This book offers a unique perspective compared to typical railroad picture books. While the photographs, mostly by the author, are excellent, the captions provide detailed information about what is being transported. These details extend to train numbers, number of loads vs. empties, tonnage, and locomotive numbers. The book offers the reader an appreciation of what is being transported where and how Conrail organized the movements.

CSX and predessesor lines are well covered in this book - and all pictures are in color. It is a feast for the rail historian and railfan! In 70 pages, and more than 115 pictures, author Al Hepler covers a large number of roadnames and paint schemes: from B&O and CSX and Chessie System to L&N, Monon and RF&P to Seaboard and Western Maryland and more!

Photo coverage is roughly evenly divided between locomotives and freight cars, with maybe an edge given to the diesels. All photos are sharp and clear. All are printed on nice glossy paper. All have captions. Many of the freight cars have details such as build dates and dimensions. Photos were shot in the 1980s and early 90s.

For a modeler or historian, this is an exhaustive reference. Some color, mostly B&W photos. The printing is first-rate; helpful text and information. A "must-have".

This book gives a whole different perspective in the inter workings of a brain riddled with schizophrenia. Try this on for a different perspective from someone who knows.

My three year old LOVES this book. The book is great because of the pictures and easy, rhyming text. He enjoys "reading" along. If you have a young one who loves trains, this book is a must!

This out of print book is a facinating story of the settlement of the Colorado Rockies. It details the freight wagons role in carrying supplies to mining camps from the rail head. The book is full of personal interest stories that both inform and facinate.

Over the past couple years, many people have gone out of their way to comment to me that Inside A Freight Train is one of their children's favorite books. The children get very excited when they see real cars that look like the ones in their book. The best review I've ever had, however, was from my two youngest children. Each of them discovered the book on their own (at about the age of two) while going through the books on their shelf. I'll never forget the look on my son's face as he proudly brought the book to me, wanting me to read it to him. Of course, he had no idea that I had written and illustrated it. Ever since that day, the train book has been his number one favorite book and he still has no idea that his mother had anything to do with it. (The only problem is that he finds brand new copies sometimes (waiting to be mailed out to someone) and thinks that these are his books,too!) The artwork is very straighforward because I have found that that is what young children prefer. All of the backgrounds are real places. Some of these places are here in central Pennsylvania. I actually climbed down into a tank car at a train junk yard to get pictures of the heating pipes. The lack of variety in composition (cars are all seen from the side) was due to the preference of the editor.

This book takes you on a journey of the world and the way he sees it through the mind of an obviously brilliant and deep individual. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an open mind and a desire to see things in a different light.
