one mastered, you'll be asked to perform it every time your "fans" visit. It's a spectacular performance piece that lets the pianist traverse the entire keyboard and produce magical sounds with wide ranging expressiveness.

Gershwin was a genius.

This two-piano version has been corrected and updated to reflect the original Gershwin "chamber" version, which is now commonly available for full orchestra. If you are listening to recordings, it is the version used by James Levine in his recording with the Chicago Symphony, as opposed to the old classic Bernstein/NY Phil. A great buy for the price, very accurate and easy to read, with a helpful analysis of the work at the beginning.

Overall excellent. Deviates in some areas from traditional orchestral renditions -- leaves out a few minor portions and adds in others. Some sections very difficult (e.g. apparently carry-overs from 4-hand/2 piano version). But a great work nonetheless.

Simply said, I am using this as the feature of my senior piano performace recital at my college. This brilliant work is something to behold in its concerto form, something to enjoy it its orchestral form, and something that every one should study in its piano solo form.

Gershwin himself wrote this arrangement, so it can be safe to assume that everything in this piece is exactly how Gerswhin wanted it. I would imagine he would best realize what he original thought to be the important parts...

This book is such a comfort. As a child therapist for several years and now a mother of three, I embrace the premise of this book: that bad news and scary information is available everywhere and that our children are profoundly affected by it. That's why is is so refreshing to read Scary News. It is really rare to find an author who writes with such clarity and joy and who offers such easy and practical things to do with children to counteract these forces. For example, I really liked the suggestions on creating comforting and beautiful places in your home with your children. Throughout the book Lorna Knox addresses the spiritual side of children in a joyful and non-denominational way, which adds a depth and wisdom that most parenting books don't come close to. The goal is to prepare children to deal with reality in a mature, joyful and compassionate way. And, without addressing any specific behavior problems, it is clear to me that the suggestions in this book would alleviate many of the behavior problems parents face. I highly recommend it.

Scary News couldn't come at a better time, for parents, grandparents, and children. Many parents and grandparents are sensitive to what can be viewed on TV news. However, how many of us pay attention to what's on the radio or what we're talking about when we're with the kids or they're within earshot. I had never thought about such things until I read Scary News. Also, Lorna gives us positive ideas on what to do when the kids hear about all the world's problems. It's not just a negative book; her ideas are wonderful -- and they work!

As a Child Development Specialist, parents and teachers often ask me how much their children and students should be told about certain tragedies headling the news. It's a complicated question, but Lorna's book is full of fresh, practical ideas to help guide us. During the Tsunami event, a Kindergarten teacher at my school struggled with how much information to discuss with her class of 5-years olds. I gave her my copy of Scary News, and after reading it she declared it to be "wonderful", and asked that our school purchase more copies for our staff and parents. Scary News is a resource book that should be in every parent's library.

Scary News: 12 Ways To Raise Joyful Children When The Headlines Are Full Of Fear by Lorna Ann Knox (a former nurse and health educator, and currently a teacher in Portland, Oregon) is a resource for raising children in a modern age full of terrors. Offering guidelines for teaching children of various ages and stages of development, from early childhood to teens, how to lead balanced lives without being overwhelmed by news of horrible events such as war, natural disasters, terrorist attacks and economic busts. Scary News is not an escapist guide; it stresses the importance of learning information, but balances that with the key of learning to make life choices out of love, not fear. A reassuring and knowledgeable supplement for answering some of the most difficult questions a child can ask.

Whether for a valuable collection at home, or a sight while swimming or scuba diving, this will prove very reliable in the field. A MUCH more advanced field guide than the Golden First Guides, this lists over 600 shells in all and will quickly identify any strange seashell you happen to find beachcombing. This guide contains: Augor shells, chitons, whelks, limpets, and many other valuable collectibles. Each shell species entry has a description added to the side, explaining: abundance, range, and habitat. After the first Golden Guide to Seashells intrigues you, try your luck out with this field reference.
There are several editions made of this guide, from cheap paperback to hardcore turtleback. The paperback and hardback are the best to buy, as they are both great deals and cost less than the turtleback, which is also durable. Any edition will serve you very well in shell collection ID or snorkeling discoveries.

This is the book that got me started.

But this is the book that got me and all too many others hooked into this area. 30 years later I still love the hobby. Give it to a child and watch him/her grow.

If you like to collect seashells, then this handy key to the typical shells found on a beach may be of interest. It comes in a handy soft cover and is pocket sized, so it will easily fit in one's bathing suit's waist. It is slender, although several of the easy to find shells are listed, photos are reasonable and of good quality. It is similar to other such books, although not quite a book and not quite a pamphlet. It's in a league of its own!

It is great to listen to a good dramatized story and imagine what is happening, the way our grandparents used to do when there was no television around! A good exercise for our minds!

Five of the six adaptations were great. The only one that could have been way better was "The Black Island", which is, by far, my favorite Tintin book. To me, that adaptation was disappointing: the story was cut too short, and Richard Pearce -the actor playing Tintin's voice- should have been more convincing. Still, one can see that "The Black Island" audio adaptation was the first one of the series. The next five stories are wonderful and all the voice talents are convincing!

Great buy,... I love it

This was my first Tintin tape. It includes:

"The Black Island" - Tintin tries to solve the mystery of a crashed plane.

"The Secret of the UNICORN" - An old model sailing ship that Snowy breaks will lead Tintin and Snowy to adventure.

"Red Rackham's Treasure" - Tintin, Snowy and Capt. Haddock are now searching for the wreck of the UNICORN. Introduces Professor Calculus.

"Destination Moon" - Tintin goes to the Moon. Need any more info?

"Explorers on the Moon" - The real Moon adventure.

"Tintin in Tibet" - Tintin goes searching for Chang Chong-chen, the young Chinese boy he met in "The Blue Lotus."

Good.

BBC Recordings Add New Dimension To Tintin

Stories include: Black Island, Secret of Unicorn, Red Rackham's Treasure, Destination Moon, Explorers on Moon, Tintin in Tibet. The BBC has pulled out all the stops to provide top actors having fun with the Tintin stories, plus great sound effects and appropriately exciting or scary background music. The voices are quite different from the video taped stories, and so offer a completely new interpretation. And whereas the video tapes focus on visual presentation and pretty much treat the audio as a given (fair enough), these audio tapes fully exploit the possibilities of sound. Tintin is played absolutely straight, but the other characters are somewhat camped up, to provide entertaining parodies of themselves (for instance, the East European baddies have accents worthy of a Bond movie). Be aware that the accents are all very British or are British versions of foreign accents; but very clear recordings would make them easy to follow for most non-British English speaking listeners, I'd say. The stories follow the books more or less; the title 'unabridged' may mislead, as to compress the stories to a half hour each, much has been chopped out - consequently the stories rattle along at a fast clip. What have been added are touches of humour absent from the originals, such as an evil doctor describing Tintin as having signs of mental disorder which include 'infantilism, delusions of grandeur, a dog lover, and plus fours'. I bought these tapes for my 6 year old daughter, but we both enjoy them equally though in different ways: she for the plot and the escapism of the stories, me for the subtleties of the interpretation and the humour. These tapes are a steal at this price. Next stop: volume 2 for me.

Listening to Mahler's 3rd symphony is an inexorable experience. Reading the score while listening is ecstatic. It adds a lot to the enjoyment of the music if you have a copy of the score in hand. You can relate another sensory organ to the music, elevating the experience to greater heights.

Before I had the score, all I knew was there were several French horns playing the opening call in the 3rd (M3) but I know now that there are exactly 8 horns playing in unison. Like Aaron Copland said in his book 'What to Listen for in Music', "If there exists a more noble sound than eight horns singing a melody fortissimo in unison, I have never heard it". I think he's referring to M3's opening horn call. Magnificent! And now with the score in hand, I know exactly how the music was put on the score by Mahler, it's notation, expressive remarks, etc.

In some books that I read or even in the liner books that comes with the CDs, there is often reference to the measures in the music. Without the score, you will never know which measure that they are talking about. If you're really a Mahler fan, or for that matter, if you are really into a certain piece of music, buy the score. Believe me, it will add to your enjoyment.

However, some of you may think that it's a waste of time since you do not know how to read music. Yes, knowing how to read music will help a lot buy hey! reading music is not difficult to learn. All you need is to have the passion for music inside you and the passion to explore the music. If you have this, there's nothing that can be in your way.

The Dover series of scores are mostly reliable. Commercially, they are the best there is.

Top Class publication

Review Date: 2006-08-19
When it comes to musical scores, let's face it, there's not much of a difference between one and another. All the notes must be printed or you're not getting what can properly be called a musical score. But when it comes to Orchestral scores, there is a difference. Here we have each and every instrument's part printed (at least when they can be heard playing) so as we can follow the intricacies of, say, the clarinet part.
Mahler is a totally different case altogether - a composer in a class of his own. Many orchestral scores of Mahler's symphonies give the very least notation possible. This score of Symphonies 3 & 4 in the Dover Orchestral Scores series however, is a top class publication. Why?
Well, Mahler is in a class of his own because when it came to giving directions to his orchestra he did not stop at the Classical Italian markings for Tempo and expression, although strictly speaking this is all that is necessary for a composer to communicate his wishes to the players. Mahler went much further and gave quite specific instructions in German to both the orchestral players and the conductor. For example, directions to the Horn players to hold the bell of the instrument up in the air, explain to the listener why the horns sound different in these passages; advice given to Timpanists as to what kind of sticks to use at certain times explain the different effects we hear. Then there are instructions to solo players, for example, not to pay too much attention to the rest of the orchestra, but to play their part in a slightly slower manner thus exaggerating the importance of their solo. Dover Orchestral Scores do us the great service of actually printing all these instructions, just as in the original score i.e. in German. But their thoughtfulness reaches right on to printing a Glossary of the terms used as well as the texts written or used by Mahler in the symphonies.
This makes using Dover's scores a real pleasure and we really can hear if the recording we are listening to actually plays the music the way Mahler would have wanted. I can think of no better way of rating our recordings ourselves and not just taking the conductor's or the Studio's word for it.

Excellent price and value... but wanted to clarify...

Someone mentioned how invaluable it is to own the score because you can refer to it when you read an article, or review, or liner notes that make references to a measure number.

Well, this book is useful only if you number the measures yourself with a pencil (which would take a very long time), since the book actually does NOT supply measure numbers. It supplies a number of figures... (for instance, if i remember correctly, Symphony No. 3's 1st movement has 76 figures). But each figure can be any number of measures, so when you read an article that makes reference to measure 435, you simply won't be able to find it, without actually numbering the measures yourself.

Otherwise, it is a very good book. Dover has managed to bring complete scores of great works to the average budget-conscious consumer, and this is truly an excellent book that covers two amazing symphonies. You are bound to learn a lot about orchestration just from studying these. I am particularly fond of studying the brass sections in the first movement of the 3rd Symphony... Truly phenomenal composition!

Wonderful Mahler 3 and 4

This is a must for those wishing to study and understand Mahler's Immense third symphony. The print is very large and readable. Though I wish there were more translations for the German text, there is enough in the parts themselves to take a guess. Mahler's 4th is a charming piece. I love it for it's sincerity and modesty. Being the shortest and "simplestic" orchestration, it makes a great introductory Mahler symphony.

The score is very durable and is large and easy to read. The price is wonderful -- for the starving music student, particularly!

I highly reccommend this score to professionals and those adventurous listers out there.

This book is the first I have read in this series. I loved the story and the characters. The only part that kept me from giving this book a 5 is the end. The end was short and abrupt, there was no epilogue it just ended. Kapuut.

A very wonderful story!

I think this is the best book Lisa Tawn Bergren has written. I`ve read almost all of her other novels and this is by far the best(in my opinion).

I loved this book! Lisa Twan Bergren mixes Romance and adventure in a powerful way! The story is about a woman who finds love in an unexpected place and has to chose between the love she knows and the love knocking on her door. If you've never read anything by Bergren I recommend Chosen, Treasure, Refuge, and its sequel Firestorm. Trust me you won't regret it!

Awesome book!

I loved this book! It gave an update on the characters from Refuge but told a new story about a woman trying to figure out who she loves. Lisa Tawn Bergen is an excellent writer and knows how to tell a good romance. It is a touching story and you won't want to put it down. If you love a romance you will love this book!

THE Definitive Book on the Acting Process

Darryl Hickman is a true visionary, and his book, "The Unconscious Actor," explains his unique approach to the acting process, going beyond Meisner and Strasberg, and tapping into the origins of creativity imagined by Stanislavsky. Darryl blends the inspirational/creative with the craft, using a Process he has developed over the years, through his own explorations, spirituality, humanity, study, and wisdom. And his life experiences make a great read. A must for every serious artist.

Darryl Hickman is a visionary. He has looked into the future. He has diligently constructed techniques for achieving a freedom of expression that is not only immediately needed, but will be essential in the coming decades: A process that directly addresses the releasing of new energy sources that can only lead to a far larger artist vocabulary for all aspects of the performing arts than is currently considered the "standard". It is a process that not only encompasses multiple realities and interpretations of the human soul, but blatantly endorses and rewards infinite mixtures of behavior and emotion....

Darryl Hickman compassionately gives his students the tools to chip away and reveal old childhood wounds, making them much better actors and people. Like the flawed marble Michelangelo started with before sculpting David, Darryl shows his students how to chisel a step-by-step egoless Process intertwining the arduous, yet rewarding task of sculpting our own inner and outer masterpiece on stage as well as off. No shortcuts for true exploration. Hickman provides the next generation of authentic actors with an entrance into a spiritual doorway starting with Stanislavsky. This book is a monumental gift to performance artists who chose to live life awake in their souls while unraveling the layers of art versus craft. Darryl used to quote Emmanuel, "Fear is only an empty room." And what a room, should we dare to turn the knob and travel through the threshold.

This book "The Unconscious Actor" has ignited a creative force in me that I had long since forgotten. Or more accurately opened a door to the creative force always within me and gave me tools to allow it to flow with greater ease. It was not only the words, but also the energy held in each page, which allowed me to reconnect and open the door to the creative force once again. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to unlock the artist within.

From child star in the glamour days of Hollywood to renowned present-day acting teacher, Darryl Hickman covers three bases (and more!) in THE UNCONSCIOUS ACTOR: OUT OF CONTROL, IN FULL COMMAND.
Skillfully weaving the history of acting, his precocious and fascinating personal journey in show business, and priceless lessons in the art of acting and living, Hickman has created a page-turner for both professionals and "civilians". He clearly knows and reveres not only his craft, but the human condition, as well. This book is a must-read for anyone eager to expand and explore their creative potential!
