Looking up down east? You've got to be kidding. Eastern North Carolina is an economic basket case.

Let me make this short and sweet, discussing Felix Harvey is not one of my favorite pastimes. A little history, L. Harvey and Son has been in business since just after the war, The Civil War. They did OK selling seed and feed to farmers in this tobacco-dominated area; however, their real money was made during the depression. You know how it works, farmer needs what he needs so he puts up the farm, can't pay bill -Harvey takes farm. Sweet, if you're L. Harvey and Son (or as the natives like to call them: L. Harvey and Son-of-a-Bitch!).

To give you some context, some of our wealthiest citizens in North Carolina live in those little tobacco towns, as well as most of our very poorest. Men like Felix Harvey as best described as feudal lords. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING of any significance happens in those communities without at least their tacit approval.

Now to the subject at hand, the Global Transpark or "air-cargo complex". This was the brainchild of this tiny ag-aristocracy to help them through the transition from tobacco to what ever is next. All agree the Transpark has been a boondoggle of monumental proportions. State and federal monies have poured in for years. Job creation, ostensibly the purpose of this project, has been virtually nil. Of course, in my opinion job creation was of secondary importance to the folks pushing this project. I think their attitude was that if jobs are created then great, we'll make money. If jobs aren't created we'll still make money, after all, millions in grant dollars are floating around for the taking.

So "Down East" is looking up is it? Maybe, the only problem is when people in Eastern North Carolina look up they see men like Felix Harvey.
