Good general review of the history of freight equipment used by railroads as well as an overview of current rolling stock. This is a good introductory book for those interested in rail history.

Is it a gondola that carries coal, isn't it? I've heard them called "hoppers" too. But that's only for grain, isn't it? Answers: (1) rarely; (2) hoppers (open-top) are not gondolas, and most coal is carried in them. (3) Hoppers (covered) carry more than just grain.

This is a wonderful book of pictures that will prove interesting to the beginner and fun for the aficianado. FREIGHT TRAIN CARS covers its subject very well, in essence a "field guide" to American freight cars including those that are fairly rare (coil car) and those that are growing obsolecent (boxcars). The pictures are old enough to show some marvelous B&W detail, but new enough to show the newer shipping modes like shipping "cubes" (which are boxes but not perfectly cubical, and most world trade depends on them, stacked on ships and railcars as high as possible).

This may not have been the intention back in the early Nineties when this book was first produced, but FREIGHT TRAIN CARS is also a riot of colorful "fallen flags" (Railfan talk for rail companies that have gone out of business or merged into a "megasystem").

Highly recommended. There are other books, but for the money and IMHO, this is the one to go for, especially if you can get a good clean used copy inexpensively. Signed, Al Smalling, proud to be called "Railfan."

The book was good overall of the freight car produced but not of any that were produced for DOD, Navy or Marines.
Nice book for the person who likes to see the history of products produced over a time period.

A Nice, Simple Survey

This book is a simple one that seeks to do no more than to introduce readers to the common varieties of freight cars found on the railways and it does a commendable job of doing that. After briefly discussing the origins of freight trains themselves, we are taken on a tour of the different types of cars. The development of each is examined and then their usage through the 19th and 20th centuries in the US is given. These are not in depth treatments but they are very adequate for an introduction.

My first acquaintance with Mr. Long's work was his article "Logistics of Famine" which I found unique for its down-to-earth treatment of a topic rarely recognized as important at the time it was written, delivered in his now-familiar user-friendly style. The man knows and loves his subject, and the care he has taken with this book to clearly explain and illustrate the many aspects of global supply chain management shows that.

This book is one of the best textbooks I have ever read. All concepts are very well explained. Unlike other textbooks, "International Logistics" provides so many examples that the material becomes easy to understand. The writer's extensive world traveling is portayed in most of the chapters.I highly recommend it to anybody who is interested in the field.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank reviewers for any comments and suggestions, which have been the source of countless improvements to this book and the overall project.

The manuscript was not edited prior to publication. I don't know why, but this is Kluwer's policy. The good news is that it is the #1 book in its field, and sold out in 4 months, so the second printing afforded the chance to fix most of the typos. This is my first book, written while in a doctoral program, teaching, and researching/travelling, so your patience is appreciated.

Besides being #1 in English, it is also one of the most widely translated business books ever. It is being published in 12+ overseas editions which are translated and edited for that region. If you speak another language and are interested in logistics elsewhere, you may want to check these out. Douglas Long

Frequent typographical errors and fundamental gramatical mistakes in the first printing (due to the publisher's failure to edit the manuscript, according to the author) distracted this reader from the book's content at all times. Be sure you receive the second printing. As of February 2004, Amazon was still selling what I assume is the first printing.

'Betweeen the Fog' is a wonderful example of poetry as it should be. Easy to read and understand while at the same time touching our hearts and souls. The words draw pictures in one's mind that are crystal clear. Timothy has a wonderful ability to encourage us to see with ours hearts. A 'must have' book for anyone who loves children and poetry.

Comprehensive History, Technology. VG Photo Survey
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-05
This is a fun book, if you enjoy learning about narrow subjects in great depth. The history of coal cars is covered comprehensively, as are the technology and rationale for their evolution. In many respects, this exposition gives insight into the technical evolution of all car types. The writing is well done and accessible. The rather vast number of photos included are generally very well produced, with enough angle coverage of "types" to illustrate the message of the text very well. Although the history starts with English practice, the book very quickly focuses in on US practice, and then remains there almost exclusively.
I bought the book in hopes that it would have specific coverage of the Virginian battleship gons. The book included a photo of one of the prototypes, but not one of the production series as new or rebuilt. A photo (not one of the better ones, alas) was provided of the N&W battleship gons. A minor lapse; while not an expert, I believe that this must be one of the few.
I have enjoyed this book greatly. The production values are very high and the editing is well done. The index is very useful, covering photos as well as text, making this a quick (but very heavy) reference for modeling projects and car spotting.
The fifth star would have been a slam dunk with even a single photo of the production Vgn battleships-- and I admit I'm picking a nit.

My Freight Train is the story of a little boy who imagines he is the engineer of a modern day freight train. The story describes the various cars an engine might pull, what they are filled with, how they are connected and what a typical day is like for an engineer of such a train. My son, who is now four, has adored this book since he was two. The story ends with the boy falling asleep in the arms of his father and is a great bedtime book for a child who loves trains.

We read this at a bookstore. I thought it was o.k., but way overpriced at $16. My 4-year-old has been begging me to buy it ever since, though. It has a nice ending, and if it were closer to $7, I would buy it.

Review Date: 2008-05-05
Unlike some of the people who have written bad reviews of this book, I actually BOUGHT IT and READ IT. I found the book to be chock full of stories and anecdotes. Some of the pictures are too small for my tastes, but this book doesn't look like it was intended to be a picture book. It looks like a good resource for people who want to read firsthand accounts of what it is like to be a train writer, learn a little bit about the history and origins of the freight tag, and have plenty of pictures to go with the text.

If you want to see huge photos of incredibly intricate work that took several artists days to perfect, this is not your book. If you want to learn about the scene, read stories about the hazards and risks involved, and see a broad range of tags, from small hollow ones to huge full color end-to-ends, to hobo drawings, try this book.

How many trains would a train writer write when a train writer writes on trains? It's in the book. Some books have pictures, but they don't answer this one. This book belongs in my collection, and that's where it will stay.

Have to add this book- MUST HAVE

This book does a great job of telling the story of freight train graffiti. The authors did a great job of finding the artist that were really putting in work with amazing style. This is apparent by looking at the covers with Pre-One and Sento! These two alone say enough about this book. The stories inside are a great read and I thought the pictures were clear and detailed well. If you ever tried to paint a freight train you will really appreciate the style in this book and how the artists featured developed such technique and skill. They make it look easy! The stories and the writers perspective in this book is amazing. I especially like the chase stories! haha. I highly recommend anyone a fan of graffiti, art or trains to purchase this book. This is the 101 when it comes to graff of freights!

The subject is well researched, although rail cars are not totally unique to graffiti, which seems to be a human tradition since the first caveman scratched out the image of a beast on the wall of his cave. History buffs study graffiti along the Oregon Trail in places like Independence Rock in Wyoming. Graffiti is personification. What I find amazing is that so many "artist" have so much time, and resources to supply great quantities of paint to do this illegal form of art. Obviously several hours go into one masterpiece at some point, would expect detection by authorities. I have a little difficulty with the smallness of the writing. Otherwise, I find it interesting
