YUCK!Review Date: 2003-03-14
All the other reviews are excellent, but I cannot recommend this one. Where he tried to be funny about his wife and things they went through, I thought instead he was being utterly RUDE toward and about his wife. He even criticizes his wife when he asked her to look over and critique his manuscript and she left her opinion for him. Why ask her opinion if he is just going to throw her suggestions back into her face?
I do not recommend this book to anyone and that is a rare thing for me to do.
The worst book ever. I wish I could give it zero stars!Review Date: 2003-02-23

Broad but not deepReview Date: 2000-07-22
I can't figure out who this book is for. If it's for someone with an immigration attorney wanting an overview of the process, then I don't get why it has so many photocopied forms. If it's for do-it-yourselfers, the shallow treatment will at best give you a false sense of security that you know what's going on. If it's for an immigration professional, then the coverage of all cases might be nice, but again the shallowness will make it nearly useless. I do know that if you're taking an employment-based route to immigration, this book will be of little help.
I bought this book because of a great experience with another Nolo press book. This one has been almost useless to me.

As for what I was really interested in, which was the green card application process for work-related reasons, there is a small, incomplete paragraph and a suggestion that I find an attorney!!!!
Waste of money, useless -- if you want to get a green card, either find another book, check the INS website, or hire a lawyer, this book will not help at all.
Shows your options and helps to make decisionsReview Date: 2002-09-06
First of all, it explains how visitors from abroad can legally prolong their stay in the USA. It's possible to apply for an extension of one's visitor's status without leaving the USA. And this book guides well through this procedure.
Secondly, those who are interested in applying for a green card, should find the most suitable category if they want to succeed. The book describes qualifications and outlines the application process for each of them.
Many people don't know that they may be inadmissible for one or another reason even if they otherwise meet all the green card applicant requirements. Someone already in the US, and still may not be allowed to proceed if he or she falls into one of the inadmissible categories - as a violator of immigration rules in the past or for health reasons, for example. Some people find this out only after passing a medical exam. But you may want to learn about the regulations in advance. The book covers this issue in detail, including who and how can apply for a waiver of inadmissibility.
Another sensitive chapter is on cancellation of deportation. How and in what cases this may be done...
Also, you'll find some important information on how and who is eligible to claim status as a refugee or political asylee.
In all, I think the book is pretty informative and filled with practical advice. It's also easy to read and understand.

As for the theory--whew! It's awful. Jones attempts to provide a Freudian reading, which would be fine if he'd bothered to understand Freud first. But he didn't. In the Works Cited, he lists only a couple works by Freud, and I believe that's because that's all he read.
Jones shows no understanding of Freud. He seems to argue that Kerouac read about Freud's theory of the Oedipus complex and then consciously tried to organize his novels around that theory. Of course that's ridiculous, but Jones seems to have no clue that the complex operates unconsciously. It's absurd to argue that Kerouac chose to apply it.
It's transparent that Jones doesn't believe the very Freudian theories he (superficially) presents. Generally, he avoids referring to psychoanalysis at all, focusing instead on plot summary and occasionally popping in to point out hostility to a father figure, etc. The theory is NEVER discussed in depth, just referred to in an offhand fashion.
Jones often claims that Kerouac's novels were modelled on the works of other writers, but he offers no support for these claims. He seems to believe that pointing out parallels constitutes evidence.
This writer is in over his depth.

No Nonsense Reality CheckReview Date: 2008-11-23
Lies told by corporations have included everything from "toxic waste and poison is good for you" to "we really do have your best interest at heart when we cut your wages and benifits. After all, its important for ceo's to make 500 times the average salary...even though the company is going in the tank."
I highly recommend that everyone read this book and realize that it is a no nonsense non partisan look at the cold reality of corporations.

An excellent book for transformer designReview Date: 2005-09-13
If the transformer's principles have been explained in more words in Blume "Transformer Engineering", in more simple physical equations in Karsai "Large Power Transformers", they are explained in a systematic physical and mathematic methods in this book. In such way, faults currents, mechanical streses, load losses and high voltage insulation are formularized.

That said, one idea that was worth the cost of the book for me was: if you never want to write a book, set out to write the most special book in history.
You might want to buy this book just so you can try to figure out why the heck the Stones put all those poor quality, meaningless photos in there! Am I missing something?
Two stars instead of one because of excellent work in the past.
