Well, this isn't Shep's best, but it's still a hell of a good read. Not really a work of fiction, it's largely a collection of essays and musings on American culture. The stories are always funny and smart, and it's illustrated with Shepherd's own excellent pen and ink line drawings. Shep fans will love it and non-shep fans... Well, there aren't any non-Shep fans, only those who haven't read him yet.

"In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash" and "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories: And Other Disasters" are two books where humorist Jean Shepherd shows his mastery of the nostalgic anecdote laced with satire. A third book, "A Fistful of Fig Newtons", is also anecdotal, but with a more cynical, adult twist. Except for an occasional trip or two down Memory Lane, "The Ferrari in the Bedroom" presents a series of droll observations Shepherd makes of contemporary America ("contemporary" meaning the early 1970s). In a style of sociological humor only his, Shepherd takes on basic components of the American psyche: cars, road travel, consumerism, the battle of the sexes, television, just to name a few. The author also shoots some salvoes at 1970s precursors to 1990s political correctness. Much of the material in this book, albeit dated, will still make some readers reminisce on younger days; references are made to Playboy bunnies, real service stations (i.e., before self-serve), hippies, and the Generation Gap. Shepherd also treats us to amusing travelogues about Maine and Alaska, plus a "critique" of the Johnson Smith novelty catalog which also appears in "A Fistful of Fig Newtons", but under another title. After reading Shepherd's four books, "In God We Trust" and "Wanda Hickey's" stand out as my favorites (coincidentally, these two are still in print).

I wouldnt recommend this book to anybody with even the slightest bit of an open mind. This book is definitely not for you. However, if your an ultra-conservitive, narrow-minded, hypocritical, arrogant jackass, then its right up your alley! As for Lewis Grizzard, he should stick to writing letters to the editor of small town insignificant newspapers. Im sure more people will see those than will ever read this book!

The man who said this was whine'n outloud, never understood Gizzard and never will. This book is one of his best works. The style in which he roles off his stories, each with their own twisted view is unique only to Gizzard. I highly recommend this book.

This is my favorite. Grizzard is closer to my parents generation than mine, but I can relate to this book. I especially love his commentary on country music. I'm sad to see that this book is out of print, but I would highly recommend it to everyone. Another Grizzard book that every fan should read is "My Papa Was a Pistol and I'm a Son of a Gun." It is a very touching story of Grizzard's father written with great love and understanding. It would probably suprise some people that Grizzard can write with such feeling.

A Southerner Grows up

Review Date: 2004-05-07
For some reason this book's subtitle isn't included here at Amazon: "Elvis is Dead, and I don't Feel So Good Myself". Like many southerners of his generation, Lewis Grizzard grew up as a democrat, surrounded by democrats. Why? Well because Abraham Lincoln had been a Republican, of course, and there are still Southerners who are sore about the Civil War, but they're generally the kind of people who are sore about most things. Grizzard's fellow southerners were mostly bible-thumping conservatives and this book examines changes that began to occur in Grizzard's thinking - such as the realization that his political ideology was REALLY more in concert with the Republicans. Similarly, he had grown up in the 50s and 60s thinking that he was a rock and roll rebel and relishing the rhythms of Elvis and Carl Perkins - but as he grew up he recognized that his musical tastes were now more along the lines of Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard than what was passing for "rock and roll" 15 years ago.

Lewis doesn't apologize for his views - and in America he shouldn't have to - and if his opinions offend you I'm sorry someone held a gun to your head and made you read his book! But if you can get over any eagerness to be offended I think you'll find Lewis Grizzard an observant and funny chronicler of the human condition.

PCP is a sad ripoff of James Finn Garner's mostly brilliant series of politically-correct bedtime stories -- even down to the cover art. Author Walker offers very straight retellings of the classic Gospel parables -- The Prodigal Son, The Good Samaritan, The Wise and Foolish Maidens -- in a witless imitation of Garner's wicked style. Departures from the gospels are mostly pedantic and uninspired. The Good Samaritan offers to have his HMO cover the costs of the injured man. (!) Sinners are repetitiously "compassion-challenged" or "differently-moral." Occassionally, a bit of cleverness peeks through the murk, as when the "matriarch" in the story of the ungrateful steward writes off a debt due to liberal guilt rather than compassion. But these moments of wit are rare, especially by comparison with the steady, low-level drumbeat of liberal bashing. The book can be read through in about an hour, so it doesn't even gain in quantity what it lacks in quality.

Skip this one -- with my blessing.

I wasn't sure about this book when I first picked it up. Was it going to be blasphemous about our Lord's life and works? I found the book to be a funny look at how silly, and stupid being "politically correct" is. It is somewhat irrevent about sacred things of God, but I think unless you are a extreme Christian Fundamentalist you will find the book well within the boundaries of not taking sacred things too lightly.

Instructions are clear and well written. Some of the patterns are difficult to read the shadow words because of the letters being hidden behind the flowers.

I disagree with Alex's instructions to embroider the flowers first then trace the letters and embroider them. This requires going over the design twice.

Projects are great and general instructions very good for completing them. The patterns may be adapted to any of the projects in the book.

A basic knowledge of embroidery is helpful.

What could be more American than Redwork? How about Redwork with inspiration? Alex Anderson has spun a new twist to an all-time favorite needle art, by producing a clever and creative book on this uniquely American craft entitled, "Shadow Redwork". By including a subtle message of inspiration or love in the background using ecru embroidery, Alex has devised an interesting look, which causes the viewer to ponder more deeply our handiwork. For those of us who labor to produce personalized heirlooms for special folks, a few extra oohs and ahs goes a long way! Ms. Anderson's directions are simple to follow, with some handy tips interspersed along the way. Most appreciated are her Stitch Directions including diagrams for both right and left-handed needle crafters. She includes some simple enough designs for those new to Redwork, including her "Nasturtiums Pillow" as well as the "Seasons Banner", along with some more challenging projects for the seasoned Redwork enthusiast. A tip from one of those seasoned Redwork enthusiasts - when tracing the Redwork part of the pattern, try using a red, .05 Micron permanent pen. If your stitches are slightly off the tracing line, you will never notice! Keep up the great work, Alex; we look forward to your next imaginative quilting venture!

The Profit and the Loss

This book is great for those who are contra Eliot and as well as his fans. Part of the author's thesis is that Eliot was actually able to employ his anti-Semitism towards the construction and development of his art and that even though Eliot's attitude towards Jews was bigoted he managed to create some of the most significant verse of the early 20th century. The book is accompanied with some close readings and analyses of Eliot's most important early works including "Sweeney among the Nightingales" and "Gerontion" which provide the reader with enormous insight regardless of the author's specific ideas and theories.

Devastating critique of anti- Semitic Eliot
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-22
I studied the work of Elliot in graduate school. I knew the Anti- Semitic passages, and thus held myself distant from the cult of Elliot worship. Nonetheless reading Julius' deeper probing into Eliot's Anti-Semitism I am angry at myself for not being more outraged. It turns out that Eliot did not want Jewish readers. He scorned us.
The lines of 'Burbank with a Baedaker, Bleisten with a cigar' and other lines from 'Gerontion' would fit in well with Nazi propaganda.
Apparently Eliot was as Julius points out a 'literary anti- Semite' whose hate and scorn were for the 'free -thinking sceptical Jews' he believed the enemies of Christian civilization. On a personal level he apparently was able to bear Jewish company, here and there.
Julius shows how the Anti- Semitism is not a passing theme of youth but also pervades his later prose work.
I believe that after reading this work it is impossible to read Eliot again without feeling moral repulsion.

T.S. Eliot and the Aesthetics of Anti-Semitism
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-06
Anthony Julius has written the most objective and informative work to date on the anti-semitic aesthetics of Eliot's early poetry. Though the author is an admirer of Eliot, he is not the least bit apologetic about his attempts to come to the grips with the literary consequences of an anti-semitic aesthetic. Julius takes a cue from deconstruction when he notes that any attempts to remove or downplay anti-semitic elements in Eliot's poetry will only serve to destroy the thematic body of Eliot's vast literary corpus. Julius also takes aim at the prose works of Eliot, thereby showing that Eliot's anti-semitism was not a phase (as most critics and scholars have argued since the post WWII period); rather, it was an integral poetic topoi. Finally, the author documents T.S. Eliot's association with fellow Anti-semite Ezra Pound and the latter's role in suppressing and expunging the anti-semitic "Dirge" from the finished portion of "The Wasteland." In closing, please believe me when I tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and re-reading this book. I have yet to find anything questionable about the author's research or his methodology. To scholars and students who are interested in the life and writings of T.S. Eliot, I say to all of you: BUY AND READ THIS BOOK!

Be sure to check the notes!!!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-29
The dishonest approach used by Julius throughout this book is characterized by the quotation on page xiii that refers to a personal confrontation in South Africa between Eliot and a Mrs. Millen. The confrontation simply never happened. Julius refers to this item several times in the body of the text. He explains the fabrication in a footnote as "at best, a melodramatic and telescoped version of the truth." No, it is a lie. It refers to a meeting that never happened and the quote has not been removed or changed in the revised edition.
When one carefully checks each and every source note (and they are profuse) in analyzing the anti-semitic "quotes" attributed to Eliot by Julius it emerges that the actual sources are not Eliot but snippets from other anti-semitic tracts carefully juxtaposed by Julius to give the impression they are Eliot's. This casts a pall of mendacity of the entire enterprise. These sorts of tactics are unncessary and raise questions of integrity.
The book consists of the intricately wrought polemics of a clever barrister who seeks to give the appearance of a scholarly investigation accompanied by much hand-wringing about being "fair" to Eliot. It would take another dissertation the length of Julius's original to completely debunk many of his specious claims. Don't let the copious notes fool you. Each and every one needs to be checked.
This book, more than any other, has damaged Eliot's stature and reputation. Some young scholar should spend the time necessary to refute it.

Featuring a section of short stories and two novels/novellas, most of the fiction in this anthology has apparently seen print before. However the shorter fiction include some enlightening introductory autobiographical paragraphs from the author, and at least one of the stories is presented in an original, as yet unpublished form.

While this may not appeal to diehard Turtledove fans who might already own most of the work, if you have read some Turtledove, enjoyed it and are looking for a way to get more exposure to his work, this book is great. That's the position I'm in and am thoroughly enjoying myself.

If you haven't read these before, 3 x T is worth a look.

In hindsight, I wish that I had started with the "Anxiety for Dummies" and the "Depression for Dummies" books first. I found that in my condition of extreme anxiety and depression there was much to high school like work to be studied over. The authors probably meant it to be set up this way, on ways to deal with your mental conditions after you understand them. So I blame myself for jumping straight into the "Workbook" phase which I found to be quite tedious under my current condition.

We bought Picture Stories from the Bible along with the Comic Book Bible, and the Picture Bible. Our favorite out of the three was the Picture Bible. Feels nice, looks nice, glossy pages, etc. Also, very comprehensive representation of the Bible. We are giving it to kids aged 6-9 for Christmas, and as an adult, I also enjoy reading it. Amazon's price is a real bargain. The Comic Book Bible was okay, more for the younger set and early readers. Picture Stories from the Bible seemed out-dated and was just not as impressive to us. Also, it showed more gruesome details such as Judas hanging from a tree, and blood on Jesus, both of which were unnecessary.

This is a great edition of a great book.

This book, and its companion volume, are great additions to anyone's library. Children are drawn to comic books, and it never hurts to encourage kids to read on their own. The stories are a bit simplified, but that's actually a plus. The stories stick to the main point, and anyone interested in the stories after reading this can go to a standard bible for further information. For those who do not "support" the bible, the stories are still captivating, filled with drama, heroes and villains, adventure and challenges. Parents may want to scan the books before letting their children read them so they can see what's inside, but these stories are harmless entertainment and the children may end up better people for reading them.
