Forty Feet Below: The Story of Chicago's Freight Tunnels
Published in Paperback by Interurban Pr (August, 1982)
Author: Bruce Moffat

Used price: $49.00

An interesting study of hidden Chicago
Many Chicagoans recall the Flood of '92; a piling near the Kinzie St. bridge was driven through the roof of an old freight tunnel, flooding the basements and sub-basements of many of the buildings in the Loop. This book tells the story of how those tunnels came to be.

The text of the book itself is a surprisingly good read, if a little dry in places. Included in the copy that I obtained are a couple of maps of the tunnels as of 1932, which give some idea of how extensive this network was. If nothing else, this book outlines a great lesson for us all: if you build it, they won't necessarily come (the vision behind building the tunnels lacked one vital thing: customers).

Pictorial Reference Material
A pictorial survey of New Haven equipment, just as its title suggests. Color reproduction is good and the caption material is helpful. The book is a good reference for historians and modelers looking for photographs of NH equipment and its surroundings.

This guide is an enormous help to NYC fans and modelers
This guide is something that every hardcore NYC and Penn Central fan should have in their library. It offers one stop for photos of NYC rolling stock mainly taken from 1955-1970. That said there are some deficiencies. The author chose not to show any kind of progression of equipment, rather the shots are grouped randomly by type. The author inclulde many photos of some cars (i.e. 9 photos of 60' baggage cars) and ignore others (no diners, 1 RPO shot). There is a large emphisis on oddball equipment like jet powered snowblowers where more typical equipment should be illustrated. My complaints are minor however considering the volume of excellent clear shots that has helped my modeling efforts of the Central. Kudos.

The Petroleum Shipping Industry: A Nontechnical Overview

Great introduction to the Petroleum Shipping industry
Being new to this part of the petroleum value chain, I found this book very useful, interesting and quite easy to read.
It introduces the most important concepts and facts about the petroleum shipping industry progressively, clearly and with plenty of examples. By reading this book you'll gain a very good understanding of the types of vessels, what they are most appropriate for, the economics, the trading patterns of crude, products, LPG and LNG, Oil spill liabilities and the history of the petroleum shipping industry.
The only thing that prevents me to give it a five stars ranks: Some of the graphics illustrating the concepts are not easy to read (why 3D?) Some of the clear descriptions of the vessels hardware would be much clear if illustrated with pictures or drawings. Anyway, a great book

Anything, Anytime, Anywhere: The Legacy of the Flying Tiger Line, 1945-89

Facts, figures, photos - but there ain't no soul!
As an employee of the Flying Tiger Line, Art Chin was well placed to document the history of the great all-cargo US flag-carrier. Chin's thesis-like work reads like a financial analyst's dream, and reflects a talent for painstaking research into the growth and triumph of the Tigers, right up to 1989 when the airline was subsumed within Federal Express.

Unfortunately, Chin's undoubted research skills are countered by appalling editing throughout, and occasional poor expression. These shortcomings spoil what could have been a scholarly account of a great airline.

While not exclusively focused on airline economics, Chin's study nevertheless fails to grasp opportunities to explore in greater detail some of the operational feats and personalities underpinning the Flying Tiger Line's success story.

Liberally illustrated, and reflecting the author's strong sense of loyalty to the FTL, 'Anything Anytime Anywhere' never reaches its potential. As a dissertation, it ranks a Pass at best.

A revised, carefully edited manuscript, updated to include the Flying Tiger legacy manifest in the fast-growing Polar Air Cargo, would allow Art Chin to redeem his book's present shortcomings.

This book is awesome
I love this book my dad has all the flying tiger line books. MY dad was a former employee of flying tigers for 12 yrs. now he works for fedex but he still loves all the work he has done for the flying tiger line. He went all over the place doing weight and balance for them. he still wishes that they were around.

The Little Website That Could; or, How To Turn Your Little Caboose Into A Cash-Hauling Freight Train

An Internet Freight Train
The Internet is becoming a booming retail business. Anyone can have a website selling items from apricots to customized ziplock bags. To the untrained eye, it's quite seamless to log on and click the check-out icons. For the most part, many sites do not change their main design often. This might give the impression of a maintenance free operation. Okay, so you want to start your own site. Don't let these appearances fool you. Do your homework first, and gain knowledge from those who learned the hard way.

"The Little Website That Could" hauls all of the information you need to know about steering a virtual freight train, from the engine to the caboose. It begins to chug along with getting your business started as a corporation. The chapters of lessons learned along the way, tips about marketing with ezines, and suggestions for looking like a big corporation are the first few cars of the train. Information about search engines, ebooks, and affiliate programs fuel the other chapters and the dogs running by can't catch up with you. ...With a little determination, you too can have extraordinary success with your website.

Lynne Schlumpf describes her entire website experience in this book. She loves trains, and the moral of the story "The Little That Could" has always stuck with her. This book is a result of the success and failures from 8 years of researching internet marketing and operating her website Route 66 Cyber Café. I would recommend "The Little Website That Could" to all entrepreneurs who want to drive a successful internet freight train.

Average train book
We read this at a bookstore. I thought it was o.k., but way overpriced at $16. My 4-year-old has been begging me to buy it ever since, though. It has a nice ending, and if it were closer to $7, I would buy it.
